Jesús entra en Jerusalén(A)
11 Cuando ya estaban cerca de Jerusalén, al aproximarse a los pueblos de Betfagé y Betania, en el Monte de los Olivos, Jesús envió a dos de sus discípulos, 2 diciéndoles:
—Vayan a la aldea que está enfrente, y al entrar en ella encontrarán un burro atado, que nadie ha montado todavía. Desátenlo y tráiganlo. 3 Y si alguien les pregunta por qué lo hacen, díganle que el Señor lo necesita y que en seguida lo devolverá.
4 Fueron, pues, y encontraron el burro atado en la calle, junto a una puerta, y lo desataron.
5 Algunos que estaban allí les preguntaron:
—¿Qué hacen ustedes? ¿Por qué desatan el burro?
6 Ellos contestaron lo que Jesús les había dicho; y los dejaron ir. 7 Pusieron entonces sus capas sobre el burro, y se lo llevaron a Jesús. Y Jesús montó. 8 Muchos tendían sus capas por el camino, y otros tendían ramas que habían cortado en el campo. 9 Y tanto los que iban delante como los que iban detrás, gritaban:
—¡Hosana! ¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor! 10 ¡Bendito el reino que viene, el reino de nuestro padre David! ¡Hosana en las alturas!
11 Entró Jesús en Jerusalén y se dirigió al templo. Miró por todas partes y luego se fue a Betania con los doce discípulos, porque ya era tarde.
Jesús maldice la higuera sin fruto(B)
12 Al día siguiente, cuando salían de Betania, Jesús sintió hambre. 13 De lejos vio una higuera que tenía hojas, y se acercó a ver si también tendría fruto, pero no encontró más que las hojas, porque no era tiempo de higos. 14 Entonces le dijo a la higuera:
—¡Nunca más vuelva nadie a comer de tu fruto!
Sus discípulos lo oyeron.
Jesús purifica el templo(C)
15 Después que llegaron a Jerusalén, Jesús entró en el templo y comenzó a echar de allí a los que estaban vendiendo y comprando. Volcó las mesas de los que cambiaban dinero a la gente, y los puestos de los que vendían palomas; 16 y no permitía que nadie pasara por el templo llevando cosas. 17 Y se puso a enseñar, diciendo:
—En las Escrituras dice: “Mi casa será declarada casa de oración para todas las naciones”, pero ustedes han hecho de ella una cueva de ladrones.
18 Al oír esto, los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley comenzaron a buscar la manera de matar a Jesús, porque le tenían miedo, pues toda la gente estaba admirada de su enseñanza. 19 Pero al llegar la noche, Jesús y sus discípulos salieron de la ciudad.
Instrucción sobre la fe(D)
20 A la mañana siguiente pasaron junto a la higuera, y vieron que se había secado de raíz. 21 Entonces Pedro, acordándose de lo sucedido, le dijo a Jesús:
—Maestro, mira, la higuera que maldijiste se ha secado.
22 Jesús contestó:
—Tengan fe en Dios. 23 Pues les aseguro que si alguien le dice a este cerro: “¡Quítate de ahí y arrójate al mar!”, y no lo hace con dudas, sino creyendo que ha de suceder lo que dice, entonces sucederá. 24 Por eso les digo que todo lo que ustedes pidan en oración, crean que ya lo han conseguido, y lo recibirán. 25 Y cuando estén orando, perdonen lo que tengan contra otro, para que también su Padre que está en el cielo les perdone a ustedes sus pecados.
La autoridad de Jesús(E)
27 Después de esto regresaron a Jerusalén. Mientras Jesús andaba por el templo, se acercaron a él los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la ley y los ancianos, 28 y le preguntaron:
—¿Con qué autoridad haces esto? ¿Quién te dio la autoridad para hacerlo?
29-30 Jesús les contestó:
—Yo también les voy a hacer una pregunta: ¿Quién envió a Juan a bautizar, Dios o los hombres? Contéstenme, y yo les diré con qué autoridad hago esto.
31 Ellos se pusieron a discutir unos con otros: «Si respondemos que Dios lo envió, va a decir: “Entonces, ¿por qué no le creyeron?” 32 ¿Y cómo vamos a decir que lo enviaron los hombres?...» Tenían miedo de la gente, pues todos creían que Juan era un profeta. 33 Así que respondieron a Jesús:
—No lo sabemos.
Entonces Jesús les contestó:
—Pues yo tampoco les digo con qué autoridad hago esto.

11 Lorsqu'ils approchèrent de Jérusalem, et qu'ils furent près de Bethphagé et de Béthanie, vers la montagne des oliviers, Jésus envoya deux de ses disciples,
2 en leur disant: Allez au village qui est devant vous; dès que vous y serez entrés, vous trouverez un ânon attaché, sur lequel aucun homme ne s'est encore assis; détachez-le, et amenez-le.
3 Si quelqu'un vous dit: Pourquoi faites-vous cela? répondez: Le Seigneur en a besoin. Et à l'instant il le laissera venir ici.
4 les disciples, étant allés, trouvèrent l'ânon attaché dehors près d'une porte, au contour du chemin, et ils le détachèrent.
5 Quelques-uns de ceux qui étaient là leur dirent: Que faites-vous? pourquoi détachez-vous cet ânon?
6 Ils répondirent comme Jésus l'avait dit. Et on les laissa aller.
7 Ils amenèrent à Jésus l'ânon, sur lequel ils jetèrent leurs vêtements, et Jésus s'assit dessus.
8 Beaucoup de gens étendirent leurs vêtements sur le chemin, et d'autres des branches qu'ils coupèrent dans les champs.
9 Ceux qui précédaient et ceux qui suivaient Jésus criaient: Hosanna! Béni soit celui qui vient au nom du Seigneur!
10 Béni soit le règne qui vient, le règne de David, notre père! Hosanna dans les lieux très hauts!
11 Jésus entra à Jérusalem, dans le temple. Quand il eut tout considéré, comme il était déjà tard, il s'en alla à Béthanie avec les douze.
12 Le lendemain, après qu'ils furent sortis de Béthanie, Jésus eut faim.
13 Apercevant de loin un figuier qui avait des feuilles, il alla voir s'il y trouverait quelque chose; et, s'en étant approché, il ne trouva que des feuilles, car ce n'était pas la saison des figues.
14 Prenant alors la parole, il lui dit: Que jamais personne ne mange de ton fruit! Et ses disciples l'entendirent.
15 Ils arrivèrent à Jérusalem, et Jésus entra dans le temple. Il se mit à chasser ceux qui vendaient et qui achetaient dans le temple; il renversa les tables des changeurs, et les sièges des vendeurs de pigeons;
16 et il ne laissait personne transporter aucun objet à travers le temple.
17 Et il enseignait et disait: N'est-il pas écrit: Ma maison sera appelée une maison de prière pour toutes les nations? Mais vous, vous en avez fait une caverne de voleurs.
18 Les principaux sacrificateurs et les scribes, l'ayant entendu, cherchèrent les moyens de le faire périr; car ils le craignaient, parce que toute la foule était frappée de sa doctrine.
19 Quand le soir fut venu, Jésus sortit de la ville.
20 Le matin, en passant, les disciples virent le figuier séché jusqu'aux racines.
21 Pierre, se rappelant ce qui s'était passé, dit à Jésus: Rabbi, regarde, le figuier que tu as maudit a séché.
22 Jésus prit la parole, et leur dit: Ayez foi en Dieu.
23 Je vous le dis en vérité, si quelqu'un dit à cette montagne: Ote-toi de là et jette-toi dans la mer, et s'il ne doute point en son coeur, mais croit que ce qu'il dit arrive, il le verra s'accomplir.
24 C'est pourquoi je vous dis: Tout ce que vous demanderez en priant, croyez que vous l'avez reçu, et vous le verrez s'accomplir.
25 Et, lorsque vous êtes debout faisant votre prière, si vous avez quelque chose contre quelqu'un, pardonnez, afin que votre Père qui est dans les cieux vous pardonne aussi vos offenses.
26 Mais si vous ne pardonnez pas, votre Père qui est dans les cieux ne vous pardonnera pas non plus vos offenses.
27 Ils se rendirent de nouveau à Jérusalem, et, pendant que Jésus se promenait dans le temple, les principaux sacrificateurs, les scribes et les anciens, vinrent à lui,
28 et lui dirent: Par quelle autorité fais-tu ces choses, et qui t'a donné l'autorité de les faire?
29 Jésus leur répondit: Je vous adresserai aussi une question; répondez-moi, et je vous dirai par quelle autorité je fais ces choses.
30 Le baptême de Jean venait-il du ciel, ou des hommes? Répondez-moi.
31 Mais ils raisonnèrent ainsi entre eux: Si nous répondons: Du ciel, il dira: Pourquoi donc n'avez-vous pas cru en lui?
32 Et si nous répondons: Des hommes... Ils craignaient le peuple, car tous tenaient réellement Jean pour un prophète.
33 Alors ils répondirent à Jésus: Nous ne savons. Et Jésus leur dit: Moi non plus, je ne vous dirai pas par quelle autorité je fais ces choses.

Jesus Enters Jerusalem as a King(A)
11 As Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] were coming closer to Jerusalem, they came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany near the Mount of Olives. From there Jesus sent two of his ·followers [disciples] 2 and said to them, “Go to the town ·you can see there [ahead of you; or opposite you C either Bethphage, Bethany, or another village]. When you enter it, you will ·quickly [immediately] find a ·colt [young donkey] tied, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here to me. 3 If anyone asks you why you are doing this, tell him ·its Master [the Lord; or its Owner] needs the colt and ·he will send it at once [or he will return it soon; C “he” could be either Jesus or the colt’s owner].”
4 They went into the town, found a colt tied in the street near the door of a house, and untied it. 5 Some people were standing there and asked, “What are you doing? Why are you untying that colt?” 6 They answered the way Jesus told them to answer, and the people let them take the colt.
7 They brought the colt to Jesus and put their coats on it, and Jesus sat on it [Zech. 9:9]. 8 Many people spread their coats on the road. Others cut [leafy] branches in the fields and spread them on the road. 9 The people were walking ahead of Jesus and behind him, shouting,
“·Praise God! [L Hosanna! C A Hebrew word originally used in praying for help, but by this time a joyful shout of praise to God.]
·God bless [Blessed is] the One who comes in the name of the Lord [Ps. 118:26]!
10 ·God bless [Blessed is] the coming kingdom of our father David!
·Praise to God in heaven [L Hosanna in the highest]!”
11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the Temple. After he had looked [around] at everything, since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with ·the twelve apostles [the Twelve].
12 The next day as Jesus was leaving Bethany, he became hungry. 13 Seeing a fig tree in leaf from far away, he went to see if it had any figs on it. But he found no figs, only leaves, because it was not the right season for figs. 14 So Jesus said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And Jesus’ ·followers [disciples] heard him say this.
Jesus Goes to the Temple(B)
15 When Jesus ·returned [came] to Jerusalem, he went into the ·Temple [temple complex; C the large temple area, not the inner building where only the priests could go] and began to ·throw [drive] out those who were buying and selling there. He turned over the tables of ·those who were exchanging different kinds of money [L the moneychangers], and he upset the benches of those who were selling doves [or pigeons; C moneychangers provided particular coins for the temple tax; doves or pigeons were sold for sacrifices; Lev. 5:7]. 16 Jesus refused to allow anyone to carry goods through the Temple courts. 17 Then he taught the people, saying, “It is written in the Scriptures, ‘My ·Temple [L House] will be called a house for prayer for people from all nations’ [Is. 56:7]. But you ·are changing God’s house [L have made it] into a ·‘hideout for robbers’ [T den of thieves’; Jer. 7:11].”
18 The ·leading [T chief] priests and the ·teachers of the law [scribes] heard all this and began trying to find a way to kill Jesus. They were afraid of him, because all the people were amazed at his teaching. 19 That evening, Jesus and his ·followers[a] [disciples] left the city.
The Power of Faith(C)
20 The next morning as Jesus was passing by with his ·followers [disciples], they saw the fig tree ·dry and dead [withered], even to the roots. 21 Peter ·remembered the tree and said to Jesus, “·Teacher [L Rabbi], look! The fig tree you cursed is ·dry and dead [withered]!”
22 Jesus answered, “Have faith in God. 23 I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘·Go [Be lifted up], fall into the sea.’ And if you have no doubts in your ·mind [heart] and believe that what you say will happen, ·God will do it for you [it will be done for you]. 24 So I tell you to believe that you have received ·the things [everything] you ask for in prayer, and ·God will give them to you [you will receive them]. 25 When you ·are praying [L stand praying], if you ·are angry with [have anything against] someone, forgive him so that your Father in heaven will also forgive your ·sins [transgressions; trespasses]. |26 But if you don’t forgive other people, then your Father in heaven will not forgive your ·sins [transgressions; trespasses].|”[b]
Leaders Doubt Jesus’ Authority(D)
27 Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] went again to Jerusalem. As Jesus was walking in the Temple [complex; area; courts; see 11:15], the ·leading [T chief] priests, the ·teachers of the law [scribes], and the elders came to him. 28 They said to him, “What authority do you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?”
29 Jesus answered, “I will ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you what authority I have to do these things. 30 Tell me: When John baptized people, was that authority from ·God [L heaven; C a reverential Jewish way of referring to God] or just from ·other people [human beings]?”
31 They argued about Jesus’ question, saying, “If we answer, ‘John’s baptism was from ·God [L heaven],’ Jesus will say, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘It was from ·other people [human beings],’ the crowd will be against us.” (These leaders were afraid of the people, because all the people believed that John was a prophet.)
33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Jesus said to them, “Then I won’t tell you what authority I have to do these things.”

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(A)(B)
11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany(C) at the Mount of Olives,(D) Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.(E) Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”
4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway.(F) As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna![a]”
10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”(H)
11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.(I)
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts(J)(K)(L)
12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.(M) 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[c]?(N) But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[d]”(O)
18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,(P) because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.(Q)
19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples[e] went out of the city.(R)
20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(S) look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly[f] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.(T) 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.(U) 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”(V) [26] [g]
The Authority of Jesus Questioned(W)
27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28 “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”
29 Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”
31 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)(X)
33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
