Chapter 17
Temptations to Sin. 1 (A)He said to his disciples, “Things that cause sin will inevitably occur, but woe to the person through whom they occur. 2 It would be better for him if a millstone were put around his neck and he be thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. 3 Be on your guard![a] If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.(B) 4 And if he wrongs you seven times in one day and returns to you seven times saying, ‘I am sorry,’ you should forgive him.”(C)
Saying of Faith. 5 And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” 6 The Lord replied, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to [this] mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.(D)
Attitude of a Servant.[b] 7 “Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’? 8 Would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished’? 9 Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? 10 So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’”
The Cleansing of Ten Lepers.[c] 11 As he continued his journey to Jerusalem,(E) he traveled through Samaria and Galilee.[d] 12 As he was entering a village, ten lepers met [him]. They stood at a distance from him 13 and raised their voice, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!”(F) 14 And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.”[e] As they were going they were cleansed.(G) 15 And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; 16 and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? 18 Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” 19 Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”(H)
The Coming of the Kingdom of God. 20 [f]Asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he said in reply, “The coming of the kingdom of God cannot be observed,(I) 21 [g]and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or, ‘There it is.’(J) For behold, the kingdom of God is among you.”
The Day of the Son of Man. 22 Then he said to his disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. 23 There will be those who will say to you, ‘Look, there he is,’ [or] ‘Look, here he is.’ Do not go off, do not run in pursuit.(K) 24 For just as lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be [in his day].(L) 25 But first he must suffer greatly and be rejected by this generation.(M) 26 As it was in the days of Noah,(N) so it will be in the days of the Son of Man; 27 they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage up to the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 (O)Similarly, as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building; 29 on the day when Lot left Sodom, fire and brimstone rained from the sky to destroy them all. 30 So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 31 (P)On that day, a person who is on the housetop and whose belongings are in the house must not go down to get them, and likewise a person in the field must not return to what was left behind.(Q) 32 Remember the wife of Lot. 33 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it.(R) 34 I tell you, on that night there will be two people in one bed; one will be taken, the other left. 35 (S)And there will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken, the other left.” [36 ][h] 37 They said to him in reply, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures will gather.”(T)

- 17:3 Be on your guard: the translation takes Lk 17:3a as the conclusion to the saying on scandal in Lk 17:1–2. It is not impossible that it should be taken as the beginning of the saying on forgiveness in Lk 17:3b–4.
- 17:7–10 These sayings of Jesus, peculiar to Luke, which continue his response to the apostles’ request to increase their faith (Lk 17:5–6), remind them that Christian disciples can make no claim on God’s graciousness; in fulfilling the exacting demands of discipleship, they are only doing their duty.
- 17:11–19 This incident recounting the thankfulness of the cleansed Samaritan leper is narrated only in Luke’s gospel and provides an instance of Jesus holding up a non-Jew (Lk 17:18) as an example to his Jewish contemporaries (cf. Lk 10:33 where a similar purpose is achieved in the story of the good Samaritan). Moreover, it is the faith in Jesus manifested by the foreigner that has brought him salvation (Lk 17:19; cf. the similar relationship between faith and salvation in Lk 7:50; 8:48, 50).
- 17:11 Through Samaria and Galilee: or, “between Samaria and Galilee.”
- 17:14 See note on Lk 5:14.
- 17:20–37 To the question of the Pharisees about the time of the coming of God’s kingdom, Jesus replies that the kingdom is among you (Lk 17:20–21). The emphasis has thus been shifted from an imminent observable coming of the kingdom to something that is already present in Jesus’ preaching and healing ministry. Luke has also appended further traditional sayings of Jesus about the unpredictable suddenness of the day of the Son of Man, and assures his readers that in spite of the delay of that day (Lk 12:45), it will bring judgment unexpectedly on those who do not continue to be vigilant.
- 17:21 Among you: the Greek preposition translated as among can also be translated as “within.” In the light of other statements in Luke’s gospel about the presence of the kingdom (see Lk 10:9, 11; 11:20) “among” is to be preferred.
- 17:36 The inclusion of Lk 17:36, “There will be two men in the field; one will be taken, the other left behind,” in some Western manuscripts appears to be a scribal assimilation to Mt 24:40.

17 Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!
2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.
3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.
4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
7 But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?
8 And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink?
9 Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.
10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
11 And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.
12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.
17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?
18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
22 And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.
23 And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them.
24 For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.
25 But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.
26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.
28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
31 In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.
32 Remember Lot's wife.
33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.
34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
37 And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.

17 Jesus sa till sina lärjungar: ”Det är oundvikligt att förförelser kommer, men ve den genom vilken de kommer! 2 Det skulle vara bättre för honom att bli kastad i havet med en stor sten runt halsen, än att han ska kunna förföra någon av dessa små. 3 Var på er vakt!
Om din medmänniska syndar, så tillrättavisa henne, och förlåt henne om hon ångrar sig. 4 Även om hon syndar mot dig sju[a] gånger om dagen och sju gånger kommer tillbaka och ångrar sig, så ska du förlåta henne.”
5 Apostlarna sa till Herren: ”Ge oss mer tro!”
6 Herren svarade: ”Om ni hade tro som ett senapsfrö, skulle ni kunna säga till mullbärsträdet där borta: ’Ryck upp dig själv med rötterna och kasta dig i havet!’ Och det skulle lyda er.
Tjänaren som gör sin plikt
7 Om någon av er har en tjänare som kommer hem efter att ha plöjt på åkern eller vallat fåren, inte säger ni då till honom: ’Sätt dig genast ned vid bordet och ät!’ 8 Nej, ni säger: ’Gör i ordning maten åt mig, fäst upp dina kläder och passa upp mig medan jag äter. Sedan kan du själv äta och dricka.’ 9 Man tackar väl inte tjänaren för att han gjorde det han fick order om? 10 Detsamma gäller er. När ni gjort allt ni fått befallning om, ska ni säga: ’Vi är bara enkla tjänare, vi har bara gjort vår plikt.’ ”
Jesus botar tio spetälska
11 På sin fortsatta vandring mot Jerusalem gick Jesus längs gränsen mellan Galileen och Samarien. 12 Där gick han in i en by, och då kom tio spetälska emot honom. De stannade en bit bort 13 och ropade: ”Jesus, Mästare, förbarma dig över oss!”
14 Då såg han på dem och sa: ”Gå och visa upp er för prästerna!”[b] Och medan de var på väg dit blev de rena.
15 En av dem kom tillbaka till Jesus när han såg att han blivit frisk, och han ropade högt och hyllade Gud. 16 Sedan kastade han sig ner framför Jesus med ansiktet mot marken och tackade honom. Den mannen var från Samarien[c].
17 Jesus frågade då: ”Var det inte tio personer som blev rena? Var är de andra nio? 18 Är det bara den här främlingen som har kommit tillbaka för att ära Gud?”
19 Till mannen sa han: ”Res dig upp och gå. Din tro har gjort dig frisk[d].”
Guds rike
(Matt 24:28; 24:37-39)
20 En gång frågade fariseerna Jesus när Guds rike skulle komma, och han svarade: ”Guds rike kommer inte på ett sätt som man kan se med sina fysiska ögon. 21 Man kan inte säga: ’Här är det’, eller: ’Där är det’. Nej! Guds rike är mitt ibland er.[e]”
22 Sedan sa han till sina lärjungar: ”Det ska komma en tid då ni längtar efter att få uppleva en enda av Människosonens dagar men inte får det.[f] 23 Man ska säga till er: ’Där är han’, eller: ’Här är han’. Men gå inte dit, spring inte efter sådant! 24 För liksom blixten flammar till över himlen och lyser upp hela horisonten, så ska Människosonen visa sig på sin dag. 25 Men dessförinnan måste han lida svårt och förkastas av detta släkte.
26 Som på Noas dagar ska det också vara på Människosonens dagar. 27 Då åt man och drack och gifte sig och blev bortgift, ända till den dag då Noa gick in i arken och floden kom och utplånade dem allihop.
28 Likadant var det på Lots tid.[g] Människorna åt och drack, köpte och sålde, planterade och byggde, 29 ända till den dag då Lot lämnade Sodom. Då regnade eld och svavel från himlen och utplånade dem allihop. 30 Så ska det vara när Människosonen uppenbarar sig.
31 Den dagen får den som är uppe på taket[h] och har sina ägodelar inne i huset inte gå dit ner för att hämta något, och den som är ute på åkern får inte vända tillbaka. 32 Kom ihåg Lots hustru! 33 Den som försöker bevara sitt liv ska förlora det, men den som förlorar sitt liv ska bevara det.
34 Jag säger er: den natten ska två personer sova i samma säng; den ena tas med, den andra lämnas kvar. 35 Två kvinnor ska mala mjöl tillsammans; den ena tas med, den andra lämnas kvar.[i]”
37 Då frågade hans lärjungar: ”Herre, var blir det någonstans?”
Jesus svarade: ”Där kroppen finns, där samlas gamarna.”
