118 Den gracias al Señor porque él es bueno;
su gran amor perdura para siempre.
2 Que lo diga Israel:
«Su gran amor perdura para siempre».
3 Que lo diga la familia de Aarón:
«Su gran amor perdura para siempre».
4 Que lo digan los que temen al Señor:
«Su gran amor perdura para siempre».
5 Desde mi angustia clamé al Señor
y él respondió dándome libertad.
6 El Señor está conmigo y no tengo miedo;
¿qué me puede hacer un simple mortal?
7 El Señor está conmigo, él es mi ayuda;
veré por los suelos a los que me odian.
8 Es mejor refugiarse en el Señor
que confiar en el hombre.
9 Es mejor refugiarse en el Señor
que confiar en gente poderosa.
10 Todas las naciones me rodearon,
pero en el nombre del Señor las aniquilé.
11 Me rodearon por completo,
pero en el nombre del Señor las aniquilé.
12 Me rodearon como abejas,
pero se consumieron como zarzas en el fuego.

13 Me empujaron[a] con violencia para que cayera,
pero el Señor me ayudó.
14 El Señor es mi fuerza y mi canción;
¡él es mi salvación!
15 Gritos de júbilo y salvación
resuenan en las casas de los justos:
«¡La diestra del Señor hace proezas!
16 ¡La diestra del Señor es exaltada!
¡La diestra del Señor hace proezas!».
17 No he de morir; he de vivir
para proclamar las obras del Señor.
18 El Señor me ha castigado con dureza,
pero no me ha entregado a la muerte.
19 Ábranme las puertas de la justicia
para que entre yo a dar gracias al Señor.
20 Esta es la puerta del Señor,
por ella entran los justos.

porque eres mi salvación!
22 La piedra que desecharon los constructores
ha llegado a ser la piedra angular.
23 Esto ha sido obra del Señor
y nos deja maravillados.
24 Este es el día que hizo el Señor;
regocijémonos y alegrémonos en él.
25 Señor, te ruego, ¡danos la salvación!
Señor, te ruego, ¡concédenos la victoria!
26 Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor.
Desde la casa del Señor los bendecimos.
27 El Señor es Dios
y nos ilumina.
Con ramas en las manos, únanse a la procesión festiva
hasta los cuernos del altar.
28 Tú eres mi Dios, por eso te doy gracias;

1 Give thanks to Yahweh because he is good,
because his mercy endures forever.
2 Israel should say,
“His mercy endures forever.”
3 The descendants of Aaron should say,
“His mercy endures forever.”
4 Those who fear Yahweh should say,
“His mercy endures forever.”
5 During times of trouble I called on Yah.
Yah answered me and set me free from all of them.
6 Yahweh is on my side.
I am not afraid.
What can mortals do to me?
7 Yahweh is on my side as my helper.
I will see the defeat of those who hate me.
8 It is better to depend on Yahweh
than to trust mortals.
9 It is better to depend on Yahweh
than to trust influential people.
10 All the nations surrounded me,
but armed with the name of Yahweh, I defeated them.
11 They surrounded me. Yes, they surrounded me,
but armed with the name of Yahweh, I defeated them.
12 They swarmed around me like bees,
but they were extinguished like burning thornbushes.
So armed with the name of Yahweh, I defeated them.
13 They pushed hard to make me fall,
but Yahweh helped me.
14 Yah is my strength and my song.
He is my savior.
15 The sound of joyful singing and victory is heard
in the tents of righteous people.
The right hand of Yahweh displays strength.
16 The right hand of Yahweh is held high.
The right hand of Yahweh displays strength.
17 I will not die,
but I will live and tell what Yah has done.
18 Yah disciplined me severely,
but he did not allow me to be killed.
19 Open the gates of righteousness for me.
I will go through them and give thanks to Yah.
20 This is the gate of Yahweh
through which righteous people will enter.
21 I give thanks to you,
because you have answered me.
You are my savior.
22 The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.
23 Yahweh is responsible for this,
and it is amazing for us to see.
24 This is the day Yahweh has made.
Let’s rejoice and be glad today!
25 We beg you, O Yahweh, save us!
We beg you, O Yahweh, give us success!
26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of Yahweh.
We bless you from Yahweh’s house.
27 Yahweh is El, and he has given us light.
March in a festival procession
with branches to the horns of the altar.
28 You are my El, and I give thanks to you.
My Elohim, I honor you highly.
29 Give thanks to Yahweh because he is good,

5 In danger I called on the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me free.
6 The Lord is with me; I am not afraid;
what can mortals do against me?(C)
7 The Lord is with me as my helper;
I shall look in triumph on my foes.
8 Better to take refuge in the Lord(D)
than to put one’s trust in mortals.
9 Better to take refuge in the Lord
than to put one’s trust in princes.

10 All the nations surrounded me;
in the Lord’s name I cut them off.
11 They surrounded me on every side;
in the Lord’s name I cut them off.

they burned up like fire among thorns;
in the Lord’s name I cut them off.
13 I was hard pressed and falling,
but the Lord came to my help.(F)
14 The Lord, my strength and might,

15 The joyful shout of deliverance
is heard in the tents of the righteous:
“The Lord’s right hand works valiantly;
16 the Lord’s right hand is raised;
the Lord’s right hand works valiantly.”
17 I shall not die but live
and declare the deeds of the Lord.
18 The Lord chastised me harshly,
but did not hand me over to death.

19 Open the gates of righteousness;
I will enter and thank the Lord.(H)
20 This is the Lord’s own gate,
through it the righteous enter.
21 I thank you for you answered me;
you have been my savior.
22 [b]The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.(I)
23 By the Lord has this been done;
it is wonderful in our eyes.
24 This is the day the Lord has made;
let us rejoice in it and be glad.

- Psalm 118 A thanksgiving liturgy accompanying a procession of the king and the people into the Temple precincts. After an invocation in the form of a litany (Ps 118:1–4), the psalmist (very likely speaking in the name of the community) describes how the people confidently implored God’s help (Ps 118:5–9) when hostile peoples threatened its life (Ps 118:10–14); vividly God’s rescue is recounted (Ps 118:15–18). Then follows a possible dialogue at the Temple gates between the priests and the psalmist as the latter enters to offer the thanksgiving sacrifice (Ps 118:19–25). Finally, the priests impart their blessing (Ps 118:26–27), and the psalmist sings in gratitude (Ps 118:28–29).
- 118:22 The stone the builders rejected: a proverb: what is insignificant to human beings has become great through divine election. The “stone” may originally have meant the foundation stone or capstone of the Temple. The New Testament interpreted the verse as referring to the death and resurrection of Christ (Mt 21:42; Acts 4:11; cf. Is 28:16 and Rom 9:33; 1 Pt 2:7).
- 118:25 Grant salvation: the Hebrew for this cry has come into English as “Hosanna.” This cry and the words in Ps 118:26 were used in the gospels to welcome Jesus entering the Temple on Palm Sunday (Mk 11:9–10).
