佃户的比喻(A)

12 耶稣又用比喻对他们说:“有一个人栽种了一个葡萄园,四面围上篱笆,挖了一个压酒池,盖了一座瞭望台,然后租给佃户,就远行去了。 到了时候,园主派了一个仆人到佃户那里,向佃户收取葡萄园一部分的果子。 佃户抓住他,打了他,放他空手回去。 园主再派另外一个仆人到他们那里,他们打伤了他的头,并且侮辱他。 园主又派另一个去,他们就把他杀了。后来又派去许多仆人,有的给他们打了,有的给他们杀了。 还有一个,就是园主的爱子,最后园主派他到那里去,说:‘他们必尊敬我的儿子。’ 那些佃户却彼此说:‘这是继承产业的;来,我们杀了他,产业就是我们的了。’ 于是抓住他,把他杀了,扔在葡萄园外。 这样,葡萄园的主人要怎么办呢?他要来除掉那些佃户,把葡萄园租给别人。 10 你们没有念过这段圣经吗:

‘建筑工人所弃的石头,

成了房角的主要石头;

11 这是主所作的,

在我们眼中看为希奇。’”

12 他们知道他这比喻是针对他们说的,就想要捉拿他,但因为害怕群众,只好离开他走了。

以纳税的事问难耶稣(B)

13 后来,他们派了几个法利赛人和希律党的人到耶稣那里去,要找他的把柄来陷害他。 14 他们来到了,就对他说:“老师,我们知道你为人诚实,不顾忌任何人,因为你不徇情面,只照着真理把 神的道教导人。请问纳税给凯撒可以不可以?我们该纳不该纳呢?” 15 耶稣看出他们的假意,就对他们说:“你们为甚么试探我呢?拿一个银币来给我,让我看看。” 16 他们就拿来了。耶稣问他们:“这是谁的像,谁的名号?”他们回答他:“凯撒的。” 17 耶稣说:“凯撒的应当归给凯撒, 神的应当归给 神。”他们就对他十分惊奇。

人复活后不娶不嫁(C)

18 撒都该人向来认为没有复活的事,他们来到耶稣那里,问他: 19 “老师,摩西曾写给我们说:‘如果一个人死了,留下妻子,没有儿女,他的弟弟就应当娶他的妻子,为哥哥立后。’ 20 从前有兄弟七人,头一个娶了妻子,死了,没有留下孩子; 21 第二个娶了她,也没有留下孩子,就死了;第三个也是这样。 22 那七个人都没有留下孩子,最后那女人也死了。 23 到了复活的时候,他们都要复活,她是哪一个的妻子呢?因为七个人都娶过她。” 24 耶稣对他们说:“你们错了,不正是因为你们不明白圣经,也不晓得 神的能力吗? 25 因为人从死里复活以后,也不娶,也不嫁,而是像天上的天使一样。 26 关于死人复活的事,摩西的经卷中荆棘篇上, 神怎样对他说:‘我是亚伯拉罕的 神,以撒的 神,雅各的 神’,你们没有念过吗? 27 他不是死人的 神,而是活人的 神。你们是大错特错了!”

最重要的诫命(D)

28 有一个经学家,听到他们的辩论,觉得耶稣回答得好,就来问他:“诫命中哪一条是第一重要的呢?” 29 耶稣回答:“第一重要的是:‘以色列啊,你要听!主我们的 神是独一的主。 30 你要全心、全性、全意、全力,爱主你的 神。’ 31 其次是:‘要爱人如己。’再没有别的诫命比这两条更重要的了。” 32 那经学家对耶稣说:“老师,是的,你说的很对, 神是独一的,除了他以外再没有别的 神。 33 我们要用全心、全意、全力去爱他,并且要爱人如己,这就比一切燔祭和各样祭物好得多了。” 34 耶稣见他回答得有智慧,就对他说:“你距离 神的国不远了。”从此再也没有人敢问他了。

大卫称基督为主(E)

35 耶稣在殿里教训人,说:“经学家怎么说基督是大卫的子孙呢? 36 大卫自己被圣灵感动却说:

‘主对我的主说:

你坐在我的右边,

等我把你的仇敌放在你的脚下(有些抄本作“等我使你的仇敌作你的脚凳”)。’

37 大卫自己既然称他为主,他又怎么会是大卫的子孙呢?”群众都喜欢听他。

耶稣叫人提防经学家(F)

38 耶稣教导人的时候,说:“你们要提防经学家,他们喜欢穿长袍走来走去,喜欢人在市中心向他们问安, 39 又喜欢会堂里的高位,筵席上的首座。 40 他们吞没了寡妇的房产,又假装作冗长的祷告。这些人必受更重的刑罚。”

穷寡妇的奉献(G)

41 耶稣面对银库坐着,看着大家怎样把钱投入库中。许多有钱的人投入很多的钱。 42 后来,有一个穷寡妇来投入了两个小钱,就是一个铜钱。 43 耶稣把门徒叫过来,对他们说:“我实在告诉你们,这穷寡妇投入库里的,比众人投的更多。 44 因为他们都是把自己剩余的投入,这寡妇是自己不足,却把她一切所有的,就是全部养生的,都投进去了。”

12 And he began to say to them in parables, A man planted a vineyard, and made a fence round [it] and dug a wine-vat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country.

And he sent a bondman to the husbandmen at the season, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.

But they took him, and beat [him], and sent [him] away empty.

And again he sent to them another bondman; and [at] him they [threw stones, and] struck [him] on the head, and sent [him] away with insult.

And [again] he sent another, and him they killed; and many others, beating some and killing some.

Having yet therefore one beloved son, he sent also him to them the last, saying, They will have respect for my son.

But those husbandmen said to one another, This is the heir: come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours.

And they took him and killed him, and cast him forth out of the vineyard.

What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others.

10 Have ye not even read this scripture, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone:

11 this is of [the] Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes?

12 And they sought to lay hold of him, and they feared the crowd; for they knew that he had spoken the parable of them. And they left him and went away.

13 And they send to him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, that they might catch him in speaking.

14 And they come and say to him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest not for any one; for thou regardest not men's person, but teachest the way of God with truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?

15 Should we give, or should we not give? But he knowing their hypocrisy said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Bring me a denarius that I may see [it].

16 And they brought [it]. And he says to them, Whose [is] this image and superscription? And they said to him, Caesar's.

17 And Jesus answering said to them, Pay what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God. And they wondered at him.

18 And Sadducees come to him, that say there is no resurrection; and they demanded of him saying,

19 Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if any one's brother die, and leave a wife behind, and leave no children, that his brother shall take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother.

20 There were seven brethren; and the first took a wife, and dying did not leave seed;

21 and the second took her and died, and neither did he leave seed; and the third likewise.

22 And the seven [took her and] did not leave seed. Last of all the woman also died.

23 In the resurrection, when they shall rise again, of which of them shall she be wife, for the seven had her as wife?

24 And Jesus answering said to them, Do not ye therefore err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God?

25 For when they rise from among [the] dead they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels [who are] in the heavens.

26 But concerning the dead that they rise, have ye not read in the book of Moses, in [the section of] the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, *I* [am] the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

27 He is not the God of [the] dead, but of [the] living. *Ye* therefore greatly err.

28 And one of the scribes who had come up, and had heard them reasoning together, perceiving that he had answered them well, demanded of him, Which is [the] first commandment of all?

29 And Jesus answered him, [The] first commandment of all [is], Hear, Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord;

30 and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding, and with all thy strength. This is [the] first commandment.

31 And a second like it [is] this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is not another commandment greater than these.

32 And the scribe said to him, Right, teacher; thou hast spoken according to [the] truth. For he is one, and there is none other besides him;

33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the intelligence, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbour as one's self, is more than all the burnt-offerings and sacrifices.

34 And Jesus, seeing that he had answered intelligently, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no one dared question him any more.

35 And Jesus answering said [as he was] teaching in the temple, How do the scribes say that the Christ is son of David?

36 [for] David himself said [speaking] in the Holy Spirit, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand until I put thine enemies [as] footstool of thy feet.

37 David himself [therefore] calls him Lord, and whence is he his son? And the mass of the people heard him gladly.

38 And he said to them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and salutations in the marketplaces,

39 and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at suppers;

40 who devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext make long prayers. These shall receive a severer judgment.

41 And Jesus, having sat down opposite the treasury, saw how the crowd was casting money into the treasury; and many rich cast in much.

42 And a poor widow came and cast in two mites, which is a farthing.

43 And having called his disciples to [him] he said to them, Verily I say unto you, This poor widow has cast in more than all who have cast into the treasury:

44 for all have cast in of that which they had in abundance, but she of her destitution has cast in all that she had, the whole of her living.

The Parable of the Tenants in the Vineyard(A)

12 (B)Then Jesus spoke to them in parables: “Once there was a man who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a hole for the wine press, and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to tenants and left home on a trip. When the time came to gather the grapes, he sent a slave to the tenants to receive from them his share of the harvest. The tenants grabbed the slave, beat him, and sent him back without a thing. Then the owner sent another slave; the tenants beat him over the head and treated him shamefully. The owner sent another slave, and they killed him; and they treated many others the same way, beating some and killing others. The only one left to send was the man's own dear son. Last of all, then, he sent his son to the tenants. ‘I am sure they will respect my son,’ he said. But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the owner's son. Come on, let's kill him, and his property will be ours!’ So they grabbed the son and killed him and threw his body out of the vineyard.

“What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do?” asked Jesus. “He will come and kill those tenants and turn the vineyard over to others. 10 (C)Surely you have read this scripture?

‘The stone which the builders rejected as worthless
    turned out to be the most important of all.
11 This was done by the Lord;
    what a wonderful sight it is!’”

12 The Jewish leaders tried to arrest Jesus, because they knew that he had told this parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went away.

The Question about Paying Taxes(D)

13 Some Pharisees and some members of Herod's party were sent to Jesus to trap him with questions. 14 They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you tell the truth, without worrying about what people think. You pay no attention to anyone's status, but teach the truth about God's will for people. Tell us, is it against our Law to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor? Should we pay them or not?”

15 But Jesus saw through their trick and answered, “Why are you trying to trap me? Bring a silver coin, and let me see it.”

16 They brought him one, and he asked, “Whose face and name are these?”

“The Emperor's,” they answered.

17 So Jesus said, “Well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God.”

And they were amazed at Jesus.

The Question about Rising from Death(E)

18 (F)Then some Sadducees, who say that people will not rise from death, came to Jesus and said, 19 (G)“Teacher, Moses wrote this law for us: ‘If a man dies and leaves a wife but no children, that man's brother must marry the widow so that they can have children who will be considered the dead man's children.’ 20 Once there were seven brothers; the oldest got married and died without having children. 21 Then the second one married the woman, and he also died without having children. The same thing happened to the third brother, 22 and then to the rest: all seven brothers married the woman and died without having children. Last of all, the woman died. 23 Now, when all the dead rise to life on the day of resurrection, whose wife will she be? All seven of them had married her.”

24 Jesus answered them, “How wrong you are! And do you know why? It is because you don't know the Scriptures or God's power. 25 For when the dead rise to life, they will be like the angels in heaven and will not marry. 26 (H)Now, as for the dead being raised: haven't you ever read in the Book of Moses the passage about the burning bush? There it is written that God said to Moses, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 27 He is the God of the living, not of the dead. You are completely wrong!”

The Great Commandment(I)

28 A teacher of the Law was there who heard the discussion. He saw that Jesus had given the Sadducees a good answer, so he came to him with a question: “Which commandment is the most important of all?”

29 (J)Jesus replied, “The most important one is this: ‘Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only Lord.[a] 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 (K)The second most important commandment is this: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ There is no other commandment more important than these two.”

32 (L)The teacher of the Law said to Jesus, “Well done, Teacher! It is true, as you say, that only the Lord is God and that there is no other god but he. 33 (M)And you must love God with all your heart and with all your mind and with all your strength; and you must love your neighbor as you love yourself. It is more important to obey these two commandments than to offer on the altar animals and other sacrifices to God.”

34 (N)Jesus noticed how wise his answer was, and so he told him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.”

After this nobody dared to ask Jesus any more questions.

The Question about the Messiah(O)

35 As Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he asked the question, “How can the teachers of the Law say that the Messiah will be the descendant of David? 36 (P)The Holy Spirit inspired David to say:

‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    Sit here at my right side
    until I put your enemies under your feet.’

37 David himself called him ‘Lord’; so how can the Messiah be David's descendant?”

Jesus Warns against the Teachers of the Law(Q)

A large crowd was listening to Jesus gladly. 38 As he taught them, he said, “Watch out for the teachers of the Law, who like to walk around in their long robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplace, 39 who choose the reserved seats in the synagogues and the best places at feasts. 40 They take advantage of widows and rob them of their homes, and then make a show of saying long prayers. Their punishment will be all the worse!”

The Widow's Offering(R)

41 As Jesus sat near the Temple treasury, he watched the people as they dropped in their money. Many rich men dropped in a lot of money; 42 then a poor widow came along and dropped in two little copper coins, worth about a penny. 43 He called his disciples together and said to them, “I tell you that this poor widow put more in the offering box than all the others. 44 For the others put in what they had to spare of their riches; but she, poor as she is, put in all she had—she gave all she had to live on.”
