3 Era el año quince del reinado de Tiberio, el emperador de Roma. Poncio Pilato era gobernador de Judea; Herodes Antipas gobernaba[a] Galilea; su hermano Felipe gobernaba[b] Iturea y Traconite; y Lisanias gobernaba Abilinia. 2 Anás y Caifás eran los sumos sacerdotes. En ese tiempo, un mensaje de Dios llegó a Juan, hijo de Zacarías, que vivía en el desierto. 3 Entonces Juan fue de un lugar a otro, por ambos lados del río Jordán, predicando que la gente debía ser bautizada para demostrar que se había arrepentido de sus pecados y vuelto a Dios para ser perdonada. 4 Isaías había hablado de Juan cuando dijo:
«Es una voz que clama en el desierto:

Eso no significa nada, porque les digo que Dios puede crear hijos de Abraham de estas mismas piedras. 9 Ahora mismo el hacha del juicio de Dios está lista para cortar las raíces de los árboles. Así es, todo árbol que no produzca buenos frutos será cortado y arrojado al fuego.
10 Las multitudes preguntaron:

11 Juan contestó:
—Si tienes dos camisas, da una a los pobres. Si tienes comida, comparte con los que tienen hambre.
12 Hasta los corruptos cobradores de impuestos vinieron a bautizarse y preguntaron:
—Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer?
13 Él les contestó:
—No recauden más impuestos de lo que el gobierno requiere.
14 —¿Qué debemos hacer nosotros?—preguntaron algunos soldados.
Juan les contestó:
—No extorsionen ni hagan falsas acusaciones, y estén satisfechos con su salario.
15 Todos esperaban que el Mesías viniera pronto, y tenían muchas ganas de saber si Juan era el Mesías. 16 Juan contestó a sus preguntas diciendo: «Yo los bautizo con[d] agua, pero pronto viene alguien que es superior a mí, tan superior que ni siquiera soy digno de ser su esclavo y desatarle las correas de sus sandalias. Él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego.[e] 17 Él está listo para separar el trigo de la paja con su rastrillo. Luego limpiará la zona donde se trilla y juntará el trigo en su granero, pero quemará la paja en un fuego interminable». 18 Juan usó muchas advertencias similares al anunciar la Buena Noticia al pueblo.
19 También Juan criticó públicamente a Herodes Antipas, el gobernador de Galilea,[f] por haberse casado con Herodías, la esposa de su hermano, y por muchas otras injusticias que había cometido. 20 Así que Herodes metió a Juan en la cárcel, agregando a sus muchos pecados uno más.

3 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar - Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being Tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip Tetrarch of Iturea, and of the country of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the Tetrarch of Abilene
2 (when Annas and Caiaphas were the High Priests) - the Word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
3 And he came into all the regions around Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins,
4 as it is written in the Book of the sayings of Isaiah the Prophet, which says, “The voice of him who cries in the wilderness is, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord! Make His paths straight!
5 ‘Every valley shall be filled. And every mountain and hill shall be brought low. And crooked things shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth.
6 ‘And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”
7 Then he said to the people who had come out to be baptized by him, “O generations of vipers! Who has forewarned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 “Therefore, bring forth fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our Father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children of Abraham from these stones!
9 “Now also is the axe laid to the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree which does not bring forth good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire!”
10 Then the people asked him, saying, “What shall we do then?”
11 And he answered, and said to them, “The one having two coats, let him give to the one who has none. And the one who has food, let him do likewise.”
12 Then there came tax collectors to be baptized also, and said to him, “Master, what shall we do?”
13 And he said to them, “Require no more than that which is appointed to you.”
14 The soldiers likewise asked him, saying, “And what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Extort no one, nor accuse anyone falsely. And be content with your wages.”
15 As the people waited expectantly, and everyone wondered in their hearts whether John was the Christ,
16 John answered, and said to them all, “Indeed, I baptize you with water! But One stronger than me comes, Whose sandals I am not worthy to unloose! He will baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire!
17 “His fan is in His hand, and He will make clean his floor, and will gather the wheat into His barn. But the chaff He will burn up with fire that never shall be quenched!”
18 Then, exhorting with many other things, he preached to the people.
19 But when Herod the Tetrarch was rebuked by him (for Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done),
20 he added this above all: that he shut up John in prison.
21 Now it happened that as all the people were baptized, and as Jesus was baptized and prayed, the heaven was opened.
22 And the Holy Ghost came down in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him. And there was a voice from Heaven, saying, “You are My beloved Son. In You I am well pleased.”
23 And Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age - being, as men supposed, the Son of Joseph, who was the son of Heli,
24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Janna, the son of Joseph,

3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(C) was governor of Judea, Herod(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(E) the word of God came to John(F) son of Zechariah(G) in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(H) 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[a](I)
7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(J) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(K) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(L) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(M)
10 “What should we do then?”(N) the crowd asked.
11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(O)

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(Q) he told them.
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(R)—be content with your pay.”
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(S) might possibly be the Messiah.(T) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[b] water.(U) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire.(V) 17 His winnowing fork(W) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(X) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
19 But when John rebuked Herod(Y) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.(Z)
