Psalm 60

60 ⁽⁰⁾For the leader. Set to “Lily of Testimony.” A mikhtam of David for teaching about ²when he fought with Aram-Naharayim and with Aram-Tzovah, and Yo’av returned and killed 12,000 from Edom in the Salt Valley:

³⁽¹⁾God, you rejected us; you crushed us;
you were angry; but now revive us.
⁴⁽²⁾You made the land shake, split it apart;
now repair the rifts, for it is collapsing.
⁵⁽³⁾You made your people suffer hard times,
had us drink a wine that made us stagger.

⁶⁽⁴⁾To those who fear you because of the truth
you gave a banner to rally around, (Selah)
⁷⁽⁵⁾so that those you love could be rescued;
so save with your right hand, and answer us!

⁸⁽⁶⁾God in his holiness spoke,
and I took joy [in his promise]:
“I will divide Sh’khem
and determine the shares in the Sukkot Valley.
⁹⁽⁷⁾Gil‘ad is mine and M’nasheh mine,
Efrayim my helmet, Y’hudah my scepter.
¹⁰⁽⁸⁾Mo’av is my washpot; on Edom I throw my shoe;
P’leshet, be crushed because of me!”

¹¹⁽⁹⁾Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
¹²⁽¹⁰⁾God, have you rejected us?
You don’t go out with our armies, God.
¹³⁽¹¹⁾Help us against our enemy,
for human help is worthless.
¹⁴⁽¹²⁾With God’s help we will fight valiantly,
for he will trample our enemies.

60 (For the one directing. Set to The Shushan of the Edut. Mikhtam Dovid to instruct. When he fought Aram Naharayim and Aram Tzovah and when Yo’av returned and struck down 12,000 of Edom in the Gey Melach.) O Elohim, Thou hath rejected us, scattered us; Thou hast been angry; O restore us!

²⁽⁴⁾Thou hast made eretz to tremble; Thou hast torn it asunder, heal the fractures thereof; for it tottereth.

³⁽⁵⁾Thou hast showed Thy people kashah (hard times); Thou hast made us to drink the yayin of tarelah (bewilderment, reeling).

⁴⁽⁶⁾Thou hast set up a nes (banner) to them that fear Thee, that it may be unfurled on account of the truth. Selah.

⁵⁽⁷⁾That Thy Yedidot (beloved ones) may be saved; save with Thy Yamin (Right Hand) and hear me.

⁶⁽⁸⁾Elohim hath spoken in His Kodesh (Holiness); I will exult, I will parcel Shechem as chelek, and measure out the Valley of Sukkot.

⁷⁽⁹⁾Gil‘ad is Mine, and Menasheh is Mine; Ephrayim also is the ma’oz of Mine Rosh; Yehudah is My Mekhokek (prescriber of laws, lawgiver; see Gn 49:10; Isa 42:4 on Moshiach’s torah).

⁸⁽¹⁰⁾Moav is My washpot; over Edom will I cast My sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.

⁹⁽¹¹⁾Who will bring me to the Ir Matzon (city of fortification)? Who will bring me to Edom?

¹⁰⁽¹²⁾Wilt not Thou, O Elohim, which hadst cast us off? And Thou, O Elohim, which didst not go out with tzivoteinu (our armies)?

¹¹⁽¹³⁾Give us help against the enemy; for vain is the teshuat adam (help, salvation of or from Man).

¹²⁽¹⁴⁾In Elohim shall we obtain the victory; for He it is that shall tread down tzareinu (our enemies, oppressors).

Psalm 60

English Standard Version

He Will Tread Down Our Foes

To the choirmaster: according to ^(A)Shushan Eduth. A ^(B)Miktam^[a] of David; ^(C)for instruction; when he ^(D)strove with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and when Joab on his return struck down twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

60 O God, ^(E)you have rejected us, ^(F)broken our defenses;
    you have been angry; ^(G)oh, restore us.
²You have made the land to quake; you have torn it open;
    ^(H)repair its breaches, for it totters.
³^(I)You have made your people see hard things;
    ^(J)you have given us ^(K)wine to drink that made us stagger.

⁴You have set up ^(L)a banner for those who fear you,
that they may flee to it ^(M)from the bow.^[b] Selah
⁵^(N)That your ^(O)beloved ones may be delivered,
give salvation by your right hand and answer us!

⁶God has spoken ^(P)in his holiness:^[c]
    “With exultation ^(Q)I will divide up ^(R)Shechem
    and portion out the Vale of ^(S)Succoth.
⁷^(T)Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;
    ^(U)Ephraim is ^(V)my helmet;
    Judah is my ^(W)scepter.
⁸^(X)Moab is my washbasin;
    upon Edom I ^(Y)cast my shoe;
    over ^(Z)Philistia I shout in triumph.”^[d]

⁹Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    ^(AA)Who will lead me to Edom?
¹⁰Have you not ^(AB)rejected us, O God?
    You ^(AC)do not go forth, O God, with our armies.
¹¹Oh, grant us help against the foe,
    for ^(AD)vain is the salvation of man!
¹²With God we shall ^(AE)do valiantly;
    it is he who will ^(AF)tread down our foes.
