De wijze mannen uit het Oosten
2 Jezus werd geboren in Betlehem in Judea. Toen Hij geboren was, kwamen wijze mannen uit het Oosten naar Jeruzalem. In die tijd was Herodes koning.[a] 2 Ze vroegen: "Waar kunnen we de koning van de Joden vinden die kort geleden is geboren? We hebben in het Oosten zijn ster zien opgaan. We zijn gekomen om Hem te eren en Hem geschenken te brengen." 3 Dit was een grote schok voor koning Herodes en de bewoners van Jeruzalem. 4 Herodes liet de leiders van de priesters en de wetgeleerden van Jeruzalem bij zich komen. Hij wilde van hen weten waar de Messias[b] geboren zou worden. 5 Ze antwoordden: "Hij wordt in Betlehem in Judea geboren. Want de profeet Micha heeft opgeschreven: 6 'En jij, Betlehem in het land van Juda, jij bent minstens zo belangrijk als de grote steden van Juda. Want in jou zal iemand geboren worden die mijn volk Israël als een herder zal leiden.' "
7 Toen liet Herodes in het geheim de wijze mannen bij zich komen. Hij wilde heel precies van hen weten wanneer ze de ster voor het eerst hadden gezien. 8 Daarna stuurde hij hen naar Betlehem. En hij zei tegen hen: "Ga dat kind zoeken. Als jullie het hebben gevonden, moeten jullie het mij laten weten. Want dan ga ik ook naar Hem toe om Hem te eren en Hem geschenken te brengen." 9 Zo vertrokken ze.
De ster die ze in het Oosten hadden gezien, ging voor hen uit. Hij bleef staan boven de plaats waar het kind was. 10 Toen ze de ster daar zagen, waren ze erg blij. 11 Ze gingen het huis binnen en vonden daar het kind met zijn moeder Maria. Ze knielden voor Hem neer en aanbaden Hem. En ze gaven Hem dure geschenken: goud, wierook en mirre. 12 En God waarschuwde hen in een droom om niet naar Herodes terug te gaan. Daarom reisden ze langs een andere weg naar hun land terug.
Herodes laat de kinderen van Betlehem doden
13 Toen ze waren vertrokken, zag Jozef in een droom een engel van de Heer God. De engel zei: "Sta onmiddellijk op en vlucht met het kind en zijn moeder naar Egypte. Blijf daar totdat Ik je zeg dat je terug mag komen. Want Herodes zoekt naar het kind. Hij wil het doden." 14 Toen stond Jozef 's nachts op en vluchtte met het kind en Maria naar Egypte. 15 Daar bleef hij totdat Herodes was gestorven. Zo gebeurde wat de Heer God vroeger al door de profeet Hosea had gezegd: 'Ik heb mijn Zoon uit Egypte geroepen.'
16 Herodes was woedend toen hij merkte dat de wijze mannen hem hadden bedrogen. Daarom stuurde hij soldaten naar Betlehem om daar alle jongetjes van twee jaar en jonger te doden. En niet alleen in Betlehem, maar ook in de wijde omgeving daar omheen. Hij bepaalde de leeftijd van twee jaar, omdat hij van de wijze mannen wist dat het kind inmiddels hooguit twee jaar kon zijn. 17 Zo gebeurde wat de profeet Jeremia vroeger al had gezegd: 18 'Iemand huilt en jammert in Rama. Het is Rachel. Ze huilt over haar kinderen, omdat ze er niet meer zijn. Ze wil zich niet laten troosten.'
Jozef komt terug uit Egypte
19 Toen Herodes was gestorven, zag Jozef in Egypte in een droom een engel van de Heer God. 20 De engel zei: "Ga met het kind en zijn moeder terug naar Israël. Want de mensen die Hem wilden doden, zijn gestorven." 21 Jozef reisde met het kind en Maria terug naar Israël. 22 Maar hij durfde niet in Judea te gaan wonen. Want Herodes' zoon Archelaüs was de nieuwe koning van Judea geworden. En God waarschuwde Jozef in een droom ook voor hem. Daarom ging hij naar het gebied Galilea. 23 Daar ging hij in de stad Nazaret wonen. Zo gebeurde wat de profeten vroeger al hadden gezegd. Want ze hadden gezegd dat Hij een Nazarener[c] zou worden genoemd.

- Mattheüs 2:1 Herodes de Grote was uit het volk van Edom. Edom was altijd een vijand van Israël geweest. Wel had Herodes zich tot het Jodendom bekeerd. Maar dat was waarschijnlijk alleen om politieke redenen.
- Mattheüs 2:4 Met de 'Messias' wordt de Redder van Israël bedoeld, die lang geleden al door God beloofd was.
- Mattheüs 2:23 Dit zou een woordspeling kunnen zijn op het woord 'naziréeër'. Een naziréeër was iemand die een belofte had gedaan om God voor een bepaalde tijd op een bepaalde manier te dienen. Lees Numeri 6:1 en 2.

1 When (A)[a]Jesus then was born at Bethlehem in [b]Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came [c]Wise men from the East to Jerusalem,
2 Saying, Where is the King of the Jews that is born? for we have seen his star in the East, and are come to worship him.
3 When king Herod heard this, he was [d]troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 And gathering together all the [e]chief Priests and [f]Scribes of the people, he asked of them, where Christ should be born.
5 And they said unto him, At Bethlehem in Judea: for so it is written by the Prophet,
6 (B)And thou Bethlehem in the land of Judah, art not the [g]least among the Princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come the governor that [h]shall feed my people Israel.
7 Then Herod privily called the Wise men, and diligently inquired of them the time of the star that appeared,
8 And sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go, and search diligently for the babe: and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come also, and worship him.
9 ¶ So when they had heard the king, they departed: and lo, the star which they had seen in the East, went before them, till it came and stood over the place where the babe was.
10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with an exceeding great joy,
11 And went into the house, and found the babe with Mary his mother, and [i]fell down, and worshipped him, and opened their [j]treasures, and presented unto him gifts, even gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
12 And after they were [k]warned of God in a dream, that they should not go again to Herod, they returned into their country another way.
13 ¶ [l]After their departure, behold, the Angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the babe and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there till I bring thee word, for Herod will seek the babe to destroy him.
14 So he arose and took the babe and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt.
15 And was there unto the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled, which is spoken of the Lord by the (C)Prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
16 ¶ Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked of the Wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently searched out of the Wise men.
17 Then was that fulfilled which is spoken [m]by the Prophet Jeremiah, saying,
18 (D)In Ramah was [n]a voice heard, mourning, and weeping, and great howling: [o]Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they were not.
19 [p]And when Herod was dead, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
20 Saying, Arise, and take the babe and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the babe’s life.
21 Then he arose up, and took the babe and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: yet after he was warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee.
23 And went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Prophets, which was, That he should be called a Nazarite.

Österländska stjärntydare tillber Jesus
2 Jesus föddes i staden Betlehem i Judeen under kung Herodes regeringstid.Vid den tiden kom några österländska stjärntydare och frågade:
2 Var finns judarnas nyfödde kung? Vi har sett hans stjärna gå upp långt borta i öster och har kommit för att tillbe honom.
3 Kung Herodes blev skräckslagen av deras fråga, och hela Jerusalem började surra av rykten.
4 Han samlade judarnas religiösa ledare till ett möte och frågade dem: Har profeterna sagt något om var Messias ska födas?
5 Ja, i Betlehem, svarade de. Så här skrev nämligen profeten Mika:
6 'Hör Betlehem, du är långtifrån en obetydlig stad i Juda. Från dig ska en härskare komma, och han ska regera över mitt folk Israel.'
7 Då kallade Herodes i hemlighet till sig stjärntydarna. Vid detta möte meddelade de honom den exakta tidpunkten då de först hade sett stjärnan. Sedan sa han till dem:
8 Res till Betlehem och leta efter barnet. Och när ni har hittat det, så kom tillbaka och tala om det för mig, så att jag också kan fara dit och tillbe det.
9 Efter samtalet med kungen gav stjärntydarna sig iväg. Då visade sig stjärnan igen! Den gick före dem tills den stannade över Betlehem.
10 Och deras glädje visste inga gränser!
11 De gick in i huset, och när de såg barnet och hans mor Maria föll de på knä för honom och hyllade honom. Sedan tog de fram sina presenter av guld, rökelse och myrra och gav till honom.
12 Men när de återvände till sitt eget land reste de inte genom Jerusalem för att rapportera till kung Herodes. Gud hade nämligen i en dröm varnat dem för att göra det, och därför tog de en annan väg.
Flykten till Egypten
13 När de hade rest visade sig en Herrens ängel för Josef i en dröm. Ängeln sa: Stig upp och fly till Egypten med barnet och hans mor och stanna där tills jag säger till, för kung Herodes kommer att försöka döda barnet.
14 Medan det fortfarande var natt for Josef till Egypten tillsammans med Maria och barnet,
15 och de stannade där tills kung Herodes dog. På detta sätt uppfylldes det som profeten Hosea förutsagt: Jag har kallat min son från Egypten.
16 Herodes blev rasande när han förstod att stjärntydarna hade lurat honom. Han skickade soldater till Betlehem och gav dem order om att döda alla pojkar som var två år eller yngre, både i staden och på landsbygden runtomkring, eftersom stjärntydarna hade sagt att stjärnan hade visat sig för dem två år tidigare.
17 Genom Herodes brutala mördande uppfylldes profeten Jeremias ord:
18 Jämmerrop hörs från Rama, en ständig klagan. Rakel gråter över sina barn och låter sig inte tröstas, för de har alla dött.
Återkomsten till Nasaret
19 När Herodes hade dött visade sig en Herrens ängel för Josef i en dröm i Egypten och sa till honom:
20 Gör dig klar, och ta med dig barnet och hans mor och res tillbaka för de som försökte döda barnet är nu döda.
21 Josef återvände då genast till Israels land med Maria och barnet.
22 Men på vägen tillbaka blev han rädd, eftersom han fick veta att Herodes son Archelaos nu hade blivit kung. I en annan dröm blev han varnad att inte resa till Judeen. De fortsatte då i stället till Galileen
23 och bosatte sig i Nasaret. Därmed uppfylldes det som profeterna förutsagt om Jesus: Han ska kallas nasaré.

The Magi Visit the Messiah
2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(A) during the time of King Herod,(B) Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(C) We saw his star(D) when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem(E) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b]”(F)
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(G) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(H) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(I) in a dream(J) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Escape to Egypt
13 When they had gone, an angel(K) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(L) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(M)
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(N) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[c](O)
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(P)
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel(Q) weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”[d](R)
The Return to Nazareth
19 After Herod died, an angel(S) of the Lord appeared in a dream(T) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(U)
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(V) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(W) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(X) So was fulfilled(Y) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(Z)
