以婚姻為例
7 弟兄們，我現在對明白律法的人說：難道你們不明白，律法只是在一個人活著的時候轄制這個人嗎？ 2 要知道，已婚的女人，在丈夫活著的時候，是被律法約束的；但如果丈夫死了，她就脫離了那關於丈夫的律法。 3 由此可見，丈夫還活著的時候，她如果歸向別的男人，就被稱為淫婦；但如果丈夫死了，她就脫離那律法得了自由，即使歸向別的男人，也不是淫婦。
4 因此，我的弟兄們，你們藉著基督的身體，在律法上也被處死了，使你們歸向另一位，就是從死人中復活的那一位，好讓我們能為神結出果子來。 5 原來，當我們還在肉體中的時候，罪的欲望藉著律法在我們身體的各部分[a]做工，以致為死亡結了果子。 6 但如今，我們既然在那捆綁我們的律法上死了，就脫離了律法，結果我們得以按照聖靈的新樣式來服事，而不按照律法條文的舊樣式。
罪藉著誡命
7 那麼，我們要怎麼說呢？難道律法是罪嗎？絕對不是！然而，要不是藉著律法，我就不知道什麼是罪。如果律法沒有說「不可貪心」[b]，我就不知道什麼是貪心； 8 但是，罪藉著誡命，趁機在我裡面生出種種貪念。原來在律法之外，罪是死的。 9 我從前活在律法之外，但是誡命一來，罪就活起來了， 10 我卻死了。於是我發現，那本該帶來生命的誡命，它卻導致了死亡。 11 事實上，罪藉著誡命趁機欺騙了我，並藉著誡命殺了我。 12 因此，律法是神聖的，誡命也是神聖、公義、美善的。
內在的罪
13 那麼，是那美善的導致了我的死嗎？[c]絕對不是！而是罪。罪為要顯出是罪，就藉著那美善的帶來了我的死，使罪藉著誡命變得極其邪惡。 14 我們知道律法是屬靈的；而我是屬肉體的，已經賣給罪了。 15 實際上，我所做的，我不明白，因為我所願意的，我沒有去做；我所恨惡的，我反而去做。 16 那麼，如果我做我不願意做的事，我就贊同了律法是好的。 17 所以現在這事就不再是我所做的，而是住在我裡面的罪所做的。 18 事實上，我知道在我裡面，就是在我肉體中，沒有良善；因為行善的意願在我裡面，卻行不出來。 19 這樣，我願意行的善，我沒有去行；我不願意做的惡，我反而去做。 20 那麼，如果我做我不願意做的事，這事就不再是我所做的，而是住在我裡面的罪所做的。 21 因此我發現一個法則：當我願意行善的時候，惡就在我裡面。 22 就是說，按著內在的人，我喜愛神的法則， 23 然而我發現在我身體[d]中另有一個法則，與我理性的法則交戰，把我擄到我身體中罪的法則裡。 24 我這個人真是可悲呀！誰能救我脫離這屬於死亡的身體呢？ 25 藉著我們的主耶穌基督，感謝歸於神！[e]由此可見，我自己一方面在理性上服從神的法則，另一方面在肉體中卻服從罪的法則。

脱离律法的约束归属基督
7 弟兄们，我对懂得律法的人说，你们不晓得律法管辖人，是在他活着的期间吗？ 2 一个已婚的妇人，在丈夫活着的时候，她是受律法约束归属丈夫；丈夫若死了，她就脱离丈夫在律法上的约束。 3 所以，当丈夫还活着的时候，如果她归属别的男人，就称为淫妇；丈夫若死了，她就脱离了律法的约束，如果她归属别的男人，也不是淫妇。 4 这样，我的弟兄们，你们借着基督的身体，对律法来说也已经死了，使你们归属另一位，就是那从死人中复活的，为的是要我们结果子给 神。 5 我们从前属肉体的时候，罪恶的情欲借着律法在我们的肢体里发动，就结出死亡的果子。 6 但现在，我们既然向那捆绑我们的律法死了，就脱离了律法的约束，好让我们用心灵的新样子，而不用仪文的旧方式来服事主。
善恶两律在心中交战
7 这样，我们可以说甚么呢？难道律法是罪吗？绝对不是。不过，如果不是借着律法，我就不知道甚么是罪；如果不是律法说“不可贪心”，我就不知道甚么是贪心。 8 但罪趁着机会，借着诫命在我里面发动各样的贪心，因为没有律法，罪是死的。 9 在没有律法的时候，我是活的；但诫命一来，罪就活了，我就死了。 10 那本来使人活的诫命，反而使我死了； 11 因为罪借着诫命把握着机会来欺骗我，并且杀了我。 12 这样，律法是圣洁的，诫命也是圣洁、公义和良善的。
13 既是这样，那良善的反而使我死吗？绝对不是！但罪借着那良善的使我死，就显出真是罪，为了要使罪借着诫命变成更加邪恶。 14 我们知道律法是属灵的，我却是属肉体的，已经卖给罪了。 15 因为我所作的，我不明白；我所愿意的，我没有去作，我所恨恶的，我倒去作。 16 如果我所不愿意的，我倒去作，我就不得不承认律法是好的。 17 既是这样，那就不是我作的，而是住在我里面的罪作的。 18 我知道在我里面，就是在我肉体之中，没有良善，因为立志行善由得我，行出来却由不得我。 19 所以我愿意行的善，我没有去行；我不愿意作的恶，我倒去作了。 20 我若作自己不愿意作的事，那就不是我作的，而是住在我里面的罪作的。 21 因此，我发现了一个律，就是我想向善的时候，恶就在我里面出现。 22 按着我里面的人来说，我是喜欢 神的律， 23 但我发觉肢体中另有一个律，和我心中的律争战，把我掳去附从肢体中的罪律。 24 我这个人真是苦啊！谁能救我脱离这使我死亡的身体呢？ 25 感谢 神，借着我们的主耶稣基督就能脱离了。可见，一方面我自己心里服事 神的律，另一方面我的肉体却服事罪的律。

婚姻關係的例子
7 弟兄姊妹，我現在對那些熟悉律法的人說：你們難道不知道律法只在人活著的時候管轄人嗎？ 2 比方說，一個婦人結了婚，只要丈夫還在世，她就受律法的約束要與丈夫在一起。如果丈夫死了，她就脫離了與丈夫的婚姻關係。 3 丈夫還活著的時候，她若與別的男人發生性關係，便算淫婦。丈夫若死了，她就脫離了與丈夫的婚姻關係，即使改嫁，也不是淫婦。
4 我的弟兄姊妹，同樣，你們藉著基督的身體向著律法也死了，使你們可以歸於那位從死裡復活的基督，好為上帝結果子。 5 從前我們受自己罪惡本性[a]的控制，因律法而激發的罪惡慾望在我們身上發作，以致結出死亡的果子。 6 但現在，我們既然向著一度捆綁我們的律法死了，就脫離了律法的控制，能夠以聖靈所賜的新樣式，而不是以拘守教條的舊樣式事奉上帝。
律法使人知罪
7 那麼，我們可以說律法本身是罪嗎？當然不是！沒有律法，我們就不知道什麼是罪。律法若不說「不可貪心」，我就不知道什麼是貪心。 8 然而，罪卻趁機利用誡命在我裡面生出各種貪念，因為沒有律法，罪是死的。 9 我沒認識律法之前是活的，但律法來了之後，罪就活了，而我卻死了。 10 我發現那本來要使人活的誡命反而叫我死， 11 因為罪利用誡命趁機引誘我，而且藉著誡命殺了我。
12 其實律法是聖潔的，誡命也是聖潔、公義、良善的。 13 既然如此，難道是良善的誡命叫我死嗎？當然不是！是罪藉著良善的誡命叫我死。這樣，罪藉著誡命叫我死就顯出它實在是邪惡至極！
善惡相爭
14 我們知道律法是屬靈的，我卻屬乎肉體，已經賣給罪做奴隸了。 15 我不明白自己的所作所為，因為我想做的，我做不到；而我憎恨的惡事，我偏偏去做！ 16 既然我不想做的，我反倒去做，我就得承認律法是好的。 17 其實那並不是我做的，而是住在我裡面的罪做的。 18 我也知道，在我的罪惡本性裡面毫無良善，我有行善的心願，卻沒有行善的力量。 19 我想行善，卻不能行；我不想作惡，反倒去作。 20 如果我不想做的，我反倒去做，這就不是我自己做的，而是住在我裡面的罪做的。
21 因此，我發現一個律：我想行善的時候，惡就不放過我。 22 按著我裡面的意思[b]，我喜愛上帝的律。 23 然而，我發覺在我身體內另有一個律和我心中的律作戰，將我俘虜，使我服從身體內犯罪的律。 24 我真是苦啊！誰能救我脫離這個被死亡控制的身體呢？ 25 感謝上帝，祂藉著我們的主耶穌基督救了我！這樣看來，我的內心服從上帝的律法，但我罪惡的本性卻服從犯罪的律。

Believers United to Christ
7 Or do you not know, (A)brethren (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? 2 For (B)the married woman is bound by law to her [a]husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law [b]concerning the husband. 3 So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man.
4 Therefore, my brethren, you also were (C)made to die (D)to the Law (E)through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were (F)in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were (G)aroused by the Law, were at work (H)in [c]the members of our body to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we have been (I)released from the Law, having (J)died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in (K)newness of (L)the [d]Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.
7 (M)What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? (N)May it never be! On the contrary, (O)I would not have come to know sin except [e]through the Law; for I would not have known about [f]coveting if the Law had not said, “(P)You shall not [g]covet.” 8 But sin, (Q)taking opportunity (R)through the commandment, produced in me [h]coveting of every kind; for (S)apart [i]from the Law sin is dead. 9 I was once alive apart [j]from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died; 10 and this commandment, which was [k](T)to result in life, proved [l]to result in death for me; 11 for sin, (U)taking an opportunity (V)through the commandment, (W)deceived me and through it killed me. 12 (X)So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? (Y)May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.
The Conflict of Two Natures
14 For we know that the Law is (Z)spiritual, but I am (AA)of flesh, (AB)sold [m](AC)into bondage to sin. 15 For what I am doing, (AD)I do not understand; for I am not practicing (AE)what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. 16 But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with (AF)the Law, confessing that the Law is good. 17 So now, (AG)no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my (AH)flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For (AI)the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, (AJ)I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.
21 I find then (AK)the [n]principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God [o]in (AL)the inner man, 23 but I see (AM)a different law in [p]the members of my body, waging war against the (AN)law of my mind and making me a prisoner [q]of (AO)the law of sin which is in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from [r](AP)the body of this (AQ)death? 25 (AR)Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh (AS)the law of sin.
