(A song by Solomon for worship.)

Only the Lord Can Bless a Home

Without the help of the Lord
it is useless to build a home
    or to guard a city.
It is useless to get up early
and stay up late
in order to earn a living.
God takes care of his own,
    even while they sleep.[a]

Children are a blessing
and a gift from the Lord.
Having a lot of children
to take care of you
    in your old age
is like a warrior
    with a lot of arrows.
The more you have,
the better off you will be,
because they will protect you
when your enemies
    attack you in court.

Psalm 127

A Song of [a]Ascents. Of Solomon.

Except the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; except the Lord keeps the city, the watchman wakes but in vain.(A)

It is vain for you to rise up early, to take rest late, to eat the bread of [anxious] toil—for He gives [blessings] to His beloved in sleep.

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.(B)

As arrows are in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth.

Happy, blessed, and fortunate is the man whose quiver is filled with them! They will not be put to shame when they speak with their adversaries [in gatherings] at the [city’s] gate.
