Gelijkenissen van Jezus
15 De tolontvangers en andere mensen met een slechte reputatie kwamen vaak naar Jezus luisteren. 2 Dat lokte de kritiek van de Farizeeën en de bijbelgeleerden uit. Zij vonden het een schande dat Hij Zich met zulk soort mensen bemoeide. Hij ging zelfs met hen eten! 3 Om hun duidelijk te maken waarom Hij dat deed, zei Hij: 4 ‘Als u nu eens honderd schapen had en één ervan raakte verdwaald, wat zou u dan doen? Het zoeken! Net zolang tot u het vond. De andere negenennegentig zou u gewoon laten grazen. 5 Als u het verdwaalde schaap dan vond, 6 zou u uw vrienden en buren bij elkaar roepen en zeggen: “Luister. Mijn schaap was verdwaald en ik heb het teruggevonden. Zijn jullie ook niet blij?” 7 Zo is ook in de hemel meer blijdschap over één zondaar die bij God terugkomt dan over negenennegentig anderen die niet verdwaald waren.
8 Of denk eens aan een vrouw die tien zilveren muntjes had en één ervan verloor. Zou ze niet een lamp aansteken en overal zoeken en het hele huis aanvegen tot ze de munt vond? 9 Ze zou haar vriendinnen en buurvrouwen bij elkaar roepen en zeggen: “Zijn jullie ook niet blij dat ik de zilveren munt die ik kwijt was, weer heb gevonden?” 10 Ik zeg u dat er bij de engelen van God grote blijdschap is als één zondaar bij God terugkomt.’
11 Jezus vertelde nog een gelijkenis. ‘Een man had twee zonen. 12 Op een dag zei de jongste: “Vader, ik wil mijn deel van de erfenis nu al hebben.” De vader verdeelde zijn bezit tussen zijn twee zonen. 13 Een paar dagen later pakte de jongste zoon zijn bezittingen en ging op reis naar een ver land. Daar verbraste hij zijn hele hebben en houden. 14 Juist toen hij niets meer over had, werd het land getroffen door een vreselijke hongersnood. 15 Het zag er heel slecht voor hem uit. Hij wist een baantje te krijgen bij een boer en moest naar het land om op de varkens te passen. 16 Hij had zoʼn honger dat hij graag wat van het varkensvoer had gegeten, maar dat mocht niet. 17 Eindelijk kwam hij tot bezinning en dacht bij zichzelf: “Bij mijn vader thuis hebben zelfs de knechts meer dan genoeg te eten. En kijk mij hier nu eens zitten! Ik sterf bijna van de honger. 18 Ik weet wat! Ik ga naar mijn vader en zal hem zeggen: ‘Vader, ik heb gezondigd tegen God en tegen u. 19 Ik ben het niet waard nog langer uw zoon genoemd te worden. 20 Wilt u mij aannemen als knecht?’ ” Zo ging hij op weg naar het huis van zijn vader. Die zag hem al in de verte aankomen en had erg met hem te doen. De man holde hem tegemoet, viel hem om de hals en kuste hem. 21 “Vader,” zei de zoon, “ik heb gezondigd tegen God en tegen u. Ik ben het niet langer waard uw zoon genoemd te worden…” 22 Maar de vader liet hem niet eens uitspreken en zei tegen de knechten: “Vlug! Haal de mooiste kleren die we in huis hebben en geef hem die om aan te trekken. Geef hem een ring voor zijn vinger en een paar sandalen. 23 Slacht het kalf dat we hebben vetgemest. Wij gaan feestvieren. 24 Want mijn jongste zoon was dood en is weer levend geworden. Ik was hem kwijt en heb hem weer terug.” En zij vierden feest.
25 Ondertussen was de oudste zoon op het land aan het werk. Toen hij thuiskwam, hoorde hij dansmuziek. 26 Hij riep een knecht en vroeg wat er aan de hand was. 27 “Uw broer is terug,” antwoordde de knecht, “en uw vader heeft het mestkalf laten slachten. Hij is zo blij dat uw broer weer gezond en wel thuis gekomen is.” 28 De oudste broer werd kwaad en wilde niet naar binnen gaan. Zijn vader kwam naar buiten en probeerde hem mee te krijgen. 29 Maar hij antwoordde: “Luister, vader! Al die jaren heb ik mij voor u uitgesloofd. Ik heb altijd gedaan wat u zei. Maar u hebt mij nog nooit een bokje gegeven om te slachten en feest te vieren met mijn vrienden. 30 Nu komt die zoon van u thuis, hij heeft eerst uw geld er bij de hoeren doorgejaagd en wat doet u? U slacht voor hem het beste kalf dat we hebben!” 31 “Maar jongen,” zei de vader, “jij en ik zijn altijd samen. Alles wat van mij is, is van jou. 32 Wij kunnen niet anders dan feestvieren. Het is je eigen broer. Hij was dood en is weer levend geworden. We waren hem kwijt en hebben hem nu terug.” ’

1 Then [a]resorted unto [b]him [c]all the Publicans and sinners, to hear him.
2 Therefore the Pharisees and Scribes murmured, saying, He receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
3 Then spake he this parable to them, saying,
4 (A)What man of you having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders with joy.
6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbors, saying unto them, Rejoice with me: for I have found my sheep which was lost.
7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven for one sinner that converteth, more than for ninety and nine just men, which need none amendment of life.
8 Either what woman having ten groats, if she lose one groat, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?
9 And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends, and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me: for I have found the groat which I had lost.
10 Likewise I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the Angels of God, for one sinner that converteth.
11 ¶ [d]He said moreover, A certain man had two sons,
12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of the goods that falleth to me. So he divided unto them his substance.
13 So not many days after, when the younger son had gathered all together, he took his journey into a far country, and there he wasted his goods with riotous living.
14 Now when he had spent all, there arose a great dearth throughout that land, and he began to be in necessity.
15 Then he went and clave to a citizen of that country, and he sent him to his farm, to feed swine.
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine ate: but no man gave them him.
17 [e]Then he came to himself, and said, How many hired servants at my father’s have bread enough, and I die for hunger?
18 I will rise and go to my father, and say unto him, Father, I have sinned against [f]heaven, and before thee,
19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thine hired servants.
20 So he arose and came to his father, and when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
21 [g]And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
22 Then the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet,
23 And bring the fat calf, and kill him, and let us eat, and be merry:
24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again: and he was lost, but he is found. And they began to be merry.
25 [h]Now the elder brother was in the field, and when he came and drew near to the house, he heard melody, and dancing,
26 And called one of his servants, and asked what those things meant.
27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come, and thy father hath killed the fat calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.
28 Then he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and entreated him.
29 But he answered, and said to his father, Lo, these many years have I done thee service, neither brake I at anytime thy commandment, and yet thou never gavest me a kid that I might make merry with my friends.
30 But when this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy goods with harlots, thou hast for his sake killed the fat calf.
31 And he said unto him, Son thou art ever with me, and all that I have, is thine. It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again: and he was lost, but he is found.
