耶稣在彼拉多面前受审(A)
23 众人都起来，把耶稣解到彼拉多面前。 2 他们开始控告他说：“我们见这人煽惑我们的国民，禁止我们纳税给凯撒，并说自己是基督，是王。” 3 彼拉多问耶稣：“你是犹太人的王吗？”耶稣回答：“是你说的。” 4 彼拉多对祭司长们和众人说：“我查不出这人有什么罪来。” 5 但他们越发竭力地说：“他煽动百姓，在犹太全地传道，从加利利起，直到这里了。”
耶稣在希律面前受审
6 彼拉多一听见，就问：“这人是加利利人吗？” 7 既知道耶稣属希律所管，彼拉多就把他送到希律那里去。那时希律正在耶路撒冷。 8 希律看见耶稣就非常高兴；因为听见过他的事，早就想要见他，并且指望看他行些神迹， 9 于是问他许多的话，耶稣却一言不答。 10 那些祭司长和文士都站着，竭力控告他。 11 希律和他的士兵就藐视耶稣，戏弄他，给他穿上华丽的衣服，把他送回彼拉多那里去。 12 从前希律和彼拉多彼此有仇，在那一天竟成了朋友。
耶稣被判死刑(B)
13 彼拉多传齐了众祭司长、官长和百姓， 14 对他们说：“你们解这人到我这里，说他是煽惑百姓的。看哪，我也曾在你们面前审问他，并没有查出这人犯过你们控告他的任何罪； 15 就是希律也是如此，所以把他送回来。可见他没有做什么该死的事。 16 所以，我要责打他，把他释放。”[a] 18 众人却一齐喊着说：“除掉这个人！释放巴拉巴给我们！” 19 这巴拉巴是因在城里作乱和杀人而下在监里的。 20 彼拉多愿意释放耶稣，就再次向他们讲话。 21 无奈他们喊着说：“把他钉十字架！把他钉十字架！” 22 彼拉多第三次对他们说：“为什么呢？这人做了什么恶事呢？我并没有查出他有什么该死的罪来。所以，我要责打他，把他释放。” 23 他们大声催逼彼拉多，要求他把耶稣钉十字架；他们的声音终于得胜。 24 彼拉多这才照他们的要求定案； 25 又把他们所要求的那因作乱和杀人而下在监里的人释放了，而把耶稣交给他们，随他们的意思处置。
耶稣被钉十字架(C)
26 他们把耶稣带去的时候，有一个古利奈人西门从乡下来，他们就拿住他，把十字架搁在他身上，叫他背着跟在耶稣后面。 27 有许多百姓跟随耶稣，其中有好些妇女为他号啕痛哭。 28 耶稣转身对她们说：“耶路撒冷的女子，不要为我哭，要为你们自己和你们的儿女哭。 29 因为日子将到，人要说：‘不生育的、未曾怀孕的，和未曾哺乳孩子的有福了！’
30 那时，人要向大山说：
‘倒在我们身上！’
向小山说：
‘遮盖我们！’
31 他们若在树木青绿的时候做这些事，那么在枯干的时候将会怎么样呢？”
32 另外有两个犯人也被带来和耶稣一同处死。 33 到了一个地方，名叫髑髅地，他们就在那里把耶稣钉在十字架上，又钉了两个犯人：一个在右边，一个在左边。〔 34 这时，耶稣说：“父啊！赦免他们，因为他们所做的，他们不知道。”[b]〕士兵就抽签分他的衣服。 35 百姓站在那里观看。官长也嘲笑他，说：“他救了别人，他若是基督，是 神所拣选的，救救他自己吧！” 36 士兵也戏弄他，上前拿醋送给他喝， 37 说：“你若是犹太人的王，救救你自己吧！” 38 在耶稣上方有一个牌子写着：“这是犹太人的王。”
39 同钉的犯人中有一个讥笑他，说：“你不是基督吗？救救你自己和我们吧！” 40 另一个就应声责备他，说：“你是一样受刑的，还不怕 神吗？ 41 我们是应得的，因为我们是自作自受，但这个人没有做过一件不对的事。” 42 他对耶稣说：“耶稣啊，你进入你国的时候，求你记念我。” 43 耶稣对他说：“我实在告诉你，今日你要同我在乐园里了。”[c]
耶稣之死(D)
44 那时大约是正午，全地都黑暗了，直到下午三点钟， 45 太阳变黑了，殿的幔子从当中裂为两半。 46 耶稣大声喊着说：“父啊，我将我的灵交在你手里！”他说了这话，气就断了。 47 百夫长看见所发生的事，就归荣耀给 神，说：“这人真是个义人！” 48 聚集观看这事的众人，见了所发生的事，都捶着胸回去了。 49 所有与耶稣熟悉的人，和从加利利跟着他来的妇女们，都远远地站着，看这些事。
耶稣的安葬(E)
50 有一个人名叫约瑟，是个议员，为人善良正直， 51 却没有附从别人的所谋所为。他是犹太的亚利马太城人，素常盼望着 神的国。 52 这人去见彼拉多，请求要耶稣的身体。 53 他把耶稣的身体取下来，用细麻布裹好，安放在凿岩而成的坟墓里；那坟墓从来没有葬过人。 54 那日是预备日，安息日快到了。 55 那些从加利利和耶稣同来的妇女跟在后面，看见了坟墓和他的身体怎样安放。 56 她们就回去，预备了香料香膏。在安息日，她们遵照诫命安息了。

Jesús ante Pilato
23 Toda la asamblea de ellos se levantó, y llevaron a Jesús ante Pilato(A). 2 (B)Y comenzaron a acusar a Jesús, diciendo: «Hemos hallado que este pervierte a nuestra nación(C), prohibiendo pagar[a] impuesto a César(D), y diciendo que Él mismo es Cristo[b], un Rey».
3 Pilato preguntó a Jesús: «¿Eres Tú el Rey de los judíos?». «Tú lo dices(E)», le respondió Jesús. 4 Entonces Pilato dijo a los principales sacerdotes y a la multitud: «No encuentro delito en este hombre(F)». 5 Pero ellos insistían, diciendo: «Él alborota al pueblo, enseñando por toda Judea, comenzando desde Galilea(G) hasta aquí».
6 Cuando Pilato oyó esto, preguntó si el hombre era galileo. 7 Al saber que Jesús pertenecía a la jurisdicción de Herodes, lo remitió a Herodes(H), que también estaba en Jerusalén en aquellos[c] días.
Jesús ante Herodes
8 Al ver a Jesús, Herodes se alegró en gran manera, pues hacía mucho tiempo que lo quería ver(I) por lo que había oído hablar de Él, y esperaba ver alguna señal[d] que Él hiciera. 9 Lo interrogó extensamente[e], pero Jesús nada le respondió(J). 10 Los principales sacerdotes y los escribas también estaban allí, y lo acusaban con vehemencia. 11 Entonces Herodes, con sus soldados, después de tratar a Jesús con desprecio y burlarse de Él, lo vistieron con un espléndido manto(K). Después Herodes lo envió de nuevo a Pilato. 12 Aquel mismo día Herodes y Pilato(L) se hicieron amigos, pues antes habían estado enemistados el uno con el otro.
Pilato condena a Jesús
13 Pilato convocó a los principales sacerdotes, a los gobernantes(M) y al pueblo, 14 y les dijo: «Me han presentado a este hombre como uno que incita al pueblo a la rebelión(N), pero habiéndolo interrogado yo delante de ustedes, no he hallado ningún delito en este hombre(O) de las acusaciones que hacen contra Él. 15 Ni tampoco Herodes(P), pues nos lo ha remitido de nuevo; ya que nada ha hecho[f] que merezca la muerte. 16 Por tanto, lo voy a castigar y después, lo soltaré(Q)». 17 [g]Y tenía obligación de soltarles un preso en cada fiesta.
18 Pero todos ellos gritaron a una: «¡(R)Fuera con este, y suéltanos a Barrabás!». 19 Barrabás había sido echado en la cárcel por un levantamiento ocurrido en la ciudad, y por homicidio.
20 Pilato, queriendo soltar a Jesús, les volvió a hablar, 21 pero ellos continuaban gritando: «¡Crucifícalo! ¡Crucifícalo!». 22 Y él les dijo por tercera vez: «¿Por qué? ¿Qué mal ha hecho Este? No he hallado en Él ningún delito digno de muerte; por tanto, lo castigaré y lo soltaré(S)». 23 Pero ellos insistían, pidiendo a grandes voces que fuera crucificado, y sus voces comenzaron a predominar. 24 Entonces Pilato decidió[h] que se les concediera su demanda. 25 Y soltó al que ellos pedían, al que había sido echado en la cárcel por insurrección y homicidio, pero entregó a Jesús a la voluntad de ellos.
Jesús se dirige al Calvario
26 (T)Cuando lo llevaban, tomaron a un tal Simón de Cirene que venía del campo y le pusieron la cruz encima para que la llevara detrás de Jesús(U).
27 Y seguía a Jesús una gran multitud del pueblo y de mujeres que lloraban[i] y se lamentaban(V) por Él. 28 Pero Jesús, volviéndose a ellas, dijo: «Hijas de Jerusalén, no lloren por Mí; lloren más bien por ustedes mismas y por sus hijos. 29 Porque vienen días en que dirán: “Dichosas las estériles, los vientres que nunca concibieron y los senos que nunca criaron(W)”. 30 Entonces comenzarán a decir a los montes: “Caigan sobre nosotros”; y a los collados: “Cúbrannos(X)”. 31 Porque si en el árbol verde hacen esto, ¿qué sucederá en el seco?».
32 También llevaban a otros dos, que eran malhechores, para ser muertos con Él(Y).
La crucifixión
33 (Z)Cuando llegaron al lugar llamado «La Calavera[j]», crucificaron allí a Jesús y a los malhechores, uno a la derecha y otro a la izquierda. 34 Y Jesús decía: «Padre(AA), perdónalos, porque no saben lo que hacen[k]». Y los soldados echaron suertes, repartiéndose entre sí Sus vestidos(AB).
35 El pueblo estaba allí mirando; y aun los gobernantes(AC) se burlaban de Él, diciendo: «A otros salvó; que se salve Él mismo(AD) si Este es el Cristo[l] de Dios, Su Escogido». 36 Los soldados también se burlaban de Jesús, y se acercaban a Él y le ofrecían vinagre(AE), 37 diciendo: «Si Tú eres el Rey de los judíos, sálvate a Ti mismo(AF)».
38 Había también una inscripción sobre Él[m], que decía: «ESTE ES EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS(AG)».
Los dos malhechores
39 Uno de los malhechores que estaban colgados allí le lanzaba insultos(AH), diciendo: «¿No eres Tú el Cristo? ¡Sálvate a Ti mismo(AI) y a nosotros!».
40 Pero el otro le contestó, y reprendiéndolo, dijo: «¿Ni siquiera temes tú a Dios a pesar de que estás bajo la misma condena? 41 Nosotros a la verdad, justamente, porque recibimos lo que merecemos por nuestros hechos[n]; pero este nada malo ha hecho». 42 Y añadió: «Jesús, acuérdate de mí cuando vengas en[o] Tu reino». 43 Entonces Jesús le dijo: «En verdad te digo: hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso(AJ)».
Muerte de Jesús
44 (AK)Era ya como la hora sexta[p], cuando descendieron[q] tinieblas sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora novena[r](AL), 45 al eclipsarse el sol. El velo del templo se rasgó en dos[s](AM). 46 Y Jesús, clamando a gran voz, dijo: «Padre, en Tus manos encomiendo Mi espíritu(AN)». Habiendo dicho esto, expiró(AO).
47 Al ver el centurión lo que había sucedido(AP), glorificaba a Dios(AQ), diciendo: «Ciertamente, este hombre era inocente[t]». 48 Todas las multitudes que se habían reunido para presenciar este espectáculo, al observar lo que había acontecido, se volvieron golpeándose el pecho(AR). 49 Pero todos los conocidos de Jesús y las mujeres que lo habían acompañado desde Galilea, estaban a cierta distancia viendo estas cosas(AS).
Sepultura de Jesús
50 (AT)Había un hombre llamado José, miembro del Concilio[u](AU), varón bueno y justo, 51 el cual no había estado de acuerdo con el plan y el proceder de los demás[v], que era de Arimatea, ciudad de los judíos, y que esperaba el reino de Dios(AV). 52 Este fue a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús, 53 y bajándolo, lo envolvió en un lienzo de lino, y lo puso en un sepulcro excavado en la roca donde nadie había sido puesto todavía. 54 Era el día de la preparación(AW), y estaba para comenzar el día de reposo.
55 Y las mujeres que habían venido con Jesús desde Galilea(AX) siguieron detrás, y vieron el sepulcro y cómo fue colocado Su cuerpo. 56 Cuando regresaron, prepararon especias aromáticas y perfumes(AY).
Y en el día de reposo descansaron según el mandamiento(AZ).

23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(A) 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(B) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(C) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(D)
3 So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(E)
5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(F) and has come all the way here.”
6 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(G) 7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(H) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(I) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. 9 He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(J) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(K) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(L)—before this they had been enemies.
13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(M) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(N) and then release him.” [17] [a]
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(O) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(P)
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
The Crucifixion of Jesus(Q)
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(R) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(S) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(T) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(U) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(V) 30 Then
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(X)
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(Y) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(Z) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[c](AA) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AB)
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(AC) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(AD)
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(AE) They offered him wine vinegar(AF) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(AG) save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(AH)
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(AI)
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(AJ)
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[d]”(AK)
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(AL)
The Death of Jesus(AM)
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(AN) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(AO) was torn in two.(AP) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(AQ) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[e](AR) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(AS)
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(AT) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(AU) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(AV) stood at a distance,(AW) watching these things.
The Burial of Jesus(AX)
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(AY) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(AZ) and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(BA) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(BB) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(BC)

2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.
3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.
4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.
7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.
9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.
10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.
11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.
12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.
13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:
15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.
16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.
17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)
18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:
19 (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)
20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.
21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.
22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.
23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.
24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
25 And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.
28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.
30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.
31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?
32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.
33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.
36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,
37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, This Is The King Of The Jews.
39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.
44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.
48 And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.
49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
50 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:
51 (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.
52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate(A)
23 Then (B)the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to (C)Pilate. 2 And they began to (D)accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow (E)perverting [a]the nation, and (F)forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying (G)that He Himself is Christ, a King.”
3 (H)Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”
4 So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, (I)“I find no fault in this Man.”
5 But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from (J)Galilee to this place.”
Jesus Faces Herod
6 When Pilate heard [b]of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. 7 And as soon as he knew that He belonged to (K)Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. 8 Now when Herod saw Jesus, (L)he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because (M)he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. 9 Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him (N)nothing. 10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. 11 (O)Then Herod, with his [c]men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 That very day (P)Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.
Taking the Place of Barabbas(Q)
13 (R)Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, (S)“You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, (T)having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; 15 no, neither did Herod, for [d]I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. 16 (U)I will therefore chastise Him and release Him” 17 (V)(for[e] it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast).
18 And (W)they all cried out at once, saying, “Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19 who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder.
20 Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. 21 But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”
22 Then he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”
23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men [f]and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 So (X)Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. 25 (Y)And he released [g]to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
The King on a Cross(Z)
26 (AA)Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.
27 And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 (AB)For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin (AC)‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ 31 (AD)For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”
32 (AE)There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. 33 And (AF)when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 [h]Then Jesus said, “Father, (AG)forgive them, for (AH)they do not know what they do.”
And (AI)they divided His garments and cast lots. 35 And (AJ)the people stood looking on. But even the (AK)rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”
36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him (AL)sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”
38 (AM)And an inscription also was [i]written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:
THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39 (AN)Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, [j]“If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”
40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done (AO)nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said [k]to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in (AP)Paradise.”
Jesus Dies on the Cross(AQ)
44 (AR)Now it [l]was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 Then the sun was [m]darkened, and (AS)the veil of the temple was torn in [n]two. 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, (AT)‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” (AU)Having said this, He breathed His last.
47 (AV)So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”
48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. 49 (AW)But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(AX)
50 (AY)Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. 51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, (AZ)who[o] himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 (BA)Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. 54 That day was (BB)the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.
55 And the women (BC)who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and (BD)they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 Then they returned and (BE)prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath (BF)according to the commandment.
