登山訓眾論福
5 耶穌看見這許多的人，就上了山，既已坐下，門徒到他跟前來， 2 他就開口教訓他們，說： 3 「虛心的人有福了！因為天國是他們的。 4 哀慟的人有福了！因為他們必得安慰。 5 溫柔的人有福了！因為他們必承受地土。 6 飢渴慕義的人有福了！因為他們必得飽足。 7 憐恤人的人有福了！因為他們必蒙憐恤。 8 清心的人有福了！因為他們必得見神。 9 使人和睦的人有福了！因為他們必稱為神的兒子。 10 為義受逼迫的人有福了！因為天國是他們的。 11 人若因我辱罵你們，逼迫你們，捏造各樣壞話毀謗你們，你們就有福了。 12 應當歡喜快樂，因為你們在天上的賞賜是大的。在你們以前的先知，人也是這樣逼迫他們。
門徒為光為鹽
13 「你們是世上的鹽。鹽若失了味，怎能叫它再鹹呢？以後無用，不過丟在外面，被人踐踏了。 14 你們是世上的光。城造在山上，是不能隱藏的。 15 人點燈，不放在斗底下，是放在燈臺上，就照亮一家的人。 16 你們的光也當這樣照在人前，叫他們看見你們的好行為，便將榮耀歸給你們在天上的父。
耶穌來成全律法和先知的道
17 「莫想我來要廢掉律法和先知，我來不是要廢掉，乃是要成全。 18 我實在告訴你們：就是到天地都廢去了，律法的一點一畫也不能廢去，都要成全。 19 所以，無論何人廢掉這誡命中最小的一條，又教訓人這樣做，他在天國要稱為最小的；但無論何人遵行這誡命，又教訓人遵行，他在天國要稱為大的。 20 我告訴你們：你們的義若不勝於文士和法利賽人的義，斷不能進天國。
論仇恨
21 「你們聽見有吩咐古人的話說：『不可殺人』，又說：『凡殺人的難免受審判。』 22 只是我告訴你們，凡[a]向弟兄動怒的，難免受審判；凡罵弟兄是拉加的，難免公會的審斷；凡罵弟兄是魔利的，難免地獄的火。 23 所以，你在祭壇上獻禮物的時候，若想起弟兄向你懷怨， 24 就把禮物留在壇前，先去同弟兄和好，然後來獻禮物。 25 你同告你的對頭還在路上，就趕緊與他和息，恐怕他把你送給審判官，審判官交付衙役，你就下在監裡了。 26 我實在告訴你：若有一文錢沒有還清，你斷不能從那裡出來。
論姦淫
27 「你們聽見有話說：『不可姦淫。』 28 只是我告訴你們，凡看見婦女就動淫念的，這人心裡已經與她犯姦淫了。 29 若是你的右眼叫你跌倒，就剜出來丟掉！寧可失去百體中的一體，不叫全身丟在地獄裡。 30 若是右手叫你跌倒，就砍下來丟掉！寧可失去百體中的一體，不叫全身下入地獄。 31 又有話說：『人若休妻，就當給她休書。』 32 只是我告訴你們，凡休妻的，若不是為淫亂的緣故，就是叫她做淫婦了；人若娶這被休的婦人，也是犯姦淫了。
論起誓
33 「你們又聽見有吩咐古人的話說：『不可背誓，所起的誓總要向主謹守。』 34 只是我告訴你們，什麼誓都不可起。不可指著天起誓，因為天是神的座位； 35 不可指著地起誓，因為地是他的腳凳；也不可指著耶路撒冷起誓，因為耶路撒冷是大君的京城； 36 又不可指著你的頭起誓，因為你不能使一根頭髮變黑變白了。 37 你們的話，是就說是，不是就說不是；若再多說，就是出於那惡者[b]。
論愛仇敵
38 「你們聽見有話說：『以眼還眼，以牙還牙。』 39 只是我告訴你們，不要與惡人作對。有人打你的右臉，連左臉也轉過來由他打； 40 有人想要告你，要拿你的裡衣，連外衣也由他拿去； 41 有人強逼你走一里路，你就同他走二里。 42 有求你的，就給他；有向你借貸的，不可推辭。
43 「你們聽見有話說：『當愛你的鄰舍，恨你的仇敵。』 44 只是我告訴你們，要愛你們的仇敵，為那逼迫你們的禱告， 45 這樣就可以做你們天父的兒子，因為他叫日頭照好人也照歹人，降雨給義人也給不義的人。 46 你們若單愛那愛你們的人，有什麼賞賜呢？就是稅吏不也是這樣行嗎？ 47 你們若單請你弟兄的安，比人有什麼長處呢？就是外邦人不也是這樣行嗎？ 48 所以你們要完全，像你們的天父完全一樣。
論施捨
6 「你們要小心，不可將善事行在人的面前，故意叫他們看見。若是這樣，就不能得你們天父的賞賜了。 2 所以，你施捨的時候，不可在你面前吹號，像那假冒為善的人在會堂裡和街道上所行的，故意要得人的榮耀。我實在告訴你們：他們已經得了他們的賞賜。 3 你施捨的時候，不要叫左手知道右手所做的， 4 要叫你施捨的事行在暗中，你父在暗中察看，必然報答你[c]。
論禱告
5 「你們禱告的時候，不可像那假冒為善的人，愛站在會堂裡和十字路口上禱告，故意叫人看見。我實在告訴你們：他們已經得了他們的賞賜。 6 你禱告的時候，要進你的內屋，關上門，禱告你在暗中的父，你父在暗中察看，必然報答你。 7 你們禱告，不可像外邦人用許多重複話，他們以為話多了必蒙垂聽。 8 你們不可效法他們，因為你們沒有祈求以先，你們所需用的，你們的父早已知道了。
主訓人的禱告
9 「所以，你們禱告要這樣說：『我們在天上的父，願人都尊你的名為聖， 10 願你的國降臨，願你的旨意行在地上，如同行在天上。 11 我們日用的飲食，今日賜給我們。 12 免我們的債，如同我們免了人的債。 13 不叫我們遇見試探，救我們脫離凶惡[d]。因為國度、權柄、榮耀，全是你的，直到永遠。阿們。[e]』 14 你們饒恕人的過犯，你們的天父也必饒恕你們的過犯。 15 你們不饒恕人的過犯，你們的天父也必不饒恕你們的過犯。
論禁食
16 「你們禁食的時候，不可像那假冒為善的人，臉上帶著愁容，因為他們把臉弄得難看，故意叫人看出他們是禁食。我實在告訴你們：他們已經得了他們的賞賜。 17 你禁食的時候，要梳頭洗臉， 18 不叫人看出你禁食來，只叫你暗中的父看見，你父在暗中察看，必然報答你。
論真財寶
19 「不要為自己積攢財寶在地上，地上有蟲子咬，能鏽壞，也有賊挖窟窿來偷。 20 只要積攢財寶在天上，天上沒有蟲子咬，不能鏽壞，也沒有賊挖窟窿來偷。 21 因為你的財寶在哪裡，你的心也在哪裡。
論心裡的光
22 「眼睛就是身上的燈。你的眼睛若瞭亮，全身就光明； 23 你的眼睛若昏花，全身就黑暗。你裡頭的光若黑暗了，那黑暗是何等大呢！
勿慮衣食
24 「一個人不能侍奉兩個主，不是惡這個愛那個，就是重這個輕那個。你們不能又侍奉神，又侍奉瑪門[f]。 25 所以我告訴你們，不要為生命憂慮吃什麼喝什麼，為身體憂慮穿什麼。生命不勝於飲食嗎？身體不勝於衣裳嗎？ 26 你們看那天上的飛鳥，也不種也不收，也不積蓄在倉裡，你們的天父尚且養活牠，你們不比飛鳥貴重得多嗎？ 27 你們哪一個能用思慮使壽數多加一刻呢[g]？ 28 何必為衣裳憂慮呢？你想野地裡的百合花怎麼長起來，它也不勞苦，也不紡線， 29 然而我告訴你們：就是所羅門極榮華的時候，他所穿戴的還不如這花一朵呢！ 30 你們這小信的人哪！野地裡的草今天還在，明天就丟在爐裡，神還給它這樣的裝飾，何況你們呢？ 31 所以，不要憂慮說吃什麼、喝什麼、穿什麼。 32 這都是外邦人所求的。你們需用的這一切東西，你們的天父是知道的。 33 你們要先求他的國和他的義，這些東西都要加給你們了。 34 所以，不要為明天憂慮，因為明天自有明天的憂慮。一天的難處一天當就夠了。
毋論斷人
7 「你們不要論斷人，免得你們被論斷。 2 因為你們怎樣論斷人，也必怎樣被論斷；你們用什麼量器量給人，也必用什麼量器量給你們。 3 為什麼看見你弟兄眼中有刺，卻不想自己眼中有梁木呢？ 4 你自己眼中有梁木，怎能對你弟兄說『容我去掉你眼中的刺』呢？ 5 你這假冒為善的人！先去掉自己眼中的梁木，然後才能看得清楚，去掉你弟兄眼中的刺。
6 「不要把聖物給狗，也不要把你們的珍珠丟在豬前，恐怕牠踐踏了珍珠，轉過來咬你們。
求則得之
7 「你們祈求，就給你們；尋找，就尋見；叩門，就給你們開門。 8 因為凡祈求的，就得著；尋找的，就尋見；叩門的，就給他開門。 9 你們中間誰有兒子求餅，反給他石頭呢？ 10 求魚，反給他蛇呢？ 11 你們雖然不好，尚且知道拿好東西給兒女，何況你們在天上的父，豈不更把好東西給求他的人嗎？ 12 所以，無論何事，你們願意人怎樣待你們，你們也要怎樣待人，因為這就是律法和先知的道理。
兩條門路
13 「你們要進窄門。因為引到滅亡，那門是寬的，路是大的，進去的人也多； 14 引到永生，那門是窄的，路是小的，找著的人也少。
兩種果樹
15 「你們要防備假先知。他們到你們這裡來，外面披著羊皮，裡面卻是殘暴的狼。 16 憑著他們的果子就可以認出他們來。荊棘上豈能摘葡萄呢？蒺藜裡豈能摘無花果呢？ 17 這樣，凡好樹都結好果子，唯獨壞樹結壞果子。 18 好樹不能結壞果子，壞樹不能結好果子。 19 凡不結好果子的樹就砍下來，丟在火裡。 20 所以，憑著他們的果子就可以認出他們來。 21 凡稱呼我『主啊，主啊』的人不能都進天國，唯獨遵行我天父旨意的人才能進去。 22 當那日，必有許多人對我說：『主啊，主啊，我們不是奉你的名傳道，奉你的名趕鬼，奉你的名行許多異能嗎？』 23 我就明明地告訴他們說：『我從來不認識你們。你們這些作惡的人，離開我去吧！』
兩等根基
24 「所以，凡聽見我這話就去行的，好比一個聰明人，把房子蓋在磐石上。 25 雨淋，水沖，風吹，撞著那房子，房子總不倒塌，因為根基立在磐石上。 26 凡聽見我這話不去行的，好比一個無知的人，把房子蓋在沙土上。 27 雨淋，水沖，風吹，撞著那房子，房子就倒塌了，並且倒塌得很大。」
28 耶穌講完了這些話，眾人都稀奇他的教訓， 29 因為他教訓他們正像有權柄的人，不像他們的文士。

八福

3 “心灵贫穷的人有福了，
因为天国是他们的。

盐和光
13 “你们是世上的盐。如果盐失去咸味，怎能使它再变咸呢？它将毫无用处，只有被丢在外面任人践踏。 14 你们是世上的光，如同建在山上的城一样无法隐藏。 15 人点亮了灯，不会把它放在斗底下，而是放在灯台上，好照亮全家。 16 同样，你们的光也应当照在人面前，好让他们看见你们的好行为，便赞美你们天上的父。
成全律法
17 “不要以为我是来废除律法和先知书，我不是来废除，乃是来成全。 18 我实在告诉你们，就是到天地都消失了，律法的一点一划都不会废除，全都要成就。 19 所以，谁违背这些诫命中最小的一条，并教导别人违背，谁在天国将被称为最小的。但谁遵守这些诫命，并教导别人遵守，谁在天国将被称为大的。 20 我告诉你们，除非你们的义胜过律法教师和法利赛人的义，否则断不能进天国。
论仇恨
21 “你们听过吩咐古人的话，‘不可杀人，杀人的要受审判。’ 22 但我告诉你们，凡无缘无故[a]向弟兄发怒的，要受审判；凡骂弟兄是白痴的，要受公会[b]的审判；凡骂弟兄是笨蛋的，难逃地狱的火。
23 “所以，你在祭坛前献祭的时候，要是想起有弟兄和你有过节， 24 就该把祭物留在祭坛前，先去跟他和好，然后再来献祭。
25 “趁着你和告你的人还在去法庭的路上，你要赶紧与对方和解。不然，他会把你交给审判官，审判官会把你交给差役关进监牢。 26 我实在告诉你，要是有一分钱没有还清，你绝不能从那里出来。
论通奸
27 “你们听过这样的话，‘不可通奸。’ 28 但我告诉你们，凡看见妇女就动淫念的，他在心里已经犯了通奸罪。 29 如果你的右眼使你犯罪，就把它剜掉！宁可失去身体的一部分，也比整个人下地狱好。 30 如果你的右手使你犯罪，就把它砍掉！宁可失去身体的一部分，也比整个人下地狱好。
论休妻
31 “还有话说，‘人若休妻，必须给她休书’。 32 但我告诉你们，除非是妻子不贞，否则，休妻就是使妻子犯通奸罪，娶被休女子的人也犯了通奸罪。
论起誓
33 “你们也听过吩咐古人的话，‘不可违背誓言，总要向主遵守所起的誓。’ 34 但我告诉你们，不可起誓。不可指着天起誓，因为天是上帝的宝座。 35 不可指着地起誓，因为地是上帝的脚凳。不可指着圣城耶路撒冷起誓，因为那是大君王的城。 36 也不可指着自己的头起誓，因为你不能使一根头发变黑或变白。 37 你们说话，是就说是，不是就说不是，多说的便是来自那恶者[c]。
论爱仇敌

43 “你们听过这样的话，‘要爱邻居，恨仇敌。’ 44 但我告诉你们，要爱仇敌，为迫害你们的人祷告。 45 这样，你们才是天父的孩子。因为祂让阳光照好人也照坏人，降雨给义人也给恶人。 46 如果你们只爱那些爱你们的人，有什么值得嘉奖的呢？就是税吏也会这样做。 47 如果你们只问候自己的弟兄，有什么特别呢？就是外族人也会这样做。 48 所以，你们要纯全，正如你们的天父是纯全的。
论周济穷人
6 “你们要小心，行善的时候不可张扬，故意叫人看见，否则就不能得你们天父的赏赐了。
2 “因此，周济穷人的时候，不要大吹大擂，像那些伪君子在会堂和街市上所行的一样，以博取人们的赞赏。我实在告诉你们，他们得到的赏赐仅此而已。 3 你们周济穷人的时候，右手所做的别叫左手知道， 4 要不声不响地去做。这样，鉴察隐秘事的天父必赏赐你们。
论祷告
5 “你们祷告时，不要像伪君子那样。他们喜欢站在会堂里和十字路口上公开祷告，故意让人看见。我实在告诉你们，他们得到的赏赐不过是人的赞赏。 6 你们祷告的时候，要进入内室，关上门，向你们肉眼看不见的父祈祷，鉴察隐秘事的父必赏赐你们。
7 “你们祷告时不可像外族人那样喋喋不休，他们以为长篇大论，就必蒙上帝垂听。 8 不可像他们那样，因为在你们祷告以前，你们的父已经知道你们的需要了。
9 “你们应当这样祷告，
“‘我们天上的父，
愿人们都尊崇你的圣名，
10 愿你的国度降临，
愿你的旨意在地上成就，就像在天上成就一样。
11 求你今天赐给我们日用的饮食。
12 饶恕我们的罪，
就像我们饶恕了得罪我们的人。
13 不要让我们遇见诱惑，
救我们脱离那恶者。

14 “如果你们饶恕别人的过犯，你们的天父也必饶恕你们的过犯。 15 如果你们不饶恕别人的过犯，你们的天父也不会饶恕你们的过犯。
论禁食
16 “你们禁食的时候，不要像伪君子那样愁眉苦脸，因为他们故意蓬头垢面，好让别人知道他们在禁食。我实在告诉你们，他们得到的赏赐不过是人的赞赏。 17 你禁食的时候要梳头洗脸， 18 不叫人们看出你在禁食，只让你肉眼看不见的父知道，鉴察隐秘事的父必赏赐你。
论积财
19 “不要为自己在世上积攒财宝，世上有虫子咬，会生锈，又有贼闯进来偷。 20 你们要把财宝积攒在天上，天上没有虫子咬，不会生锈，也没有贼闯进来偷。 21 要知道，你的财宝在哪里，你的心也在哪里。
22 “眼睛是身上的灯。如果你的眼睛明亮，全身都光明； 23 要是你的眼睛昏花[d]，全身就黑暗。如果你里面的光黑暗了，那黑暗是多么大啊！
24 “一个人不能服侍两位主人，因为他不是恨这位、爱那位，就是重这位、轻那位。你们不能又事奉上帝，又崇拜金钱。
不要忧虑衣食
25 “所以我告诉你们，不要为生活忧虑，如吃什么、喝什么，也不要为身体忧虑，如穿什么。难道生命不比饮食重要吗？身体不比穿着重要吗？
26 “你们看天上的飞鸟，它们不种，不收，也不在仓里积存粮食，你们的天父尚且养活它们，难道你们还不如飞鸟贵重吗？ 27 你们谁能用忧虑使自己多活片刻呢？
28 “何必为穿着忧虑呢？你们看看野地的百合花是如何生长的，它们既不劳苦，也不纺织。 29 但我告诉你们，就连所罗门王最显赫时的穿戴还不如一朵百合花！ 30 你们的信心太小了！野地里的草今天还在，明天就丢在炉中化为灰烬，上帝还这样装扮它们，何况你们呢？ 31 所以，你们不要忧虑‘吃什么？喝什么？穿什么？’ 32 因为这些都是外族人的追求，你们的天父知道你们的需要。
33 “你们要先寻求上帝的国和祂的义，这一切都会赐给你们。 34 所以，不要为明天忧虑，因为明天自有明天的忧虑，一天的难处一天担就够了。
责人先责己
7 “不要论断别人，免得你们被论断。 2 因为你们怎样论断别人，也必照样被论断；你们用什么尺度衡量别人，也要用什么尺度衡量你们。 3 为什么你只看见你弟兄眼中的小刺，却看不见自己眼中的大梁呢？ 4 既然你自己眼中有大梁，又怎么能对弟兄说‘让我除去你眼中的小刺’呢？ 5 你这伪君子啊！要先除掉自己眼中的大梁，才能看得清楚，好清除弟兄眼中的小刺。
6 “不要把圣物给狗，免得狗转过头来咬你们，也不要把珍珠丢在猪前，免得猪践踏了珍珠。
祈求、寻找、叩门
7 “祈求，就会给你们；寻找，就会寻见；叩门，就会给你们开门。 8 因为凡祈求的，就得到；寻找的，就寻见；叩门的，就给他开门。
9 “你们做父亲的，谁会在儿子要饼时给他石头， 10 要鱼时给他毒蛇呢？ 11 你们虽然邪恶，尚且知道把好东西给儿女，你们的天父岂不更要把好东西赐给求祂的人吗？
12 “所以，你们希望人怎样待你们，就要怎样待人，这是律法和先知的教导。
辨别与抉择
13 “你们要进窄门，因为通向灭亡的门大，路宽，进去的人也多； 14 但通向永生的门小，路窄，找到的人也少。
15 “你们要提防假先知，他们披着羊皮到你们当中，骨子里却是凶残的狼。 16 你们可以凭他们结的果子认出他们。荆棘怎能结出葡萄呢？蒺藜怎能长出无花果呢？ 17 同样，好树结好果子，坏树结坏果子； 18 好树结不出坏果子，坏树也结不出好果子。 19 凡不结好果子的树，都要被砍下来丢在火里。 20 因此，你们可以凭他们结的果子认出他们。 21 并不是所有称呼我‘主啊，主啊’的人都能进天国，只有遵行我天父旨意的人才能进去。 22 在审判那天，很多人会对我说，‘主啊，主啊，我们不是奉你的名传道，奉你的名赶鬼，奉你的名行了许多神迹吗？’ 23 我会清楚地告诉他们，‘我从来不认识你们，你们这些作恶的人走开！’
两种盖房子的人
24 “所以，凡听了我的这些话就去行的人，就像聪明人把房子建在磐石上。 25 任由风吹雨打、洪水冲击，房子仍屹立不倒，因为它建基在磐石上。 26 凡听了我这些话不去行的，就像愚昧人把房子建在沙土上。 27 遇到风吹雨打、洪水冲击，房子就倒塌了，而且倒塌得很厉害。”
28 大家听完耶稣这番教导，都很惊奇， 29 因为祂教导他们时像位有权柄的人，不像他们的律法教师。

Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount
5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes(A)
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(B)
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.(C)
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.(D)
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.(E)
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.(F)
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,(G)
for they will see God.(H)
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,(I)
for they will be called children of God.(J)
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,(K)
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(L)
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you,(M) persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.(N) 12 Rejoice and be glad,(O) because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.(P)
Salt and Light
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.(Q)
14 “You are the light of the world.(R) A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.(S) 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others,(T) that they may see your good deeds(U) and glorify(V) your Father in heaven.
The Fulfillment of the Law
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.(W) 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.(X) 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands(Y) and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.(Z)

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a](AB) and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry(AC) with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment.(AD) Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court.(AE) And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.(AF)
23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
Adultery
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[e](AG) 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.(AH) 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble,(AI) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble,(AJ) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Divorce
31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[f](AK) 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(AL)
Oaths
33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath,(AM) but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’(AN) 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all:(AO) either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;(AP) 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.(AQ) 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’;(AR) anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[g](AS)
Eye for Eye
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[h](AT) 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.(AU) 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.(AV)
Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i](AW) and hate your enemy.’(AX) 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,(AY) 45 that you may be children(AZ) of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.(BA) 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?(BB) Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.(BC)
Giving to the Needy
6 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.(BD) If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(BE)
Prayer(BF)
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing(BG) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,(BH) who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling(BI) like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.(BJ) 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need(BK) before you ask him.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father(BL) in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom(BM) come,
your will be done,(BN)
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.(BO)
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.(BP)
13 And lead us not into temptation,[j](BQ)
but deliver us from the evil one.[k]’(BR)
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.(BS) 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.(BT)
Fasting
16 “When you fast,(BU) do not look somber(BV) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(BW)
Treasures in Heaven(BX)
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,(BY) where moths and vermin destroy,(BZ) and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,(CA) where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.(CB) 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(CC)
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy,[l] your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy,[m] your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.(CD)
Do Not Worry(CE)
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry(CF) about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.(CG) Are you not much more valuable than they?(CH) 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[n]?(CI)
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor(CJ) was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?(CK) 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.(CL) 33 But seek first his kingdom(CM) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.(CN) 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Judging Others(CO)
7 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.(CP) 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.(CQ)
3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
6 “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
Ask, Seek, Knock(CR)
7 “Ask and it will be given to you;(CS) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds;(CT) and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts(CU) to those who ask him! 12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,(CV) for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.(CW)
The Narrow and Wide Gates
13 “Enter through the narrow gate.(CX) For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
True and False Prophets
15 “Watch out for false prophets.(CY) They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.(CZ) 16 By their fruit you will recognize them.(DA) Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?(DB) 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.(DC) 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.(DD) 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
True and False Disciples
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(DE) will enter the kingdom of heaven,(DF) but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.(DG) 22 Many will say to me on that day,(DH) ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’(DI) 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’(DJ)
The Wise and Foolish Builders(DK)
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice(DL) is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things,(DM) the crowds were amazed at his teaching,(DN) 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
