Lời Mở Ðầu
1 Phao-lô và Ti-mô-thê, các đầy tớ của Ðức Chúa Jesus Christ, kính gởi tất cả các thánh đồ trong Ðức Chúa Jesus Christ, cùng các vị giám mục, và các chấp sự ở Phi-líp. 2 Nguyện xin ân sủng và bình an từ Ðức Chúa Trời, Cha chúng ta, và từ Ðức Chúa Jesus Christ, Chúa chúng ta, đến cùng anh chị em.
Cảm Tạ và Cầu Nguyện
3 Mỗi khi nhớ đến anh chị em, tôi cảm tạ Ðức Chúa Trời của tôi. 4 Mỗi khi cầu nguyện cho tất cả anh chị em, tôi luôn luôn cầu nguyện với lòng vui mừng, 5 vì anh chị em đã dự phần với tôi trong nỗ lực truyền bá Tin Mừng từ ngày đầu tiên cho đến bây giờ. 6 Tôi có niềm tin quả quyết nầy, đó là Ðấng đã bắt đầu làm những việc tốt đẹp trong anh chị em sẽ tiếp tục công việc của Ngài cho đến khi hoàn tất trong ngày của Ðức Chúa Jesus Christ. 7 Tôi nghĩ về tất cả anh chị em như vậy cũng đúng thôi, bởi vì anh chị em luôn ở trong lòng tôi. Dù khi tôi mang xiềng xích hay khi tôi biện hộ và chứng thực chân lý của Tin Mừng, tất cả anh chị em đều dự phần vào ân sủng với tôi. 8 Vì Ðức Chúa Trời có thể làm chứng cho tôi rằng tôi thương nhớ anh chị em bằng tình yêu của Ðức Chúa Jesus Christ biết bao.
9 Ðiều tôi cầu nguyện là tình yêu của anh chị em mỗi ngày một gia tăng, để anh chị em có kiến thức sâu sắc và nhận xét chính xác, 10 giúp anh chị em có thể xác định điều nào là tốt nhất, hầu trong ngày của Ðấng Christ anh chị em được trong sạch và vẹn toàn, 11 đầy những trái của đức công chính đến từ Ðức Chúa Jesus Christ, đem vinh hiển và ca ngợi về Ðức Chúa Trời.
Ðạo Chúa Phát Triển giữa Nghịch Cảnh
12 Thưa anh chị em,[a] tôi muốn anh chị em biết rằng những gì xảy ra cho tôi đã giúp cho Tin Mừng thêm phát triển, 13 đến nỗi cả quân đoàn bảo vệ hoàng cung và mọi người khác đều biết rằng tôi vì Ðấng Christ mà mang xiềng xích, 14 và khi biết tôi bị xiềng xích, nhiều anh chị em tin Chúa càng mạnh mẽ hơn và càng dạn dĩ rao giảng lời Đức Chúa Trời[b] hơn, chẳng sợ hãi gì.
15 Thật ra một số người rao giảng Ðấng Christ vì ganh tị và cạnh tranh, nhưng một số khác rao giảng vì ý tốt. 16 Những người rao giảng vì ý tốt làm thế vì tình yêu, biết rằng tôi được bổ nhiệm để binh vực Tin Mừng; 17 còn những người rao giảng Ðấng Christ vì tham vọng cá nhân[c] thay vì động cơ trong sạch, thiết tưởng chỉ tạo thêm khổ cho tôi trong khi mang xiềng xích thôi. 18 Nhưng rồi sao? Ðàng nào cũng được, dù giả vờ hay thành thật, Ðấng Christ vẫn được rao giảng; và như thế là tôi vui rồi, phải, và tôi sẽ tiếp tục vui, 19 vì tôi biết rằng nhờ lời cầu nguyện của anh chị em và nhờ sự giúp đỡ của Ðức Thánh Linh của Ðức Chúa Jesus Christ, tôi sẽ sớm được giải thoát.[d]
20 Tôi thiết tha mong đợi và hy vọng rằng tôi sẽ không bị hổ thẹn vì bất cứ lý do gì, nhưng bây giờ hay lúc nào cũng thế, tôi nói cách dạn dĩ, để dù sống hay chết, Ðấng Christ vẫn được tôn cao trong thân xác tôi. 21 Vì đối với tôi, sống là Ðấng Christ, và chết là lợi. 22 Nhưng nếu tôi được tiếp tục sống trong thân xác, có nghĩa là tôi sẽ làm việc sao cho có kết quả, tôi thật không biết phải chọn điều nào. 23 Tôi đang bị giằng co giữa hai điều: một đàng, tôi muốn được ra đi để ở với Ðấng Christ, đó là điều tốt hơn cho tôi; 24 một đàng khác, tôi được tiếp tục ở lại trong thân xác nầy, đó là điều cần hơn cho anh chị em. 25 Vì có niềm tin quả quyết về điều thứ hai nầy, tôi biết rằng tôi sẽ còn ở lại và sẽ tiếp tục sống với tất cả anh chị em để giúp anh chị em tăng trưởng và vui vẻ trong đức tin. 26 Như thế, khi tôi trở lại thăm anh chị em, thì vì cớ tôi, anh chị em có thể hãnh diện nhiều hơn trong Ðức Chúa Jesus Christ.
Chiến Ðấu cho Ðức Tin
27 Tôi chỉ mong anh chị em sống xứng đáng với Tin Mừng của Ðấng Christ, để hoặc đến thăm anh chị em, hoặc vắng mặt, tôi có thể nghe tin về anh chị em rằng anh chị em đang đứng vững, cùng một tinh thần, cùng một chí hướng, chiến đấu bên nhau cho đức tin của Tin Mừng, 28 và không sợ những kẻ chống đối anh chị em bất cứ điều gì. Đây là dấu hiệu của sự hủy diệt sẽ đến với họ, còn anh chị em sẽ được cứu, và đó cũng là điều đến từ Ðức Chúa Trời, 29 vì Ðức Chúa Trời không những đã ban cho anh chị em đặc ân tin Ðấng Christ, nhưng cũng chịu khổ vì Ngài nữa, 30 tức tham dự cùng một cuộc chiến mà anh chị em đã thấy tôi đương đầu trước kia, và nay vẫn còn nghe tôi đang tiếp tục.

1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,
4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,
5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;
6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
7 Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.
8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;
10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.
11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
12 But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;
13 So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;
14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:
16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:
17 But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.
18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.
19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
20 According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.
23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:
24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.
25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;
26 That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.
27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
28 And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.
29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;
30 Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
Philippians 1
New International Reader's Version
1 We, Paul and Timothy, are writing this letter. We serve Christ Jesus.
We are sending this letter to you, all God’s holy people in Philippi. You belong to Christ Jesus. We are also sending this letter to your leaders and deacons.
2 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
Paul Prays and Gives Thanks
3 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy. 5 I am happy because you have joined me in spreading the good news. You have done so from the first day until now. 6 God began a good work in you. And I am sure that he will carry it on until it is completed. That will be on the day Christ Jesus returns.
7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you. I love you with all my heart. I may be held by chains, or I may be standing up for the truth of the good news. Either way, all of you share in God’s grace together with me. 8 God is my witness that I long for all of you. I love you with the love that Christ Jesus gives.
9 I pray that your love will grow more and more. And let it be based on knowledge and understanding. 10 Then you will be able to know what is best. Then you will be pure and without blame for the day that Christ returns. 11 You will be filled with the fruit of right living produced by Jesus Christ. All these things bring glory and praise to God.
Paul Spreads the Good News While in Prison
12 Brothers and sisters, here is what I want you to know. What has happened to me has actually helped to spread the good news. 13 One thing has become clear. I am being held by chains because I am a witness for Christ. All the palace guards and everyone else know it. 14 And because I am a prisoner, most of the believers have become bolder in the Lord. They now dare even more to preach the good news without fear.
15 It’s true that some preach about Christ because they are jealous. But others preach about Christ to help me in my work. 16 The last group acts out of love. They know I have been put here to be a witness for the good news. 17 But the others preach about Christ only to get ahead. They preach Christ for the wrong reasons. They think they can stir up trouble for me while I am being held by chains. 18 But what does it matter? Here is the important thing. Whether for right or wrong reasons, Christ is being preached about. That makes me very glad.
And I will continue to be glad. 19 I know that you are praying for me. I also know that God will give me the Spirit of Jesus Christ to help me. So no matter what happens, I’m sure I will still be set free. 20 I completely expect and hope that I won’t be ashamed in any way. I’m sure I will be brave enough. Now as always Christ will receive glory because of what happens to me. He will receive glory whether I live or die. 21 For me, life finds all its meaning in Christ. Death also has its benefits. 22 Suppose I go on living in my body. Then I will be able to carry on my work. It will bear a lot of fruit. But what should I choose? I don’t know! 23 I can’t decide between the two. I long to leave this world and be with Christ. That is better by far. 24 But it is more important for you that I stay alive. 25 I’m sure of this. So I know I will remain with you. And I will continue with all of you to help you grow in your faith. I will also continue to help you be joyful in what you have been taught. 26 I’m sure I will be with you again. Then you will be able to boast in Christ Jesus even more because of me.
Living to Honor the Good News
27 No matter what happens, live in a way that brings honor to the good news about Christ. Then I will know that you remain strong together in the one Spirit. I will know this if I come and see you or only hear about you. I will know that you work together as one person. I will know that you work to spread the teachings about the good news. 28 So don’t be afraid in any way of those who oppose you. This will show them that they will be destroyed and that you will be saved. That’s what God will do. 29 Here is what he has given you to do for Christ. You must not only believe in him. You must also suffer for him. 30 You are going through the same struggle you saw me go through. As you have heard, I am still struggling.
