施洗約翰的門徒來見耶穌(A)

約翰在監獄裏聽見基督所做的事,就派他的門徒去, 問耶穌:「將要來的那位就是你嗎?還是我們要等候另一位呢?」 耶穌回答他們:「你們去,把所聽見、所看見的告訴約翰 就是盲人看見,瘸子行走,痲瘋病人得潔淨,聾子聽見,死人復活,窮人聽到福音。 凡不因我跌倒的有福了!」 他們一走,耶穌就對眾人談到約翰,說:「你們從前到曠野去,是要看甚麼呢?看風吹動的蘆葦嗎? 你們出去到底是要看甚麼?看穿細軟衣服的人嗎?那穿細軟衣服的人是在王宮裏。 你們出去究竟是要看甚麼?是先知嗎?是的,我告訴你們,他比先知大多了。 10 這個人就是經上所說的:

『看哪,我要差遣我的使者在你面前,
他要在你前面為你預備道路。』

11 我實在告訴你們,凡女子所生的,沒有一個比施洗約翰大;但在天國裏,最小的比他還大。 12 從施洗約翰的日子到今天,天國受到強烈的攻擊,強者奪取它[a] 13 眾先知和律法,直到約翰為止,都說了預言。 14 如果你們願意接受,這人就是那要來的以利亞 15 有耳的,就應當聽!

16 「我該用甚麼來比這世代呢?這正像孩童坐在街市上向同伴呼喊:

17 『我們為你們吹笛,你們不跳舞;
我們唱哀歌,你們不捶胸。』

18 約翰來了,既不吃也不喝,人們就說他是被鬼附的; 19 人子來了,也吃也喝,他們又說這人貪食好酒,是稅吏和罪人的朋友。而智慧是由它的果子來證實的[b]。」

耶穌責備不悔改的城(B)

20 那時,耶穌在一些城行了許多異能。因為城裏的人不肯悔改,他就責備那些城說: 21 哥拉汛哪,你有禍了!伯賽大啊,你有禍了!因為在你們中間所行的異能若行在推羅西頓,他們早已披麻蒙灰悔改了。 22 但我告訴你們,在審判的日子,推羅西頓所受的,比你們還容易受呢! 23 迦百農啊,

你以為要被舉到天上嗎?
你要被推下陰間!

因為在你那裏所行的異能,若行在所多瑪,它還可以存留到今日。 24 但我告訴你們,在審判的日子,所多瑪地方所受的,比你們還容易受呢!」

到我這裏來(C)

25 那時,耶穌說:「父啊,天地的主,我感謝你!因為你把這些事向聰明智慧的人隱藏起來,而向嬰孩啟示出來。 26 父啊,是的,因為你的美意本是如此。 27 一切都是我父交給我的;除了父,沒有人知道子;除了子和子所願意啟示的人,沒有人知道父。 28 凡勞苦擔重擔的人都到我這裏來,我要使你們得安息。 29 我心裏柔和謙卑,你們當負我的軛,向我學習;這樣,你們的心靈就必得安息。 30 因為我的軛是容易的,我的擔子是輕省的。」

A Question from John the Baptist

11 And it happened that when Jesus had finished giving orders to his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and to preach in their towns. Now when[a] John[b] heard in prison the deeds of Christ, he sent word[c] by his disciples and[d] said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” And Jesus answered and[e] said to them, “Go and[f] tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised, and the poor have good news announced to them.[g] And whoever is not offended by me is blessed.”

Now as[h] these were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in the houses of kings. But why did you go out? To see a prophet?[i] Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet! 10 It is this man about whom it is written:

‘Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face,
    who will prepare your way before you.’[j]

11 Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen one greater than John the Baptist. But the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven is treated violently, and the violent claim[k] it. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John, 14 and if you are willing to accept it,[l] he is Elijah, the one who is going to come. 15 The one who has ears, let him hear!

16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to one another, 17 saying,

‘We played the flute for you and you did not dance;
we sang a lament and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a man who is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”[m]

Woes Pronounced on Unrepentant Towns

20 Then he began to reproach the towns in which the majority of his miracles had been done, because they did not repent: 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 Nevertheless I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and for Sidon on the day of judgment than for you! 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until today. 24 Nevertheless I tell you that it will be more bearable for the region of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you!”

A Yoke That Is Easy

25 At that time Jesus answered and[n] said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to young children.[o] 26 Yes, Father, for to do so was your gracious will.[p] 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom[q] the Son wants to reveal him.[r] 28 Come to me, all of you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke on you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to carry and my burden is light.”

Jesus and John the Baptist(A)

11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(B) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[a]

When John,(C) who was in prison,(D) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(E) or should we expect someone else?”

Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[b] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(F) Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(G)

As John’s(H) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(I) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(J) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,(K)
    who will prepare your way before you.’[c](L)

11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(M) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(N) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(O)

16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
    and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
    and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating(P) nor drinking,(Q) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(R) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

Woe on Unrepentant Towns(S)

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(T) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(U) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(V) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(W) 23 And you, Capernaum,(X) will you be lifted to the heavens? The Father Revealed in the Son(AA)

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(AB) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(AC) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

27 “All things have been committed to me(AD) by my Father.(AE) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(AF)

28 “Come to me,(AG) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(AH) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(AI) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(AJ) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(AK)
