John the Baptist Sends Messengers to Jesus(A)
11 Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to (B)teach and to preach in their cities.
2 (C)And when John had heard (D)in prison about the works of Christ, he [a]sent two of his disciples 3 and said to Him, “Are You (E)the Coming One, or do we look for another?”
4 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 (F)The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and (G)the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is he who is not (H)offended because of Me.”
7 (I)As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? (J)A reed shaken by the wind? 8 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, (K)and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he of whom it is written:
(L)‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’
11 “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 (M)And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 (N)For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to receive it, he is (O)Elijah who is to come. 15 (P)He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
16 (Q)“But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, 17 and saying:
‘We played the flute for you,
And you did not dance;
We mourned to you,
And you did not [b]lament.’
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a [c]winebibber, (R)a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ (S)But wisdom is justified by her [d]children.”
Woe to the Impenitent Cities(T)
20 (U)Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago (V)in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say to you, (W)it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, (X)who[e] are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say to you (Y)that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”
Jesus Gives True Rest(Z)
25 (AA)At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that (AB)You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent (AC)and have revealed them to babes. 26 Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 27 (AD)All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. (AE)Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 Come to (AF)Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you (AG)and learn from Me, for I am [f]gentle and (AH)lowly in heart, (AI)and you will find rest for your souls. 30 (AJ)For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

11 Toen Jezus zijn opdrachten aan de twaalf leerlingen had gegeven, ging Hij daar weg om in de steden les te geven en te preken.
Jezus en Johannes de Doper
2 Johannes de Doper, die in de gevangenis zat, hoorde wat Christus allemaal deed. Hij vroeg aan twee van zijn eigen leerlingen om naar Jezus te gaan. 3 Ze moesten Hem vragen: "Bent U het die zou komen, of wachten we op iemand anders?" 4 Jezus antwoordde hun: "Ga terug en vertel Johannes wat jullie horen en zien. 5 Blinde mensen gaan zien, verlamde mensen gaan lopen, zieke mensen worden gezond, dove mensen gaan horen, doden worden levend en arme mensen horen het goede nieuws.[a] 6 Als mensen Mij geloven, zal dat heerlijk voor hen zijn!"
Jezus legt uit wie Johannes de Doper is
7 Johannes' leerlingen vertrokken weer. Toen begon Jezus tegen de groep mensen om Hem heen over Johannes te spreken. Hij zei: "Waar zijn jullie in de woestijn naar gaan kijken? Naar iemand die zo onbelangrijk is als een rietstengel die heen en weer wuift in de wind? 8 Nee. Maar waar zijn jullie dan naar gaan kijken? Naar een rijk man in dure kleren? Nee, want de mensen met dure kleren wonen in de paleizen. 9 Maar waarom zijn jullie dan gaan kijken? Om een profeet te zien? Ja! Ik zeg jullie dat hij zelfs nog veel belangrijker is dan een profeet. 10 Hij is de man over wie in de Boeken staat: 'Ik stuur mijn boodschapper voor U uit. Hij zal de weg voor U vrijmaken.' 11 Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie dat van de mensen die uit vrouwen geboren zijn, niemand belangrijker is dan Johannes de Doper. Maar de minst belangrijke mens in het Koninkrijk van God zal belangrijker zijn dan hij.
12 Vanaf het moment dat Johannes de Doper begon te preken tot nu toe, verzetten mensen zich met geweld tegen het Koninkrijk van God. Machtige mensen[b] proberen het te grijpen. 13 Want dit Koninkrijk is het waarover alle profeten tot Johannes en de wet van Mozes hebben geprofeteerd. 14 Geloof Mij als Ik zeg: hij is de profeet Elia, van wie in de Boeken is gezegd dat hij zou komen.[c] 15 Als je oren hebt, moet je ook goed luisteren!
16 Maar waarmee zal Ik deze mensen vergelijken? Ze lijken op de kinderen die op de markt zitten en naar hun vriendjes roepen: 17 'We gingen bruiloftje spelen, maar jullie wilden niet dansen. Toen gingen we begrafenisje spelen, maar jullie wilden niet treuren.' 18 Ik bedoel dit: Johannes is gekomen, en hij at geen brood en dronk geen wijn. Van hem zeiden jullie: 'Er zit een duivelse geest in hem.' 19 Toen kwam de Mensenzoon, die wél eet en wél wijn drinkt. Van Hem zeggen jullie: 'Hij zit maar te vreten en te zuipen. En Hij is bevriend met belasting-ontvangers en andere slechte mensen.' Het is ook nooit goed!
Maar alleen verstandige mensen hebben Gods wijsheid herkend."
Jezus waarschuwt de mensen die Hem niet willen geloven
20 Toen begon Jezus een aantal steden te waarschuwen. Hij had daar heel veel wonderen gedaan, maar toch wilden de mensen daar niet gaan leven zoals God het wil. Daarom zei Hij: "Pas maar op, Chorazin! En jij ook, Betsaïda! Het zal slecht met jullie aflopen! 21 Als vroeger in Tyrus en Sidon de wonderen waren gebeurd die bij jullie zijn gebeurd, dan zouden ze allang gestopt zijn met de slechte dingen die ze deden. Ze zouden zijn gaan leven zoals God het wil. 22 Ik zeg jullie dat Tyrus en Sidon minder zwaar gestraft zullen worden op de dag van het laatste oordeel, dan jullie. 23 En jij, Kapernaüm, zul je tot in de hemel worden opgetild? Nee! Je zal in het dodenrijk neerdalen! Want als vroeger in Sodom de wonderen waren gebeurd die in jou zijn gebeurd, dan zou die stad nu nog hebben bestaan en niet verwoest zijn.[d] 24 Ik zeg jou dat Sodom minder zwaar gestraft zal worden op de dag van het laatste oordeel, dan jij."
25 Toen zei Jezus: "Dank U, Vader, Heer van de hemel en de aarde! U heeft aan eenvoudige mensen bekend gemaakt wat uw plannen zijn. Maar wijze en verstandige mensen begrijpen er niets van. 26 Ja Vader, want U wilde het op die manier doen."
Wie moe is, kan rust vinden bij Jezus
27 En Jezus zei: "Mijn Vader heeft alles aan Mij gegeven. Niemand kent de Zoon. Alleen de Vader kent Hem. En niemand kent de Vader. Alleen de Zoon kent Hem. En ook de mensen aan wie de Zoon wil laten zien wie de Vader is, kennen de Vader. 28 Kom naar Mij als je moe bent. Kom naar Mij als je gebogen gaat onder het gewicht van je problemen! Ik zal je rust geven. 29 Doe wat Ik je zeg. Leer van Mij. Want Ik ben vriendelijk en geduldig en bescheiden. Daarom zul je bij Mij innerlijke rust vinden. 30 Want wat Ik je te doen zal geven, is niet te moeilijk of te zwaar voor je."

Jesus and John the Baptist(A)
11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(B) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[a]
2 When John,(C) who was in prison,(D) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(E) or should we expect someone else?”
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[b] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(F) 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(G)
7 As John’s(H) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(I) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(J) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(M) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(N) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(O)
16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating(P) nor drinking,(Q) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(R) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
Woe on Unrepentant Towns(S)
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(T) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(U) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(V) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(W) 23 And you, Capernaum,(X) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[e](Y) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(Z)
The Father Revealed in the Son(AA)
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(AB) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(AC) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me(AD) by my Father.(AE) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(AF)
28 “Come to me,(AG) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(AH) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(AI) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(AJ) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(AK)
