19 (89:20) Alors tu parlas dans une vision à ton bien-aimé, Et tu dis: J'ai prêté mon secours à un héros, J'ai élevé du milieu du peuple un jeune homme;

22 (89:23) L'ennemi ne le surprendra pas, Et le méchant ne l'opprimera point;

28 (89:29) Je lui conserverai toujours ma bonté, Et mon alliance lui sera fidèle;

32 (89:33) Je punirai de la verge leurs transgressions, Et par des coups leurs iniquités;

Pause.

38 (89:39) Et pourtant, tu as rejeté, tu as repoussé! Tu t'es irrité contre ton oint!

39 (89:40) Tu as dédaigné l'alliance avec ton serviteur; Tu as abattu, profané sa couronne.

42 (89:43) Tu as élevé la droite de ses adversaires, Tu as réjoui tous ses ennemis;

43 (89:44) Tu as fait reculer le tranchant de son glaive, Et tu ne l'as pas soutenu dans le combat.

44 (89:45) Tu as mis un terme à sa splendeur, Et tu as jeté son trône à terre;

45 (89:46) Tu as abrégé les jours de sa jeunesse, Tu l'as couvert de honte. Pause.

50 (89:51) Souviens-toi, Seigneur! de l'opprobre de tes serviteurs, Souviens-toi que je porte en mon sein tous les peuples nombreux;

89 Maskil. Av esrachiten Etan.[a]

Himlen prisar dina under, Herre,

    floderna i hans makt.

Amen, amen!

Psalm 89[a]

A maskil[b] of Ethan the Ezrahite.

I will sing(A) of the Lord’s great love forever;
with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known(B)
    through all generations.
I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.(C)
You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
I have sworn to David my servant,
‘I will establish your line forever
and make your throne firm through all generations.’”[c](D)

The heavens(E) praise your wonders, Lord,
your faithfulness too, in the assembly(F) of the holy ones.
For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?
Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?(G)
In the council(H) of the holy ones(I) God is greatly feared;
he is more awesome than all who surround him.(J)
Who is like you,(K) Lord God Almighty?(L)
You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

You rule over the surging sea;
when its waves mount up, you still them.(M)
10 You crushed Rahab(N) like one of the slain;
with your strong arm you scattered(O) your enemies.
11 The heavens are yours,(P) and yours also the earth;(Q)
you founded the world and all that is in it.(R)
12 You created the north and the south;
Tabor(S) and Hermon(T) sing for joy(U) at your name.
13 Your arm is endowed with power;
your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.(V)

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;(W)
love and faithfulness go before you.(X)
15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
who walk(Y) in the light(Z) of your presence, Lord.
16 They rejoice in your name(AA) all day long;
    they celebrate your righteousness.
17 For you are their glory and strength,(AB)
and by your favor you exalt our horn.[d](AC)
18 Indeed, our shield[e](AD) belongs to the Lord,
our king(AE) to the Holy One of Israel.

19 Once you spoke in a vision,
to your faithful people you said:
“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;
I have raised up a young man from among the people.
20 I have found David(AF) my servant;(AG)
with my sacred oil(AH) I have anointed(AI) him.
21 My hand will sustain him;
surely my arm will strengthen him.(AJ)
22 The enemy will not get the better of him;(AK)
the wicked will not oppress(AL) him.
23 I will crush his foes before him(AM)
    and strike down his adversaries.(AN)
24 My faithful love will be with him,(AO)
and through my name his horn[f] will be exalted.
25 I will set his hand over the sea,
his right hand over the rivers.(AP)
26 He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,(AQ)
my God, the Rock(AR) my Savior.’(AS)
27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,(AT)
the most exalted(AU) of the kings(AV) of the earth.
28 I will maintain my love to him forever,
and my covenant with him will never fail.(AW)
29 I will establish his line forever,
his throne as long as the heavens endure.(AX)

30 “If his sons forsake my law
and do not follow my statutes,
31 if they violate my decrees
and fail to keep my commands,
32 I will punish their sin with the rod,
    their iniquity with flogging;(AY)
33 but I will not take my love from him,(AZ)
nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my covenant
or alter what my lips have uttered.(BA)
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—
and I will not lie to David—
36 that his line will continue forever
and his throne endure before me like the sun;(BB)
37 it will be established forever like the moon,
the faithful witness in the sky.”(BC)

38 But you have rejected,(BD) you have spurned,
you have been very angry with your anointed one.
39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant
and have defiled his crown in the dust.(BE)
40 You have broken through all his walls(BF)
and reduced his strongholds(BG) to ruins.
41 All who pass by have plundered(BH) him;
he has become the scorn of his neighbors.(BI)
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
you have made all his enemies rejoice.(BJ)
43 Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword
and have not supported him in battle.(BK)
44 You have put an end to his splendor
and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short(BL) the days of his youth;
you have covered him with a mantle of shame.(BM)

46 How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
How long will your wrath burn like fire?(BN)
47 Remember how fleeting is my life.(BO)
For what futility you have created all humanity!
48 Who can live and not see death,
or who can escape the power of the grave?(BP)
49 Lord, where is your former great love,
which in your faithfulness you swore to David?
50 Remember, Lord, how your servant has[g] been mocked,(BQ)
how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
51 the taunts with which your enemies, Lord, have mocked,
with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.(BR)

52 Praise be to the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.(BS)

89 Forever and ever I will sing about the tender kindness of the Lord! Young and old shall hear about your blessings. Your love and kindness are forever; your truth is as enduring as the heavens.

3-4 The Lord God says,[a] “I have made a solemn agreement with my chosen servant David. I have taken an oath to establish his descendants as kings forever on his throne, from now until eternity!”

All heaven shall praise your miracles, O Lord; myriads of angels[b] will praise you for your faithfulness. For who in all of heaven can be compared with God? What mightiest angel[c] is anything like him? The highest of angelic powers[d] stand in dread and awe of him. Who is as revered as he by those surrounding him? O Jehovah, Commander of the heavenly armies, where is there any other Mighty One like you? Faithfulness is your very character.

You rule the oceans when their waves arise in fearful storms; you speak, and they lie still. 10 You have cut haughty Egypt[e] to pieces. Your enemies are scattered by your awesome power. 11 The heavens are yours, the world, everything—for you created them all. 12 You created north and south! Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon rejoice to be signed by your name as their maker! 13 Strong is your arm! Strong is your hand! Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength.

14-15 Your throne is founded on two strong pillars—the one is Justice and the other Righteousness. Mercy and Truth walk before you as your attendants. Blessed are those who hear the joyful blast of the trumpet, for they shall walk in the light of your presence. 16 They rejoice all day long in your wonderful reputation and in your perfect righteousness. 17 You are their strength. What glory! Our power is based on your favor! 18 Yes, our protection is from the Lord himself and he, the Holy One of Israel, has given us our king.

19 In a vision you spoke to your prophet[f] and said, “I have chosen a splendid young man from the common people to be the king— 20 he is my servant David! I have anointed him with my holy oil. 21 I will steady him and make him strong. 22 His enemies shall not outwit him, nor shall the wicked overpower him. 23 I will beat down his adversaries before him and destroy those who hate him. 24 I will protect and bless him constantly and surround him with my love; he will be great because of me. 25 He will hold sway from the Euphrates River to the Mediterranean Sea. 26 And he will cry to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and my Rock of Salvation.’

27 “I will treat him as my firstborn son and make him the mightiest king in all the earth. 28 I will love him forever and be kind to him always; my covenant with him will never end. 29 He will always have an heir; his throne will be as endless as the days of heaven. 30-32 If his children forsake my laws and don’t obey them, then I will punish them, 33 but I will never completely take away my loving-kindness from them, nor let my promise fail. 34 No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back one word of what I said. 35-36 For I have sworn to David (and a holy God can never lie) that his dynasty will go on forever, and his throne will continue to the end of time.[g] 37 It shall be eternal as the moon, my faithful witness in the sky!”

38 Then why cast me off, rejected? Why be so angry with the one you chose as king? 39 Have you renounced your covenant with him? For you have thrown his crown in the dust. 40 You have broken down the walls protecting him and laid in ruins every fort defending him. 41 Everyone who comes along has robbed him while his neighbors mock. 42 You have strengthened his enemies against him and made them rejoice. 43 You have struck down his sword and refused to help him in battle. 44 You have ended his splendor and overturned his throne. 45 You have made him old before his time and publicly disgraced him.

46 O Jehovah, how long will this go on? Will you hide yourself from me forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire? 47 Oh, remember how short you have made man’s lifespan. Is it an empty, futile life you give the sons of men? 48 No man can live forever. All will die. Who can rescue his life from the power of the grave?

49 Lord, where is the love you used to have for me? Where is your kindness that you promised to David with a faithful pledge? 50 Lord, see how all the people are despising me. 51 Your enemies joke about me, the one you anointed as their king.

52 And yet—blessed be the Lord forever! Amen and amen!
