Jesu Rede über die Endzeit (Kapitel 24 und 25)

Jesus kündigt die Zerstörung des Tempels an

24 Jesus verließ den Tempel und war im Begriff wegzugehen. Da traten seine Jünger zu ihm und machten ihn auf ´die Pracht` der Tempelbauten aufmerksam. 2 »Das alles beeindruckt euch[a], nicht wahr?«, sagte Jesus. »Doch ich versichere euch: Kein Stein wird hier auf dem anderen bleiben; es wird alles zerstört werden.«

Vorzeichen des Endes

3 Später, als Jesus auf dem Ölberg saß und mit seinen Jüngern allein war, wandten sie sich an ihn und baten: »Sag uns doch: Wann wird das geschehen, und welches Zeichen wird deine Wiederkunft und das Ende der Welt ankündigen?«

4 »Gebt Acht, dass euch niemand irreführt!«, erwiderte Jesus. 5 »Denn viele werden unter meinem Namen auftreten; sie werden behaupten, sie seien der Messias[b], und werden viele irreführen. 6 Ihr werdet von Kriegen hören; ihr werdet hören, dass Kriegsgefahr droht.[c] Lasst euch dadurch nicht erschrecken. Es muss so kommen, aber das Ende ist es noch nicht. 7 Ein Volk wird sich gegen das andere erheben und ein Reich gegen das andere. Hungersnöte und Erdbeben werden bald diese Gegend heimsuchen und bald jene. 8 Doch das alles ist erst der Anfang, es ist ´wie` der Beginn von Geburtswehen.

9 Man wird euch verraten, verfolgen[d] und töten. Um meines Namens willen werdet ihr von allen Völkern gehasst werden. 10 Viele werden vom Glauben abfallen; sie werden einander verraten[e], sie werden einander hassen. 11 Falsche Propheten werden in großer Zahl auftreten und viele irreführen. 12 Und weil die Gesetzlosigkeit überhand nehmen wird, wird bei den meisten die Liebe erkalten. 13 Wer aber bis ans Ende standhaft bleibt, wird gerettet. 14 Die Botschaft[f] vom Reich ´Gottes` wird in der ganzen Welt verkündet werden, damit alle Völker sie hören[g]. Dann erst kommt das Ende.

15 Der Prophet Daniel hat von dem ›Gräuel der Entweihung[h]‹ gesprochen, der am heiligen Ort stehen wird. (Wer das liest, der überlege, ´was es bedeutet`.) Wenn ihr ihn dort stehen seht, 16 sollen die, die in Judäa sind, in die Berge fliehen. 17 Wer sich gerade auf dem Dach seines Hauses aufhält, soll nicht erst noch hinuntersteigen, um seine Sachen aus dem Haus zu holen. 18 Und wer auf dem Feld ist, soll nicht mehr nach Hause zurücklaufen, um seinen Mantel zu holen. 19 Wie schwer werden es die Frauen haben[i], die in jener Zeit ein Kind erwarten oder stillen! 20 Betet auch, dass ihr nicht im Winter oder an einem Sabbat fliehen müsst. 21 Denn es wird eine Not[j] herrschen, wie es sie von Beginn der Welt an bis heute nicht gegeben hat und wie es sie danach auch nie mehr geben wird. 22 Würde diese Zeit[k] nicht verkürzt, dann würde kein Mensch[l] gerettet werden; aber um der Auserwählten willen wird sie verkürzt werden.

23 Wenn dann jemand zu euch sagt: ›Seht, hier ist der Messias!‹ oder: ›Seht, er ist dort!‹, so glaubt es nicht. 24 Denn mancher falsche Messias und mancher falsche Prophet wird auftreten und große Zeichen und Wunder vollbringen, um, wenn möglich, sogar die Auserwählten irrezuführen[m]. 25 Denkt daran: Ich habe es euch vorausgesagt.

26 Wenn also die Leute zu euch sagen: ›Seht, er ist draußen in der Wüste!‹, dann geht nicht hinaus. Und wenn sie sagen: ›Seht, er ist hier im Haus[n]!‹, dann glaubt es nicht. 27 Denn wenn der Menschensohn wiederkommt, wird es sein, wie wenn der Blitz im Osten aufzuckt und bis zum Westen hin leuchtet. 28 Wo Aas liegt, da sammeln sich die Geier.«

Die Wiederkunft des Menschensohnes

29 »Unmittelbar nach jener Zeit der Not[o] ›wird sich die Sonne verfinstern, und der Mond wird nicht mehr scheinen. Die Sterne werden vom Himmel fallen, und die Kräfte des Himmels werden aus dem Gleichgewicht geraten.‹[p] 30 Und dann wird das Zeichen des Menschensohnes am Himmel erscheinen, und alle Völker der Erde[q] werden jammern und klagen[r]; sie werden den Menschensohn mit großer Macht und Herrlichkeit auf den Wolken des Himmels kommen sehen.[s] 31 Er wird seine Engel mit mächtigem Posaunenschall aussenden, und sie werden seine Auserwählten aus allen Himmelsrichtungen[t] zusammenbringen, von einem Ende des Himmels bis zum anderen.«

32 »Denkt zum Vergleich einmal an den Feigenbaum.[u] Wenn der Saft in die Zweige steigt und die Blätter sprießen, wisst ihr, dass es bald Sommer ist. 33 Genauso ist es, wenn ihr seht, dass alle diese Dinge geschehen. Dann wisst ihr, dass ´das Kommen des Menschensohnes` nahe bevorsteht. 34 Ich sage euch: Diese Generation[v] wird nicht vergehen, bis das alles geschehen ist. 35 Himmel und Erde werden vergehen, aber meine Worte werden nicht vergehen.

36 Doch wann jener Tag und jene Stunde sein werden, weiß niemand, auch nicht die Engel im Himmel, nicht einmal der Sohn[w]; nur der Vater weiß es. 37 Bei der Wiederkunft des Menschensohnes wird es wie in den Tagen Noahs sein. 38 Damals vor der großen Flut aßen und tranken die Menschen, sie heirateten und wurden verheiratet[x] – bis zu dem Tag, an dem Noah in die Arche ging. 39 Sie merkten nichts, bis die Flut hereinbrach und sie alle hinwegraffte. So wird es auch bei der Wiederkunft des Menschensohnes sein. 40 Von zwei Männern, die dann auf dem Feld arbeiten, wird der eine angenommen[y] und der andere zurückgelassen. 41 Von zwei Frauen, die zusammen[z] Getreide mahlen, wird die eine angenommen und die andere zurückgelassen. 42 Seid also wachsam! Denn ihr wisst nicht, an welchem Tag euer Herr kommt.«

Der Vergleich mit dem wachsamen Hausherrn

43 »Ihr könnt gewiss sein: Ein Hausherr, der wüsste, zu welchem Zeitpunkt in der Nacht[aa] der Dieb kommt, würde wach bleiben und nicht zulassen, dass in sein Haus eingebrochen wird. 44 Darum haltet auch ihr euch ständig bereit; denn der Menschensohn kommt zu einem Zeitpunkt, an dem ihr nicht damit rechnet.«

Der Vergleich mit dem treuen und dem bösen Diener

45 »Woran erkennt man denn einen treuen und klugen Diener? Angenommen, ein Herr hat einem seiner Diener die Verantwortung übertragen, der ganzen Dienerschaft zur gegebenen Zeit das Essen auszuteilen. 46 Wenn nun sein Herr kommt und ihn bei der Arbeit findet – wie glücklich ist da der Diener zu preisen! 47 Ich sage euch: Der Herr wird ihm die Verantwortung für seinen ganzen Besitz übertragen. 48 Wenn jener Diener aber ein böser Mensch ist und sich sagt: ›Mein Herr kommt noch lange nicht!‹ 49 und anfängt, die anderen Diener[ab] zu schlagen, während er selbst mit Trunkenbolden schwelgt und prasst, 50 dann wird sein Herr an einem Tag kommen, an dem er ihn nicht erwartet, und zu einem Zeitpunkt, an dem er es nicht vermutet[ac]. 51 Er wird den Diener in Stücke hauen und dorthin bringen lassen, wo die Heuchler sind und wo[ad] es nichts gibt als lautes Jammern und angstvolles Zittern und Beben.«

Signs of Christ’s Return

24 Jesus left the temple area and was going on His way when His disciples came up to Him to call His attention to the [magnificent and massive] [a]buildings of the temple.(A) 2 And He said to them, “Do you see all these things? I assure you and most solemnly say to you, not one stone here will be left on another, which will not be torn down.”

3 While Jesus was seated on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, and said, “Tell us, when will this [destruction of the temple] take place, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end (completion, consummation) of the age?”

4 Jesus answered, “Be careful that no one misleads you [deceiving you and leading you into error]. 5 For many will come in My name [misusing it, and appropriating the strength of the name which belongs to Me], saying, ‘I am the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed),’ and they will mislead many. 6 You will continually hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end [of the age]. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs [of the intolerable anguish and the time of unprecedented trouble].

9 “Then they will hand you over to [endure] tribulation, and will put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. 10 At that time many will be offended and repelled [by their association with Me] and will fall away [from the One whom they should trust] and will betray one another [handing over believers to their persecutors] and will hate one another. 11 Many false prophets will appear and mislead many. 12 Because lawlessness is increased, the love of most people will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures and bears up [under suffering] to the end will be saved. 14 This good news of the kingdom [the gospel] will be preached throughout the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end [of the age] will come.

Perilous Times

15 “So when you see the [b]abomination of desolation [the appalling sacrilege that astonishes and makes desolate], spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the Holy Place (let the [c]reader understand),(B) 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains [for refuge]. 17 Whoever is on the housetop must not go down to get the things that are in his house [because there will not be enough time]. 18 Whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his coat. 19 And woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 Pray that your flight [from persecution and suffering] will not be in winter, or on a Sabbath [when Jewish laws prohibit travel]. 21 For [d]at that time there will be a great tribulation (pressure, distress, oppression), such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will [again].(C) 22 And if those days [of tribulation] had not been cut short, no human life would be saved; but for the sake of the elect (God’s chosen ones) those days will be shortened. 23 Then if anyone says to you [during the great tribulation], ‘Look! Here is the Christ,’ or ‘There He is,’ do not believe it. 24 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and they will provide great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect (God’s chosen ones). 25 Listen carefully, I have told you in advance. 26 So if they say to you, ‘Look! He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out there, or, ‘Look! He is in the inner rooms [of a house],’ do not believe it. 27 For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming [in glory] of the Son of Man [everyone will see Him clearly]. 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the [e]vultures will flock together.(D)

The Glorious Return

29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not provide its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.(E) 30 And at that time the sign of the Son of Man [coming in His glory] will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth [and especially Israel] will mourn [regretting their rebellion and rejection of the Messiah], and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory [in brilliance and splendor].(F) 31 And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet and they will gather together His elect (God’s chosen ones) from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.(G)

Parable of the Fig Tree

32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its young shoots become tender and it puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near;(H) 33 so you, too, when you see all [f]these things [taking place], know for certain that He is near, right [g]at the door. 34 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, this generation [the people living when these signs and events begin] will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth [as now known] will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

36 “But of that [exact] day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son [in His humanity], but the Father alone. 37 For the coming of the Son of Man (the Messiah) will be just like the days of Noah. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the [very] day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they did not know or understand until the flood came and swept them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be [unexpected judgment].(I) 40 At that time two men will be in the field; one will be [h]taken [for judgment] and one will be left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken [for judgment] and one will be left.

Be Ready for His Coming

42 “So be alert [give strict attention, be cautious and active in faith], for you do not know which day [whether near or far] your Lord is coming. 43 But understand this: If the head of the house had known what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.(J) 44 Therefore, you [who follow Me] must also be ready; because the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not expect Him.

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant whom his master has put in charge of his household to give the others [in the house] their food and supplies at the proper time?(K) 46 Blessed is that [faithful] servant when his master returns and finds him doing so. 47 I assure you and most solemnly say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But if that servant is evil and says in his heart, ‘My master is taking his time [he will not return for a long while],’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards; 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour of which he is not aware, 51 and will cut him in two and put him with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping [over sorrow and pain] and grinding of teeth [over distress and anger].

  1. Matthew 24:1 The massive size and polished surfaces of the fitted stones that formed the temple structure created a magnificent sight (cf Luke 21:5). The refurbishing of the temple was begun by Herod the Great in 20 b.c. and was completed in a.d. 64 by Herod Agrippa II. The rabbis had a saying: “Whoever has not seen the temple of Herod has never seen a beautiful building” (as quoted from the Talmud). They also said that Herod built it of yellow, white, and perhaps blue marble; and that he intended to cover it with gold, but the rabbis advised him not to because it was beautiful just as it was, looking like the waves of the sea.
  2. Matthew 24:15 I.e. the Antichrist (2 Thess 2:4), “the prince who is to come” who will make a covenant with Israel, then break it in the middle of the tribulation (the seven-year period of Dan 9:27).
  3. Matthew 24:15 I.e. the reader of the book of Daniel (cf 24:15). Jesus is indicating that the final fulfillment of this prophecy is yet to come.
  4. Matthew 24:21 The most obvious sign during the tribulation, prior to the second coming of Jesus, is when the abomination that causes desolation (the Antichrist) sets his image in the temple.
  5. Matthew 24:28 The Greek for “vultures” can also be translated “eagles,” but the reference is most likely to the vulture, which the Greek word includes with eagles as a class. The meaning of this much discussed verse is either that the corpse represents the returning Christ, whose appearance will attract the attention of the entire world, that is, the vultures; or that the corrupt world is the corpse, about to be judged by the returning Christ (Rev 19:18).
  6. Matthew 24:33 I.e. false christs, wars, famines, earthquakes.
  7. Matthew 24:33 I.e. the return of the Christ is imminent.
  8. Matthew 24:40 This is not the removal of the church described in 1 Thess 4:13-18 and Rev 3:10. The one taken is taken for judgment just as the wicked were taken by the flood in Noah’s day. The one left is left to enter the kingdom that Christ will establish.

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(A)

24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another;(B) every one will be thrown down.”

3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,(C) the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming(D) and of the end of the age?”(E)

4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(F) 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.(G) 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(H) There will be famines(I) and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted(J) and put to death,(K) and you will be hated by all nations because of me.(L) 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets(M) will appear and deceive many people.(N) 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(O) 14 And this gospel of the kingdom(P) will be preached in the whole world(Q) as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

15 “So when you see standing in the holy place(R) ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’[a](S) spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the housetop(T) go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(U) 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.(V)

22 “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect(W) those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.(X) 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders(Y) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.

26 “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as lightning(Z) that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming(AA) of the Son of Man.(AB) 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.(AC)

29 “Immediately after the distress of those days

“‘the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
    and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[b](AD)

30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth[c] will mourn(AE) when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven,(AF) with power and great glory.[d] 31 And he will send his angels(AG) with a loud trumpet call,(AH) and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it[e] is near, right at the door.(AI) 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.(AJ) 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(AK)

The Day and Hour Unknown(AL)(AM)

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father.(AN) 37 As it was in the days of Noah,(AO) so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,(AP) up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.(AQ) 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.(AR) 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.(AS)

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.(AT) 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,(AU) he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready,(AV) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant,(AW) whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.(AX) 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.(AY) 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.(AZ) 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(BA)
