23 Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry.(A) He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,(B)
the son of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat,
the son of Levi, the son of Melki,
the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos,
the son of Nahum, the son of Esli,

- 3:23 Han var, menade man, son till Josef, son till Eli Släkttavlan i Luk 3:23-38 ger en annan härstamning än den i Matt 1 för Josef, Jesu adoptivfar. Detta förklarades i fornkyrkan på följande sätt: Josefs mors förste man Eli (Luk 3:23) dog barnlös, varpå halvbrodern Jakob (Matt 1:16) tog till sig änkan enligt lagen om leviratäktenskap (5 Mos 25:5f, Luk 20:28). På så sätt blev Jakob fysisk far till Josef medan denne samtidigt räknades som den döde Elis son. En alternativ lösning som föreslagits är att Lukas stamtavla egentligen ger Jesu mor Marias härstamning (eftersom man endast "menade" att Jesus var son till Josef).
