6 耶稣离开那里，来到自己的家乡，门徒也跟从他。 2 到了安息日，他在会堂里教训人。众人听见就甚稀奇，说：“这人从哪里有这些事呢？所赐给他的是什么智慧？他手所做的是何等的异能呢？ 3 这不是那木匠吗？不是马利亚的儿子雅各、约西、犹大、西门的长兄吗？他妹妹们不也是在我们这里吗？”他们就厌弃他[a]。 4 耶稣对他们说：“大凡先知，除了本地、亲属、本家之外，没有不被人尊敬的。” 5 耶稣就在那里不得行什么异能，不过按手在几个病人身上，治好他们。 6 他也诧异他们不信，就往周围乡村教训人去了。

45 耶稣随即催门徒上船，先渡到那边伯赛大去，等他叫众人散开。 46 他既辞别了他们，就往山上去祷告。 47 到了晚上，船在海中，耶稣独自在岸上， 48 看见门徒因风不顺摇橹甚苦。夜里约有四更天，就在海面上走，往他们那里去，意思要走过他们去。 49 但门徒看见他在海面上走，以为是鬼怪，就喊叫起来， 50 因为他们都看见了他，且甚惊慌。耶稣连忙对他们说：“你们放心！是我，不要怕！” 51 于是到他们那里，上了船，风就住了。他们心里十分惊奇， 52 这是因为他们不明白那分饼的事，心里还是愚顽。

Jesus in his hometown
6 Jesus left that place and came to his hometown. His disciples followed him. 2 On the Sabbath, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were surprised. “Where did this man get all this? What’s this wisdom he’s been given? What about the powerful acts accomplished through him? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t he Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” They were repulsed by him and fell into sin.
4 Jesus said to them, “Prophets are honored everywhere except in their own hometowns, among their relatives, and in their own households.” 5 He was unable to do any miracles there, except that he placed his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 He was appalled by their disbelief.
Sending out the disciples
Then Jesus traveled through the surrounding villages teaching.
7 He called for the Twelve and sent them out in pairs. He gave them authority over unclean spirits. 8 He instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a walking stick—no bread, no bags, and no money in their belts. 9 He told them to wear sandals but not to put on two shirts. 10 He said, “Whatever house you enter, remain there until you leave that place. 11 If a place doesn’t welcome you or listen to you, as you leave, shake the dust off your feet as a witness against them.” 12 So they went out and proclaimed that people should change their hearts and lives. 13 They cast out many demons, and they anointed many sick people with olive oil and healed them.
Death of John the Baptist
14 Herod the king heard about these things, because the name of Jesus had become well-known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and this is why miraculous powers are at work through him.” 15 Others were saying, “He is Elijah.” Still others were saying, “He is a prophet like one of the ancient prophets.” 16 But when Herod heard these rumors, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised to life.”
17 He said this because Herod himself had arranged to have John arrested and put in prison because of Herodias, the wife of Herod’s brother Philip. Herod had married her, 18 but John told Herod, “It’s against the law for you to marry your brother’s wife!” 19 So Herodias had it in for John. She wanted to kill him, but she couldn’t. 20 This was because Herod respected John. He regarded him as a righteous and holy person, so he protected him. John’s words greatly confused Herod, yet he enjoyed listening to him.
21 Finally, the time was right. It was on one of Herod’s birthdays, when he had prepared a feast for his high-ranking officials and military officers and Galilee’s leading residents. 22 Herod’s daughter Herodias[a] came in and danced, thrilling Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the young woman, “Ask me whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” 23 Then he swore to her, “Whatever you ask I will give to you, even as much as half of my kingdom.”
24 She left the banquet hall and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?”
“John the Baptist’s head,” Herodias replied.
25 Hurrying back to the ruler, she made her request: “I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head on a plate, right this minute.” 26 Although the king was upset, because of his solemn pledge and his guests, he didn’t want to refuse her. 27 So he ordered a guard to bring John’s head. The guard went to the prison, cut off John’s head, 28 brought his head on a plate, and gave it to the young woman, and she gave it to her mother. 29 When John’s disciples heard what had happened, they came and took his dead body and laid it in a tomb.
Jesus feeds five thousand people
30 The apostles returned to Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught. 31 Many people were coming and going, so there was no time to eat. He said to the apostles, “Come by yourselves to a secluded place and rest for a while.” 32 They departed in a boat by themselves for a deserted place.
33 Many people saw them leaving and recognized them, so they ran ahead from all the cities and arrived before them. 34 When Jesus arrived and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then he began to teach them many things.
35 Late in the day, his disciples came to him and said, “This is an isolated place, and it’s already late in the day. 36 Send them away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy something to eat for themselves.”
37 He replied, “You give them something to eat.”
But they said to him, “Should we go off and buy bread worth almost eight months’ pay[b] and give it to them to eat?”
38 He said to them, “How much bread do you have? Take a look.”
After checking, they said, “Five loaves of bread and two fish.”
39 He directed the disciples to seat all the people in groups as though they were having a banquet on the green grass. 40 They sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 He took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, blessed them, broke the loaves into pieces, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 Everyone ate until they were full. 43 They filled twelve baskets with the leftover pieces of bread and fish. 44 About five thousand had eaten.
Jesus walks on water
45 Right then, Jesus made his disciples get into a boat and go ahead to the other side of the lake, toward Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After saying good-bye to them, Jesus went up onto a mountain to pray. 47 Evening came and the boat was in the middle of the lake, but he was alone on the land. 48 He saw his disciples struggling. They were trying to row forward, but the wind was blowing against them. Very early in the morning, he came to them, walking on the lake. He intended to pass by them. 49 When they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost and they screamed. 50 Seeing him was terrifying to all of them. Just then he spoke to them, “Be encouraged! It’s me. Don’t be afraid.” 51 He got into the boat, and the wind settled down. His disciples were so baffled they were beside themselves. 52 That’s because they hadn’t understood about the loaves. Their minds had been closed so that they resisted God’s ways.
Healings at Gennesaret
53 When Jesus and his disciples had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret, anchored the boat, 54 and came ashore. People immediately recognized Jesus 55 and ran around that whole region bringing sick people on their mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 Wherever he went—villages, cities, or farming communities—they would place the sick in the marketplaces and beg him to allow them to touch even the hem of his clothing. Everyone who touched him was healed.

Jesus Visits His Own Town, Nazareth (A)
6 Jesus went from the house of Jairus and came to His home town. His followers came after Him. 2 On the Day of Rest He began to teach in the Jewish place of worship. Many people heard Him. They were surprised and wondered, saying, “Where did this Man get all this? What wisdom is this that has been given to Him? How can He do these powerful works with His hands? 3 Is He not a Man Who makes things from wood? Is He not the Son of Mary and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Do not His sisters live here with us?” The people were ashamed of Him and turned away from Him. 4 Jesus said to them, “One who speaks for God is respected everywhere but in his own country and among his own family and in his own house.”
5 So Jesus could do no powerful works there. But He did put His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 He wondered because they had no faith. But He went around to the towns and taught as He went.
Jesus Calls Twelve Followers and Sends Them Out (B)
7 Jesus called the twelve followers to Him and began to send them out two by two. He gave them power over demons. 8 He told them to take nothing along with them but a walking stick. They were not to take a bag or food or money in their belts. 9 They were to wear shoes. They were not to take two coats.
10 He said to them, “Whatever house you go into, stay there until you leave that town. 11 Whoever does not take you in or listen to you, when you leave there, shake the dust off your feet. By doing that, you will speak against them. For sure, I tell you, it will be easier for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day men stand before God and are judged than for that city.”
12 Then they left. They preached that men should be sorry for their sins and turn from them. 13 They put out many demons. They poured oil on many people that were sick and healed them.
John the Baptist Is Put in Prison (C)
14 King Herod heard about Jesus because everyone was talking about Him. Some people said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why he is doing such powerful works.” 15 Other people said, “He is Elijah.” Others said, “He is one who speaks for God like one of the early preachers.” 16 When Herod heard this, he said, “It is John the Baptist, whose head I cut off. He has been raised from the dead.” 17 For Herod had sent men to take John and put him into prison. He did this because of his wife, Herodias. She had been the wife of his brother Philip. 18 John the Baptist had said to Herod, “It is wrong for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 Herodias became angry with him. She wanted to have John the Baptist killed but she could not. 20 Herod was afraid of John. He knew he was a good man and right with God, and he kept John from being hurt or killed. He liked to listen to John preach. But when he did, he became troubled.
John the Baptist Is Killed (D)
21 Then Herodias found a way to have John killed. Herod gave a big supper on his birthday. He asked the leaders of the country and army captains and the leaders of Galilee to come. 22 The daughter of Herodias came in and danced before them. This made Herod and his friends happy. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.” 23 Then he made a promise to her, “Whatever you ask for, I will give it to you. I will give you even half of my nation.” 24 She went to her mother and asked, “What should I ask for?” The mother answered, “I want the head of John the Baptist.” 25 At once the girl went to Herod. She said, “I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a plate now.”
26 Herod was very sorry. He had to do it because of his promise and because of those who ate with him. 27 At once he sent one of his soldiers and told him to bring the head of John the Baptist. The soldier went to the prison and cut off John’s head. 28 He took John’s head in on a plate and gave it to the girl. The girl gave it to her mother. 29 John’s followers heard this. They went and took his body and buried it.
The Feeding of the Five Thousand (E)
30 The followers of Jesus came back to Him. They told Jesus all they had done and taught. 31 He said to them, “Come away from the people. Be by yourselves and rest.” There were many people coming and going. They had had no time even to eat. 32 They went by themselves in a boat to a desert. 33 Many people saw them leave and knew who they were. People ran fast from all the cities and got there first. 34 When Jesus got out of the boat, He saw many people gathered together. He had loving-pity for them. They were like sheep without a shepherd. He began to teach them many things.
35 The day was almost gone. The followers of Jesus came to Him. They said, “This is a desert. It is getting late. 36 Tell the people to go to the towns and villages and buy food for themselves.” 37 He said to them, “Give them something to eat.” They said to Him, “Are we to go and buy many loaves of bread and give it to them?” 38 He said to them, “How many loaves of bread do you have here? Go and see.” When they knew, they said, “Five loaves of bread and two fish.” 39 Then He told them to have all the people sit down together in groups on the green grass. 40 They sat down in groups of fifty people and in groups of one hundred people. 41 Jesus took the five loaves of bread and two fish. He looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He broke the loaves in pieces and gave them to the followers to set before the people. He divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were filled. 43 After that the followers picked up twelve baskets full of pieces of bread and fish. 44 About five thousand men ate the bread.
Jesus Walks On The Water (F)
45 At once Jesus had His followers get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to the town of Bethsaida. He sent the people away. 46 When they were all gone, He went up to the mountain to pray. 47 It was evening. The boat was half-way across the sea. Jesus was alone on the land. 48 He saw His followers were in trouble. The wind was against them. They were working very hard rowing the boat. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came to them walking on the sea. He would have gone past them. 49 When the followers saw Him walking on the water, they thought it was a spirit and cried out with fear. 50 For they all saw Him and were afraid. At once Jesus talked to them. He said, “Take hope. It is I, do not be afraid.” 51 He came over to them and got into the boat. The wind stopped. They were very much surprised and wondered about it. 52 They had not learned what they should have learned from the loaves because their hearts were hard.
People Are Healed at Gennesaret (G)
53 Then they crossed the sea and came to the land of Gennesaret and went to shore. 54 When Jesus got out of the boat, the people knew Him at once. 55 They ran through all the country bringing people who were sick on their beds to Jesus. 56 Wherever He went, they would lay the sick people in the streets in the center of town where people gather. They begged Him that they might touch the bottom of His coat. Everyone who did was healed. This happened in the towns and in the cities and in the country where He went.

14 Nabalitaan(H) ito ni Haring Herodes, sapagkat ang pangalan ni Jesus ay naging tanyag. Sinasabi ng iba, “Si Juan na Tagapagbautismo ay muling nabuhay mula sa mga patay at dahil dito, gumagawa ang mga kapangyarihang ito sa kanya.”
15 Ngunit sinasabi ng iba, “Siya'y si Elias.” At sinasabi naman ng iba, “Siya'y propeta, na tulad ng isa sa mga propeta noong una.”
16 Ngunit nang marinig ito ni Herodes ay sinabi niya, “Si Juan na aking pinugutan ng ulo ay muling nabuhay.”
17 Sapagkat(I) si Herodes mismo ang nagsugo sa mga kawal na dumakip kay Juan, at nagpagapos sa kanya sa bilangguan dahil kay Herodias, na asawa ni Felipe na kanyang kapatid; sapagkat pinakasalan siya ni Herodes.
18 Sapagkat sinasabi ni Juan kay Herodes, “Hindi ipinahihintulot sa iyo na angkinin mo ang asawa ng iyong kapatid.”
19 Kaya't si Herodias ay nagtanim ng galit sa kanya at hinangad siyang patayin ngunit hindi niya magawa,
20 sapagkat natatakot si Herodes kay Juan. Nalalaman niyang si Juan[a] ay isang lalaking matuwid at banal at siya'y ipinagtanggol niya. Nang kanyang mapakinggan siya, labis siyang nabagabag gayunma'y masaya siyang nakinig sa kanya.
21 Ngunit dumating ang isang pagkakataon na si Herodes sa kanyang kaarawan ay nagbigay ng isang salu-salo para sa kanyang mga mahistrado, mga pinuno ng hukbo at mga pangunahing tao sa Galilea.
22 Nang pumasok ang anak na babae ni Herodias at sumayaw, siya'y nagustuhan ni Herodes at ng kanyang mga panauhin. Sinabi ng hari sa dalaga, “Hingin mo sa akin ang maibigan mo at ibibigay ko sa iyo.”
23 At sumumpa siya sa kanya, “Ang anumang hingin mo sa akin ay ibibigay ko sa iyo, kahit na ang kalahati ng aking kaharian.”
24 Lumabas siya at sinabi sa kanyang ina, “Ano ang aking hihingin?” At sinabi niya, “Ang ulo ni Juan na Tagapagbautismo.”
25 At nagmamadali siyang pumasok sa kinaroroonan ng hari at humiling na sinasabi, “Ibig kong ibigay mo sa akin ngayon din ang ulo ni Juan na Tagapagbautismo na nasa isang pinggan.”
26 At lubhang nalungkot ang hari, ngunit dahil sa kanyang pangako at sa kanyang mga panauhin, ayaw niyang tumanggi sa kanya.
27 Agad na isinugo ng hari ang isang kawal na bantay at ipinag-utos na dalhin sa kanya ang ulo ni Juan.[b] Umalis nga ang kawal[c] at pinugutan niya ng ulo si Juan sa bilangguan.
28 At dinala ang ulo ni Juan na nasa isang pinggan at ibinigay ito sa dalaga at ibinigay naman ito ng dalaga sa kanyang ina.
29 Nang mabalitaan ito ng kanyang mga alagad, pumaroon sila at kinuha ang kanyang bangkay at inilagay sa isang libingan.

30 Ang mga apostol ay nagtipon sa harap ni Jesus at ibinalita nila sa kanya ang lahat ng kanilang ginawa at itinuro.
31 At sinabi niya sa kanila, “Pumunta kayo ng bukod sa isang dakong ilang at magpahinga kayo nang sandali.” Sapagkat marami ang nagpaparoo't parito at sila'y hindi man lamang nagkaroon ng panahong kumain.
32 Umalis nga silang bukod, sakay ng isang bangka patungo sa isang dakong ilang.
33 Ngunit maraming nakakita sa kanilang pag-alis at sila'y nakilala. Kaya't tumakbo sila mula sa lahat ng mga bayan at nauna pang dumating sa kanila.
34 Pagbaba(K) niya sa pampang nakita niya ang napakaraming tao at nahabag siya sa kanila, sapagkat sila'y tulad sa mga tupa na walang pastol. At sila'y sinimulan niyang turuan ng maraming bagay.
35 Nang gumagabi na, lumapit sa kanya ang kanyang mga alagad at nagsabi, “Ito ay isang ilang na dako at gumagabi na.
36 Paalisin mo na sila upang makapunta sa mga bukid at mga nayon sa paligid at makabili sila ng anumang makakain.”
37 Ngunit sumagot siya sa kanila, “Bigyan ninyo sila ng makakain.” At sinabi nila sa kanya, “Aalis ba kami upang bumili ng dalawang daang denariong tinapay at ipapakain namin sa kanila?”
38 At sinabi niya sa kanila, “Ilang tinapay mayroon kayo? Humayo kayo at inyong tingnan.” Nang malaman nila ay kanilang sinabi, “Lima, at dalawang isda.”
39 Pagkatapos ay iniutos niya sa kanila na paupuin silang lahat nang pangkat-pangkat sa luntiang damo.
40 Kaya't umupo sila nang pangkat-pangkat, nang tig-iisandaan at tiglilimampu.
41 Kinuha niya ang limang tinapay at ang dalawang isda, tumingala siya sa langit, pinagpala at pinagputul-putol ang mga tinapay at ibinigay niya sa mga alagad upang ipamahagi sa mga tao. At ipinamahagi niya sa kanilang lahat ang dalawang isda.
42 Kumain silang lahat at nabusog.
43 Kanilang pinulot ang labindalawang kaing na punô ng pira-pirasong tinapay at mga isda.
44 Ang mga kumain ng mga tinapay ay limang libong lalaki.
Lumakad si Jesus sa Ibabaw ng Tubig(L)
45 Agad niyang pinasakay sa bangka ang kanyang mga alagad at pinauna sa kanya sa kabilang ibayo, sa Bethsaida, hanggang sa mapauwi na niya ang maraming tao.
46 Pagkatapos na makapagpaalam siya sa kanila, umakyat siya sa bundok upang manalangin.
47 Nang sumapit ang gabi, ang bangka ay nasa gitna ng dagat at siya'y nag-iisa sa lupa.
48 Pagkakita sa kanila na sila'y nahihirapan sa pagsagwan, sapagkat salungat sa kanila ang hangin, nang malapit na ang madaling araw,[d] lumapit siya sa kanila na lumalakad sa ibabaw ng dagat. Balak niyang lampasan sila,
49 ngunit nang makita nilang siya'y lumalakad sa ibabaw ng dagat, inakala nilang iyon ay isang multo at sila'y sumigaw;
50 sapagkat siya ay nakita nilang lahat at sila'y nasindak. Ngunit agad siyang nagsalita sa kanila at sinabi, “Lakasan ninyo ang inyong loob. Ako ito; huwag kayong matakot.”
51 Sumakay siya sa bangka kasama nila at tumigil ang hangin. At sila'y lubhang nanggilalas,
52 sapagkat hindi nila nauunawaan ang tungkol sa mga tinapay, kundi tumigas ang kanilang mga puso.
Pinagaling ni Jesus ang mga Maysakit sa Genesaret(M)
53 Nang makatawid na sila, narating nila ang lupain ng Genesaret at dumaong doon.
54 At nang bumaba sila sa bangka, agad siyang nakilala ng mga tao.
55 Tumakbo sila sa palibot ng buong lupaing iyon at pinasimulan nilang dalhin ang mga maysakit na nasa kanilang higaan, saanman nila mabalitaan na naroon siya.
56 At saanman siya pumasok sa mga nayon, o sa mga lunsod o bukid inilalagay nila sa mga pamilihan ang mga maysakit, at pinapakiusapan siya na ipahipo man lamang sa kanila ang laylayan ng kanyang damit. At ang lahat ng humipo nito[e] ay pawang gumaling.
