Het lege graf
24 En op de eerste dag van de week[a] gingen ze al vroeg in de morgen naar het graf. Ze namen de zalf-olie mee die ze hadden klaargemaakt. Er gingen nog een paar vrouwen mee. 2 Toen ze bij het graf kwamen, zagen ze dat de steen die voor het graf had gelegen, was weggerold. 3 Toen ze het graf in gingen, zagen ze dat het lichaam van de Heer Jezus er niet in lag. 4 Ze wisten niet wat ze ervan moesten denken. Op dat moment stonden er opeens twee mannen in stralend witte kleren bij hen. 5 Ze schrokken hevig en durfden niet te kijken. Toen zeiden de mannen tegen hen: "Waarom zoeken jullie Hem bij de doden? Hij leeft! 6 Hij is hier niet. Hij is uit de dood opgestaan. Denk aan wat Hij tegen jullie heeft gezegd toen Hij nog in Galilea was. 7 Toen heeft Hij gezegd dat de Mensenzoon door slechte mensen gevangen genomen en gekruisigd zou worden. Maar ook dat Hij op de derde dag weer uit de dood zou opstaan."
8 Toen herinnerden ze zich die woorden weer. 9 Ze gingen weg van het graf en vertelden alles wat er was gebeurd aan de elf leerlingen en aan alle anderen. 10 Die vrouwen waren Maria Magdalena, Johanna, en Maria (de moeder) van Jakobus en nog een paar vrouwen. En ze vertelden het aan de elf leerlingen. 11 Maar die vonden het allemaal onzin en geloofden hen niet. 12 Maar Petrus stond op en liep snel naar het graf. Toen hij zich bukte om naar binnen te kijken, zag hij alleen de linnen doeken liggen. Hij ging weer weg en vroeg zich heel verbaasd af wat er gebeurd zou kunnen zijn.
Jezus ontmoet twee van zijn leerlingen
13 Twee van de leerlingen gingen juist op die dag naar het dorp Emmaüs. Dat ligt op 60 stadiën (18 km) van Jeruzalem. 14 Onderweg spraken ze met elkaar over alles wat er was gebeurd. 15 Terwijl ze daar zo over liepen te praten, kwam Jezus Zelf bij hen. Hij liep met hen mee. 16 Maar het was net alsof er iets met hun ogen was, want ze herkenden Hem niet. 17 Hij vroeg hun: "Waar hebben jullie het over? En waarom kijken jullie zo verdrietig?" 18 Eén van hen, Kleopas, antwoordde: "Bent U dan de enige in Jeruzalem die niet weet wat daar de afgelopen dagen is gebeurd?" 19 Hij vroeg: "Wat dan?" Ze zeiden: "Nou, wat er is gebeurd met Jezus uit Nazaret. Hij was een profeet. Hij deed en zei machtige dingen voor God en alle mensen. 20 De leiders van onze priesters en de leiders van ons volk hebben Hem gevangen genomen, de doodstraf gegeven en gekruisigd. 21 Maar wíj hoopten dat Hij het zou zijn die Israël zou redden. Het is nu al weer drie dagen geleden dat dit allemaal is gebeurd. 22 Maar nu hebben bovendien een paar vrouwen uit onze groep ons laten schrikken. Ze waren vanmorgen vroeg naar het graf gegaan. 23 Maar ze hebben zijn lichaam daar niet gezien. Toen kwamen ze ons ook nog vertellen dat ze engelen hadden gezien. Die engelen hadden gezegd dat Hij leeft. 24 En een paar van ons zijn naar het graf gegaan en zagen dat het waar was wat de vrouwen hadden verteld. Maar Hém hebben ze niet gezien."
25 Toen zei Hij tegen hen: "Wat hebben jullie toch een onverstandig hart en wat begrijpen jullie het toch langzaam. Want jullie geloven niet wat de profeten allemaal hebben gezegd! 26 De Messias móest dit allemaal lijden om zijn hemelse macht en majesteit te verkrijgen." 27 En Hij legde hun uit wat er in de Boeken allemaal over Hem geschreven staat. Hij begon bij Mozes en alle profeten.
28 Ze kwamen bij het dorp waarheen ze op weg waren. Hij deed alsof Hij verder wilde gaan. 29 Maar ze drongen bij Hem aan: "Blijf bij ons, want het wordt al avond. De dag is bijna om." Hij ging met hen mee naar binnen en bleef bij hen. 30 Toen Hij met hen aan tafel zat, nam Hij het brood, zegende het, brak het in stukken en deelde het aan hen uit. 31 Toen was het alsof hun ogen open gingen en ze herkenden Hem. Op dat moment verdween Hij zomaar. 32 En ze zeiden tegen elkaar: "Het was ook net alsof ons hart in brand stond toen Hij onderweg met ons praatte en ons uitlegde wat er in de Boeken staat!" 33 Ze stonden op en gingen onmiddellijk terug naar Jeruzalem.
Jezus ontmoet de andere leerlingen
Ze gingen naar de elf leerlingen en de mensen die bij hen waren. 34 Die zeiden tegen de twee: "De Heer Jezus is echt opgestaan! Simon heeft Hem gezien!" 35 Toen vertelden de twee mannen wat er onderweg was gebeurd, en dat ze Hem hadden herkend toen Hij het brood in stukken brak.
36 Terwijl ze hierover zaten te praten, stond Jezus Zelf opeens bij hen. Hij zei: "Ik wens jullie vrede toe!" 37 Ze schrokken vreselijk en dachten dat ze een geest zagen. 38 Maar Hij zei: "Waarom schrikken jullie zo? Waarom denken jullie dat? 39 Kijk naar mijn handen en voeten. Dan kunnen jullie zien dat IK het Zelf BEN.[b] Voel maar. Een geest heeft geen vlees en botten, maar Ik wel." 40 En Hij liet hun zijn handen en voeten zien. 41 Ze waren zó verbaasd en blij, dat ze het haast niet konden geloven. Daarom zei Hij tegen hen: "Hebben jullie hier iets te eten?" 42 Ze gaven Hem een stuk gebakken vis en wat honing. 43 Hij pakte het aan en ze zagen hoe Hij het op at. 44 Hij zei tegen hen: "Dit is wat Ik tegen jullie heb gezegd toen Ik nog bij jullie was. Alles wat er over Mij is opgeschreven in de Boeken van Mozes en van de profeten en in de Psalmen, moest gebeuren." 45 Toen zorgde Hij ervoor dat ze eindelijk de Boeken begrepen.
Jezus' opdracht aan zijn leerlingen
46 En Jezus zei tegen hen: "Het staat ook in de Boeken dat de Messias moest lijden. En dat Hij op de derde dag moest opstaan uit de dood. 47 Er staat ook dat namens Hem aan alle volken verteld moet worden dat ze moeten gaan leven zoals God het wil. En dat de mensen vergeving kunnen krijgen voor hun ongehoorzaamheid aan God. Jullie moeten beginnen in Jeruzalem. 48 Vertel alles wat jullie gezien en gehoord hebben. 49 En Ik zal jullie geven wat de Vader heeft beloofd. Maar jullie moeten in de stad blijven, totdat jullie kracht uit de hemel hebben gekregen."[c]
50 Hij nam hen mee naar buiten tot bij Betanië. 51 Hij hief zijn handen op en zegende hen. En terwijl Hij hen zegende, ging Hij bij hen vandaan, naar de hemel. 52 Ze aanbaden Hem en helemaal blij gingen ze naar Jeruzalem terug. 53 En ze waren aldoor in de tempel God aan het prijzen.

- Lukas 24:39 Jezus gebruikt hier de woorden IK BEN. In het Grieks staat daar 'ego eimi,' wat veel nadrukkelijker is dan de gewone manier om 'ik ben...' te zeggen. In het oude testament maakt God Zich met de naam IK BEN aan Mozes bekend. Lees Exodus 3:14. Door deze naam te gebruiken geeft Jezus dus aan dat Hijzelf God is. Vergelijk met Matteüs 14:27.
- Lukas 24:49 Met de 'kracht uit de hemel' bedoelt Jezus de Heilige Geest. Lees hierover in Handelingen 2.

24 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
8 And they remembered his words,
9 And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
10 It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
11 And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.
12 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;
23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.
25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.
29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.
30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
36 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.
41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.
43 And he took it, and did eat before them.
44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 And ye are witnesses of these things.
49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
51 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.
52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
53 And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.

On the Road to Emmaus
13 That very day (S)two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 (T)But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was (U)a prophet (V)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and (W)how our chief priests and (X)rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was (Y)the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now (Z)the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. Jesus Appears to His Disciples
36 As they were talking about these things, (AW)Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were (AX)startled and (AY)frightened and (AZ)thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. (BA)Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, (BB)he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved (BC)for joy and were marveling, (BD)he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,[b] 43 and he took it and ate before them.
44 Then he said to them, (BE)“These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, (BF)that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then (BG)he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus (BH)it is written, (BI)that the Christ should suffer and on the third day (BJ)rise from the dead, 47 and that (BK)repentance for[c] the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed (BL)in his name (BM)to all nations, (BN)beginning from Jerusalem. 48 (BO)You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending (BP)the promise of my Father upon you. The Ascension
50 And (BT)he led them out as far as (BU)Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, (BV)he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they (BW)worshiped him and (BX)returned to Jerusalem (BY)with great joy, 53 and (BZ)were continually in the temple (CA)blessing God.
