Ieremia este aruncat într-un puţ
38 Şefatia, fiul lui Matan, Ghedalia, fiul lui Paşhur, Iehucal[a], fiul lui Şelemia şi Paşhur, fiul lui Malchia, au auzit cuvintele pe care Ieremia le rostea înaintea întregului popor. El spunea:
2 „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Cel care va mai rămâne în cetatea aceasta va fi ucis de sabie, de foamete şi de molimă, dar cel care va ieşi şi se va duce la caldeeni va trăi. Prada lui va fi însăşi viaţa lui şi astfel el va trăi.»“
3 „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Această cetate va fi dată cu siguranţă în mâinile oştirii împăratului Babilonului, care o va cuceri.»“
4 Atunci conducătorii poporului i-au zis regelui:
– Omul acesta ar trebui omorât, căci descurajează ostaşii care au mai rămas în cetate şi întreg poporul prin cuvântările pe care le ţine. Omul acesta nu caută binele poporului, ci nenorocirea lui.
5 Regele Zedechia le-a răspuns:
– Iată, el este în mâinile voastre, căci regele nu poate face nimic împotriva cuvintelor voastre.
6 Ei l-au luat pe Ieremia şi l-au aruncat în puţul lui Malchia, fiul regelui, care era în curtea temniţei. Ei l-au coborât înăuntru cu nişte funii. Acolo nu era apă, ci doar noroi, astfel că Ieremia s-a afundat în noroi.
7 Însă cuşitul[b] Ebed-Melek, un eunuc de la palatul regelui, auzise că Ieremia fusese aruncat într-un puţ. În timp ce regele stătea la Poarta lui Beniamin, 8 Ebed-Melek a ieşit din palat şi i-a zis:
9 – Stăpâne, regele meu, oamenii aceştia s-au purtat cu răutate prin tot ce i-au făcut profetului Ieremia. Ei l-au aruncat într-un puţ şi va muri de foame acolo, căci nu mai este pâine în cetate!
10 Atunci regele a poruncit cuşitului Ebed-Melek:
– Ia de aici treizeci de oameni cu tine şi scoate-l pe profetul Ieremia din puţ, până nu moare!
11 Ebed-Melek i-a luat cu el pe oamenii aceia, s-au dus într-o odaie aflată sub vistieria palatului şi au luat de acolo nişte zdrenţe vechi şi nişte haine purtate, pe care le-au coborât apoi cu nişte funii în puţul în care era Ieremia. 12 Atunci cuşitul Ebed-Melek i-a zis lui Ieremia: „Pune-ţi aceste zdrenţe şi aceste haine vechi sub subsuori şi apoi leagă-ţi funia de jur împrejur.“ Ieremia a făcut aşa, 13 iar ei l-au tras cu funiile şi l-au scos din puţ. Ieremia a rămas în curtea temniţei.
Zedechia îi cere iarăşi sfatul lui Ieremia
14 După aceea, regele Zedechia a trimis după profetul Ieremia şi acesta a fost adus la intrarea a treia a Casei Domnului.
– Te voi întreba ceva, i-a zis regele, dar să nu-mi ascunzi nimic.
15 Ieremia i-a răspuns lui Zedechia:
– Dacă-ţi voi răspunde, nu mă vei ucide oare? Şi dacă-ţi voi da un sfat, mă vei asculta tu oare?
16 Regele Zedechia i-a jurat lui Ieremia în secret şi i-a zis:
– Viu este Domnul, Care ne-a dat viaţă, că nu te voi ucide şi nu te voi da în mâinile celor ce caută să-ţi ia viaţa!
17 Atunci Ieremia i-a zis lui Zedechia:
– Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul Oştirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel: „Dacă te vei preda conducătorilor împăratului Babilonului, vei rămâne în viaţă şi cetăţii acesteia nu i se va da foc; astfel tu şi familia ta veţi trăi. 18 Dar, dacă nu te vei preda conducătorilor împăratului Babilonului, cetatea aceasta va fi dată în mâinile caldeenilor, care îi vor da foc, iar tu nu vei scăpa din mâinile lor!“
19 Regele Zedechia i-a zis lui Ieremia:
– Mi-e frică de iudeii care s-au dus de partea caldeenilor, ca nu cumva să fiu dat în mâinile lor, iar ei să mă maltrateze.
20 – Nu te vor da, i-a răspuns Ieremia. Acum ascultă glasul Domnului şi fă ce ţi-am spus. Doar aşa îţi va merge bine şi vei rămâne în viaţă. 21 Dar, dacă refuzi să te predai, iată ce mi-a descoperit Domnul: 22 „Toate femeile care au mai rămas în palatul regelui lui Iuda vor fi duse la conducătorii împăratului Babilonului. Ele îţi vor zice:
«Prietenii tăi de încredere
te-au ademenit şi te-au înduplecat!
Acum că ţi s-au afundat picioarele în noroi,
prietenii tăi ţi-au întors spatele!»
23 Toate soţiile şi toţi copiii tăi vor fi duşi la caldeeni. Nici tu nu vei scăpa din mâinile lor, căci vei fi prins de împăratul Babilonului, iar cetăţii acesteia i se va da foc[c].“
24 Zedechia i-a zis lui Ieremia:
– Să nu spui nimănui nimic din cuvintele acestea şi nu vei muri. 25 Iar dacă conducătorii vor auzi că am vorbit cu tine şi dacă vor veni şi te vor întreba: „Spune-ne ce i-ai zis regelui? Nu ne ascunde nimic şi nu te vom ucide! Şi ce ţi-a răspuns regele?“, 26 să le răspunzi astfel: „L-am rugat pe rege să nu mă trimită iarăşi în casa lui Ionatan, ca nu cumva să mor acolo.“
27 Toţi conducătorii au venit la Ieremia şi l-au întrebat, iar el le-a zis toate cuvintele pe care regele i-a poruncit să le spună. Atunci ei nu i-au mai spus nimic, căci nici unul nu auzise discuţia cu regele.
28 Ieremia a rămas astfel în curtea temniţei până în ziua în care a fost cucerit Ierusalimul.

38 瑪坦的兒子示法提雅、巴施戶珥的兒子基大利、示利米雅的兒子猶甲、瑪基雅的兒子巴施戶珥聽見了耶利米對眾人說： 2 「耶和華說，『凡留在這城的，必死於刀劍、饑荒和瘟疫；凡出去向迦勒底人投降的，必保全性命。』 3 耶和華說，『這城必落在巴比倫王的軍隊手中，他們必攻佔這城。』」 4 這幾位官長就對西底迦王說：「求你處死這人！因為他的話令這城的軍民士氣低落。這人不為人民著想，反要害他們。」 5 西底迦王說：「你們可以隨意處置他，我不會阻止你們。」 6 於是，他們拿住耶利米，用繩子把他縋到王子瑪基雅的蓄水池裡。那池子在護衛兵的院子裡，池中沒有水，只有淤泥。耶利米就陷在淤泥中。

23 「你的嬪妃和兒女必被交給迦勒底人，你也逃不掉，必被巴比倫王所擒。這城也要被付之一炬。」
24 西底迦說：「不可讓人知道我們的談話，否則你會喪命。 25 如果有官長知道我曾與你會面，前來以死亡相威脅，逼你說出我們談話的內容。 26 你可以告訴他們，你是在求我不要把你押回約拿單的房子，以免死在那裡。」 27 果然，官長前來查問耶利米，他就照王的吩咐回覆他們，他們便不再追問，因為他跟王的談話無人知道。 28 耶利米被囚在護衛兵的院子裡，一直到耶路撒冷淪陷。

Jeremiah Thrown Into a Cistern
38 Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur(A), Jehukal[a](B) son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah was telling all the people when he said, 2 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague,(C) but whoever goes over to the Babylonians[b] will live. They will escape with their lives; they will live.’(D) 3 And this is what the Lord says: ‘This city will certainly be given into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.’”(E)
4 Then the officials(F) said to the king, “This man should be put to death.(G) He is discouraging(H) the soldiers who are left in this city, as well as all the people, by the things he is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their ruin.”
5 “He is in your hands,”(I) King Zedekiah answered. “The king can do nothing(J) to oppose you.”
6 So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard.(K) They lowered Jeremiah by ropes(L) into the cistern; it had no water in it,(M) only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.(N)
7 But Ebed-Melek,(O) a Cushite,[c] an official[d](P) in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,(Q) 8 Ebed-Melek went out of the palace and said to him, 9 “My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern,(R) where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread(S) in the city.”
10 Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Cushite, “Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”
11 So Ebed-Melek took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes(T) to Jeremiah in the cistern. 12 Ebed-Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so, 13 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.(U)
Zedekiah Questions Jeremiah Again
14 Then King Zedekiah sent(V) for Jeremiah the prophet and had him brought to the third entrance to the temple of the Lord. “I am going to ask you something,” the king said to Jeremiah. “Do not hide(W) anything from me.”
15 Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I give you an answer, will you not kill me? Even if I did give you counsel, you would not listen to me.”
16 But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly(X) to Jeremiah: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has given us breath,(Y) I will neither kill you nor hand you over to those who want to kill you.”(Z)
17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you surrender(AA) to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live.(AB) 18 But if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be given into the hands(AC) of the Babylonians and they will burn(AD) it down; you yourself will not escape(AE) from them.’”
19 King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid(AF) of the Jews who have gone over(AG) to the Babylonians, for the Babylonians may hand me over to them and they will mistreat me.”
20 “They will not hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “Obey(AH) the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well(AI) with you, and your life(AJ) will be spared. 21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the Lord has revealed to me: 22 All the women(AK) left in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon. Those women will say to you:
“‘They misled you and overcame you—
those trusted friends(AL) of yours.
Your feet are sunk in the mud;(AM)
your friends have deserted you.’
23 “All your wives and children(AN) will be brought out to the Babylonians. You yourself will not escape(AO) from their hands but will be captured(AP) by the king of Babylon; and this city will[e] be burned down.”(AQ)
24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Do not let anyone know(AR) about this conversation, or you may die. 25 If the officials hear that I talked with you, and they come to you and say, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us or we will kill you,’ 26 then tell(AS) them, ‘I was pleading with the king not to send me back to Jonathan’s house(AT) to die there.’”
27 All the officials did come to Jeremiah and question him, and he told them everything the king had ordered him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had heard his conversation with the king.
28 And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard(AU) until the day Jerusalem was captured.
