42 神啊！我的心渴慕你，
好象鹿渴慕溪水。
2 我的心渴想 神，就是永活的 神；
我甚么时候可以来朝见 神的面呢？
3 人整天对我说：“你的 神在哪里呢？”
我就昼夜以眼泪当饭吃。
4 我从前常常和群众同去，
与他们进到 神的殿里，
在欢呼和称谢声中，大家守节。
每逢想起这些事，我的心就感到难过。
5 我的心哪！你为甚么沮丧呢？
为甚么在我里面不安呢？
应当等候 神；
因为我还要称赞他，
他是我面前的救助、我的 神。
6 我的心在我里面沮丧；
因此我从约旦地，从黑门岭，
从米萨山，记念你。
7 你的瀑布一发声，深渊就和深渊响应；
你的洪涛和波浪都掩盖了我。
8 白天耶和华赐下他的慈爱；
夜间我要向他歌颂，
向赐我生命的 神祷告。
9 我要对 神我的盘石说：
“你为甚么忘记我呢？
我为甚么因仇敌的压迫徘徊悲哀呢？”
10 我的敌人整天对我说：
“你的 神在哪里呢？”
他们这样辱骂我的时候，
就像在击碎我的骨头。
11 我的心哪！你为甚么沮丧呢？
为甚么在我里面不安呢？
应当等候 神；
因为我还要称赞他，
他是我面前的救助、我的 神。

42 上帝啊，我的心切慕你，
像鹿切慕溪水。
2 我心里渴慕上帝，
渴慕永活的上帝，
我何时才能去朝拜祂呢？
3 我不吃不喝，昼夜以泪洗面，
人们整天讥笑我：
“你的上帝在哪里？”
4 从前我带领众人浩浩荡荡去上帝的殿，
在欢呼、感恩声中一起过节。
我回想这些事，
心中无限忧伤。
5 我的心啊！
你为何沮丧？为何烦躁？
要仰望上帝，
因为我还要赞美祂——我的救主，我的上帝。
6 我的上帝啊，我心中沮丧，
便在约旦河、黑门山和米萨山想起你。
7 你的瀑布发出巨响，
回荡在深渊之间，
你的洪涛巨浪淹没我。
8 白天耶和华将祂的慈爱浇灌我；
夜间我歌颂祂，
向赐我生命的上帝祷告。
9 我对上帝——我的磐石说：
“你为何忘记我？
为何要我受仇敌的攻击，使我哀伤不已呢？”
10 仇敌的辱骂刺骨钻心。
他们整天对我说：
“你的上帝在哪里？”

42 Von den Nachkommen Korachs, zum Nachdenken.
2 Wie ein Hirsch nach frischem Wasser lechzt,
so sehne ich mich nach dir, o Gott!
3 Ja, ich dürste nach Gott,
nach dem lebendigen Gott.
Wann darf ich in seinen Tempel kommen?
Wann darf ich wieder vor ihn treten?
4 Tag und Nacht weine ich, Tränen sind meine einzige Speise,
denn ständig verspottet man mich und fragt:
»Wo bleibt er denn, dein Gott?«
5 Es bricht mir das Herz,
wenn ich an früher denke:
Da ging ich dem großen Festzug voran
und führte ihn zum Haus Gottes.
Da konnte ich Gott zujubeln
und ihm danken inmitten der Menge!
6 Warum nur bin ich so traurig?
Warum ist mein Herz so schwer?
Auf Gott will ich hoffen, denn ich weiß:
Ich werde ihm wieder danken.
Er ist mein Gott, er wird mir beistehen!
7 Mein Gott, ich bin völlig verzweifelt!
Aus der Ferne des Jordanlandes denke ich voll Trauer an dich.
Während ich auf dem Berg Misar im Hermongebirge stehe,
gehen meine Gedanken zu dir.
8 Von den Bergen stürzen Wildbäche tosend in die Tiefe.
Mir ist zumute, als würden die Fluten mich mitreißen und fortspülen.
9 Tagsüber seufze ich: »Herr, schenke mir deine Gnade!«
Und nachts singe und bete ich zu Gott,
in dessen Hand mein Leben liegt.
10 Gott, du bist doch mein einziger Halt!
Warum hast du mich vergessen?
Warum lässt du mich leiden
unter der Gewalt meiner Feinde?
11 Ihr Hohn dringt mir ins Herz, wenn sie Tag für Tag fragen:
»Wo bleibt er denn, dein Gott?«
12 Warum nur bin ich so traurig?
Warum ist mein Herz so schwer?
Auf Gott will ich hoffen, denn ich weiß:
Ich werde ihm wieder danken.
Er ist mein Gott, er wird mir beistehen!

1 As the deer(A) pants for streams of water,(B)
so my soul pants(C) for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts(D) for God, for the living God.(E)
When can I go(F) and meet with God?
3 My tears(G) have been my food
day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”(H)
4 These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:(I)
how I used to go to the house of God(J)
under the protection of the Mighty One[d]
with shouts of joy(K) and praise(L)
among the festive throng.(M)
5 Why, my soul, are you downcast?(N)
Why so disturbed(O) within me?
Put your hope in God,(P)
for I will yet praise(Q) him,
my Savior(R) and my God.(S)
6 My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember(T) you
from the land of the Jordan,(U)
the heights of Hermon(V)—from Mount Mizar.
7 Deep calls to deep(W)
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.(X)
8 By day the Lord directs his love,(Y)

a prayer to the God of my life.(AB)
9 I say to God my Rock,(AC)
“Why have you forgotten(AD) me?
Why must I go about mourning,(AE)

2 As the deer longs for streams of water,(A)
so my soul longs for you, O God.
3 My soul thirsts for God, the living God.
When can I enter and see the face of God?[c](B)
4 My tears have been my bread day and night,(C)
as they ask me every day, “Where is your God?”(D)
5 Those times I recall
as I pour out my soul,(E)
When I would cross over to the shrine of the Mighty One,[d]
to the house of God,
Amid loud cries of thanksgiving,
with the multitude keeping festival.(F)
6 Why are you downcast, my soul;
why do you groan within me?
Wait for God, for I shall again praise him,
my savior and my God.

7 My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I remember you
From the land of the Jordan[e] and Hermon,
from Mount Mizar,(G)
8 [f]Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your torrents,
and all your waves and breakers
sweep over me.(H)
9 By day may the Lord send his mercy,
and by night may his righteousness be with me!
I will pray[g] to the God of my life,
10 I will say to God, my rock:
“Why do you forget me?(I)
Why must I go about mourning
with the enemy oppressing me?”
11 It shatters my bones, when my adversaries reproach me,
when they say to me every day: “Where is your God?”
12 Why are you downcast, my soul,
why do you groan within me?
Wait for God, for I shall again praise him,
my savior and my God.

- Psalms 42–43 Ps 42–43 form a single lament of three sections, each section ending in an identical refrain (Ps 42:6, 12; 43:5). The psalmist is far from Jerusalem, and longs for the divine presence that Israel experienced in the Temple liturgy. Despite sadness, the psalmist hopes once again to join the worshiping crowds.
- 42:1 The Korahites: a major guild of Temple singers (2 Chr 20:19) whose name appears in the superscriptions of Ps 42; 44–49; 84–85; 87–88.
- 42:3 See the face of God: “face” designates a personal presence (Gn 33:10; Ex 10:28–29; 2 Sm 17:11). The expressions “see God/God’s face” occur elsewhere (Ps 11:7; 17:15; cf. Ex 24:10; 33:7–11; Jb 33:26) for the presence of God in the Temple.
- 42:5 The shrine of the Mighty One: this reading follows the tradition of the Septuagint and the Vulgate.
- 42:7 From the land of the Jordan: the sources of the Jordan are in the foothills of Mount Hermon in present-day southern Lebanon. Mount Mizar is presumed to be a mountain in the same range.
- 42:8 Deep calls to deep: to the psalmist, the waters arising in the north are overwhelming and far from God’s presence, like the waters of chaos (Ps 18:5; 69:2–3, 15; Jon 2:3–6).
- 42:9–10 I will pray…I will say: in the midst of his depression the psalmist turns to prayer. Despite his situation he trusts the Lord to deliver him from his sorrow so that he may enter the Temple precincts and praise him once again (Ps 43:3–4, 5b).
