La señal del alfarero y el barro
18 Palabra de Jehová que vino a Jeremías, diciendo: 2 Levántate y vete a casa del alfarero, y allí te haré oír mis palabras. 3 Y descendí a casa del alfarero, y he aquí que él trabajaba sobre la rueda. 4 Y la vasija de barro que él hacía se echó a perder en su mano; y volvió y la hizo otra vasija, según le pareció mejor hacerla.
5 Entonces vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 6 ¿No podré yo hacer de vosotros como este alfarero, oh casa de Israel? dice Jehová. He aquí que como el barro en la mano del alfarero, así sois vosotros en mi mano, oh casa de Israel. 7 En un instante hablaré contra pueblos y contra reinos, para arrancar, y derribar, y destruir. 8 Pero si esos pueblos se convirtieren de su maldad contra la cual hablé, yo me arrepentiré del mal que había pensado hacerles, 9 y en un instante hablaré de la gente y del reino, para edificar y para plantar. 10 Pero si hiciere lo malo delante de mis ojos, no oyendo mi voz, me arrepentiré del bien que había determinado hacerle.
11 Ahora, pues, habla luego a todo hombre de Judá y a los moradores de Jerusalén, diciendo: Así ha dicho Jehová: He aquí que yo dispongo mal contra vosotros, y trazo contra vosotros designios; conviértase ahora cada uno de su mal camino, y mejore sus caminos y sus obras. 12 Y dijeron: Es en vano; porque en pos de nuestros ídolos iremos, y haremos cada uno el pensamiento de nuestro malvado corazón.
13 Por tanto, así dijo Jehová: Preguntad ahora a las naciones, quién ha oído cosa semejante. Gran fealdad ha hecho la virgen de Israel. 14 ¿Faltará la nieve del Líbano de la piedra del campo? ¿Faltarán las aguas frías que corren de lejanas tierras? 15 Porque mi pueblo me ha olvidado, incensando a lo que es vanidad, y ha tropezado en sus caminos, en las sendas antiguas, para que camine por sendas y no por camino transitado, 16 para poner su tierra en desolación, objeto de burla perpetua; todo aquel que pasare por ella se asombrará, y meneará la cabeza. 17 Como viento solano los esparciré delante del enemigo; les mostraré las espaldas y no el rostro, en el día de su perdición.
Conspiración del pueblo y oración de Jeremías
18 Y dijeron: Venid y maquinemos contra Jeremías; porque la ley no faltará al sacerdote, ni el consejo al sabio, ni la palabra al profeta. Venid e hirámoslo de lengua, y no atendamos a ninguna de sus palabras.
19 Oh Jehová, mira por mí, y oye la voz de los que contienden conmigo. 20 ¿Se da mal por bien, para que hayan cavado hoyo a mi alma? Acuérdate que me puse delante de ti para hablar bien por ellos, para apartar de ellos tu ira. 21 Por tanto, entrega sus hijos a hambre, dispérsalos por medio de la espada, y queden sus mujeres sin hijos, y viudas; y sus maridos sean puestos a muerte, y sus jóvenes heridos a espada en la guerra. 22 Óigase clamor de sus casas, cuando traigas sobre ellos ejército de repente; porque cavaron hoyo para prenderme, y a mis pies han escondido lazos. 23 Pero tú, oh Jehová, conoces todo su consejo contra mí para muerte; no perdones su maldad, ni borres su pecado de delante de tu rostro; y tropiecen delante de ti; haz así con ellos en el tiempo de tu enojo.

Parábola del alfarero
18 Esta es la palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del Señor: 2 «Levántate y baja ahora mismo a la casa del alfarero y allí te comunicaré mi mensaje».
3 Entonces bajé a la casa del alfarero y lo encontré trabajando en el torno. 4 Pero la vasija que estaba modelando se deshizo en sus manos; así que volvió a hacer otra vasija, hasta que le pareció que había quedado bien.
5 En ese momento la palabra del Señor vino a mí y me dijo: 6 «Pueblo de Israel, ¿acaso no puedo hacer con ustedes lo mismo que hace este alfarero con el barro?», afirma el Señor. «Ustedes, pueblo de Israel, son en mis manos como el barro en las manos del alfarero. 7 En un momento puedo hablar de arrancar, derribar y destruir a una nación o a un reino; 8 pero si la nación de la cual hablé se arrepiente de su maldad, también yo desistiré del castigo que había pensado infligirles. 9 En otro momento puedo hablar de construir y plantar a una nación o a un reino. 10 Pero si esa nación hace lo malo ante mis ojos y no me obedece, yo desistiré del bien que había pensado hacerles. 11 Y ahora habla con los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén y adviérteles que así dice el Señor: “Estoy preparando una calamidad contra ustedes y elaborando un plan en su contra. ¡Vuélvanse ya de su mal camino; enmienden su conducta y sus acciones!”. 12 Ellos objetarán: “Es inútil. Vamos a seguir nuestros propios planes” y cada uno cometerá la maldad que dicte su obstinado corazón».
13 Por eso, así dice el Señor:
«Pregunten entre las naciones:
¿Quién ha oído algo semejante?
La virginal Israel
ha cometido algo terrible.
14 ¿Acaso la nieve del Líbano
desaparece de las laderas rocosas?
¿Se agotan las aguas frías
que fluyen de las montañas?[a]
15 Sin embargo, mi pueblo me ha olvidado;
quema incienso a ídolos inútiles,
que los hicieron tropezar en sus caminos,
en los senderos antiguos.
Los hicieron caminar
por sendas y veredas escabrosas.
16 Así ha dejado desolada su tierra;
la ha hecho objeto de burla constante.
Todo el que pase por allí
meneará atónito la cabeza.
17 Como un viento del este,
los esparciré delante del enemigo.
En el día de su calamidad
les daré la espalda y no la cara».
18 Ellos dijeron: «Vengan, tramemos un plan contra Jeremías. Porque no faltará la Ley al sacerdote, ni el consejo al sabio, ni la palabra al profeta. Ataquémoslo de palabra y no hagamos caso de nada de lo que diga».
19 ¡Señor, préstame atención!
¡Escucha a los que me acusan!
20 ¿Acaso el bien se paga con el mal?
¡Pues ellos me han cavado una fosa!
Recuerda que me presenté ante ti
para interceder por ellos,
para apartar de ellos tu ira.
21 Por eso, entrega ahora sus hijos al hambre;
abandónalos a merced de la espada.
Que sus esposas se queden viudas y sin hijos;
que sus maridos mueran asesinados
y que sus jóvenes caigan en combate a filo de espada.
22 Que se oigan los gritos desde sus casas,
cuando de repente mandes contra ellos invasores.
Han cavado una fosa para atraparme,
y han puesto trampas a mi paso.
23 Pero tú, Señor, conoces
todos sus planes para matarme.
¡No perdones su iniquidad
ni borres de tu presencia sus pecados!
¡Que caigan derribados ante ti!
¡Enfréntate a ellos en el momento de tu ira!

18 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
2 Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.
3 Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.
4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.
7 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;
8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.
9 And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;
10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.
11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.
12 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.
13 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.
14 Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?
15 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;
16 To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head.
17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.
18 Then said they, Come and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.
19 Give heed to me, O Lord, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.
20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.
21 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.
22 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.
23 Yet, Lord, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.

The Potter and the Clay
18 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Come, go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.”(A) 3 So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. 4 The vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as seemed good to him.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 6 Can I not do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the Lord. Just like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.(B) 7 At one moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, 8 but if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will change my mind about the disaster that I intended to bring on it.(C) 9 And at another moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it,(D) 10 but if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will change my mind about the good that I had intended to do to it.(E) 11 Now, therefore, say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Thus says the Lord: Look, I am a potter shaping evil against you and devising a plan against you. Turn now, all of you, from your evil way, and amend your ways and your doings.(F)
Israel’s Stubborn Idolatry
12 But they say, “It is no use! We will follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the stubbornness of our evil will.”(G)
13 Therefore thus says the Lord:
Ask among the nations:
Who has heard the like of this?
The virgin Israel has done
a most horrible thing.(H)
14 Does the snow of Lebanon leave
the crags of Sirion?[a]
Do the mountain[b] waters run dry,[c]
the cold flowing streams?
15 But my people have forgotten me;
they burn offerings to a delusion;
they have stumbled[d] in their ways,
in the ancient roads,
and have gone into bypaths,
not the highway,(I)
16 making their land a horror,
a thing to be hissed at forever.
All who pass by it are horrified
and shake their heads.(J)
17 Like the wind from the east,
I will scatter them before the enemy.
I will show them my back, not my face,
in the day of their calamity.(K)
A Plot against Jeremiah
18 Then they said, “Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for instruction shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us bring charges against him,[e] and let us not heed any of his words.”(L)
19 Give heed to me, O Lord,
and listen to what my adversaries say!
20 Is evil a recompense for good?
Yet they have dug a pit for my life.
Remember how I stood before you
to speak good for them,
to turn away your wrath from them.(M)
21 Therefore give their children over to famine;
hurl them out to the power of the sword;
let their wives become childless and widowed.
May their men meet death by pestilence,
their youths be slain by the sword in battle.(N)
22 May a cry be heard from their houses
when you bring the marauder suddenly upon them!
For they have dug a pit to catch me
and laid snares for my feet.(O)
23 Yet you, O Lord, know
all their plotting to kill me.
Do not forgive their iniquity;
do not blot out their sin from your sight.
Let them be tripped up before you;
deal with them while you are angry.(P)
