Psalm 9
World English Bible

For the Chief Musician. Set to “The Death of the Son.” A Psalm by David.

9 I will give thanks to Yahweh with my whole heart.
    I will tell of all your marvelous works.
2 I will be glad and rejoice in you.
    I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
3 When my enemies turn back,
    they stumble and perish in your presence.
4 For you have maintained my just cause.
    You sit on the throne judging righteously.
5 You have rebuked the nations.
    You have destroyed the wicked.
    You have blotted out their name forever and ever.
6 The enemy is overtaken by endless ruin.
    The very memory of the cities which you have overthrown has perished.
7 But Yahweh reigns forever.
    He has prepared his throne for judgment.
8 He will judge the world in righteousness.
    He will administer judgment to the peoples in uprightness.
9 Yahweh will also be a high tower for the oppressed;
    a high tower in times of trouble.
10 Those who know your name will put their trust in you,
    for you, Yahweh, have not forsaken those who seek you.
11 Sing praises to Yahweh, who dwells in Zion,
    and declare among the people what he has done.
12 For he who avenges blood remembers them.
    He doesn’t forget the cry of the afflicted.
13 Have mercy on me, Yahweh.
    See my affliction by those who hate me,
and lift me up from the gates of death,
14     that I may show all of your praise.
    I will rejoice in your salvation in the gates of the daughter of Zion.
15 The nations have sunk down in the pit that they made.
    In the net which they hid, their own foot is taken.
16 Yahweh has made himself known.
    He has executed judgment.
    The wicked is snared by the work of his own hands. Meditation. Selah.
17 The wicked shall be turned back to Sheol,[a]
    even all the nations that forget God.
18 For the needy shall not always be forgotten,
    nor the hope of the poor perish forever.
19 Arise, Yahweh! Don’t let man prevail.
    Let the nations be judged in your sight.
20 Put them in fear, Yahweh.
    Let the nations know that they are only men. Selah.

Der Herr spricht ein gerechtes Urteil[a]

9 Für den Dirigenten[b]. Auf die gleiche Weise zu begleiten wie das Lied ´Der Sohn muss sterben`.[c] Ein Psalm Davids.

2 Dich, Herr, will ich loben von ganzem Herzen,
von all deinen Wundern will ich erzählen.
3 Über dich will ich mich freuen und jubeln,
zur Ehre deines Namens ein Lied singen, du Höchster!

4 Denn jetzt treten meine Feinde den Rückzug an,
dein zorniger Blick wirft sie zu Boden und lässt sie umkommen.[d]

5 Du hast für meine Gerechtigkeit gesorgt und mir zu meinem Recht verholfen.
Du hast dich auf den Richterstuhl gesetzt und gerecht geurteilt.
6 Du hast ganze Völker in ihre Schranken verwiesen[e],
die Gottlosen hast du umkommen lassen
und ihre Namen für immer und ewig ausgelöscht.
7 Der Feind ist völlig vernichtet, seine Macht für immer zerschlagen.
Du hast seine Städte dem Erdboden gleichgemacht; nichts erinnert mehr an sie.

8 Der Herr aber regiert für immer und ewig,
er hat seinen Thron zum Gericht aufgestellt.
9 Er selbst wird die Welt in Gerechtigkeit richten,
wird den Völkern ein aufrichtiges und gerechtes Urteil sprechen.

10 Den Unterdrückten gewährt der Herr seinen Schutz,
in Zeiten der Not ist er für sie eine Burg in sicherer Höhe.
11 Auf dich, Herr, werden alle vertrauen,
die dich und deinen Namen kennen,
denn wer deine Nähe sucht, den lässt du nie allein.

12 Singt dem Herrn, der auf dem Berg Zion wohnt, eure Lieder,
verkündet unter allen Völkern seine großen Taten!
13 Denn er zieht all die zur Rechenschaft, die Blut vergießen,
er kümmert sich um die Verfolgten und überhört nicht die Schreie der Unterdrückten.

14 Sei mir gnädig, Herr, sieh auch meine Not, in die mich der Hass meiner Feinde bringt,
hol mich herauf aus dem Totenreich[f]!
15 Dann will ich deinen Ruhm verbreiten in den Toren der Stadt Zion,
jubeln will ich über deine Rettung.

16 Da sind Völker in die Gruben gestürzt, die sie für andere gegraben hatten,
sie sind mit ihren Füßen im eigenen Fangnetz hängen geblieben.
17 Der Herr hat sich zu erkennen gegeben, indem er Gericht übte:
Wer Gott ablehnt, der verstrickt sich in seinen eigenen Machenschaften.[g]

18 Mögen alle Gottlosen im Totenreich enden,
alle die Völker, denen Gott gleichgültig ist!
19 Der Unterdrückte aber ist nicht für immer vergessen,
und die vom Leid gebeugt sind, müssen ihre Hoffnung nicht aufgeben.

20 Erhebe dich, Herr, lass nicht zu, dass Menschen sich dir widersetzen!
Lass alle Völker vor dich treten und zieh sie zur Rechenschaft!
21 Versetze sie in Schrecken, Herr,
lass alle Völker begreifen, dass sie nur Menschen sind!

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Death of the Son.” A psalm of David.

1 I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;(A)
    I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.(B)
2 I will be glad and rejoice(C) in you;
    I will sing the praises(D) of your name,(E) O Most High.

3 My enemies turn back;
    they stumble and perish before you.
4 For you have upheld my right(F) and my cause,(G)
    sitting enthroned(H) as the righteous judge.(I)
5 You have rebuked the nations(J) and destroyed the wicked;
    you have blotted out their name(K) for ever and ever.
6 Endless ruin has overtaken my enemies,
    you have uprooted their cities;(L)
    even the memory of them(M) has perished.

7 The Lord reigns forever;(N)
    he has established his throne(O) for judgment.
8 He rules the world in righteousness(P)
    and judges the peoples with equity.(Q)
9 The Lord is a refuge(R) for the oppressed,(S)
    a stronghold in times of trouble.(T)
10 Those who know your name(U) trust in you,
    for you, Lord, have never forsaken(V) those who seek you.(W)

11 Sing the praises(X) of the Lord, enthroned in Zion;(Y)
    proclaim among the nations(Z) what he has done.(AA)

    he does not ignore the cries of the afflicted.(AC)

13 Lord, see how my enemies(AD) persecute me!
    Have mercy(AE) and lift me up from the gates of death,(AF)

    and there rejoice in your salvation.(AI)

15 The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug;(AJ)
    their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.(AK)
16 The Lord is known by his acts of justice;
    the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands.[c](AL)
17 The wicked go down to the realm of the dead,(AM)
    all the nations that forget God.(AN)
18 But God will never forget the needy;
    the hope(AO) of the afflicted(AP) will never perish.

19 Arise,(AQ) Lord, do not let mortals triumph;(AR)
    let the nations be judged(AS) in your presence.
20 Strike them with terror,(AT) Lord;
    let the nations know they are only mortal.(AU)

  3. Psalm 9:16 The Hebrew has Higgaion and Selah (words of uncertain meaning) here; Selah occurs also at the end of verse 20.
