Oración de un perseguido

55 ⁽²⁾Dios mío, escucha mi oración;
no desatiendas mi súplica.
^2-3^(3-4)Hazme caso, contéstame;
en mi angustia te invoco.
Me hacen temblar la voz del enemigo
y los gritos de los malvados.

Me han cargado de aflicciones;
me atacan rabiosamente.
⁴⁽⁵⁾El corazón me salta en el pecho;
el terror de la muerte ha caído sobre mí.
⁵⁽⁶⁾Me ha entrado un temor espantoso;
¡estoy temblando de miedo!
⁶⁽⁷⁾Y digo:
«Ojalá tuviera yo alas como de paloma;
volaría entonces y podría descansar.
⁷⁽⁸⁾Volando me iría muy lejos;
me quedaría a vivir en el desierto.
⁸⁽⁹⁾Correría presuroso a protegerme
de la furia del viento y de la tempestad.»

⁹⁽¹⁰⁾Destrúyelos, Señor, confunde su lenguaje,
pues tan sólo veo violencia y discordia,
¹⁰⁽¹¹⁾que día y noche rondan la ciudad.
Hay en ella maldad e intrigas;
hay en ella corrupción;
¹¹⁽¹²⁾sus calles están llenas de violencia y engaño.

¹²⁽¹³⁾No me ha ofendido un enemigo,
lo cual yo podría soportar;
ni se ha alzado contra mí el que me odia,
de quien yo podría esconderme.
¹³⁽¹⁴⁾¡Has sido tú, mi propio camarada,
mi más íntimo amigo,
¹⁴⁽¹⁵⁾con quien me reunía en el templo de Dios
para conversar amigablemente,
con quien caminaba entre la multitud!

¹⁵⁽¹⁶⁾¡Que sorprenda la muerte a mis enemigos!
¡Que caigan vivos en el sepulcro,
pues la maldad está en su corazón!

¹⁶⁽¹⁷⁾Pero yo clamaré a Dios;
el Señor me salvará.
¹⁷⁽¹⁸⁾Me quejaré y lloraré
mañana, tarde y noche,
y él escuchará mi voz.
¹⁸⁽¹⁹⁾En las batallas me librará;
me salvará la vida,
aunque sean muchos mis adversarios.

¹⁹⁽²⁰⁾Dios, el que reina eternamente,
me oirá y los humillará,
pues ellos no cambian de conducta
ni tienen temor de Dios.
²⁰⁽²¹⁾Levantan la mano contra sus amigos;
no cumplen su promesa de amistad.
²¹⁽²²⁾Usan palabras más suaves que la mantequilla,
pero sus pensamientos son de guerra.
Usan palabras más suaves que el aceite,
pero no son sino espadas afiladas.

²²⁽²³⁾Deja tus preocupaciones al Señor,
y él te mantendrá firme;
nunca dejará que caiga
el hombre que lo obedece.

²³⁽²⁴⁾Dios mío,
los asesinos y mentirosos no vivirán
ni la mitad de su vida;
tú harás que caigan al fondo del sepulcro,
pero yo confío en ti.

55 Escucha, oh Dios, mi oración,
Y no te escondas de mi súplica.
2 Está atento, y respóndeme;
Clamo en mi oración, y me conmuevo,
3 A causa de la voz del enemigo,
Por la opresión del impío;
Porque sobre mí echaron iniquidad,
Y con furor me persiguen.

4 Mi corazón está dolorido dentro de mí,
Y terrores de muerte sobre mí han caído.
5 Temor y temblor vinieron sobre mí,
Y terror me ha cubierto.
6 Y dije: ¡Quién me diese alas como de paloma!
Volaría yo, y descansaría.
7 Ciertamente huiría lejos;
Moraría en el desierto. Selah
8 Me apresuraría a escapar
Del viento borrascoso, de la tempestad.
9 Destrúyelos, oh Señor; confunde la lengua de ellos;
Porque he visto violencia y rencilla en la ciudad.
10 Día y noche la rodean sobre sus muros,
E iniquidad y trabajo hay en medio de ella.
11 Maldad hay en medio de ella,
Y el fraude y el engaño no se apartan de sus plazas.

12 Porque no me afrentó un enemigo,
Lo cual habría soportado;
Ni se alzó contra mí el que me aborrecía,
Porque me hubiera ocultado de él;
13 Sino tú, hombre, al parecer íntimo mío,
Mi guía, y mi familiar;
14 Que juntos comunicábamos dulcemente los secretos,
Y andábamos en amistad en la casa de Dios.
15 Que la muerte les sorprenda;
Desciendan vivos al Seol,
Porque hay maldades en sus moradas, en medio de ellos.

16 En cuanto a mí, a Dios clamaré;
Y Jehová me salvará.
17 Tarde y mañana y a mediodía oraré y clamaré,
Y él oirá mi voz.
18 Él redimirá en paz mi alma de la guerra contra mí,
Aunque contra mí haya muchos.
19 Dios oirá, y los quebrantará luego,
El que permanece desde la antigüedad;
Por cuanto no cambian,
Ni temen a Dios. Selah

20 Extendió el inicuo sus manos contra los que estaban en paz con él;
Violó su pacto.
21 Los dichos de su boca son más blandos que mantequilla,
Pero guerra hay en su corazón;
Suaviza sus palabras más que el aceite,
Mas ellas son espadas desnudas.

²²Echa sobre Jehová tu carga, y él te sustentará;

No dejará para siempre caído al justo.

23 Mas tú, oh Dios, harás descender aquellos al pozo de perdición.
Los hombres sanguinarios y engañadores no llegarán a la mitad de sus días;
Pero yo en ti confiaré.

¹For the leader. On stringed instruments. A maskil of David.

I

²Listen, God, to my prayer;^(A)
    do not hide from my pleading;
³    hear me and give answer.
I rock with grief; I groan
⁴    at the uproar of the enemy,
    the clamor of the wicked.
They heap trouble upon me,
    savagely accuse me.
⁵My heart pounds within me;
    death’s terrors fall upon me.
⁶Fear and trembling overwhelm me;
    shuddering sweeps over me.
⁷I say, “If only I had wings like a dove
    that I might fly away and find rest.^(B)
⁸Far away I would flee;
    I would stay in the desert.^(C)
Selah
⁹“I would soon find a shelter
    from the raging wind and storm.”

II

¹⁰Lord, check and confuse their tongues.
    For I see violence and strife in the city
¹¹    making rounds on its walls day and night.
Within are mischief and trouble;
¹²    treachery is in its midst;
    oppression and fraud never leave its streets.^(D)
¹³For it is not an enemy that reviled me—
    that I could bear—
Not a foe who viewed me with contempt,
    from that I could hide.
¹⁴But it was you, my other self,
    my comrade and friend,^(E)
¹⁵You, whose company I enjoyed,
    at whose side I walked
    in the house of God.

III

¹⁶Let death take them;
    let them go down alive to Sheol,^(F)
    for evil is in their homes and bellies.
¹⁷But I will call upon God,
    and the Lord will save me.
¹⁸At dusk, dawn, and noon
    I will grieve and complain,
    and my prayer will be heard.^(G)
¹⁹He will redeem my soul in peace
    from those who war against me,
    though there are many who oppose me.
²⁰God, who sits enthroned forever,^(H)
    will hear me and afflict them.
Selah
For they will not mend their ways;
    they have no fear of God.
²¹He stretched out his hand at his friends
    and broke his covenant.
²²Softer than butter is his speech,
    but war is in his heart.
Smoother than oil are his words,
    but they are unsheathed swords.^(I)
²³Cast your care upon the Lord,
    who will give you support.
He will never allow
    the righteous to stumble.^(J)
²⁴But you, God, will bring them down
    to the pit of destruction.^(K)
These bloodthirsty liars
    will not live half their days,
    but I put my trust in you.^(L)

Psalm 55 The psalmist, betrayed by intimate friends (Ps 55:14–15, 20–21), prays that God punish those oath breakers and thus be acknowledged as the protector of the wronged. The sufferings of the psalmist include both ostracism (Ps 55:4) and mental turmoil (Ps 55:5–6), culminating in the wish to flee society (Ps 55:7–9). The wish for a sudden death for one’s enemies (Ps 55:16) occurs elsewhere in the Psalms; an example of such a death is the earth opening under the wicked Dathan and Abiram (Nm 16:31–32). The psalmist, confident of vindication, exhorts others to a like trust in the God of justice (Ps 55:23). The Psalm is not so much for personal vengeance as for a public vindication of God’s righteousness now. There was no belief in an afterlife where such vindication could take place.
