De Farizeeërs vragen Jezus om een teken
16 Er kwamen Farizeeërs en Sadduceeërs naar Jezus toe. Ze vroegen Hem om hun een teken van God te laten zien om te bewijzen dat het waar was wat Hij zei. Dat vroegen ze om Hem uit te dagen. 2 Maar Hij antwoordde: "Als het avond wordt, zeggen jullie: 'Het wordt morgen mooi weer, want de lucht ziet rood.' 3 En 's morgens zeggen jullie: 'Vandaag wordt het slecht weer, want de lucht ziet donkerrood.' Wat zijn jullie toch schijnheilig! Want jullie kunnen wel aan de lucht zien wat er gaat gebeuren. Waarom begrijpen jullie dan niet de betekenis van de tekenen die jullie nu zien? 4 Een ongelovig en ontrouw volk vraagt om een teken. Maar het zal geen ander teken krijgen dan het teken van de profeet Jona."[a] En Hij liep bij hen weg.
De slechte invloed van de Farizeeërs en Sadduceeërs
5 De leerlingen voeren met Jezus naar de overkant van het meer. Ze merkten dat ze vergeten hadden om brood mee te nemen. 6 Toen zei Jezus tegen hen: "Pas goed op voor de gist van de Farizeeërs en Sadduceeërs." 7 Ze praatten er met elkaar over en zeiden: "Dat zegt Jezus vast omdat we vergeten hebben om brood mee te nemen." 8 Toen Jezus dat merkte, zei Hij: "Waarom hebben jullie het er met elkaar over dat jullie geen brood hebben? Wat is jullie geloof toch klein! 9 Begrijpen jullie het dan nóg niet? Weten jullie dan niet meer wat er met de vijf broden gebeurde bij de 5000 mensen? Hoeveel manden brood jullie toen over hadden? 10 En weten jullie niet meer van de zeven broden bij de 4000 mensen? En hoeveel manden brood jullie toen over hadden? 11 Waarom begrijpen jullie niet dat Ik het nu niet over brood had? Ik zei dat jullie moeten oppassen voor de gist van de Farizeeërs en de Sadduceeërs." 12 Toen begrepen ze het. Hij bedoelde niet dat ze moesten oppassen voor de gist van het brood. Maar Hij bedoelde dat ze moesten oppassen voor wat de Farizeeërs en de Sadduceeërs aan de mensen over God leren.
Petrus begrijpt wie Jezus is
13 Ze kwamen in de buurt van de stad Cesarea Filippi. Daar vroeg Hij aan zijn leerlingen: "Wat zeggen de mensen over de Mensenzoon? Wie ben Ik volgens hen?" 14 Ze antwoordden: "Sommige mensen zeggen dat U Johannes de Doper bent. Andere mensen zeggen de profeet Elia.[b] Weer andere mensen zeggen Jeremia, of één van de andere profeten." 15 Maar Jezus zei tegen hen: "Maar Wie ben Ik volgens júllie?" 16 Simon Petrus antwoordde: "U bent de Messias, de Zoon van de levende God." 17 Jezus antwoordde: "Simon, zoon van Jona, wat heerlijk voor je dat je dit begrijpt! Want je weet dat niet doordat een mens je dat heeft laten zien. Maar mijn hemelse Vader heeft jou dat laten zien. 18 Ik zeg je dat jij Petrus (= 'steen') bent. En op deze rots[c] zal Ik mijn gemeente bouwen. De machten van het dodenrijk zullen de gemeente niet kunnen tegenhouden. 19 Ik zal jullie de sleutels geven van het Koninkrijk van God.[d] Jullie kunnen op de aarde alles binden, wat al gebonden is in de hemel. En jullie kunnen op de aarde alles vrijlaten, wat al is vrijgelaten in de hemel." 20 En Hij verbood zijn leerlingen om ook maar tegen íemand te zeggen dat Hij de Messias was.
Jezus vertelt over zijn dood
21 Vanaf dat moment begon Jezus aan zijn leerlingen uit te leggen wat er zou gaan gebeuren. Dat Hij naar Jeruzalem moest gaan. Dat Hij daar mishandeld moest worden door de leiders van het volk, de leiders van de priesters, en de wetgeleerden. Dat Hij zelfs moest worden gedood. Maar ook dat Hij op de derde dag uit de dood zou opstaan.
22 Toen nam Petrus Hem apart. Hij begon Hem streng tegen te spreken. Hij zei: "Heer, God zal ervoor zorgen dat dat niet zal gebeuren!" 23 Maar Jezus draaide Zich om en zei tegen Petrus: "Ga weg, duivel! Je probeert Mij ongehoorzaam aan God te maken. Want jij wil niet wat God wil, maar wat mensen willen!"
Jezus volgen
24 Toen zei Jezus tegen zijn leerlingen: "Als je bij Mij wil horen, moet je stoppen met voor jezelf te leven. Je moet het kruis opnemen[e] en Mij volgen. 25 Want als je je leven voor jezelf wil houden, zul je het juist verliezen. Maar als je je leven opgeeft voor Mij, zul je het juist redden. 26 Wat heb je eraan als je alles hebt wat je hebben wil, maar het kost je je leven? En wat kun je geven in ruil voor je leven? 27 Want de Mensenzoon zal komen met de hemelse macht en majesteit van zijn Vader. Hij zal komen met zijn engelen. Dan zal Hij aan alle mensen geven wat ze hebben verdiend voor het goed of kwaad wat ze hebben gedaan. 28 Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie dat sommigen van jullie niet zullen sterven, vóórdat ze de Mensenzoon in zijn hemelse macht en majesteit hebben gezien."

- Mattheüs 16:14 Elia was een profeet uit de tijd van koning Achab, ongeveer 850 jaar hiervóór. De profeet Maleachi had ruim 300 jaar na Elia gezegd dat God 'de profeet Elia' op een gegeven moment naar de aarde zou sturen. Lees Maleachi 4:5. Hij zei dat dus ruim 400 jaar vóór Jezus' geboorte.
- Mattheüs 16:18 Dit is een woordspeling, want het Griekse woord voor rots is 'petra'.
- Mattheüs 16:19 Ergens de 'sleutels' van hebben betekent dat je daar de macht / het gezag over hebt.
- Mattheüs 16:24 De mensen die naar Jezus luisterden, kenden de Romeinse doodstraf door kruisiging. Iemand die gekruisigd ging worden, moest zelf zijn kruis dragen. Zij begrepen dus heel goed dat 'het kruis opnemen' verband hield met 'dood'. Het gaat hier over het opgeven van je eigen leven, om verder voor Jezus te leven. Lees ook Matteüs 10:38.

16 And the Perushim and Tzedukim approached, to test Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, asking him to present them with an ot (sign) from Shomayim.
2 But in reply, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to them, When it is erev, you say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is fiery red.
3 And in the boker (morning) you say, There will be stormy weather today, for the sky is overcast fiery red and threatening. You have daas to distinguish the signs of the appearance of the sky, but you can’t discern the signs of the times? [T.N. See Ro 1:18]
4 A dor rah umnaef (an evil and adulterous generation) demands an ot (sign), and no ot will be given it except the ot of Yonah HaNavi. And having left them, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach went away.
5 When the Moshiach’s talmidim arrived at the other side, they had forgotten to take lechem.
6 But Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to them, Take special precaution against the chametz (swelling leaven) of the Perushim and Tzedukim.
7 But they began reasoning among themselves, saying, We took no lechem.
8 But Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, aware of their machshavot (thoughts), said, You men of little emunah, why do you reason among yourselves that you have no lechem?
9 Do you not yet have binah or remember the five loaves of the chamesh elafim (five thousand), and how many baskets full you took up?
10 Or the shevah loaves of the arbaat elafim (four thousand), and how many large baskets full you took up?
11 How is it that you do not chap (grasp mentally) that I did not speak to you concerning lechem? But beware of the chametz (swelling [like evil, like gaavah, pride], all-permeating leaven) of the Perushim and Tzedukim.
12 Then Moshiach’s talmidim understood that Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach did not say to beware of the chametz of the lechem, but of the chametz of the teaching of the Perushim and the Tzedukim.
13 Now, having arrived in the district of Caesarea Philippi, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach began asking his talmidim, saying, Who do men say that [I] the Ben HaAdam am?
14 And Moshiach’s talmidim said, Some say Yochanan of the tevilah of teshuva, and others say, Eliyahu HaNavi, but still others say, Yirmeyah or one of the Neviim.
15 He says to them, But you, who do you consider me to be?
16 And, Shimon Kefa said in reply, You are the Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, the Ben Elohim Chayyim!
17 And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said in reply to him, Ashrey atah (happy are you), Shimon Bar Yonah, because basar vadahm (flesh and blood) did not give you this hisgalus (revelation), but Avi shbaShomayim.
18 And I also say to you that you are Shimon Kefa [Petros] and upon this TSUR I will build my Kehillah, my Chavurah (the Community of Moshiach) and the shaarei Sheol (gates of Sheol) shall not overpower it.
19 I will give you the maftechot Malchut HaShomayim (keys of the Kingdom of Heaven); and whatever you shall bind as asur (prohibited) on haaretz shall be bound as asur (prohibited) in Shomayim, and whatever you shall loose as mutar (permitted) on haaretz shall be loosed as mutar (permitted) in Shomayim.
20 Then Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach gave the directive to his talmidim that they should tell no one that he was the Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach.
21 From that point he began to explain to his talmidim that it was necessary that Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach go to Yerushalayim, and suffer many things from the Zekenim (Elders), and the Rashei Hakohanim (the Chief Priests) and the Sofrim (Scribes) and it was necessary for Moshiach to be killed and have his histalkus (passing), that he would undergo the Techiyas HaMoshiach (Resurrection of Moshiach) on Yom HaShlishi.
22 And Kefa took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, Chas vshalom (G-d forbid)! Adoni, this shall never happen to you!
23 But Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach turned and said to Kefa, Get behind me, Hasatan! You are a michshol (stumbling block) to me; for you are not setting your mind on the things of Hashem, but the things of Bnei Adam!
24 Then Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to his talmidim, If anyone wishes to come after me, let him turn in hinnazrut (self-denial), and take up his etz shel hakarav atzmo (tree of self-sacrifice), and follow me.
25 For whoever wishes to save his nefesh shall lose it; but whoever loses his nefesh on account of me [Moshiach] shall find it.
26 For what will a man be benefited if he acquires the whole world and forfeits his neshamah, or what will a man give in exchange for his neshamah?
27 For the Ben HaAdam [Moshiach] is about to come in the kavod of his Av with his malachim and will then recompense every man according to his maasim.
28 Omein, I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who shall not taste death until they see the Bias of the Ben HaAdam [Moshiach] coming in his Malchut.

The Demand for a Sign(A)
16 The Pharisees and Sadducees(B) came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.(C)
2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a](D) 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.”(E) Jesus then left them and went away.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”(F)
7 They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”
8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith,(G) why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(H) 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(I) 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.(J)
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(K)
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(L) others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”(M)
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”(N)
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,(O) but by my Father in heaven.(P) 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b](Q) and on this rock I will build my church,(R) and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys(S) of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[d] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[e] loosed in heaven.”(T) 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone(U) that he was the Messiah.
Jesus Predicts His Death(V)
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem(W) and suffer many things(X) at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(Y) and that he must be killed(Z) and on the third day(AA) be raised to life.(AB)
22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”
23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!(AC) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AD) 25 For whoever wants to save their life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.(AE) 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man(AF) is going to come(AG) in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.(AH)
28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
