The King Trusts in Yahweh

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

21 O Yahweh, in Your strength the king will (A)be glad,
And in Your [a]salvation how greatly he will rejoice!
You have (B)given him his heart’s desire,
And You have not withheld the request of his lips. [b]Selah.
For You (C)meet him with the blessings of good things;
You set a (D)crown of fine gold on his head.
He asked life of You,
You (E)gave it to him,
(F)Length of days forever and ever.
His (G)glory is great through Your [c]salvation,
(H)Splendor and majesty You bestow upon him.
For You make him [d]most (I)blessed forever;
You make him joyful (J)with gladness in Your presence.

For the king (K)trusts in Yahweh,
And through the lovingkindness of the Most High (L)he will not be shaken.
Your hand will (M)find out all your enemies;
Your right hand will find out those who hate you.
You will make them (N)as a fiery oven in the time of your [e]anger;
Yahweh will (O)swallow them up in His wrath,
And (P)fire will devour them.
10 Their [f]offspring You will destroy from the earth,
And their (Q)seed from among the sons of men.
11 Though they [g](R)intended evil against You
And (S)devised a scheme,
They will not succeed.
12 For You will (T)make them turn their back;
You will [h]aim (U)with Your bowstrings at their faces.
13 Be exalted, O Yahweh, in Your strength;
We will (V)sing and praise Your might.

Psalm 21

For the choir director; a psalm by David.

The king finds joy in your strength, O Yahweh.
    What great joy he has in your victory!
You gave him his heart’s desire.
    You did not refuse the prayer from his lips. Selah
You welcomed him with the blessings of good things
    and set a crown of fine gold on his head.
He asked you for life.
    You gave him a long life, forever and ever.
Because of your victory his glory is great.
    You place splendor and majesty on him.
Yes, you made him a blessing forever.
    You made him glad with the joy of your presence.
        Indeed, the king trusts Yahweh,
            and through the mercy of Elyon, he will not be moved.

Your hand will discover all your enemies.
    Your powerful hand will find all who hate you.
When you appear, you will make them burn like a blazing furnace.
    Yahweh will swallow them up in his anger.
        Fire will devour them.
10 You will destroy their children from the earth
    and their offspring from among Adam’s descendants.
11 Although they scheme and plan evil against you,
    they will not succeed.
12 They turn their backs and flee
    because you aim your bow at their faces.[a]

13 Arise, O Yahweh, in your strength.
    We will sing and make music to praise your power.

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 21:12 Hebrew meaning of this verse uncertain.

21 The king shall joy in thy strength, O Lord; and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!

Thou hast given him his heart's desire, and hast not withholden the request of his lips. Selah.

For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head.

He asked life of thee, and thou gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever.

His glory is great in thy salvation: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him.

For thou hast made him most blessed for ever: thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance.

For the king trusteth in the Lord, and through the mercy of the most High he shall not be moved.

Thine hand shall find out all thine enemies: thy right hand shall find out those that hate thee.

Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger: the Lord shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them.

10 Their fruit shalt thou destroy from the earth, and their seed from among the children of men.

11 For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.

12 Therefore shalt thou make them turn their back, when thou shalt make ready thine arrows upon thy strings against the face of them.

13 Be thou exalted, Lord, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power.

Psalm 21

For the choir director: A psalm of David.

How the king rejoices in your strength, O Lord!
    He shouts with joy because you give him victory.
For you have given him his heart’s desire;
    you have withheld nothing he requested. Interlude

You welcomed him back with success and prosperity.
    You placed a crown of finest gold on his head.
He asked you to preserve his life,
    and you granted his request.
    The days of his life stretch on forever.
Your victory brings him great honor,
    and you have clothed him with splendor and majesty.
You have endowed him with eternal blessings
    and given him the joy of your presence.
For the king trusts in the Lord.
    The unfailing love of the Most High will keep him from stumbling.

You will capture all your enemies.
    Your strong right hand will seize all who hate you.
You will throw them in a flaming furnace
    when you appear.
The Lord will consume them in his anger;
    fire will devour them.
10 You will wipe their children from the face of the earth;
    they will never have descendants.
11 Although they plot against you,
    their evil schemes will never succeed.
12 For they will turn and run
    when they see your arrows aimed at them.
13 Rise up, O Lord, in all your power.
    With music and singing we celebrate your mighty acts.
