谋害耶稣
14 再过两天就是逾越节和除酵节，祭司长和律法教师正暗暗地找机会拘捕、杀害耶稣。
2 他们说：“我们不能在节期那天下手，以免在百姓中引起骚乱。”
耶稣受膏
3 耶稣在伯大尼村患过麻风病的西门家里吃饭，有个女人带了一瓶极贵重的纯哪哒香膏进来，把玉瓶打破，将香膏倒在耶稣头上。 4 有些人生气地彼此议论说：“为什么这样浪费？ 5 这瓶香膏可以卖三百多个银币[a]来周济穷人。”他们就责备那女人。
6 耶稣说：“随她吧！何必为难她呢？她在我身上做的是一件美事。 7 因为你们身边总会有穷人，你们随时都可以帮助他们，可是你们身边不会总有我。 8 她做了自己能做的。她是为我的安葬做准备，提前用香膏抹了我的身体。 9 我实在告诉你们，无论福音传到世界哪个角落，人们都会传扬这女人的事迹，纪念她。”
犹大出卖耶稣
10 十二门徒当中的加略人犹大去见祭司长，要把耶稣出卖给他们。 11 他们听了喜出望外，答应给他酬金。于是犹大伺机出卖耶稣。
最后的晚餐
12 除酵节的第一天，就是宰杀逾越节羔羊的那天，门徒问耶稣：“我们该到什么地方为你准备逾越节的晚餐呢？”
13 耶稣就派了两个门徒，并嘱咐他们：“你们进城会看到一个人带着一瓶水迎面而来，你们就跟着他。 14 他进哪一家，你们也跟着进去，对那家的主人说，‘我们的老师问你，祂的客房在哪里，祂要和门徒在里面吃逾越节的晚餐。’ 15 主人会带你们到楼上一间布置整齐的大房间，你们就在那里准备吧。”
16 两个门徒出去，进了城，所遇见的果然和耶稣所说的一样。他们预备了逾越节的晚餐。
17 傍晚时分，耶稣带着十二门徒来了。 18 用餐的时候，耶稣说：“我实在告诉你们，你们中间有一个人要出卖我，他现在正和我同桌吃饭。”
19 他们听了都感到不安，一个一个地问耶稣：“不是我吧？” 20 耶稣说：“是你们十二个人中的一个，他现在正和我一起在盘子里蘸饼吃。 21 人子一定会受害，正如圣经的记载，但出卖人子的人有祸了，他还不如不生在这世上！”
22 他们吃的时候，耶稣拿起饼来，祝谢后，便掰开，分给门徒，说：“拿去吃吧！这是我的身体。” 23 接着又拿起杯来，祝谢后，递给他们，他们都喝了。 24 耶稣说：“这是我为万人所流的立约之血。 25 我实在告诉你们，从今天起，一直到我在上帝的国喝新酒的那天之前，我不会再喝这葡萄酒。”
26 他们唱完诗歌，就出门去了橄榄山。
预言彼得不认主
27 耶稣对他们说：“你们都要背弃我，因为圣经上说，
“‘我要击打牧人，
羊群将四散。’
28 但我复活后，要先你们一步去加利利。”
29 彼得说：“即使所有人都背弃你，我也决不会背弃你！”
30 耶稣说：“我实在告诉你，就在今天晚上鸡叫两次以前，你会三次不认我。”
31 彼得郑重地说：“就算要我跟你一起死，我也不会不认你。”其他门徒也都这样说。
客西马尼园的祷告
32 他们到了客西马尼园，耶稣对门徒说：“你们坐在这里，我要去祷告。”
33 于是耶稣带着彼得、雅各和约翰向前走。祂觉得极其难过，非常伤痛， 34 说：“我心里非常忧伤，几乎要死，你们留在这里警醒。” 35 耶稣往前走了不远，俯伏在地祷告，如果可以，不要让那时刻临到祂。
36 祂说：“阿爸，父啊，你无所不能，求你撤去此杯。然而，愿你的旨意成就，而非我的意愿。”
37 祂回来，见他们都睡着了，就对彼得说：“西门，你在睡觉吗？你不能警醒一时吗？ 38 你们要警醒祷告，免得陷入诱惑。你们的心灵虽然愿意，肉体却很软弱。”
39 耶稣又去祷告，所祈求的跟上次一样。 40 祂回来时见他们又睡着了，因为他们困得眼皮发沉，也不知道对祂说什么。 41 祂第三次祷告回来后，对他们说：“你们还在睡觉休息吗？够了，时候到了，看啊，人子要被出卖、交在罪人的手里了。 42 起来，我们走吧。看啊，出卖我的人已经来了！”
耶稣被捕
43 耶稣还在说话的时候，十二门徒之一的犹大已带了一群人拿着刀棍迎面而来。他们奉了祭司长、律法教师和长老之命来捉拿耶稣。 44 出卖耶稣的犹大预先和他们定了暗号，说：“我亲吻谁，谁就是耶稣，你们把祂抓起来，小心押走。”
45 犹大随即走到耶稣跟前说：“老师。”然后就亲吻耶稣。 46 其他人就下手捉拿耶稣。 47 站在旁边的一个门徒拔出刀朝大祭司的奴仆砍去，削掉了他一只耳朵。
48 耶稣问那群人：“你们像对付强盗一样拿着刀棍来抓我吗？ 49 我天天和你们在一起，在圣殿里教导人，你们没有来抓我。你们现在这样做是要应验圣经的话。”
50 那时，门徒都撇下耶稣，各自逃命去了。 51 只有一个身上披着一块麻布的青年跟着耶稣。他们上去捉他， 52 他丢了那块麻布，赤身逃走了。
大祭司审问耶稣
53 他们把耶稣押到大祭司那里，众祭司长、长老和律法教师都来了。 54 那时彼得远远地跟着耶稣，一直来到大祭司的院子，与卫兵们坐在一起烤火。 55 祭司长和全公会的人正在寻找证据控告耶稣，要定祂死罪，只是找不到。 56 不少人作伪证控告祂，他们的证词却不一致。 57 后来，有几个人站起来作伪证说： 58 “我们听见祂说，‘我要拆毁这座人手建造的圣殿，三天内不靠人力另造一座。’” 59 即使这样，他们的证词也不一致。
60 最后，大祭司在众人面前站起来质问耶稣：“你不回答吗？这些人作证控告你的是什么呢？”
61 耶稣还是沉默不语，什么也不答。大祭司又问祂：“你是那当受称颂者的儿子基督吗？” 62 耶稣说：“我是！将来你们要看见人子坐在全能上帝的右边，驾着天上的云降临。”
63 大祭司便撕裂衣服，说：“我们还需要什么证人呢？ 64 你们听见祂说亵渎的话了，你们看怎么办？”他们都判祂死罪。
65 有几个人向祂吐唾沫，蒙上祂的眼睛，挥拳打祂，嘲笑祂说：“你说预言吧！”卫兵押祂下去时，也打祂。
彼得三次不认耶稣
66 那时，彼得仍在院子里，大祭司的一个婢女走过来， 67 见彼得在烤火，打量了他一番，说：“你也是那个拿撒勒人耶稣的同伙。”
68 “我不知道也不明白你在说什么！”彼得一边否认，一边躲到外院去。那时，鸡叫了。
69 一会儿，那婢女又看见彼得，就对旁边的人说：“他是跟他们一伙的！” 70 彼得又加以否认。
再过了一会儿，旁观的人也指着彼得说：“你一定是跟他们一伙的，因为你也是加利利人！”
71 彼得又赌咒又发誓，说：“我根本不认识你们说的这个人。” 72 就在这时候，鸡又叫了。彼得突然想起耶稣曾对他说：“在鸡叫两次以前，你会三次不认我”，忍不住痛哭起来。

Het laatste Paasmaal
14 Het was twee dagen voor Pesach, het Joodse Paasfeest. Tijdens dat feest eten de Joden alleen brood dat zonder gist gebakken is. De leidende priesters en de bijbelgeleerden zochten nog steeds een goede gelegenheid om Jezus gevangen te nemen en te doden. 2 ‘Maar niet met Pesach,’ zeiden zij, ‘want dan komt het volk vast in opstand.’ 3 Jezus was in Bethanië, in het huis van Simon de melaatse. Tijdens het eten kwam er een vrouw binnen. Ze had een flesje echte, dure nardusolie bij zich. Zij brak de hals eraf en goot de olie over het hoofd van Jezus uit. 4 Sommige van zijn tafelgenoten ergerden zich hieraan en mopperden: ‘Wat een verspilling! 5 Zij had die olie voor veel geld kunnen verkopen en dat aan de armen kunnen geven.’ Zij vonden het schandalig wat zij gedaan had. 6 Jezus zei tegen hen: ‘Laat haar toch begaan! Waarom valt u haar lastig? Wat zij voor Mij deed was juist heel goed. 7 Arme mensen zijn er altijd en u kunt hen helpen wanneer u maar wilt. Maar Ik zal niet lang meer bij u blijven. 8 Zij gaf wat ze had. Zij heeft de nardusolie voor mijn begrafenis nu al over Mij uitgegoten. 9 Ik wil u wel zeggen dat zij niet zal worden vergeten, want overal ter wereld waar over het goede nieuws van God wordt gesproken, zal ook verteld worden wat zij gedaan heeft.’
10 Judas Iskariot, een van de groep van twaalf, ging naar de leidende priesters. Hij wilde er wel aan meewerken om Jezus gevangen te nemen. 11 Toen zij dat hoorden, waren ze blij verrast en beloofden hem geld. Judas wachtte zijn kans af om Jezus uit te leveren.
12 Op de eerste dag van Pesach, het Joodse Paasfeest, werd het Paaslam geslacht. De leerlingen vroegen aan Jezus: ‘Waar wilt U het Paasmaal eten? Dan kunnen wij het vast gaan klaarmaken.’ 13 Hij stuurde twee van hen erop uit. ‘Ga naar de stad,’ zei Hij. ‘Onderweg zullen jullie een man tegenkomen die een waterkruik draagt. 14 Volg hem, kijk waar hij naar binnen gaat en vraag of jullie de eigenaar van het huis mogen spreken. Zeg tegen hem dat Ik jullie heb gestuurd en vraag in welke kamer van zijn huis wij vanavond het Paasmaal kunnen eten. 15 Hij zal jullie mee naar boven nemen naar een grote kamer, waar alles staat wat we nodig hebben. Maak daar het Paasmaal voor ons klaar.’ 16 De twee leerlingen gingen naar de stad, vonden alles precies zoals Jezus gezegd had en begonnen een en ander voor de maaltijd in orde te maken.
17 ʼs Avonds kwam Jezus met de groep van twaalf. 18 Onder het eten zei Hij: ‘Een van jullie zal Mij verraden, een die samen met Mij eet.’ 19 Dat was een slag voor hen. Verdrietig vroegen zij een voor een: ‘Ik toch niet?’ 20 Maar Hij antwoordde: ‘Het is een van jullie twaalf. Een die samen met Mij zijn brood in de kom doopt. 21 Ik, de Mensenzoon, zal sterven zoals door de profeten is voorspeld. Maar het ziet er slecht uit voor de man die de Mensenzoon verraadt. Het zou beter voor hem zijn als hij niet geboren was!’ 22 Jezus nam een brood, dankte God ervoor, brak het in stukken en gaf het aan zijn leerlingen. ‘Neem dit,’ zei Hij, ‘dit is mijn lichaam.’ 23 Daarna nam Hij een beker wijn, dankte God ervoor en gaf hem aan zijn leerlingen. Zij dronken er allemaal uit. 24 ‘Dit is mijn bloed, dat voor vele mensen zal vloeien,’ zei Hij. ‘Het bezegelt het nieuwe verbond tussen God en de mens. 25 Wat de wijn betreft, die zal Ik niet meer drinken tot de dag dat Ik de nieuwe wijn zal drinken in het Koninkrijk van God.’
26 Tot slot zongen zij een lied tot eer van God en gingen daarna naar de Olijfberg. 27 ‘Jullie zullen je allemaal voor Mij schamen,’ zei Jezus. ‘Want in de Boeken staat: “Ik zal de herder doden en de schapen zullen uiteengejaagd worden.” 28 Maar als Ik uit de dood ben teruggekomen, zal Ik naar Galilea gaan en jullie daar ontmoeten.’ 29 Petrus zei tegen Hem: ‘Zelfs al zouden alle mensen zich voor U schamen, ik nooit!’ 30 ‘Petrus,’ zei Jezus. ‘Ik verzeker je dat jij vannacht drie keer zult zeggen dat je Mij niet kent, nog voor de haan twee keer heeft gekraaid.’ 31 ‘Zeggen dat ik U niet ken?’ viel Petrus uit. ‘Dat nooit! Al moest ik met U sterven!’ Ook de anderen zeiden dat zij dat nooit zouden doen.
De arrestatie van Jezus
32 Zij kwamen bij Gethsemané, een tuin op de helling van de Olijfberg. ‘Ga hier zitten,’ zei Jezus tegen zijn leerlingen. ‘Ik ga iets verderop bidden.’ 33 Hij nam alleen Petrus, Jakobus en Johannes mee. Jezus begon bang te worden en kreeg het heel erg moeilijk. 34 ‘Het wordt Mij teveel,’ zei Hij. ‘Ik sterf bijna van verdriet. Blijf hier waken.’ 35 Hij liep een stukje verder en liet Zich vallen. Hij vroeg God of het mogelijk was dat Hij al die verschrikkelijke dingen die voor Hem lagen, niet hoefde door te maken. 36 ‘Abba! Vader!’ zei Hij. ‘Voor U is alles mogelijk. Neemt U die beker bij Mij vandaan. En toch, niet wat Ik wil, maar wat U wilt moet gebeuren.’ 37 Hij ging terug naar de drie leerlingen en zag dat zij in slaap waren gevallen. ‘Simon,’ zei Hij tegen Petrus, ‘slaap je? Is het zo moeilijk om een uur te waken? 38 Blijf toch wakker en bid dat jullie niet in verleiding komen. De geest is wel gewillig, maar het lichaam is zwak.’ 39 Hij ging weer weg en bad nog eens, met dezelfde woorden. 40 Maar de leerlingen konden hun ogen niet openhouden en vielen weer in slaap. Zij wisten niet wat zij moesten zeggen, toen Hij bij hen terugkwam. 41 Toen Hij voor de derde keer bij hen terugkwam, zei Hij: ‘Liggen jullie nog rustig te slapen? Het is zover, Ik, de Mensenzoon, zal in de handen van zondige mensen vallen. 42 Sta op, wij gaan. Kijk, daar is mijn verrader al.’
43 Op dat moment kwam Judas eraan, samen met een bende mannen die door de Hoge Raad waren gestuurd. Zij hadden zwaarden en knuppels bij zich. 44 Judas had met hen afgesproken dat hij Jezus, volgens het gebruik, met een kus zou begroeten. Daaraan konden zij zien wie zij gevangen moesten nemen. ‘Laat Hem niet ontsnappen,’ had hij gezegd. 45 Hij liep direct op Jezus toe. ‘Dag, Meester,’ zei hij en hij kuste Hem. 46 De andere mannen wisten wie ze moesten hebben en namen Jezus gevangen. 47 Maar een van de omstanders trok een zwaard, haalde uit en sloeg de knecht van de hogepriester een oor af. 48 Jezus zei: ‘U doet net of u een misdadiger komt arresteren! Waar zijn anders die zwaarden en knuppels voor nodig? 49 Had u Mij niet kunnen arresteren toen Ik in de tempel was? Daar was Ik toch elke dag? Maar het moet zo gaan als de profeten hebben gezegd. Daarom gebeurt dit allemaal.’ 50 Alle leerlingen lieten Hem in de steek en vluchtten weg. 51 Een jongeman volgde Jezus. Hij had niets anders aan dan een linnen kleed. 52 De mannen grepen hem, maar hij rukte zich los, liet het kleed achter en vluchtte naakt weg.
53 Jezus werd naar het paleis van de hogepriester gebracht, waar de Hoge Raad was bijeengekomen. 54 Petrus was Hem op een afstand gevolgd, tot op de binnenplaats van het paleis van de hogepriester. Daar zat hij zich tussen het personeel te warmen bij een groot vuur. 55 De leidende priesters en de andere leden van de Hoge Raad probeerden Jezus te veroordelen voor iets waarop de doodstraf stond. Maar dat lukte niet. 56 Er waren wel veel getuigen die Hem vals beschuldigden, maar zij spraken elkaar tegen. 57 Enkele valse getuigen beweerden dat zij Hem hadden horen zeggen: ‘Deze tempel is door mensen gemaakt. 58 Ik zal hem afbreken en na drie dagen een andere bouwen, zonder dat er een mens aan te pas komt.’ 59 Maar ook deze verhalen klopten niet. 60 De hogepriester stond op, trad naar voren en vroeg aan Jezus: ‘Waarom geeft U geen antwoord op de beschuldigingen van deze mannen?’ 61 Maar Jezus zweeg en gaf geen antwoord. De hogepriester vroeg: ‘Bent U de Christus? De Zoon van God?’ 62 ‘Ja,’ zei Jezus. ‘Dat ben Ik. En U zult de Mensenzoon zien zitten aan de rechterhand van God en u zult Hem ook zien terugkomen op de wolken aan de hemel.’ 63 De hogepriester scheurde van kwaadheid zijn kleren kapot. ‘Nu hebben wij geen getuigen meer nodig!’ riep hij. 64 ‘Hebt u gehoord hoe Hij God beledigde? Wat doen wij met Hem?’ Alle aanwezigen vonden dat Hij de doodstraf verdiende. 65 Sommigen begonnen Hem te bespuwen. Ze deden Hem een blinddoek voor en sloegen Hem in zijn gezicht. ‘Vertel eens, profeet,’ spotten zij, ‘wie heeft U geslagen?’ Hij werd ook geslagen door de knechten die Hem bewaakten.
66 Petrus zat nog steeds op de binnenplaats. Een dienstmeisje van de hogepriester zag hem bij het vuur zitten. 67 ‘Hé!’ zei zij en keek hem eens goed aan. ‘U was toch ook bij die man uit Nazareth, bij die Jezus?’ 68 Maar Petrus schudde zijn hoofd en zei: ‘Welnee, ik weet niet over wie u het hebt!’ Hij liep weg naar de poort. Even later begonnen de mensen in de poort er zelf over. ‘U bent wél een leerling van Jezus,’ zeiden zij tegen Petrus. ‘Het is duidelijk te horen dat u uit Galilea komt.’ 71 Hij begon te vloeken en bezwoer dat hij Jezus niet kende. ‘Ik ken die man niet,’ zei hij. 72 Hij had dit nog maar net gezegd of de haan kraaide voor de tweede keer. Toen schoot hem te binnen wat Jezus had gezegd: ‘Voor de haan twee keer heeft gekraaid, zul je drie keer hebben gezegd dat je Mij niet kent.’ Toen hij zich realiseerde wat hij had gedaan, barstte hij in tranen uit.

The Plot to Kill Jesus
14 After(A) two days it was the Passover(B) and the Festival(C) of Unleavened Bread.(D) The chief priests and the scribes(E) were looking for a treacherous(F) way to arrest and kill Him.(G) 2 “Not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be rioting among the people.”
The Anointing at Bethany
3 While(H) He was in Bethany(I) at the house of Simon who had a serious skin disease,(J) as He was reclining at the table,(K) a woman came with an alabaster jar of pure and expensive fragrant oil of nard. She broke the jar and poured it on His head.(L) 4 But some were expressing indignation to one another: “Why has this fragrant oil been wasted? 5 For this oil might have been sold for more than 300 denarii(M) and given to the poor.”(N) And they began to scold her.
6 Then Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing(O) for Me. 7 You always have the poor(P) with you, and you can do what is good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have Me.(Q) 8 She has done what she could; she has anointed My body(R) in advance for burial.(S) 9 I assure you:(T) Wherever the gospel(U) is proclaimed in the whole world,(V) what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”
10 Then(W) Judas Iscariot,(X) one of the Twelve,(Y) went to the chief priests(Z) to hand Him over(AA) to them. 11 And when they heard this, they were glad and promised to give him silver.[a](AB) So he started looking for a good opportunity to betray(AC) Him.
Preparation for Passover
12 On(AD) the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrifice the Passover lamb,(AE) His disciples(AF) asked Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare the Passover so You may eat it?”
13 So He sent two of His disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him. 14 Wherever he enters, tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher(AG) says, “Where is the guest room for Me to eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there.” 16 So the disciples(AH) went out, entered the city, and found it just as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
Betrayal at the Passover
17 When(AI) evening came, He arrived with the Twelve.(AJ) 18 While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “I assure you: One of you will betray Me—one who is eating with Me!”
19 They began to be distressed and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?”
20 He said to them, “It is one of the Twelve—the one who is dipping bread with Me in the bowl. 21 For the Son of Man(AK) will go just as it is written(AL) about Him,(AM) but woe(AN) to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
The First Lord’s Supper
22 As(AO) they were eating, He took bread,(AP) blessed and broke(AQ) it, gave it to them,(AR) and said, “Take it;[b] this is My body.”(AS)
23 Then He took a cup, and after giving thanks,(AT) He gave it to them, and so they all drank from it. 24 He said to them, “This is My blood that establishes the covenant;[c](AU) it is shed(AV) for many.(AW) 25 I assure you:(AX) I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine(AY) until that day when I drink it in a new(AZ) way[d] in the kingdom of God.”(BA) 26 After singing psalms,[e] they went out to the Mount of Olives.(BB)
Peter’s Denial Predicted
27 Then(BC) Jesus said to them, “All of you will run away,[f][g] because it is written:(BD)
28 But after I have been resurrected,(BG) I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”(BH)
29 Peter(BI) told Him, “Even if everyone runs away, I will certainly not!”
30 “I assure you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times!”(BJ)
31 But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with You, I will never deny You!” And they all said the same thing.
The Prayer in the Garden
32 Then(BK) they came to a place named Gethsemane, and He told His disciples,(BL) “Sit here while I pray.”(BM) 33 He took Peter,(BN) James,(BO) and John(BP) with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and horrified. 34 Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow[i] —to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.”(BQ) 35 Then He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour(BR) might pass from Him. 36 And He said, “Abba,(BS) Father!(BT) All things are possible(BU) for You. Take this cup(BV) away from Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”
37 Then He came and found them sleeping. “Simon,(BW) are you sleeping?” He asked Peter.(BX) “Couldn’t you stay awake one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray(BY) so that you won’t enter into temptation.(BZ) The spirit(CA) is willing, but the flesh(CB) is weak.”
39 Once again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing. 40 And He came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open.[j] They did not know what to say to Him.(CC) 41 Then He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The time has come. Look, the Son of Man(CD) is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.(CE) 42 Get up;(CF) let’s go! See—My betrayer is near.”
The Judas Kiss
43 While(CG) He was still speaking, Judas,(CH) one of the Twelve,(CI) suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes,(CJ) and the elders.(CK) 44 His betrayer had given them a signal. “The One I kiss,” he said, “He’s the One; arrest Him and take Him away under guard.” 45 So when he came, he went right up to Him and said, “Rabbi!”(CL)—and kissed Him. 46 Then they took hold of Him and arrested Him. 47 And one of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his ear.
48 But Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs, as though I were a criminal,[k] to capture Me? 49 Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple complex,(CM) and you didn’t arrest Me. But the Scriptures(CN) must be fulfilled.”(CO) 50 Then they all deserted Him and ran away.(CP)
51 Now a certain young man,[l] having a linen cloth wrapped around his naked body, was following Him. They caught hold of him, 52 but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.(CQ)
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin
53 They(CR) led Jesus away to the high priest,(CS) and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes(CT) convened.(CU) 54 Peter(CV) followed Him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the temple police,[m](CW) warming himself by the fire.[n]
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(CX) were looking for testimony against Jesus to put Him to death,(CY) but they could find none. 56 For many were giving false testimony(CZ) against Him, but the testimonies did not agree. 57 Some stood up and were giving false testimony against Him, stating, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘I will demolish this sanctuary made by human hands,(DA) and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’” 59 Yet their testimony did not agree(DB) even on this.
60 Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?” 61 But He kept silent and did not answer anything.(DC) Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Messiah,(DD) the Son(DE) of the Blessed(DF) One?”
62 “I am,”(DG) said Jesus, “and all of you[o] will see the Son of Man(DH) seated at the right hand(DI) of the Power and coming with the clouds(DJ) of heaven.”(DK)[p]
63 Then the high priest(DL) tore his robes(DM) and said, “Why do we still need witnesses?(DN) 64 You have heard the blasphemy!(DO) What is your decision?”[q]
And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.(DP) 65 Then some began to spit on Him, to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, saying, “Prophesy!”(DQ) The temple police(DR) also took Him and slapped Him.
Peter Denies His Lord
66 While(DS) Peter(DT) was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s servants came. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with that Nazarene,(DU) Jesus.”
68 But he denied it: “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about!” Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed.[r]
69 When the servant saw him again she began to tell those standing nearby, “This man is one of them!”
70 But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, “You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean!”[s](DV)
71 Then he started to curse[t] and to swear with an oath,(DW) “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
72 Immediately a rooster crowed a second time,(DX) and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” When he thought about it, he began to weep.[u]

The Plan to Kill Jesus
14 It was now only two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and teachers of the law were trying to find a way to use some trick to arrest Jesus and kill him. 2 But they said, “We must not do it during the feast. The people might cause a riot.”
A Woman with Perfume for Jesus
3 Jesus was in Bethany. He was at dinner in the house of Simon, who had a harmful skin disease. While Jesus was there, a woman came to him. She had an alabaster jar filled with very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. The woman opened the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.
4 Some of those who were there saw this and became angry. They complained to each other, saying, “Why waste that perfume? 5 It was worth a full year’s work. It could be sold, and the money could be given to the poor.” They spoke to the woman sharply.
6 Jesus said, “Don’t bother the woman. Why are you troubling her? She did a beautiful thing for me. 7 You will always have the poor with you. You can help them anytime you want. But you will not always have me. 8 This woman did the only thing she could do for me. She poured perfume on my body. She did this before I die to prepare me for burial. 9 I tell you the truth. The Good News will be told to people in all the world. And in every place it is preached, what this woman has done will be told. And people will remember her.”
Judas Becomes an Enemy of Jesus
10 One of the 12 followers, Judas Iscariot, went to talk to the leading priests. Judas offered to give Jesus to them. 11 The leading priests were pleased about this. They promised to pay Judas money. So he waited for the best time to give Jesus to them.
Jesus Eats the Passover Feast
12 It was now the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This was a time when the Jews always sacrificed the Passover lambs. Jesus’ followers came to him. They said, “We will go and prepare everything for the Passover Feast. Where do you want to eat the feast?”
13 Jesus sent two of his followers and said to them, “Go into the city. A man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 He will go into a house. Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks that you show us the room where he and his followers can eat the Passover Feast.’ 15 The owner will show you a large room upstairs. This room is ready. Prepare the food for us there.”
16 So the followers left and went into the city. Everything happened as Jesus had said. So they prepared the Passover Feast.
17 In the evening, Jesus went to that house with the 12. 18 While they were all eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth. One of you will give me to my enemies—one of you eating with me now.”
19 The followers were very sad to hear this. Each one said to Jesus, “I am not the one, am I?”
20 Jesus answered, “The man who is against me is 1 of the 12. He is the 1 who dips his bread into the bowl with me. 21 The Son of Man must go and die. The Scriptures say this will happen. But how terrible it will be for the person who gives the Son of Man to be killed. It would be better for that person if he had never been born.”
The Lord’s Supper
22 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread. He thanked God for it and broke it. Then he gave it to his followers and said, “Take it. This bread is my body.”
23 Then Jesus took a cup. He thanked God for it and gave it to the followers. All the followers drank from the cup.
24 Then Jesus said, “This is my blood which begins the new[a] agreement that God makes with his people. This blood is poured out for many. 25 I tell you the truth. I will not drink of this fruit of the vine[b] again until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 They sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus’ Followers Will All Leave Him
27 Then Jesus told the followers, “You will all lose your faith in me. It is written in the Scriptures:
‘I will kill the shepherd,
and the sheep will scatter.’ Zechariah 13:7
28 But after I rise from death, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
29 Peter said, “All the other followers may lose their faith. But I will not.”
30 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth. Tonight you will say you don’t know me. You will say this three times before the rooster crows twice.”
31 But Peter answered strongly, “I will never say that I don’t know you! I will even die with you!” And all the other followers said the same thing.
Jesus Prays Alone
32 Jesus and his followers went to a place called Gethsemane. He said to his followers, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 Jesus told Peter, James, and John to come with him. Then Jesus began to be very sad and troubled. 34 He said to them, “I am full of sorrow. My heart is breaking with sadness. Stay here and watch.”
35 Jesus walked a little farther away from them. Then he fell on the ground and prayed. He prayed that, if possible, he would not have this time of suffering. 36 He prayed, “Abba,[c] Father! You can do all things. Let me not have this cup[d] of suffering. But do what you want, not what I want.”
37 Then Jesus went back to his followers. He found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, why are you sleeping? You could not stay awake with me for one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray that you will not be tempted. Your spirit wants to do what is right, but your body is weak.”
39 Again Jesus went away and prayed the same thing. 40 Then he went back to the followers. Again he found them asleep because their eyes were very heavy. And they did not know what to say to Jesus.
41 After Jesus prayed a third time, he went back to his followers. He said to them, “You are still sleeping and resting? That’s enough! The time has come for the Son of Man to be given to sinful people. 42 Get up! We must go. Here comes the man who has turned against me.”
Jesus Is Arrested
43 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas came up. Judas was 1 of the 12 followers. He had many people with him. They were sent from the leading priests, the teachers of the law, and the Jewish elders. Those with Judas had swords and clubs.
44 Judas had planned a signal for them. He had said, “The man I kiss is Jesus. Arrest him and guard him while you lead him away.” 45 So Judas went to Jesus and said, “Teacher!” and kissed him. 46 Then the men grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47 One of the followers standing near drew his sword. He struck the servant of the high priest with the sword and cut off his ear.
48 Then Jesus said, “You came to get me with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal. 49 Every day I was with you teaching in the Temple. You did not arrest me there. But all these things have happened to make the Scriptures come true.” 50 Then all of Jesus’ followers left him and ran away.
51 A young man, wearing only a linen cloth, was following Jesus. The people also grabbed him. 52 But the cloth he was wearing came off, and he ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Leaders
53 The people who arrested Jesus led him to the house of the high priest. All the leading priests, the Jewish elders, and the teachers of the law were gathered there. 54 Peter followed far behind and entered the courtyard of the high priest’s house. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
55 The leading priests and all the Jewish council tried to find something that Jesus had done wrong so they could kill him. But the council could find no proof against him. 56 Many people came and told false things about him. But all said different things—none of them agreed.
57 Then some men stood up and lied about Jesus. They said, 58 “We heard this man say, ‘I will destroy this Temple that men made. And three days later, I will build another Temple—a Temple not made by men.’” 59 But even the things these men said did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood before them and said to Jesus, “Aren’t you going to answer the charges these men bring against you?” 61 But Jesus said nothing. He did not answer.
The high priest asked Jesus another question: “Are you the Christ, the Son of the blessed God?”
62 Jesus answered, “I am. And in the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right side of the Powerful One. And you will see the Son of Man coming on clouds in the sky.”
63 When the high priest heard this, he was very angry. He tore his clothes and said, “We don’t need any more witnesses! 64 You all heard him say these things against God. What do you think?”
They all said that Jesus was guilty and should be killed. 65 Some of the people there spit at Jesus. They covered his eyes and hit him with their fists. They said, “Prove that you are a prophet!” Then the guards led Jesus away and beat him.
Peter Says He Doesn’t Know Jesus
66 Peter was still in the courtyard when a servant girl of the high priest came there. 67 She saw Peter warming himself at the fire. She looked closely at him.
Then the girl said, “You were with Jesus, that man from Nazareth.”
68 But Peter said that he was never with Jesus. He said, “I don’t know or understand what you are talking about.” Then Peter left and went toward the entrance of the courtyard.[e]
69 The servant girl saw Peter there. Again she said to the people who were standing there, “This man is one of those who followed Jesus.” 70 Again Peter said that it was not true.
A short time later, some people were standing near Peter. They said, “We know you are one of those who followed Jesus. You are from Galilee, too.”
71 Then Peter began to curse. He said, “I swear that I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
72 As soon as Peter said this, the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Then Peter was very sad and began to cry.
