2 Ano't tinakpan ng Panginoon ang anak na babae ng Sion ng alapaap sa kaniyang galit! Kaniyang inihagis mula sa langit hanggang sa lupa ang kagandahan ng Israel, at hindi inalaala ang kaniyang tungtungan ng paa sa kaarawan ng kaniyang galit.
2 Nilamon ng Panginoon ang lahat na tahanan ng Jacob, at siya'y hindi naawa: Kanyang ibinagsak sa kaniyang poot ang mga katibayan ng anak na babae ng Juda; kaniyang inilugmok ang mga yaon sa lupa: kaniyang ipinahamak ang kaharian at ang mga prinsipe niyaon.
3 Kaniyang inihiwalay sa pamamagitan ng mabangis na galit ang buong sungay ng Israel; kaniyang iniurong ang kaniyang kanang kamay sa harap ng kaaway: at kaniyang sinilaban ang Jacob na parang maalab na apoy, na namumugnaw sa palibot.
4 Kaniyang iniakma ang kaniyang busog na parang kaaway, kaniyang iniyamba ang kaniyang kanan na parang kalaban, at pinatay ang lahat na maligaya sa mata: sa tolda ng anak na babae ng Sion ay kaniyang ibinuhos ang kaniyang kapusukan na parang apoy.
5 Ang Panginoon ay naging parang kaaway, kaniyang nilamon ang Israel; kaniyang nilamon ang lahat niyang palacio, kaniyang iginiba ang kaniyang mga katibayan; at kaniyang pinarami sa anak na babae ng Juda ang panangis at panaghoy.
6 At kaniyang inalis na may karahasan ang tabernakulo niya na gaya ng nasa halamanan; kaniyang sinira ang kaniyang mga dako ng kapulungan: ipinalimot ng Panginoon ang takdang kapulungan at sabbath sa Sion, at hinamak sa pagiinit ng kaniyang galit ang hari at ang saserdote.
7 Iniwasak ng Panginoon ang kaniyang dambana, kaniyang kinayamutan ang kaniyang santuario; kaniyang ibinigay sa kamay ng kaaway ang mga pader ng kaniyang mga palacio: sila'y nangagingay sa bahay ng Panginoon, na parang kaarawan ng takdang kapulungan.
8 Ipinasiya ng Panginoon na gibain ang kuta ng anak na babae ng Sion; kaniyang iniladlad ang lubid, hindi niya iniurong ang kaniyang kamay sa paggiba: at kaniyang pinapanaghoy ang moog at ang kuta; nanganglulupaypay kapuwa.
9 Ang kaniyang mga pintuang-bayan ay nangabaon sa lupa; kaniyang giniba at nasira ang kaniyang mga halang: ang kaniyang hari at ang kaniyang mga prinsipe ay nangasa gitna ng mga bansa na hindi kinaroroonan ng kautusan; Oo, ang kaniyang mga propeta ay hindi nangakakasumpong ng pangitaing mula sa Panginoon.
10 Ang mga matanda ng anak na babae ng Sion ay nangauupo sa lupa, sila'y nagsisitahimik; sila'y nangagsabog ng alabok sa kanilang mga ulo; sila'y nangagbigkis ng kayong magaspang: itinungo ng mga dalaga sa Jerusalem ang kanilang mga ulo sa lupa.
11 Pinangangalumata ng mga luha ang aking mga mata, namamanglaw ang aking puso, ako'y lubhang nahahapis, dahil sa pagkapahamak ng anak na babae ng aking bayan, dahil sa ang mga bata at ang mga pasusuhin ay nanganglulupaypay sa mga lansangan ng bayan.
12 Kanilang sinasabi sa kanilang mga ina, saan nandoon ang trigo at alak? Pagka sila'y nanganglulupaypay na parang sugatan sa mga lansangan sa bayan, pagka ang kanilang kaluluwa ay nanglulupaypay sa kandungan ng kanilang mga ina.
13 Ano ang aking patototohanan sa iyo? sa ano kita iwawangis, Oh anak na babae ng Jerusalem? Ano ang ihahalintulad ko sa iyo, upang maaliw kita, Oh anak na dalaga ng Sion? Sapagka't ang iyong sira ay malaking parang dagat: sinong makapagpapagaling sa iyo?
14 Ang iyong mga propeta ay nakakita para sa iyo ng mga pangitain na walang kabuluhan at kamangmangan; at hindi nila inilitaw ang iyong kasamaan, upang bawiin ang iyong pagkabihag, kundi nakarinig para sa iyo ng mga hulang walang kabuluhan at mga kadahilanan ng pagkatapon.
15 Lahat na nangagdaraan ay ipinapakpak ang kanilang kamay sa iyo; sila'y nagsisisutsot at iginagalaw ang kanilang ulo sa anak na babae ng Jerusalem, na sinasabi, Ito baga ang bayan na tinatawag ng mga tao Ang kasakdalan ng kagandahan, Ang kagalakan ng buong lupa?
16 Ibinukang maluwang ng lahat mong kaaway ang kanilang bibig laban sa iyo: sila'y nagsisisutsot at nagsisipagngalit ng ngipin; kanilang sinasabi, Aming nilamon siya; tunay na ito ang kaarawan na aming hinihintay; aming nasumpungan, aming nakita.
17 Ginawa ng Panginoon ang kaniyang ipinasiya; kaniyang tinupad ang kaniyang salita na kaniyang iniutos nang mga kaarawan nang una; kaniyang ibinagsak, at hindi naawa: at kaniyang pinapagkatuwa sa iyo ang kaaway; kaniyang pinataas ang sungay ng iyong mga kalaban.
18 Ang kanilang puso ay nagsisidaing sa Panginoon: Oh kuta ng anak na babae ng Sion, dumaloy ang mga luha na parang ilog araw at gabi; huwag kang magpahinga; huwag maglikat ang itim ng iyong mata.
19 Bumangon ka, humiyaw ka sa gabi, sa pasimula ng mga pagpupuyat; ibuhos mo ang iyong puso na parang tubig sa harap ng mukha ng Panginoon: igawad mo ang iyong mga kamay sa kaniya dahil sa buhay ng iyong mga batang anak, na nanglulupaypay sa gutom sa dulo ng lahat na lansangan.
20 Tingnan mo, Oh Panginoon, at masdan mo, kung kanino mo ginawa ang ganito! Kakanin baga ng mga babae ang kanilang ipinanganak, ang mga anak na kinakalong sa mga kamay? Papatayin baga ang saserdote at ang propeta sa santuario ng Panginoon?
21 Ang binata at ang matanda ay humihiga sa lupa sa mga lansangan; ang aking mga dalaga at ang aking mga binata ay nangabuwal sa tabak: iyong pinatay sila sa kaarawan ng iyong galit; iyong pinatay at hindi ka naawa.
22 Tinawag mo, gaya ng sa kaarawan ng takdang kapulungan, ang aking mga kakilabutan ay sa bawa't dako; at walang nakatanan, o nalabi sa kaarawan ng galit ng Panginoon: yaong aking mga kinalong at pinalaki ay nilipol ng aking kaaway.

2 [a]How the Lord has covered Daughter Zion
with the cloud of his anger[b]!(A)
He has hurled down the splendor of Israel
from heaven to earth;
he has not remembered his footstool(B)
in the day of his anger.(C)
2 Without pity(D) the Lord has swallowed(E) up
all the dwellings of Jacob;
in his wrath he has torn down
the strongholds(F) of Daughter Judah.
He has brought her kingdom and its princes
down to the ground(G) in dishonor.
3 In fierce anger he has cut off
every horn[c][d](H) of Israel.
He has withdrawn his right hand(I)
at the approach of the enemy.
He has burned in Jacob like a flaming fire
that consumes everything around it.(J)
4 Like an enemy he has strung his bow;(K)
his right hand is ready.
Like a foe he has slain
all who were pleasing to the eye;(L)
he has poured out his wrath(M) like fire(N)
on the tent(O) of Daughter Zion.
5 The Lord is like an enemy;(P)
he has swallowed up Israel.
He has swallowed up all her palaces

6 He has laid waste his dwelling like a garden;
he has destroyed(T) his place of meeting.(U)
The Lord has made Zion forget
her appointed festivals and her Sabbaths;(V)
in his fierce anger he has spurned
both king and priest.(W)
7 The Lord has rejected his altar
and abandoned his sanctuary.(X)
He has given the walls of her palaces(Y)
into the hands of the enemy;
they have raised a shout in the house of the Lord
as on the day of an appointed festival.(Z)
8 The Lord determined to tear down
the wall around Daughter Zion.(AA)
He stretched out a measuring line(AB)
and did not withhold his hand from destroying.
He made ramparts(AC) and walls lament;
together they wasted away.(AD)
9 Her gates(AE) have sunk into the ground;
their bars(AF) he has broken and destroyed.
Her king and her princes are exiled(AG) among the nations,
the law(AH) is no more,
and her prophets(AI) no longer find
visions(AJ) from the Lord.
10 The elders of Daughter Zion
sit on the ground in silence;(AK)
they have sprinkled dust(AL) on their heads(AM)
and put on sackcloth.(AN)
The young women of Jerusalem
have bowed their heads to the ground.(AO)
11 My eyes fail from weeping,(AP)
I am in torment within(AQ);
my heart(AR) is poured out(AS) on the ground
because my people are destroyed,(AT)
because children and infants faint(AU)
in the streets of the city.
12 They say to their mothers,
“Where is bread and wine?”(AV)
as they faint like the wounded
in the streets of the city,
as their lives ebb away(AW)
in their mothers’ arms.(AX)
13 What can I say for you?(AY)
With what can I compare you,
Daughter(AZ) Jerusalem?
To what can I liken you,
that I may comfort you,
Virgin Daughter Zion?(BA)
Your wound is as deep as the sea.(BB)
Who can heal you?
14 The visions of your prophets
were false(BC) and worthless;
they did not expose your sin
to ward off your captivity.(BD)
The prophecies they gave you
were false and misleading.(BE)
15 All who pass your way
clap their hands at you;(BF)
they scoff(BG) and shake their heads(BH)
at Daughter Jerusalem:(BI)
“Is this the city that was called
the perfection of beauty,(BJ)
the joy of the whole earth?”(BK)
16 All your enemies open their mouths
wide against you;(BL)
they scoff and gnash their teeth(BM)
and say, “We have swallowed her up.(BN)
This is the day we have waited for;
we have lived to see it.”(BO)
17 The Lord has done what he planned;
he has fulfilled(BP) his word,
which he decreed long ago.(BQ)
He has overthrown you without pity,(BR)
he has let the enemy gloat over you,(BS)
he has exalted the horn[e] of your foes.(BT)
18 The hearts of the people
cry out to the Lord.(BU)
You walls of Daughter Zion,(BV)
let your tears(BW) flow like a river
day and night;(BX)
give yourself no relief,
your eyes no rest.(BY)
19 Arise, cry out in the night,
as the watches of the night begin;
pour out your heart(BZ) like water
in the presence of the Lord.(CA)
Lift up your hands(CB) to him
for the lives of your children,
who faint(CC) from hunger
at every street corner.
20 “Look, Lord, and consider:
Whom have you ever treated like this?
Should women eat their offspring,(CD)
the children they have cared for?(CE)
Should priest and prophet be killed(CF)
in the sanctuary of the Lord?(CG)

2 How hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not his footstool in the day of his anger!
2 The Lord hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not pitied: he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah; he hath brought them down to the ground: he hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof.
3 He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about.
4 He hath bent his bow like an enemy: he stood with his right hand as an adversary, and slew all that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion: he poured out his fury like fire.
5 The Lord was as an enemy: he hath swallowed up Israel, he hath swallowed up all her palaces: he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.
6 And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden: he hath destroyed his places of the assembly: the Lord hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest.
7 The Lord hath cast off his altar, he hath abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the Lord, as in the day of a solemn feast.
8 The Lord hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion: he hath stretched out a line, he hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying: therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament; they languished together.
9 Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the Lord.
10 The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.
11 Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.
12 They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers' bosom.
13 What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee?
14 Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.
15 All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?
16 All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.
17 The Lord hath done that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not pitied: and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee, he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries.
18 Their heart cried unto the Lord, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease.
19 Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street.
20 Behold, O Lord, and consider to whom thou hast done this. Shall the women eat their fruit, and children of a span long? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?
21 The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed, and not pitied.
22 Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the Lord's anger none escaped nor remained: those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed.

The Lord Destroyed Jerusalem
2 Look how the Lord in his anger
has ·brought Jerusalem to shame [L treated the daughter of Zion with contempt; or brought a cloud over the daughter of Zion].
He has thrown down the ·greatness [splendor; beauty] of Israel
from the ·sky [heavens] to the earth;
he did not remember his footstool [C the Temple; Ps. 99:5; 132:7],
on the day of his anger.
2 The Lord swallowed up without ·mercy [pity]
all the ·houses [homes; dwellings] of the people of Jacob;
in his anger he ·pulled down [demolished]
the strong places of [L the daughter of] Judah.
He threw her kingdom and its rulers
down to the ground in dishonor.
3 In his anger he has ·removed [cut to pieces]
all the ·strength [L horn; C a symbol of pride and power] of Israel;
he took away his ·power [L right hand] from Israel
when the enemy came.
He burned against the people of Jacob [C another name for Israel] like a flaming fire
that burns up everything around it.
4 Like an enemy, he ·prepared to shoot [bent; drew] his bow,

5 The Lord was like an enemy;
he swallowed up Israel.

and destroyed all her strongholds.

he destroyed the meeting place.

He has ·rejected [despised] the king and the priest
in his great anger.
7 The Lord has rejected his altar
and ·abandoned [disavowed] his ·Temple [L Holy Place; Ezek. 9–11].
He has ·handed over to [L delivered into the hand of] the enemy
the walls of its [C probably Jerusalem’s] palaces.
·Their uproar [L They gave forth voice] in the Lord’s ·Temple [L house]
was like that of a feast day.
8 The Lord planned to destroy
the wall around ·Jerusalem [L the daughter of Zion; C the location of the Temple].
He ·measured the wall [L extended a measuring line; C usually used in construction but here in demolition]
and did not stop himself from ·destroying [L swallowing] it.
He made the walls and ·defenses [ramparts] ·sad [mourn];
together they have ·fallen [languished].
9 ·Jerusalem’s [L Its] gates have ·fallen [sunk] to the ground;
he destroyed and smashed the bars [C of the gates; Ps. 107:16; Is. 45:2; Jer. 51:30; Nah. 3:13].
Her king and her princes are among the nations.
The ·teaching [law; instruction; C God’s law] has stopped,
and the prophets do not have
visions from the Lord.
10 The elders of ·Jerusalem [L the daughter of Zion; C the location of the Temple]
sit on the ground in silence.
They throw dust on their heads
and put on ·rough cloth [sackcloth; burlap; signs of grief or repentance].
The young women of Jerusalem
bow their heads to the ground [C in sorrow].
11 My eyes ·have no more tears [L are exhausted from tears],
and ·I am sick to my stomach [L my innards/stomach/bowels are agitated].
·I feel empty inside [L My bile/gall is poured out on the ground],
because ·my people [L the daughter of my people] have been ·destroyed [shattered; broken].
Children and ·babies [nurslings] are fainting

12 They ask their mothers,
“Where is the grain and wine?”
They faint like wounded soldiers
in the ·streets [public areas] of the city

13 What can I ·say [testify] about you, [L daughter] Jerusalem?
What can I compare you to?
What can I say you are like?
How can I comfort you, ·Jerusalem [L virgin daughter Zion; C location of the Temple]?
Your ·ruin [wound] is as ·deep [great] as the sea.
·No one [L Who…?] can heal you.
14 Your prophets saw visions,
but they were ·false [empty] and ·worth nothing [insipid; nonsense; Ezek. 10:10–12].
They did not ·point out [expose] your ·sins [guilt]
to ·keep you from being captured [or restore your fortunes].
They ·preached what was [L saw oracles for you that were] ·false [empty]
and ·led you wrongly [fraudulent].
15 All who pass by on the road
clap their hands at you [C in approval of Jerusalem’s destruction; Ezek. 25:6];
they ·make fun of [hiss at; C in scorn; 1 Kin. 9:8; Jer. 19:8; Zeph. 2:15] [L the daughter of] Jerusalem
and shake their heads.
They ask, “Is this the city that people called
the most beautiful city,
the ·happiest place on [joy of the whole] earth [Ps. 48:2]?”
16 All your enemies ·open [L crack] their mouths
to speak against you.
They make fun and ·grind [gnash] their teeth [C in anger].
They say, “We have swallowed you up.
This is the day we were ·waiting [hoping] for!
We have finally seen it happen.”
17 The Lord has done what he planned;
he has ·kept [fulfilled] his ·word [threat; C the covenant curses; Deut. 28:45–50]
that he commanded ·long ago [L in days of old].
He has ·destroyed [demolished] without ·mercy [pity],
and he has let your enemies laugh at you [C such as Edom; Obad. 1–21].
He has ·strengthened [L exalted the horn of; C symbol of pride and power] your enemies.
18 ·The people [L Their hearts] cry out to the Lord.
Wall of ·Jerusalem [L the daughter of Zion; C the location of the Temple],
let your tears flow
like a ·river [torrent; wadi] day and night.
Do not ·stop [L allow yourself relaxation]
or let your eyes rest.
19 Get up, cry out in the night,
·even as the night begins [L at the beginning of the night watches; C the night was divided into three four-hour watches].
Pour out your heart like water
·in prayer to [L before the presence/face of] the Lord.
Lift up your hands in prayer to him
for the life of your children
who are ·fainting [growing weak] with hunger
·on every street corner [L at the head of every street].
20 Jerusalem says: “Look, Lord, and see
to whom you have done this.
·Women [L Should women…?] eat their own ·babies [L fruit; C short for “fruit of their womb”],
the children ·they have cared for [they have nursed/borne; or which are well-formed; Deut. 28:53–55; Jer. 19:6–9].
·Priests and prophets are [L Should priests and prophets be…?] killed

21 “People young and old
lie outside on the ground.
My young women and young men
have ·been killed [L fallen] by the sword.
You killed them on the day of your anger;
you ·killed [slaughtered] them without ·mercy [pity].
22 “You invited ·terrors [or enemies] to come against me on every side,
as if ·you were inviting them to a feast [L on an appointed/feast day].
No one escaped or remained alive
on the day of the Lord’s anger.
My enemy has ·killed [annihilated]
those I ·cared for [nursed; bore] and brought up.”
