Psalm 33

Psalm 33[a]
Praise of God’s Power and Providence
I
1 Rejoice, you righteous, in the Lord;
praise from the upright is fitting.(A)
2 Give thanks to the Lord on the harp;
on the ten-stringed lyre offer praise.(B)
3 Sing to him a new song;
skillfully play with joyful chant.
4 For the Lord’s word is upright;
all his works are trustworthy.
5 He loves justice and right.
The earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.(C)

6 By the Lord’s word the heavens were made;
by the breath of his mouth all their host.[b](D)
7 [c]He gathered the waters of the sea as a mound;
he sets the deep into storage vaults.(E)
III
8 Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all who dwell in the world show him reverence.
9 For he spoke, and it came to be,
commanded, and it stood in place.(F)
10 The Lord foils the plan of nations,
frustrates the designs of peoples.
11 But the plan of the Lord stands forever,
the designs of his heart through all generations.(G)
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people chosen as his inheritance.(H)

13 From heaven the Lord looks down
and observes the children of Adam,(I)
14 From his dwelling place he surveys
all who dwell on earth.
15 The One who fashioned together their hearts
is the One who knows all their works.

16 A king is not saved by a great army,
nor a warrior delivered by great strength.
17 Useless is the horse for safety;
despite its great strength, it cannot be saved.
18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon those who fear him,
upon those who count on his mercy,
19 To deliver their soul from death,
and to keep them alive through famine.

20 Our soul waits for the Lord,
he is our help and shield.(J)
21 For in him our hearts rejoice;
in his holy name we trust.
22 May your mercy, Lord, be upon us;
as we put our hope in you.

- Psalm 33 A hymn in which the just are invited (Ps 33:1–3) to praise God, who by a mere word (Ps 33:4–5) created the three-tiered universe of the heavens, the cosmic waters, and the earth (Ps 33:6–9). Human words, in contrast, effect nothing (Ps 33:10–11). The greatness of human beings consists in God’s choosing them as a special people and their faithful response (Ps 33:12–22).
- 33:6 All their host: the stars of the sky are commonly viewed as a vast army, e.g., Neh 9:6; Is 40:26; 45:12; Jer 33:22.
- 33:7 The waters…as a mound: ancients sometimes attributed the power keeping the seas from overwhelming land to a primordial victory of the storm-god over personified Sea.

1 Hỡi những người ngay lành, hãy vui vẻ ca ngợi Chúa;
Sự ca ngợi Ngài thật thích hợp với người ngay thật.
2 Hãy dùng hạc cầm dâng lời cảm tạ Chúa;
Hãy dùng thập huyền cầm ca hát tôn vinh Ngài.
3 Hãy hát cho Ngài một bài ca mới;
Khá đàn thật hay, hòa nhịp với tiếng reo mừng,
4 Vì lời Chúa rất chân thật;
Mọi việc Ngài làm đều thành tín.
5 Ngài yêu mến công chính và công lý;
Cả thế gian đầy dẫy tình thương của Chúa.
6 Nhờ lời Chúa, các tầng trời được dựng nên;
Bởi hơi thở của miệng Ngài, các thiên thể[a] liền hiện hữu.
7 Ngài gom nước biển lại thành một khối;
Ngài chứa nước trong các vực sâu.
8 Hỡi cả thế gian, hãy kính sợ Chúa;
Hỡi các dân tộc trên thế gian, hãy khiếp sợ Ngài,
9 Vì khi Ngài phán, muôn vật[b] liền hiện hữu;
Ngài ra lịnh, tất cả[c] được đứng vững vàng.
10 Chúa làm bại mưu các nước;
Ngài khiến kế hoạch của các dân ra hư không.
11 Còn ý định của Chúa cứ được vững lập đến đời đời;
Các ý chỉ của lòng Ngài còn từ đời nọ đến đời kia.
12 Phước cho nước nào có Chúa là Thần[d] của mình,
Phước cho dân nào được Ngài chọn làm cơ nghiệp Ngài.
13 Chúa từ trời nhìn xuống;
Ngài thấy rõ mọi con cái loài người.
14 Từ nơi Ngài ngự Ngài quan sát mọi người trên đất.
15 Ngài dựng nên lòng dạ mọi người,
Nên Ngài hiểu rõ mọi việc họ làm.
16 Chẳng có vua nào được cứu nhờ quân đội mạnh;
Chẳng có chiến sĩ nào được cứu nhờ sức mạnh mình.
17 Nhờ vào ngựa để chiến thắng là hy vọng hão huyền;
Dù ngựa có sức lực nó cũng chẳng cứu được ai.
18 Kìa, mắt Chúa nhìn xem những người kính sợ Ngài,
Những người đặt hy vọng vào lòng thương xót của Ngài,
19 Ðể giải cứu linh hồn họ khỏi chết,
Và bảo tồn mạng sống họ khi nạn đói xảy ra.
20 Linh hồn chúng ta trông cậy Chúa;
Ngài là nguồn cứu giúp và thuẫn khiên của chúng ta.
21 Lòng chúng ta vui mừng trong Ngài,
Bởi vì chúng ta tin cậy vào danh thánh Ngài.
22 Chúa ôi, nguyện tình thương của Ngài ngự trên chúng con,
Y như những gì chúng con hy vọng nơi Ngài.
