3 Mes frères, qu'il n'y ait pas parmi vous un grand nombre de personnes qui se mettent à enseigner, car vous savez que nous serons jugés plus sévèrement.
2 Nous bronchons tous de plusieurs manières. Si quelqu'un ne bronche point en paroles, c'est un homme parfait, capable de tenir tout son corps en bride.
3 Si nous mettons le mors dans la bouche des chevaux pour qu'ils nous obéissent, nous dirigeons aussi leur corps tout entier.
4 Voici, même les navires, qui sont si grands et que poussent des vents impétueux, sont dirigés par un très petit gouvernail, au gré du pilote.
5 De même, la langue est un petit membre, et elle se vante de grandes choses. Voici, comme un petit feu peut embraser une grande forêt.
6 La langue aussi est un feu; c'est le monde de l'iniquité. La langue est placée parmi nos membres, souillant tout le corps, et enflammant le cours de la vie, étant elle-même enflammée par la géhenne.
7 Toutes les espèces de bêtes et d'oiseaux, de reptiles et d'animaux marins, sont domptés et ont été domptés par la nature humaine;
8 mais la langue, aucun homme ne peut la dompter; c'est un mal qu'on ne peut réprimer; elle est pleine d'un venin mortel.
9 Par elle nous bénissons le Seigneur notre Père, et par elle nous maudissons les hommes faits à l'image de Dieu.
10 De la même bouche sortent la bénédiction et la malédiction. Il ne faut pas, mes frères, qu'il en soit ainsi.
11 La source fait-elle jaillir par la même ouverture l'eau douce et l'eau amère?
12 Un figuier, mes frères, peut-il produire des olives, ou une vigne des figues? De l'eau salée ne peut pas non plus produire de l'eau douce.
13 Lequel d'entre vous est sage et intelligent? Qu'il montre ses oeuvres par une bonne conduite avec la douceur de la sagesse.
14 Mais si vous avez dans votre coeur un zèle amer et un esprit de dispute, ne vous glorifiez pas et ne mentez pas contre la vérité.
15 Cette sagesse n'est point celle qui vient d'en haut; mais elle est terrestre, charnelle, diabolique.
16 Car là où il y a un zèle amer et un esprit de dispute, il y a du désordre et toutes sortes de mauvaises actions.
17 La sagesse d'en haut est premièrement pure, ensuite pacifique, modérée, conciliante, pleine de miséricorde et de bons fruits, exempte de duplicité, d'hypocrisie.
18 Le fruit de la justice est semé dans la paix par ceux qui recherchent la paix.

3 我的兄弟，不应该以为你们中间有许多人都能当教师，因为你们知道当教师的我们，比其他人要受到更加严厉的裁判。 2 我们大家都常犯错误。如果一个人从没说过错话，那么，他就是个完美的人，他也就能够控制自己的整个身体。 3 我们把嚼子放到马嘴里，让它们服从我们，并让我们能控制住马的整个身躯。 4 船也是如此，尽管船体巨大，并受风吹逐，但它却由一个小小的舵操纵着，任凭舵手的意愿航行。 5 同样，舌头只是身体的一个很小的器官，但是它却能说大话。

真正的智慧
13 你们中谁是有智慧、有知识的人呢？他应该用善行、用伴智慧而来的谦卑把他的智慧表现出来。 14 如果你们心怀刻薄的嫉妒与自私的野心，你们就不能自夸你们的智慧，你们的夸耀就是掩盖真理的谎言。 15 那种“智慧”不是来自天上，而是来自尘世，它不是属灵的，它出自魔鬼。 16 因为凡有嫉妒和自私的地方，就有混乱和各种邪恶。 17 但是，来自上帝的智慧首先是纯洁的，它也是和平、自制、柔顺、充满怜悯、充满善果。它还是公正和真诚的。 18 用和平的方式，为和平工作的人，会得到来自正确生活的美好事物。

Controlling the Things We Say
3 My ·brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], not many of you should become teachers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly [Luke 12:48]. 2 We all ·make many mistakes [L stumble in many ways]. If people ·never said anything wrong [L did not stumble in speech/teaching/word], they would be perfect and able to ·control their entire selves, too [L bridle their whole body also]. 3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we ·can control [guide; direct] their whole bodies. 4 Also a ship is very big, and it is pushed by ·strong [fierce] winds. But a very small rudder ·controls [guides; steers] that big ship, making it go wherever the pilot wants. 5 It is the same with the tongue. It is a small ·part [member] of the body, but it ·brags [boasts] about great things.
A big forest fire can be started with only a little flame. 6 And the tongue is like a fire. It is a whole world of ·evil [iniquity; unrighteousness] among ·the parts of our bodies [L our members]. The tongue ·spreads its evil through [pollutes; stains; corrupts] the whole body. The tongue is set on fire by hell [L Gehenna; C a valley outside of Jerusalem where in the OT period children were sacrificed to a pagan god; later used as a burning trash heap; a metaphor for hell], and it starts a fire that influences ·all of life [L the wheel of birth/life]. 7 [L For] People can tame every ·kind [species] of wild animal, bird, reptile, and ·fish [L sea creature], and they have tamed them, 8 but no one can tame the tongue. It is ·wild and evil [or a restless evil; or an uncontrollable evil] and full of deadly poison. 9 ·We use our tongues to [L With it we] ·praise [bless] our Lord and Father, but ·then [L with it] we curse people, whom God made ·like himself [L in his likeness; Gen. 1:27]. 10 Praises and curses come from the same mouth! My ·brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], this should not happen. 11 Do ·good [fresh; L sweet] and ·bad [stale; or salt; L bitter] water flow from the same [L opening of a] spring? 12 My ·brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], can a fig tree make olives, or can a grapevine make figs? No! ·And a well full of salty water cannot give good water [L Neither can salt water make sweet].
True Wisdom
13 Are there those among you who are truly wise and ·understanding [insightful; discerning]? Then they should show it by ·living right [their good life/conduct/lifestyle] and ·doing good things [their deeds/works] with a ·gentleness [humility; meekness; Matt. 5:5; 11:29; Gal. 6:1] that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter ·jealousy [or envy] and ·are selfish [have selfish ambition] in your hearts, do not ·brag [boast; Jer. 9:23–24]. Your ·bragging [boasting] is a lie ·that hides [that denies; L against] the truth [or Don’t cover up the truth with bragging or lying]. 15 That kind of “wisdom” does not come ·from God [L down from above; C that is, from heaven] but ·from the world [is earthly]. It is ·not spiritual [natural; “soulish”; C human life apart from God; 1 Cor. 2:14]; it is ·from the devil [demonic]. 16 Where ·jealousy [or envy] and ·selfishness [selfish ambition] are, there will be ·confusion [chaos; disorder] and every ·kind of evil [evil thing/practice]. 17 But the wisdom that comes from ·God [L above; 3:15] is first of all pure, then peaceful [peace-loving], gentle [patient; considerate], and ·easy to please [or willing to yield; or open to reason]. This wisdom is ·always ready to help those who are troubled and to do good for others [L full of mercy and good fruits]. It is ·always fair [impartial] and ·honest [sincere; unhypocritical]. 18 ·People who work for peace in a peaceful way plant a good crop of right living [or Peacemakers who sow with peace will harvest a crop of justice/righteousness; Gal. 5:22–23].
