Chúa Chữa Lành Người Bại(A)
2 Mấy ngày sau, Đức Giê-su trở lại thành Ca-pha-na-um. Nghe tin Ngài ở nhà, 2 dân chúng kéo về đông đảo đến nỗi ngoài cửa cũng không còn chỗ và Ngài dạy đạo cho họ. 3 Có bốn người khiêng một người bại liệt đến cho Ngài. 4 Vì quá đông họ không thể đến gần, nên dỡ mái nhà ngay trên chỗ Ngài, và khi đã dỡ được một lỗ trống họ dòng cái cáng đưa người bại liệt xuống. 5 Thấy đức tin của họ, Đức Giê-su bảo người bại: “Này con, tội lỗi con đã được tha.”
6 Mấy giáo sư Kinh Luật ngồi đó lý luận trong lòng: 7 “Tại sao ông này nói vậy? Phạm thượng quá! Ngoài Đức Chúa Trời không ai có quyền tha tội!”
8 Lập tức, tâm trí[a] Đức Giê-su nhận biết ngay họ đang lý luận thầm như vậy nên phán: “Tại sao các ông lý luận trong lòng như thế? 9 Bảo rằng: ‘Tội con đã được tha,’ hay là: ‘Hãy đứng dậy mang cáng con về đi,’ điều nào dễ hơn? 10 Nhưng để các ông biết trên thế gian Con Người có quyền tha tội, Ngài bảo kẻ bại liệt: 11 ‘Này con, hãy đứng dậy mang cáng con về nhà.’ ” 12 Người bại liệt liền đứng dậy mang cáng đi ra trước mắt mọi người đến nỗi ai nấy đều ngạc nhiên và tôn vinh Đức Chúa Trời: “Chúng ta chưa bao giờ thấy việc như thế này.”
Chúa Gọi Lê-vi(B)
13 Đức Giê-su lại đi ra dọc bờ biển, cả đám đông kéo đến với Ngài và Ngài dạy bảo họ. 14 Thế rồi, đang khi đi, Ngài thấy Lê-vi con An-phê ngồi tại trạm thu thuế, thì bảo: “Hãy theo Ta.” Người đứng dậy theo Ngài.
15 Sau đó Đức Giê-su ngồi ăn tại nhà Lê-vi, có nhiều người thu thuế và những kẻ bị coi là tội nhân cùng ngồi ăn với Ngài và môn đệ, vì nhiều người đã theo Ngài. 16 Các giáo sư Kinh Luật thuộc phái Pha-ri-si thấy Ngài ăn chung với những người thu thuế và những kẻ tội lỗi[b] nên nói với các môn đệ Ngài: “Tại sao ông ấy ăn uống chung với bọn thu thuế và kẻ tội lỗi?”
17 Khi nghe điều đó, Đức Giê-su đáp: “Không phải người mạnh khỏe cần thầy thuốc, mà là người đau ốm; Ta đến không phải để kêu gọi người công chính nhưng gọi kẻ tội lỗi.”
Vấn Đề Lệ Kiêng Ăn(C)
18 Đang khi các môn đệ của Giăng và những người Pha-ri-si vẫn giữ lệ kiêng ăn, có người đến hỏi Ngài: “Tại sao môn đệ của Giăng và môn đệ của người Pha-ri-si đều kiêng ăn, còn môn đệ của Thầy lại không?”
19 Đức Giê-su đáp: “Có thể nào các chàng phụ rể[c] kiêng ăn khi chàng rể còn ở với họ? Bao lâu chàng rể còn ở với họ, bấy lâu họ khỏi phải kiêng ăn. 20 Đến khi chàng rể đi rồi, lúc ấy họ mới kiêng.
21 Không ai vá miếng vải mới vào áo cũ, vì miếng vải mới sẽ chằng rách áo cũ, và chỗ rách sẽ càng tệ hơn. 22 Cũng không ai đổ rượu mới vào bầu da cũ, nếu vậy rượu sẽ làm nứt bầu, rượu chảy hết mà bầu cũng hỏng. Rượu mới phải đổ vào bầu da mới.”
Chúa Của Ngày Sa-bát(D)
23 Một ngày Sa-bát kia Đức Giê-su đi ngang qua cánh đồng lúa mì. Đang khi đi các môn đệ bắt đầu bứt vài bông lúa. 24 Mấy người Pha-ri-si nói với Ngài: “Kìa! Sao họ dám phạm luật trong ngày Sa-bát?”
25 Ngài đáp: “Các ông chưa bao giờ đọc đến chuyện vua Đa-vít đã làm trong khi vua và toán thuộc hạ lâm cảnh thiếu thốn và đói sao? 26 Thể nào, vào thời thầy thượng tế A-bi-tha, vua vào nhà thờ Đức Chúa Trời ăn bánh trưng bày trên bàn thờ,[d] là bánh không ai được phép ăn ngoài các thầy tế lễ, và lại còn phân phát cho những người theo mình nữa.”
27 Rồi Ngài bảo họ: “Ngày Sa-bát được thiết lập cho nhân loại chứ không phải nhân loại cho ngày Sa-bát. 28 Thế thì Con Người chính là Chúa của ngày Sa-bát.”

A Paraplegic
2 1-5 After a few days, Jesus returned to Capernaum, and word got around that he was back home. A crowd gathered, jamming the entrance so no one could get in or out. He was teaching the Word. They brought a paraplegic to him, carried by four men. When they weren’t able to get in because of the crowd, they removed part of the roof and lowered the paraplegic on his stretcher. Impressed by their bold belief, Jesus said to the paraplegic, “Son, I forgive your sins.”
6-7 Some religion scholars sitting there started whispering among themselves, “He can’t talk that way! That’s blasphemy! God and only God can forgive sins.”
8-12 Jesus knew right away what they were thinking, and said, “Why are you so skeptical? Which is simpler: to say to the paraplegic, ‘I forgive your sins,’ or say, ‘Get up, take your stretcher, and start walking’? Well, just so it’s clear that I’m the Son of Man and authorized to do either, or both . . .” (he looked now at the paraplegic), “Get up. Pick up your stretcher and go home.” And the man did it—got up, grabbed his stretcher, and walked out, with everyone there watching him. They rubbed their eyes, stunned—and then praised God, saying, “We’ve never seen anything like this!”
The Tax Collector
13-14 Then Jesus went again to walk alongside the lake. Again a crowd came to him, and he taught them. Strolling along, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus, at his work collecting taxes. Jesus said, “Come along with me.” He came.
15-16 Later Jesus and his disciples were at home having supper with a collection of disreputable guests. Unlikely as it seems, more than a few of them had become followers. The religion scholars and Pharisees saw him keeping this kind of company and lit into his disciples: “What kind of example is this, acting cozy with the misfits?”
17 Jesus, overhearing, shot back, “Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick? I’m here inviting the sin-sick, not the spiritually-fit.”
Feasting or Fasting?
18 The disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees made a practice of fasting. Some people confronted Jesus: “Why do the followers of John and the Pharisees take on the discipline of fasting, but your followers don’t?”
19-20 Jesus said, “When you’re celebrating a wedding, you don’t skimp on the cake and wine. You feast. Later you may need to pull in your belt, but not now. As long as the bride and groom are with you, you have a good time. No one throws cold water on a friendly bonfire. This is Kingdom Come!”
21-22 He went on, “No one cuts up a fine silk scarf to patch old work clothes; you want fabrics that match. And you don’t put your wine in cracked bottles.”
23-24 One Sabbath day he was walking through a field of ripe grain. As his disciples made a path, they pulled off heads of grain. The Pharisees told on them to Jesus: “Look, your disciples are breaking Sabbath rules!”
25-28 Jesus said, “Really? Haven’t you ever read what David did when he was hungry, along with those who were with him? How he entered the sanctuary and ate fresh bread off the altar, with the Chief Priest Abiathar right there watching—holy bread that no one but priests were allowed to eat—and handed it out to his companions?” Then Jesus said, “The Sabbath was made to serve us; we weren’t made to serve the Sabbath. The Son of Man is no yes-man to the Sabbath. He’s in charge!”

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(A)
2 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers(B) that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man,(C) carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”(D)
6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(E)
8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(F) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God,(G) saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”(H)
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(I)
13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him,(J) and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(K) Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees(L) saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(M)
17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(N)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(O)
18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting.(P) Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”
19 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them,(Q) and on that day they will fast.
21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(R)(S)
23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.(T) 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(U)
25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest,(V) he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat.(W) And he also gave some to his companions.”(X)
27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man,(Y) not man for the Sabbath.(Z) 28 So the Son of Man(AA) is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
