¹⁶「這個世代的人好像什麼呢？他們好像一群在街上玩耍的兒童對別的孩子說，

¹⁷『我們吹娶親的樂曲，
你們不跳舞；
我們唱送葬的哀歌，
你們不悲傷。』

¹⁸約翰來了，也不吃也不喝，他們就說他被鬼附身。

¹⁶^(A)“But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, ¹⁷and saying:

‘We played the flute for you,
And you did not dance;
We mourned to you,
And you did not ^[a]lament.’

¹⁸For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’

¹⁶“To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
