Un cântec de pelerinaj
1 În strâmtorarea mea strig către Domnul
şi El îmi răspunde.
2 Doamne, scapă-mi sufletul de buzele mincinoase
şi de limba înşelătoare!
3 Ce-ţi va da El ţie,
ce-ţi va aduce El, limbă înşelătoare?
4 Săgeţi ascuţite de războinic,
cu cărbuni de verigel[b].
5 Vai de mine, căci locuiesc la Meşek,
sălăşluiesc în corturile din Chedar!
6 Mult mi-a mai locuit sufletul
împreună cu cei ce urăsc pacea!
7 Eu sunt pentru pace, dar când vorbesc eu,
ei sunt pentru război.

- Psalmii 120:1 După cum ne indică şi titlurile lor, aceşti psalmi au fost adunaţi într-o colecţie de cântări care erau cântate fie atunci când credincioşii urcau treptele Templului (de aici Cântări ale treptelor), fie atunci când pelerinii care veneau să se închine la Ierusalim urcau Muntele Sion (de aici Cântări ale procesiunii sau de pelerinaj). Totodată, această colecţie de psalmi mai este cunoscută în liturghia evreiască, împreună cu Ps. 135-136, drept Hallelul Mare
- Psalmii 120:4 Sau: rotem (lat. retama raetam), plantă uşor inflamabilă. Lemnul acestei plante era folosit drept cărbune (vezi nota de la Iov 30:4)

A song of ascents.
1 I call on the Lord(A) in my distress,(B)
and he answers me.
2 Save me, Lord,
from lying lips(C)
and from deceitful tongues.(D)
3 What will he do to you,
and what more besides,
you deceitful tongue?
4 He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrows,(E)
with burning coals of the broom bush.
5 Woe to me that I dwell in Meshek,
that I live among the tents of Kedar!(F)
6 Too long have I lived
among those who hate peace.
7 I am for peace;
but when I speak, they are for war.

3 What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?
4 Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.
5 Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!
6 My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace.
7 I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.
