15 Alors des pharisiens et des spécialistes de la loi vinrent de Jérusalem trouver Jésus et dirent: 2 «Pourquoi tes disciples transgressent-ils la tradition des anciens? En effet, ils ne se lavent pas les mains quand ils prennent leur repas.» 3 Il leur répondit: «Et vous, pourquoi transgressez-vous le commandement de Dieu au profit de votre tradition? 4 En effet, Dieu a dit: Honore ton père et ta mère[a] et: Celui qui maudira son père ou sa mère sera puni de mort[b]. 5 Mais d’après vous, celui qui dira à son père ou à sa mère: ‘Ce dont j'aurais pu t'assister est une offrande à Dieu’ 6 n'est pas tenu d'honorer son père [ou sa mère]. Vous annulez ainsi la parole de Dieu au profit de votre tradition. 7 Hypocrites, Esaïe a bien prophétisé sur vous, quand il a dit: 8 Ce peuple [prétend s'approcher de moi et] m'honore des lèvres, mais son cœur est éloigné de moi. 9 C'est faussement qu'ils m'honorent en donnant des enseignements qui sont des commandements humains.[c]»
10 Jésus appela la foule à lui et dit: «Ecoutez-moi et comprenez bien: 11 ce n'est pas ce qui entre dans la bouche qui rend l'homme impur, mais ce qui sort de la bouche. Voilà ce qui rend l'homme impur.»
12 Alors ses disciples s'approchèrent et lui dirent: «Sais-tu que les pharisiens ont été scandalisés d'entendre ces paroles?» 13 Il répondit: «Toute plante que n'a pas plantée mon Père céleste sera déracinée. 14 Laissez-les: ce sont des aveugles qui conduisent des aveugles; si un aveugle conduit un aveugle, ils tomberont tous les deux dans un fossé.»
15 Pierre prit la parole et lui dit: «Explique-nous cette parabole.» 16 Jésus dit: «Vous aussi, vous êtes encore sans intelligence? 17 Ne comprenez-vous pas encore que tout ce qui entre dans la bouche va dans le ventre, puis est évacué dans les toilettes? 18 Mais ce qui sort de la bouche vient du cœur, et c'est ce qui rend l'homme impur. 19 En effet, c'est du cœur que viennent les mauvaises pensées, les meurtres, les adultères, l'immoralité sexuelle, les vols, les faux témoignages, les calomnies. 20 Voilà ce qui rend l'homme impur; mais manger sans s'être lavé les mains, cela ne rend pas l'homme impur.»
Jésus et la femme non juive
21 Jésus partit de là et se retira dans le territoire de Tyr et de Sidon. 22 Alors une femme cananéenne[d] qui venait de cette région lui cria: «Aie pitié de moi, Seigneur, Fils de David[e]! Ma fille est cruellement tourmentée par un démon.» 23 Il ne lui répondit pas un mot; ses disciples s'approchèrent et lui demandèrent: «Renvoie-la, car elle crie derrière nous.» 24 Il répondit: «Je n'ai été envoyé qu'aux brebis perdues de la communauté d'Israël.» 25 Mais elle vint se prosterner devant lui et dit: «Seigneur, secours-moi!» 26 Il répondit: «Il n'est pas bien de prendre le pain des enfants et de le jeter aux petits chiens.» 27 «Oui, Seigneur, dit-elle, mais les petits chiens mangent les miettes qui tombent de la table de leurs maîtres.» 28 Alors Jésus lui dit: «Femme, ta foi est grande. Sois traitée conformément à ton désir.» A partir de ce moment, sa fille fut guérie.
29 Jésus quitta cet endroit et vint sur les bords du lac de Galilée. Il monta sur la montagne et s'y assit. 30 Une grande foule s'approcha de lui; il y avait parmi eux des boiteux, des aveugles, des muets, des estropiés et beaucoup d'autres malades. On les amena aux pieds de Jésus et il les guérit, 31 de sorte que la foule était émerveillée de voir les muets parler, les estropiés être guéris, les boiteux marcher, les aveugles voir, et elle célébrait la gloire du Dieu d'Israël.
Multiplication des pains pour 4000 hommes
32 Jésus appela ses disciples et leur dit: «Je suis rempli de compassion pour cette foule, car voilà trois jours qu'ils sont près de moi et ils n'ont rien à manger. Je ne veux pas les renvoyer à jeun, de peur que les forces ne leur manquent en chemin.» 33 Les disciples lui dirent: «Comment nous procurer dans cet endroit désert assez de pains pour rassasier une si grande foule?» 34 Jésus leur demanda: «Combien avez-vous de pains?» «Sept, répondirent-ils, et quelques petits poissons.» 35 Alors il fit asseoir la foule par terre, 36 prit les sept pains et les poissons et, après avoir remercié Dieu, il les rompit et les donna à ses disciples, qui les distribuèrent à la foule. 37 Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés, et l'on emporta sept corbeilles pleines des morceaux qui restaient. 38 Ceux qui avaient mangé étaient 4000 hommes, sans compter les femmes et les enfants.
39 Ensuite, il renvoya la foule, monta dans la barque et se rendit dans la région de Magdala.

The Tradition of the Elders
15 Then(A) Jesus was approached by Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, who asked,(B) 2 “Why do your disciples(C) break the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat.”[a](D)
3 He answered them, “Why do you break God’s commandment because of your tradition? 4 For God said:[b] Honor your father and your mother;[c](E) and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.[d](F) 5 But you say, ‘Whoever tells his father or mother, “Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple,” 6 he does not have to honor his father.’[e] In this way, you have nullified the word of God[f] because of your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:
8 This people[g] honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me.
9 They worship me in vain,
teaching as doctrines human commands.”[h](G)
Defilement Is from Within
10 Summoning the crowd, he told them, “Listen and understand: 11 It’s not what goes into the mouth that defiles(H) a person, but what comes out of the mouth—this defiles a person.”(I)
12 Then the disciples came up and told him, “Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?”
13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father didn’t plant will be uprooted.(J) 14 Leave them alone! They are blind guides.[i] And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.”(K)
15 Then Peter said, “Explain this parable to us.”(L)
16 “Do you still lack understanding?” he[j] asked. 17 “Don’t you realize[k] that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated?[l] 18 But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person.(M) 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies,(N) slander.(O) 20 These are the things that defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person.”(P)
A Gentile Mother’s Faith
21 When Jesus left there,(Q) he withdrew to the area of Tyre and Sidon.(R) 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came and kept crying out,[m] “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely tormented by a demon.”(S)
23 Jesus did not say a word to her. His disciples(T) approached him and urged him, “Send her away because she’s crying out after us.”
24 He replied, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”(U)
25 But she came, knelt before him, and said, “Lord, help me!”
26 He answered, “It isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”(V)
27 “Yes, Lord,” she said, “yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”
28 Then Jesus replied to her, “Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want.” And from that moment[n] her daughter was healed.(W)
Healing Many People
29 Moving on from there,(X) Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee.(Y) He went up on a mountain and sat there, 30 and large crowds came to him, including the lame, the blind, the crippled, those unable to speak, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he healed them. 31 So the crowd was amazed when they saw those unable to speak talking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing,(Z) and they gave glory to the God of Israel.
Feeding of the Four Thousand
32 Jesus called his disciples and said,(AA) “I have compassion on the crowd, because they’ve already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, otherwise they might collapse on the way.”
33 The disciples said to him, “Where could we get enough bread in this desolate place(AB) to feed such a crowd?”
34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked them.
“Seven,” they said, “and a few small fish.”
35 After commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 he took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.(AC) 37 They all ate and were satisfied. They collected the leftover pieces—seven large baskets full. 38 Now there were four thousand men who had eaten, besides women and children. 39 After dismissing the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.[o](AD)

That Which Defiles(A)
15 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”(B)
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[a](C) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[b](D) 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8 “‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.(E)’[c](F)”
10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them,(G) but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”(H)

16 “Are you still so dull?”(M) Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart,(N) and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.(O) 20 These are what defile a person;(P) but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
The Faith of a Canaanite Woman(Q)
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.(R) 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David,(S) have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”(T)
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”
24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”(U)
25 The woman came and knelt before him.(V) “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith!(W) Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.
Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(X)(Y)(Z)
29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.(AA) 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.(AB)
32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people;(AC) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”
33 His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”
34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them(AD) and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(AE) 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.

Defilement Comes from Within(A)

A Gentile Shows Her Faith(S)

And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.”

25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”
26 But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little (W)dogs.”
27 And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”
28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, (X)great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
Jesus Heals Great Multitudes(Y)
29 (Z)Jesus departed from there, (AA)skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there. 30 (AB)Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, [d]maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ (AC)feet, and He healed them. 31 So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the [e]maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they (AD)glorified the God of Israel.

32 (AF)Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”
33 (AG)Then His disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?”
34 Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?”
And they said, “Seven, and a few little fish.”
35 So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. 36 And (AH)He took the seven loaves and the fish and (AI)gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude. 37 So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left. 38 Now those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 (AJ)And He sent away the multitude, got into the boat, and came to the region of [f]Magdala.
