23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(A) 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(B) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(C) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(D)
3 So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(E)
5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(F) and has come all the way here.”
6 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(G) 7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(H) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(I) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. 9 He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(J) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(K) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(L)—before this they had been enemies.
13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(M) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(N) and then release him.” [17] [a]
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(O) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(P)
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
The Crucifixion of Jesus(Q)
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(R) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(S) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(T) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(U) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(V) 30 Then
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(X)
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(Y) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(Z) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[c](AA) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AB)
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(AC) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(AD)
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(AE) They offered him wine vinegar(AF) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(AG) save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(AH)
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(AI)
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(AJ)
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[d]”(AK)
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(AL)
The Death of Jesus(AM)
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(AN) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(AO) was torn in two.(AP) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(AQ) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[e](AR) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(AS)
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(AT) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(AU) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(AV) stood at a distance,(AW) watching these things.
The Burial of Jesus(AX)
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(AY) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(AZ) and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(BA) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(BB) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(BC)

23 En ese momento, toda la asamblea se levantó y lo llevaron ante Pilato.
2 Comenzaron a acusarlo, diciendo:
―Encontramos a este hombre alborotando a nuestra nación. Está en contra de que se paguen impuestos al emperador y asegura que él es el Cristo, el rey.
3 Pilato le preguntó a Jesús:
―¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos?
Él respondió:
―Tú mismo lo dices.
4 Entonces Pilato le dijo a los jefes de los sacerdotes y a la gente:
―No encuentro nada que haga culpable a este hombre.
5 Pero ellos seguían insistiendo:
―Con sus enseñanzas alborota al pueblo por toda Judea. Comenzó en Galilea y ya llegó hasta aquí.
6 Cuando Pilato oyó esto, preguntó si el hombre era de Galilea.
7 Al enterarse de que pertenecía a la jurisdicción de Herodes, se lo mandó a él, pues en aquellos días también Herodes estaba en Jerusalén.
8 Cuando Herodes vio a Jesús, se puso muy contento, porque ya hacía tiempo que quería verlo. Había oído hablar de él y esperaba verlo hacer algún milagro. 9 Le hizo muchas preguntas pero Jesús no le contestó nada. 10 También estaban allí los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley y lo acusaban con insistencia. 11 Entonces Herodes y sus soldados lo trataron con desprecio y, para burlarse de él, le pusieron un manto lujoso. Después lo mandaron de vuelta a Pilato. 12 Herodes y Pilato antes no se llevaban bien, pero desde ese mismo día se hicieron amigos.
13 Pilato reunió a los jefes de los sacerdotes, a los gobernantes y al pueblo, 14 y les dijo:
―Ustedes me trajeron a este hombre acusado de incitar al pueblo a la rebelión. Pero ya lo he interrogado delante de ustedes y no lo encuentro culpable de lo que ustedes lo acusan. 15 Herodes tampoco lo encontró culpable, y por eso nos lo devolvió. Este hombre no ha hecho nada que merezca la muerte. 16 Por lo tanto, ordenaré que lo azoten y después lo dejaré libre. 17 Ahora bien, durante la fiesta tenía la obligación de soltarles un preso. 18 Pero todos gritaban a una voz:
―¡Llévate a ese! ¡Deja libre a Barrabás!
19 Barrabás estaba preso por una rebelión ocurrida en la ciudad y por haber matado a alguien. 20 Pilato quería dejar libre a Jesús y por eso habló con el pueblo otra vez. 21 Pero la gente gritaba:
―¡Crucifícalo! ¡Crucifícalo!
22 Entonces él les dijo por tercera vez:
―Pero, ¿qué delito ha cometido este hombre? No lo encuentro culpable de nada que merezca la pena de muerte. Voy a ordenar que lo azoten y después lo dejaré libre.
23 Pero ellos siguieron insistiendo a gritos que lo crucificara, y por fin lo consiguieron. 24 Pilato les concedió lo que pedían. 25 Ordenó que dejaran libre al hombre que estaba preso por rebelde y asesino, y les entregó a Jesús para que hicieran con él lo que quisieran.
La crucifixión
26 Cuando se lo llevaban, obligaron a un hombre de Cirene, llamado Simón, a que fuera detrás de Jesús cargando la cruz. Este hombre volvía en ese momento del campo. 27 Mucha gente del pueblo y muchas mujeres lo seguían. Ellas lloraban por él y se golpeaban el pecho. 28 Jesús se volvió hacía ellas y les dijo:
―Hijas de Jerusalén, no lloren por mí. Lloren más bien por ustedes y por sus hijos. 29 Porque se acerca el día en que dirán: “¡Dichosas las mujeres estériles, que nunca dieron a luz ni tuvieron que amamantar hijos!”. 30 Entonces comenzarán a decir a las montañas: “¡Caigan sobre nosotros!”, y a las colinas: “¡Cúbrannos!”, 31 pues si cuando el árbol está verde hacen esto, ¿qué no harán cuando esté seco?
32 Llevaban también con él, para matarlos, a otros dos que eran criminales. 33 Cuando llegaron al lugar llamado la Calavera, lo crucificaron. También a los criminales, uno a la derecha de él y otro a su izquierda.
34 Jesús dijo:
―Padre, perdónalos porque no saben lo que hacen.
Mientras, echaban suertes para ver quién se quedaba con la ropa de Jesús. 35 La gente se quedó allí para mirar; y por su parte, los gobernantes se burlaban de él. Decían:
―Si es el Cristo de Dios, el Escogido, que se salve a sí mismo como salvó a otros.
36 Los soldados también se burlaban de él. Se acercaron para ofrecerle vinagre, 37 y le dijeron:
—Si eres el rey de los judíos, sálvate a ti mismo.
38 Sobre él había un letrero que decía: «este es el rey de los judíos».
39 Uno de los criminales que estaban allí colgados también empezó a insultarlo:
―¿Acaso, no eres tú el Cristo? ¡Sálvate a ti mismo y sálvanos a nosotros también!
40 Pero el otro criminal lo reprendió:
―¿Ni siquiera tienes temor de Dios aunque estés sufriendo el mismo castigo?
41 Nosotros merecemos este castigo y sufrimos a causa de nuestros delitos; pero este no ha hecho nada malo.
42 Luego le dijo:
―Jesús, acuérdate de mí cuando vengas en tu reino.
43 Jesús le contestó:
―Te aseguro que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso.
Muerte de Jesús
44 Desde el mediodía y hasta las tres de la tarde, toda la tierra quedó a oscuras, 45 pues el sol se ocultó. Y la cortina del templo se partió en dos. 46 Entonces Jesús gritó con fuerza:
―¡Padre, en tus manos encomiendo mi espíritu!
Y después de decir esto, murió.
47 El capitán romano, al ver lo que había sucedido, alabó a Dios y dijo:
―En verdad, este hombre era justo.
48 Los que estaban allí reunidos para presenciar ese espectáculo, al ver lo que pasaba, se fueron de allí golpeándose el pecho. 49 Pero todos los conocidos de Jesús y las mujeres que lo habían seguido desde Galilea, se quedaron mirando desde lejos.
Sepultura de Jesús
50 Había un hombre llamado José que era bueno y justo. Era miembro del Consejo, 51 pero no había estado de acuerdo con la decisión y la conducta de los demás. Procedía del pueblo de Arimatea, en la región de Judea, y esperaba el reino de Dios. 52 Este fue ante Pilato para pedirle el cuerpo de Jesús. 53 Después de bajarlo, lo envolvió en una sábana de lino y lo puso en un sepulcro cavado en una roca. Ese sepulcro nunca antes lo habían usado.
54 Era el día en que se preparaban para el descanso del sábado, que ya estaba a punto de comenzar. 55 Las mujeres que habían seguido a Jesús desde Galilea acompañaron a José hasta el sepulcro y vieron cómo colocaba el cuerpo. 56 Luego regresaron a su casa y prepararon especias aromáticas y perfumes. Después descansaron el sábado, como lo manda la ley.

Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate(A)
23 Then (B)the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to (C)Pilate. 2 And they began to (D)accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow (E)perverting [a]the nation, and (F)forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying (G)that He Himself is Christ, a King.”
3 (H)Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”
4 So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, (I)“I find no fault in this Man.”
5 But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from (J)Galilee to this place.”
Jesus Faces Herod
6 When Pilate heard [b]of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. 7 And as soon as he knew that He belonged to (K)Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. 8 Now when Herod saw Jesus, (L)he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because (M)he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. 9 Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him (N)nothing. 10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. 11 (O)Then Herod, with his [c]men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 That very day (P)Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.
Taking the Place of Barabbas(Q)
13 (R)Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, (S)“You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, (T)having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; 15 no, neither did Herod, for [d]I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. 16 (U)I will therefore chastise Him and release Him” 17 (V)(for[e] it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast).
18 And (W)they all cried out at once, saying, “Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19 who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder.
20 Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. 21 But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”
22 Then he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”
23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men [f]and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 So (X)Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. 25 (Y)And he released [g]to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
The King on a Cross(Z)
26 (AA)Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.
27 And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 (AB)For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin (AC)‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ 31 (AD)For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”
32 (AE)There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. 33 And (AF)when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 [h]Then Jesus said, “Father, (AG)forgive them, for (AH)they do not know what they do.”
And (AI)they divided His garments and cast lots. 35 And (AJ)the people stood looking on. But even the (AK)rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”
36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him (AL)sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”
38 (AM)And an inscription also was [i]written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:
THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39 (AN)Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, [j]“If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”
40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done (AO)nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said [k]to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in (AP)Paradise.”
Jesus Dies on the Cross(AQ)
44 (AR)Now it [l]was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 Then the sun was [m]darkened, and (AS)the veil of the temple was torn in [n]two. 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, (AT)‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” (AU)Having said this, He breathed His last.
47 (AV)So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”
48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. 49 (AW)But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(AX)
50 (AY)Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. 51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, (AZ)who[o] himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 (BA)Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. 54 That day was (BB)the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.
55 And the women (BC)who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and (BD)they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 Then they returned and (BE)prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath (BF)according to the commandment.
