ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା ଓ ମନୁଷ୍ୟକୃତ ନିୟମ
(ମାଥିଉ 15:1-20)
7 କେତେକ ଫାରୂଶୀ ଓ କେତେକ ଧର୍ମଶାସ୍ତ୍ରୀ ଯିରୁଶାଲମରୁ ଆସି ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ଗ୍ଭରିପଟେ ରୁଣ୍ତ ହୋଇଗଲେ। 2 ସେମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କର କେତେକ ଶିଷ୍ୟଙ୍କୁ ଅପବିତ୍ର ହାତରେ ଅର୍ଥାତ୍ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଧାରିତ ପଦ୍ଧତିରେ ହାତ ନ ଧୋଇ ଖାଉଥିବାର ଦେଖିଲେ। 3 ଫାରୂଶୀ ଓ ସମସ୍ତ ଯିହୂଦୀମାନେ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଧାରିତ ପଦ୍ଧତିରେ ହାତ ନ ଧୋଇ କେବେ ହେଲେ ଖାଉ ନ ଥିଲେ। ସେମାନେ ତାହାଙ୍କର ମହାନ ପୂର୍ବ ପୁରୁଷଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ପ୍ରଚଳିତ ପରମ୍ପରା ପାଳନ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ଏହା କରୁଥିଲେ। 4 ଏପରିକି ବଜାରରୁ ଅଣାଯାଉଥିବା ଖାଦ୍ୟ ପଦାର୍ଥକୁ ସେମାନେ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଧାରିତ ପଦ୍ଧତିରେ ନ ଧୋଇ ଖାଆନ୍ତି ନାହିଁ। ଗିନା, କଳସ, ତମ୍ବାପାତ୍ର ଆଦି ମାଜିବା ଧୋଇବା ଭଳି ଅନେକ ପରମ୍ପରା ସେମାନେ ପାଳନ କରନ୍ତି।
5 ତେଣୁ ଫାରୂଶୀ ଓ ଧର୍ମଶାସ୍ତ୍ରୀମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ପଗ୍ଭରିଲେ, “ତୁମ୍ଭର ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନେ ପୂର୍ବ ପୁରୁଷରୁ ପ୍ରଚଳିତ ପରମ୍ପରାଗୁଡ଼ିକୁ କାହିଁକି ପାଳୁ ନାହାନ୍ତି? ସେମାନେ ଅପବିତ୍ର ହାତରେ ଖାଆନ୍ତି, ସେମାନେ ଏଭଳି କାହିଁକି କରନ୍ତି?”
6 ଯୀଶୁ କହିଲେ, “ତୁମ୍ଭଭଳି କପଟୀମାନଙ୍କ ସମ୍ବନ୍ଧରେ ଯିଶାଇୟ ଯାହା ଭବିଷ୍ୟଦ୍ବାଣୀ କରିଥିଲେ ତାହା ଯଥାର୍ଥ, ଯିଶାଇୟ ଲେଖିଥିଲେ,
‘ଏ ଲୋକମାନେ କେବଳ ମୁଖରେ ମୋର ସମ୍ମାନ କରନ୍ତି,
କିନ୍ତୁ ସେମାନଙ୍କ ମନ ମୋ'ଠାରୁ ବହୁ ଦୂରରେ।
7 ସେମାନଙ୍କର ମୋ’ ପାଇଁ ଉପାସନା ନିରର୍ଥକ,
କାରଣ ସେମାନେ ଲୋକଙ୍କୁ ତାହାଙ୍କ ସିଦ୍ଧାନ୍ତ ଭାବରେ ମନୁଷ୍ୟକୃତ ନିୟମ ମାନିବାକୁ ଉପଦେଶ ଦିଅନ୍ତି।’(A)
8 ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ଆଦେଶ ତ୍ୟାଗ କରିଛ। ଏବେ ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ମନୁଷ୍ୟକୃତ ପରମ୍ପରାକୁ ଧରି ବସିଛ।”
9 ଯୀଶୁ ପୁଣି ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ, “ନିଜ ପରମ୍ପରା ପାଳନ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ଆଦେଶ ତ୍ୟାଗ କରି ଦେଇ ନିଜକୁ ଚତୁର ବୋଲି ଭାବୁଛ। 10 ମୋଶା କହିଥିଲେ, ‘ତୁମ୍ଭେ ତୁମ୍ଭ ବାପା-ମାଙ୍କୁ ସମ୍ମାନ କର’।(B) ସେ ମଧ୍ୟ କହିଥିଲେ, ‘ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକ ନିଜ ବାପା-ମାଙ୍କୁ ଖରାପ କଥା କହେ, ତାକୁ ମାରି ଦିଆଯିବା ଉଚିତ୍’।(C) 11 କିନ୍ତୁ ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ଉପଦେଶ ଦେଉଛ ଯେ, ଜଣେ ଲୋକ ତା'ର ବାପାମାଙ୍କୁ କହି ପାରିବ, ‘ମୋର ଯେଉଁ ପଦାର୍ଥଟିରେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ଲାଭ ହୋଇ ପାରିଥା’ନ୍ତା, ସେହି ପଦାର୍ଥ ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭ ପାଇଁ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରି ପାରିବି ନାହିଁ, କାରଣ ତାହା ମୁଁ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କୁ ସମର୍ପଣ କରିବି।’ 12 ଏହିଭଳି ସେହି ଲୋକକୁ ତା'ର ବାପାମାଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ କିଛି କରିବା ପାଇଁ ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ଅନୁମତି ଦେଉ ନାହଁ। 13 ନିଜ ନିୟମ ପାଳିବା ଅଧିକ ମହତ୍ତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ବୋଲି ମନେ କରି ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ତାହା ପାଳିବାକୁ ଉପଦେଶ ଦେଉଛ। ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ଆଦେଶ ପାଳିବା ମହତ୍ତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ନୁହେଁ ବୋଲି ଉପଦେଶ ଦେଇ ତାହା ଏଡ଼େଇ ଦେଉଛ। ଏହିଭଳି ଅନେକ କାମ ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ କରୁଛ।”
14 ଯୀଶୁ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ପୁଣି ପାଖକୁ ଡାକିଲେ। ସେ କହିଲେ ପ୍ରତ୍ୟେକ ଲୋକ ମୋର କଥା ଶୁଣ ଓ ବୁଝ। 15 ଏଭଳି କୌଣସି ବସ୍ତୁ ନାହିଁ, ଯାହା ବାହାରୁ ମନୁଷ୍ୟ ଭିତରକୁ ପ୍ରବେଶ କରି ତାକୁ ଅଶୁଦ୍ଧ କରି ପକାଇବ। ବରଂ ଯେଉଁ ବସ୍ତୁ ମନୁଷ୍ୟର ଭିତରୁ ବାହାରି ଥାଏ, ତାହା ହିଁ ତାକୁ ଅଶୁଦ୍ଧ କରିପାରେ।’’ 16 [a]
17 ତା'ପରେ ଯୀଶୁ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ଛାଡ଼ି ଘର ଭିତରକୁ ଗଲେ। ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନେ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ଏ ଦୃଷ୍ଟାନ୍ତ କଥା ବିଷୟରେ ପଗ୍ଭରିଲେ। 18 ଯୀଶୁ କହିଲେ, “ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ମଧ୍ୟ, ଅନ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କ ଭଳି କ’ଣ ବୁଝି ପାରିଲ ନାହିଁ? ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ କ’ଣ ବୁଝି ପାରୁ ନ ଯେ, ଲୋକର ଭିତରକୁ ବାହାରୁ କୌଣସି ବସ୍ତୁ ଗଲେ ତାହା ସେହି ଲୋକକୁ ଦୂଷିତ କରିପାରେ ନାହିଁ। 19 କାରଣ ଖାଦ୍ୟ ତା'ର ହୃଦୟକୁ ନ ଯାଇ ପେଟ ଭିତରକୁ ଯାଏ ଓ ପୁଣି ମଳ ଆକାରରେ ବାହାରକୁ ବାହାରି ଯାଏ।” ଏହା କହି ଯୀଶୁ ସମସ୍ତ ଖାଦ୍ୟ-ପଦାର୍ଥ ଯେ ଶୁଦ୍ଧ ଅଟେ, ଏହା ପ୍ରମାଣିତ କଲେ।
20 ସେ ପୁଣି କହିଲେ, “ମନୁଷ୍ୟର ଭିତରୁ ଯାହା ବାହାରକୁ ଆସେ, ତାହା ତାହାକୁ ଅଶୁଦ୍ଧ କରିଥାଏ। 21 ମନୁଷ୍ୟ ଭିତରେ, ତା'ର ମନରେ, ଏହିସବୁ ଖରାପ ଜିନିଷ ଜନ୍ମ ଦିଏ, ମନ୍ଦ ବିଗ୍ଭର, ଯୌନଗତ ପାପ, ଗ୍ଭେରି, ହତ୍ୟା। 22 ବ୍ୟଭିଗ୍ଭର, ଲାଳସା ବା ଲୋଭ, ଦୁଷ୍ଟାତ୍ମା, ମନ୍ଦକାମ କରିବା, ପ୍ରବଞ୍ଚନା, ଈର୍ଷା, ଚୁଗୁଲି, ଅହଙ୍କାର ଏବଂ ମୂର୍ଖତା। 23 ଏହିସବୁ ଖରାପ ଜିନିଷ ମନୁଷ୍ୟର ଭିତରୁ ବାହାରକୁ ଆସିଥାଏ। ଏଗୁଡ଼ିକ ମନୁଷ୍ୟକୁ ଅଶୁଦ୍ଧ କରିପକାଏ।”
ଯୀଶୁ ଜଣେ ଅଣଯିହୂଦୀ ସ୍ତ୍ରୀଲୋକକୁ ସାହାଯ୍ୟ କଲେ
(ମାଥିଉ 15:21-28)
24 ଯୀଶୁ ସେ ସ୍ଥାନ ଛାଡ଼ି ସୋରର ଆଖ ପାଖ ଅଞ୍ଚଳକୁ ଗଲେ। ସେଠାରେ ଯୀଶୁ ଗୋଟିଏ ଘର ଭିତରକୁ ଗଲେ। ସେ ଗ୍ଭହୁଁ ନ ଥିଲେ ଯେ, କୌଣସି ଲୋକ ତାହାଙ୍କର ଆସିଥିବା ଖବର ଜାଣନ୍ତୁ। କିନ୍ତୁ ସେ ସେଠାରେ ଲୁଚି ରହି ପାରିଲେ ନାହିଁ। 25 ଜଣେ ସ୍ତ୍ରୀଲୋକ ଯୀଶୁ ଆସିଥିବା ଖବର ଶୁଣି ପାରିଲା। ତା'ର ଝିଅ ଦେହରେ ଦୁଷ୍ଟାତ୍ମା ପ୍ରବେଶ କରି ରହିଥିଲା। ତେଣୁ ସେ ସଙ୍ଗେ ସଙ୍ଗେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ପାଖକୁ ଆସି ତାହାଙ୍କ ପାଦ ତଳେ ପଡ଼ିଗଲା। 26 ସେ ସ୍ତ୍ରୀ ଲୋକଟି ଗ୍ରୀକ୍ ଥିଲା। ସେ ସୁର ଫୈନୀକୀୟାଠାରେ ଜନ୍ମ ହୋଇଥିଲା। ସେ ତା’ ଝିଅଠାରୁ ଭୂତକୁ ବାହାର କରି ଦେବା ପାଇଁ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା କଲା।
27 ଯୀଶୁ ତାହାକୁ କହିଲେ, “ପ୍ରଥମେ ପିଲାମାନଙ୍କୁ ତୃପ୍ତ ହେବାକୁ ଦିଅ, କାରଣ ପିଲାମାନଙ୍କର ରୋଟୀ ନେଇ ଯାଇ କୁକୁରମାନଙ୍କ ଆଗରେ ଫିଙ୍ଗି ଦେବା ଠିକ୍ ନୁହେଁ।”
28 ସେ ସ୍ତ୍ରୀ ଲୋକଟି ଉତ୍ତର ଦେଲୋ, “ହେ ପ୍ରଭୁ, ତାହା ସତ୍ୟ, କିନ୍ତୁ ପିଲାମାନେ ଖାଉଥିବା ସମୟରେ ତଳକୁ ଖସି ପଡ଼ୁଥିବା ଖାଦ୍ୟର ଟିକି ଟିକି ଅଂଶତକ ଟେବୁଲ ତଳେ ଥିବା କୁକୁରମାନେ ମଧ୍ୟ ଖାଇ ଥା’ନ୍ତି।”
29 ତା'ପରେ ଯୀଶୁ ସେହି ସ୍ତ୍ରୀଲୋକଟିକୁ କହିଲେ, “ଏହା ହିଁ ଉପଯୁକ୍ତ ଉତ୍ତର। ଏବେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଘରକୁ ଯାଇ ପାର। ଭୂତ ତୁମ୍ଭର ଝିଅକୁ ଛାଡ଼ି ଗ୍ଭଲି ଗଲାଣି।”
30 ସେହି ସ୍ତ୍ରୀ ଲୋକଟି ଘରକୁ ଯାଇ ଦେଖିଲା ଯେ ତାହାର ଝିଅ ଖଟରେ ଶୋଇଛି। ଦୁଷ୍ଟାତ୍ମା ତା’ ଦେହରୁ ବାହାରି ଗ୍ଭଲି ଯାଇଛିା
ଯୀଶୁ ଜଣେ ମୂକ ବଧିର ଲୋକକୁ ସୁସ୍ଥ କଲେ
31 ତା'ପରେ ଯୀଶୁ ସୋର ଆଖ ପାଖ ଅଞ୍ଚଳ ଛାଡ଼ି ଦେକାପଲି ରାସ୍ତାରେ ସୀଦୋନ ହୋଇ ଗାଲିଲୀ ହ୍ରଦ ପାଖକୁ ଆସିଲେ। 32 ସେଠାରେ କେତେକ ଲୋକ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ପାଖକୁ ଗୋଟିଏ ଲୋକକୁ ଆଣିଲେ। ସେ ଲୋକଟି ମୂକ ଓ ବଧିର ଥିଲା। ଲୋକମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଅନୁରୋଧ କଲେ ଯେ, ସେ ତାହାଙ୍କ ହାତ ଲୋକଟି ଉପରେ ରଖି ତାକୁ ଭଲ କରି ଦିଅନ୍ତୁ।
33 ଯୀଶୁ ସେ ଲୋକଟିକୁ ଭିଡ଼ଠାରୁ ଟିକିଏ ଦୂରକୁ ଗୋଟିଏ ପାଖକୁ ନେଇଗଲେ। ସେ ସେହି ଲୋକଟିର କାନ ଭିତରେ ନିଜ ଅଙ୍ଗୁଳିଗୁଡ଼ିକୁ ରଖିଲେ। ତା'ପରେ ସେ ଛେପ ପକାଇଲେ ଓ ଲୋକଟିର ଜିଭକୁ ଛୁଇଁଲେ। 34 ଯୀଶୁ ପୁଣି ସ୍ୱର୍ଗ ଆଡ଼କୁ ଗ୍ଭହିଁ ଦୀର୍ଘ ନିଶ୍ୱାସ ପକାଇଲେ। ସେ ଲୋକଟିକୁ କହିଲେ, 35 “ଇପ୍ପଥଃ” ଅର୍ଥାତ ‘ଖୋଲିଯାଉ। ତତ୍କ୍ଷଣାତ୍ ତା'ର କାନ ଖୋଲିଗଲା। ଜିଭର ଗ୍ରନ୍ଥି ଖୋଲିଗଲା। ସେ ସ୍ପଷ୍ଟ ଭାବରେ କହି ପାରିଲା।
36 ଯୀଶୁ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ଆଜ୍ଞା ଦେଲେ ଯେ ଏ ବିଷୟରେ କାହାକୁ କିଛି ଯେପରି ନ କୁହନ୍ତି। ଯୀଶୁ ସଦାବେଳେ ଲୋକଙ୍କୁ ଆଜ୍ଞା ଦେଉଥିଲେ ଯେ ସେମାନେ ଅନ୍ୟ କାହାକୁ ତାହାଙ୍କ ବିଷୟରେ କିଛି ନ କୁହନ୍ତୁ। କିନ୍ତୁ ଏହାର ପରିଣାମରେ ଲୋକେ ତାହାଙ୍କ ବିଷୟରେ ଅଧିକରୁ ଅଧିକ ପ୍ରଗ୍ଭର କରୁଥିଲେ। 37 ଲୋକମାନେ ବାସ୍ତବରେ ଆଶ୍ଚର୍ଯ୍ୟ ହୋଇ ଯାଇଥିଲେ। ସେମାନେ କହୁଥିଲେ, “ଯୀଶୁ ସବୁକିଛି ସୁସ୍ଥ କରୁଛନ୍ତି, ଏପରିକି ସେ ବଧିରକୁ ଶ୍ରବଣ ଶକ୍ତି ଓ ମୂକକୁ ବାକ୍ ଶକ୍ତି ପ୍ରଦାନ କରୁଛନ୍ତି।”

上帝的律法与人的传统
7 一些法利赛人和从耶路撒冷来的犹太律法师围在耶稣的身边。 2 他们看到耶稣的门徒中有人不洗手就拿东西吃。 3 法利赛人和其他犹太人一样保持着祖先的传统。他们除非用特定的方式洗手，否则就不吃东西。 4 他们从集市上买回的食物，除非洗过，否则也不吃。他们还遵守许多其它的传统，比如洗杯子、水壶、铜罐等等。
5 因此，法利赛人和律法师们就问耶稣∶“您的门徒为什么不遵守我们祖先遗留下来的传统，用脏手拿东西吃呢？”
6 耶稣对他们说∶“以赛亚曾经预言说你们是些虚伪的人，这预言是准确的，正如所记载的那样：
‘这些人说他们尊敬我，
但实际上我对他们无关紧要。
7 他们对我的崇拜毫无价值，
因为他们教导的只是人定的规矩。’ (A)
8 你们把上帝的诫命抛在一边，而去追随人的教导。”
9 耶稣又对他们说∶“为了你们能遵守自己的传统，你们很会耍小聪明，拒绝上帝的诫命。 10 摩西说∶‘要孝敬父母’ [a]。他还说过∶‘侮辱父母的人必被处死。’ [b] 11 但是你们却教导人说他们可以对父母说，‘我有一些可用来帮助你们的东西，但是我不用它帮助你们，我要把它献给上帝。’ 12 你们这是在告诉他们不必为父母做任何事了。 13 所以，你们在教执行上帝的话并不重要，你们认为更重要的是保持你们传播的传统，你们做了许多类似的事情。”
14 耶稣又把人们叫到身边，对他们说∶“每个人都要听我的话，而且还要理解我的话， 15 从外界进入一个人体内的事物不能玷污他，但是来自他内在的事物却会玷污他。 16 [c]
17 然后耶稣离开人群，进了屋子。他的门徒们问他这个寓言是什么意思。 18 耶稣对他们说∶“为什么你们也不理解呢？难道你们不知道吗？从外界进入一个人体内的事物不能玷污一个人， 19 因为它进入不了人的内心，它只不过进到他的肚子里，然后又会排泻出去。”（耶稣这么说，意思为所有食物都干净的。）
20 耶稣又说∶“玷污人的事物是来自内心的。 21 因为从内在，一个人发自内心的邪念，不道德的性行为，偷窃、谋杀、 22 通奸、贪婪、邪恶、欺诈、下流、嫉妒、诽谤、自大和愚蠢。 23 所有这些邪恶的事物都来自于内在，它们会玷污人。”
帮助非犹太女子
24 耶稣离开那里，到推罗附近的地区去了。他走进一座房子，本不想让人知道，可是却瞒不住人。 25 一个女子听说耶稣在那里，她的女儿被邪灵附体。她来见耶稣，跪在他脚边。 26 这个女子不是犹太人，生在叙利亚的腓尼基。她恳求耶稣把她女儿身上的鬼赶走。
27 耶稣对她说∶“应该首先让孩子们吃饱，因为不该把孩子的面包拿去喂狗。”
28 女子回答说∶“先生，即便是饭桌下的狗也能吃孩子剩下的残渣剩饭呀。”
29 耶稣说∶“因为你这么讲，你回家去吧。鬼已离开了你的女儿。”
30 女子回到家，看见女儿躺在床上，鬼已经离开她了。
治好聋人
31 耶稣从推罗地区回来，穿过西顿，经过低加波利，来到加利利湖。 32 当地人带着一个又聋又哑的人来见耶稣，求他把手放在聋子的身上。 33 耶稣带着聋子离开人群，把手指伸到他的耳朵里，又吐了点唾沫，摸摸他的舌头， 34 然后仰望天空，长叹一声，说∶“以法大 [d]！” 35 聋子的耳朵顿时能听见了，舌头也变得灵活了，讲话也清楚了。
36 耶稣叮嘱人们不要把这事告诉别人。可是他越嘱咐，大家越是讲得起劲。 37 他们都非常惊讶，说∶“耶稣什么事都做得到。他竟然能让聋子听见，让哑巴说话。”

Commandments and Traditions
7 The Pharisees and some of the experts in the law came from Jerusalem and gathered around Jesus. 2 They saw some of his disciples eating bread with unclean (that is, unwashed) hands. 3 In fact, the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they scrub their hands with a fist,[a] holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash.[b] And there are many other traditions they adhere to, such as the washing[c] of cups, pitchers, kettles, and dining couches.[d] 5 The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked Jesus, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders? Instead they eat bread with unclean hands.”
6 He answered them, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites. As it is written:
These people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
7 They worship me in vain, teaching human rules as if they
were doctrines.[e]
8 “You abandon God’s commandment but hold to human tradition like the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things.”[f] 9 He continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside God’s commandment to keep[g] your own tradition. 10 For example, Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’[h] and ‘Whoever speaks evil of his father or mother must be put to death.’[i] 11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or mother, “Whatever help you might have received from me is corban”’[j] (which means an offering), 12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. 13 So you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. You do many things like that.”
14 He called the crowd to him again and said, “Everyone, listen to me and understand. 15 There is nothing outside of a man that can make him unclean by going into him. But the things that come out of a man are what make a man unclean. 16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”[k]
17 After he had left the crowd and entered a house, his disciples asked him about this illustration. 18 He said, “Are you lacking in understanding too? Do you not understand that whatever goes into a man from the outside cannot make him unclean? 19 For it does not enter his heart but goes into his stomach and goes out of him into the latrine—in this way all foods are purified.”[l]
20 He continued, “What comes out of a man, that is what makes a man unclean. 21 In fact, from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual sins, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, unrestrained immorality, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness. 23 All these evil things proceed from within and make a person unclean.”
The Faith of a Gentile Woman
24 Jesus got up and went from there to the region of Tyre and Sidon. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it, but he could not remain hidden. 25 Instead, when a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him, she immediately came and fell down at his feet. 26 This woman was a Greek, of Syro-Phoenician origin. She asked him to drive the demon out of her daughter.
27 Jesus said to her, “Let the children be fed first, because it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to their little dogs.”
28 “Lord,” she answered, “their little dogs under the table also eat some of the children’s crumbs.”
29 Then he said to her, “Because of this statement, go! The demon has gone out of your daughter.”
30 She went home, found the child lying on the bed and the demon gone.
31 Jesus left the region of Tyre again and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, within the region of the Decapolis.
“Ephphatha! Be Opened!”
32 They brought a man to him who was deaf and had a speech impediment. They pleaded with Jesus to place his hand on him. 33 Jesus took him aside in private, away from the crowd. He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. 34 After he looked up to heaven, he sighed and said, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”) 35 Immediately the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was set free, and he began to speak plainly. 36 Jesus gave the people strict orders to tell no one, but the more he did so, the more they kept proclaiming it. 37 They were amazed beyond measure and said, “He has done everything well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!”
