Le donne che accompagnavano Gesú
8 (A)In seguito egli se ne andava per città e villaggi, predicando e annunziando la buona notizia del regno di Dio. 2 Con lui vi erano i dodici e alcune donne che erano state guarite da spiriti maligni e da malattie: *Maria, detta Maddalena, dalla quale erano usciti sette demòni; 3 Giovanna, moglie di Cuza, l'amministratore di *Erode; Susanna e molte altre che assistevano Gesú e i dodici con i loro beni.
Il seminatore e i diversi terreni
4 (B)Or come si riuniva una gran folla e la gente di ogni città accorreva a lui, egli disse in *parabola:
5 «Il seminatore uscí a seminare la sua semenza; e, mentre seminava, una parte del seme cadde lungo la strada: fu calpestato e gli uccelli del cielo lo mangiarono. 6 Un'altra cadde sulla roccia: appena fu germogliato seccò, perché non aveva umidità. 7 Un'altra cadde in mezzo alle spine: le spine, crescendo insieme con esso, lo soffocarono. 8 Un'altra parte cadde in un buon terreno: quando fu germogliato, produsse il cento per uno». Dicendo queste cose, esclamava: «Chi ha orecchi per udire oda!»
9 I suoi discepoli gli domandarono che cosa volesse dire questa parabola. 10 Ed egli disse: «A voi è dato di conoscere i misteri del regno di Dio; ma agli altri se ne parla in parabole, affinché vedendo non vedano, e udendo non comprendano[a].
11 Or questo è il significato della parabola: il seme è la parola di Dio. 12 Quelli lungo la strada sono coloro che ascoltano, ma poi viene il *diavolo e porta via la parola dal loro cuore, affinché non credano e non siano salvati. 13 Quelli sulla roccia sono coloro i quali, quando ascoltano la parola, la ricevono con gioia; ma costoro non hanno radice, credono per un certo tempo ma, quando viene la prova, si tirano indietro. 14 Quello che è caduto tra le spine sono coloro[b] che ascoltano, ma se ne vanno e restano soffocati dalle preoccupazioni, dalle ricchezze e dai piaceri della vita, e non arrivano a maturità. 15 E quello che è caduto in un buon terreno sono coloro i quali, dopo aver udito la parola, la ritengono in un cuore onesto e buono, e portano frutto con perseveranza.
La lampada sul candeliere
16 (C)«Nessuno accende una lampada e poi la copre con un vaso, o la mette sotto il letto; anzi la mette sul *candeliere, perché chi entra veda la luce. 17 Poiché non c'è nulla di nascosto che non debba manifestarsi, né di segreto che non debba essere conosciuto e venire alla luce. 18 Attenti dunque a come ascoltate: perché a chi ha, sarà dato; ma a chi non ha, anche quello che pensa di avere gli sarà tolto».
La madre e i fratelli di Gesú
19 (D)Sua madre e i suoi fratelli vennero a trovarlo; ma non potevano avvicinarlo a motivo della folla. 20 Gli fu riferito: «Tua madre e i tuoi fratelli sono là fuori, e vogliono vederti». 21 Ma egli rispose loro: «Mia madre e i miei fratelli sono quelli che ascoltano la parola di Dio e la mettono in pratica».
Gesú calma la tempesta
22 (E)Un giorno egli salí su una barca con i suoi discepoli, e disse loro: «Passiamo all'altra riva del lago». E presero il largo. 23 Mentre navigavano, egli si addormentò; e si abbatté sul lago un turbine di vento, tanto che la barca si riempiva d'acqua, ed essi erano in pericolo. 24 I discepoli, avvicinatisi, lo svegliarono, dicendo: «Maestro, Maestro, noi periamo!» Ma egli, destatosi, sgridò il vento e i flutti, che si calmarono, e si fece bonaccia. 25 Poi disse loro: «Dov'è la vostra fede?» Ma essi, impauriti e meravigliati, dicevano l'uno all'altro: «Chi è mai costui che comanda anche ai venti e all'acqua, e gli ubbidiscono?»
Gesú guarisce l'indemoniato di Gerasa
26 (F)Approdarono nel paese dei *Gerasèni, che sta di fronte alla *Galilea. 27 Quando egli fu sceso a terra, gli venne incontro un uomo della città: era posseduto da demòni e da molto tempo non indossava vestiti, non abitava in una casa, ma stava fra le tombe. 28 Appena vide Gesú, lanciò un grido, si inginocchiò davanti a lui e disse a gran voce: «Che c'è fra me e te, Gesú, *Figlio del Dio Altissimo? Ti prego, non tormentarmi». 29 Gesú, infatti, aveva comandato allo spirito immondo di uscire da quell'uomo, di cui si era impadronito da molto tempo; e, anche quando lo legavano con catene e lo custodivano in ceppi, spezzava i legami, e veniva trascinato via dal demonio nei deserti. 30 Gesú gli domandò: «Qual è il tuo nome?» Ed egli rispose: «Legione»; perché molti demòni erano entrati in lui. 31 Ed essi lo pregavano che non comandasse loro di andare nell'abisso. 32 C'era là un branco numeroso di porci che pascolava sul monte; e i demòni lo pregarono di permetter loro di entrare in quelli. Ed egli lo permise. 33 I demòni, usciti da quell'uomo, entrarono nei porci; e quel branco si gettò a precipizio giú nel lago e affogò. 34 Coloro che li custodivano videro ciò che era avvenuto, se ne fuggirono e portarono la notizia in città e per la campagna. 35 La gente uscí a vedere l'accaduto; e, venuta da Gesú, trovò l'uomo, dal quale erano usciti i demòni, che sedeva ai piedi di Gesú, vestito e sano di mente; e si impaurirono. 36 Quelli che avevano visto, raccontarono loro come l'indemoniato era stato liberato. 37 L'intera popolazione della regione dei Gerasèni pregò Gesú che se ne andasse via da loro; perché erano presi da grande spavento.
Egli, salito sulla barca, se ne tornò indietro. 38 L'uomo dal quale erano usciti i demòni, lo pregava di poter restare con lui, ma Gesú lo rimandò, dicendo: 39 «Torna a casa tua, e racconta le grandi cose che Dio ha fatte per te». Ed egli se ne andò per tutta la città, proclamando tutto quello che Gesú aveva fatto per lui.
Gesú guarisce una donna e risuscita la figlia di Iairo
40 (G)Al suo ritorno, Gesú fu accolto dalla folla, perché tutti lo stavano aspettando.
41 Ecco venire un uomo, di nome Iairo, che era capo della *sinagoga; e, gettatosi ai piedi di Gesú, lo pregava di entrare in casa sua, 42 perché aveva una figlia unica di circa dodici anni, che stava per morire. Or mentre Gesú vi andava, la folla faceva ressa intorno a lui.
43 Una donna, che aveva perdite di sangue da dodici anni [e aveva speso tutti i suoi beni con i medici] senza poter essere guarita da nessuno, 44 si avvicinò di dietro e gli toccò il lembo della veste; e in quell'istante il suo flusso ristagnò. 45 E Gesú domandò: «Chi mi ha toccato?» E siccome tutti negavano, *Pietro e quelli che erano con lui risposero: «Maestro, la folla ti stringe e ti preme». 46 Ma Gesú replicò: «Qualcuno mi ha toccato, perché ho sentito che una potenza è uscita da me». 47 La donna, vedendo che non era rimasta inosservata, venne tutta tremante e, gettatasi ai suoi piedi, dichiarò, in presenza di tutto il popolo, per quale motivo lo aveva toccato e come era stata guarita in un istante. 48 Ma egli le disse: «Figliola, la tua fede ti ha salvata; va' in pace».
49 Mentr'egli parlava ancora, venne uno dalla casa del capo della sinagoga, a dirgli: «Tua figlia è morta; non disturbare piú il Maestro». 50 Ma Gesú, udito ciò, rispose a Iairo: «Non temere; solo abbi fede, e sarà salva». 51 Arrivato alla casa, non permise a nessuno di entrare con lui all'infuori di Pietro, *Giovanni, *Giacomo, il padre e la madre della bambina. 52 Or tutti piangevano e facevano cordoglio per lei. Ma egli disse: «Non piangete, perché non è morta, ma dorme». 53 E ridevano di lui, sapendo che era morta. 54 Ma egli, prendendole la mano, disse ad alta voce: «Bambina, àlzati». 55 Lo spirito di lei ritornò ed ella si alzò subito; Gesú comandò che le dessero da mangiare. 56 E i genitori di lei rimasero sbalorditi; ma egli ordinò loro di non dire a nessuno quello che era avvenuto.

La Nuova Diodati
8 E in seguito avvenne che egli andava attorno per le città e i villaggi, predicando e annunziando la buona novella del regno di Dio; con lui vi erano i dodici,
2 e certe donne, che erano state guarite da spiriti maligni e da infermità: Maria, detta Maddalena, dalla quale erano usciti sette demoni,
3 Giovanna, moglie di Cuza, amministratore di Erode, Susanna e molte altre, le quali lo sostenevano con i loro beni.
4 Ora, mentre si radunava una grande folla ed accorreva a lui gente da ogni città, egli disse in parabola:
5 «Un seminatore uscí a seminare la sua semente; e mentre egli seminava una parte cadde lungo la via, fu calpestata e gli uccelli del cielo la mangiarono.
6 Un'altra parte cadde sulla roccia e, appena germogliata, seccò per mancanza di umidità.
7 Un'altra parte cadde fra le spine; e le spine, cresciute insieme, la soffocarono.
8 Una parte invece cadde in buona terra, germogliò e fruttò il cento per uno». Dette queste cose, esclamò: «Chi ha orecchi da udire, oda!».
9 Allora i suoi discepoli gli domandarono che cosa significasse quella parabola.
10 Ed egli disse: «A voi è dato di conoscere i misteri del regno di Dio; ma agli altri essi sono proposti in parabole, affinché vedendo non vedano e udendo non intendano.
11 Or questo è il significato della parabola: La semente è la parola di Dio.
12 Quelli lungo la strada sono coloro che odono la parola, ma poi viene il diavolo e porta via la parola dal loro cuore, affinché non credano e non siano salvati.
13 Quelli sulla roccia sono coloro che, quando ascoltano, ricevono la parola con gioia; costoro però non hanno radice, credono per un certo tempo, ma al momento della prova, si tirano indietro.
14 E la parte che è caduta fra le spine sono coloro che hanno udito la parola; ma, strada facendo, sono soffocati dalle sollecitudini, dalle ricchezze e dai piaceri di questa vita, e non giungono a maturità.
15 Ma la parte che è caduta in buona terra sono coloro che, dopo aver udita la parola, la ritengono in un cuore onesto e buono e portano frutto con perseveranza».
16 «E nessuno, accesa una lampada, la copre con un vaso o la mette sotto il letto, ma la mette sul candeliere, affinché coloro che entrano vedano la luce.
17 Poiché non vi è nulla di nascosto che non sarà manifestato, né di segreto che non debba essere conosciuto e portato alla luce.
18 Fate dunque attenzione a come ascoltate, perché a chi ha sarà dato, ma a chi non ha sarà tolto anche quello che pensa di avere».
19 Or sua madre e i suoi fratelli vennero da lui, ma non potevano avvicinarlo a causa della folla.
20 E da alcuni gli fu riferito: «Tua madre e i tuoi fratelli sono là fuori e ti vogliono vedere».
21 Ma egli, rispondendo, disse loro: «Mia madre e i miei fratelli sono quelli che odono la parola di Dio e la mettono in pratica».

25 E Gesú disse ai suoi discepoli: «Dov'è la vostra fede?». Ed essi, impauriti, si meravigliavano e si dicevano l'un l'altro: «Chi è mai costui, che comanda anche al vento e all'acqua, e gli ubbidiscono?».
26 Poi navigarono verso la regione dei Gadareni che sta di fronte alla Galilea;
27 e, quando scese a terra, gli venne incontro un uomo di quella città, il quale già da lungo tempo era posseduto da demoni, e non indossava vesti, e non abitava in alcuna casa, ma tra i sepolcri.
28 Quando vide Gesú, lanciò un grido, gli si gettò ai piedi e disse a gran voce: «Che vi è fra me e te, o Gesú, Figlio del Dio Altissimo? Ti prego, non tormentarmi!».
29 Gesú comandava infatti allo spirito immondo di uscire da quell'uomo, perché molte volte se ne era impossessato e, benché fosse stato legato con catene e con ceppi e fosse sorvegliato, egli spezzava i legami ed era spinto dal demone nei deserti.
30 E Gesú lo interrogò, dicendo: «Qual è il tuo nome?». Ed egli disse: «Legione». Perché molti demoni erano entrati in lui.
31 Ed essi lo pregavano che non comandasse loro di andare nell'abisso.
32 Or c'era là un numeroso branco di porci che pascolavano sul monte, e quei demoni lo pregarono che permettesse loro di entrare in quelli. Ed egli lo permise loro.
33 I demoni allora, usciti da quell'uomo, entrarono nei porci, e quel branco si precipitò dal dirupo nel lago ed annegò.
34 E quando videro ciò che era accaduto, quelli che li custodivano fuggirono e andarono a portare la notizia in città e per le campagne.
35 La gente allora uscí per vedere ciò che era accaduto e venne da Gesú, e trovò l'uomo dal quale erano usciti i demoni seduto ai piedi di Gesú, vestito e sano di mente, ed ebbe paura.
36 Or quelli che avevano visto l'accaduto, raccontarono loro come l'indemoniato era stato liberato.
37 Allora tutta la popolazione della regione dei Gadareni, chiese a Gesú di allontanarsi da loro, perché erano in preda a un grande spavento. E Gesú, salito sulla barca, tornò indietro.
38 Intanto l'uomo, da cui erano usciti i demoni, lo pregava di poter restare con lui; ma Gesú lo congedò, dicendo:
39 «Ritorna a casa tua e racconta quali grandi cose Dio ha fatto per te». Ed egli se ne andò per tutta la città proclamando le grandi cose che Gesú aveva fatto per lui.
40 Or avvenne che, quando Gesú fu ritornato, la folla lo accolse perché tutti lo aspettavano.
41 Ed ecco venire un uomo di nome Iairo, che era capo della sinagoga; gettatosi ai piedi di Gesú, lo pregava di andare a casa sua,
42 perché egli aveva una figlia unica di circa dodici anni, che stava per morire. Or mentre vi andava, la folla gli si accalcava attorno.
43 E una donna, che aveva un flusso di sangue da dodici anni ed aveva speso con i medici tutti i suoi beni senza poter essere guarita da alcuno
44 Si avvicinò di dietro e toccò il lembo del suo vestito, e in quell'istante il suo flusso di sangue si arrestò.
45 E Gesú disse: «Chi mi ha toccato?». Siccome tutti lo negavano, Pietro e coloro che erano con lui dissero: «Maestro, le folle ti stringono e ti premono e tu dici: Chi mi ha toccato?».
46 Ma Gesú disse: «Qualcuno mi ha toccato, perché ho sentito che una potenza è uscita da me».
47 Allora la donna, vedendo che non era rimasta inosservata, venne tutta tremante e, gettandosi ai suoi piedi, gli dichiarò in presenza di tutto il popolo per quale motivo lo aveva toccato e come era stata guarita all'istante.
48 Ed egli le disse: «Fatti animo, figliola; la tua fede ti ha guarita; va' in pace!».
49 Mentre egli parlava ancora, venne uno dalla casa del capo della sinagoga, e gli disse: «La tua figlia è morta, non disturbare il maestro».
50 Ma Gesú, udito ciò, gli disse: «Non temere; credi solamente ed ella sarà quanta».
51 Giunto alla casa, non permise ad alcuno di entrare, eccetto Pietro, Giovanni e Giacomo, e il padre e la madre della fanciulla.
52 Or tutti piangevano e facevano cordoglio per lei. Ma egli disse: «Non piangete; ella non è morta, ma dorme».
53 Ed essi lo deridevano, sapendo che era morta.
54 Ma egli, dopo aver messo tutti fuori, le prese la mano ed esclamò dicendo: «Fanciulla, alzati!».
55 E il suo spirito ritornò in lei e subito ella si alzò; Gesú poi comandò che le si desse da mangiare.
56 E i suoi genitori rimasero stupefatti. Ma Gesú raccomandò loro di non dire a nessuno quanto era accaduto.

8 And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,
2 And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
3 And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
4 And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable:
5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.
8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?
10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.
11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
17 For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.
18 Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.
19 Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press.
20 And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.
21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.
22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.
24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.
25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
26 And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.
27 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.
28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.
29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)
30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.
31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.
33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.
34 When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.
35 Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.
37 Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.
38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,
39 Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.
40 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.
41 And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:
42 For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.
43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,
44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.
45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.
47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.
48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
49 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.
50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.
52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.
53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.
54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.
55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.
56 And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.

Some Women Accompany Jesus
8 Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Mag′dalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Jo-an′na, the wife of Chu′za, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them[a] out of their means.
The Parable of the Sower
4 And when a great crowd came together and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6 And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. 8 And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said this, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
The Purpose of the Parables
9 And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, 10 he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. 13 And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. 14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. 15 And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience.

16 “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is hid that shall not be made manifest, nor anything secret that shall not be known and come to light. 18 Take heed then how you hear; for to him who has will more be given, and from him who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”
The True Kindred of Jesus
19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him for the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21 But he said to them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
Jesus Calms a Storm
22 One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a storm of wind came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even wind and water, and they obey him?”
Jesus Heals the Gerasene Demoniac
26 Then they arrived at the country of the Ger′asenes,[b] which is opposite Galilee. 27 And as he stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes, and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me.” 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) 30 Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. 32 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Ger′asenes[c] asked him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.
A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed
40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41 And there came a man named Ja′irus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus’ feet he besought him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.
As he went, the people pressed round him. 43 And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years[d] and could not be healed by any one, 44 came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. 45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter[e] said, “Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!” 46 But Jesus said, “Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me.” 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”
49 While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.” 50 But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well.” 51 And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. 52 And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, “Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.” 55 And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. 56 And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
