脫離律法的約束歸屬基督
7 弟兄們，我對懂得律法的人說，你們不曉得律法管轄人，是在他活著的期間嗎？ 2 一個已婚的婦人，在丈夫活著的時候，她是受律法約束歸屬丈夫；丈夫若死了，她就脫離丈夫在律法上的約束。 3 所以，當丈夫還活著的時候，如果她歸屬別的男人，就稱為淫婦；丈夫若死了，她就脫離了律法的約束，如果她歸屬別的男人，也不是淫婦。 4 這樣，我的弟兄們，你們藉著基督的身體，對律法來說也已經死了，使你們歸屬另一位，就是那從死人中復活的，為的是要我們結果子給 神。 5 我們從前屬肉體的時候，罪惡的情慾藉著律法在我們的肢體裡發動，就結出死亡的果子。 6 但現在，我們既然向那捆綁我們的律法死了，就脫離了律法的約束，好讓我們用心靈的新樣子，而不用儀文的舊方式來服事主。
善惡兩律在心中交戰
7 這樣，我們可以說甚麼呢？難道律法是罪嗎？絕對不是。不過，如果不是藉著律法，我就不知道甚麼是罪；如果不是律法說“不可貪心”，我就不知道甚麼是貪心。 8 但罪趁著機會，藉著誡命在我裡面發動各樣的貪心，因為沒有律法，罪是死的。 9 在沒有律法的時候，我是活的；但誡命一來，罪就活了，我就死了。 10 那本來使人活的誡命，反而使我死了； 11 因為罪藉著誡命把握著機會來欺騙我，並且殺了我。 12 這樣，律法是聖潔的，誡命也是聖潔、公義和良善的。
13 既是這樣，那良善的反而使我死嗎？絕對不是！但罪藉著那良善的使我死，就顯出真是罪，為了要使罪藉著誡命變成更加邪惡。 14 我們知道律法是屬靈的，我卻是屬肉體的，已經賣給罪了。 15 因為我所作的，我不明白；我所願意的，我沒有去作，我所恨惡的，我倒去作。 16 如果我所不願意的，我倒去作，我就不得不承認律法是好的。 17 既是這樣，那就不是我作的，而是住在我裡面的罪作的。 18 我知道在我裡面，就是在我肉體之中，沒有良善，因為立志行善由得我，行出來卻由不得我。 19 所以我願意行的善，我沒有去行；我不願意作的惡，我倒去作了。 20 我若作自己不願意作的事，那就不是我作的，而是住在我裡面的罪作的。 21 因此，我發現了一個律，就是我想向善的時候，惡就在我裡面出現。 22 按著我裡面的人來說，我是喜歡 神的律， 23 但我發覺肢體中另有一個律，和我心中的律爭戰，把我擄去附從肢體中的罪律。 24 我這個人真是苦啊！誰能救我脫離這使我死亡的身體呢？ 25 感謝 神，藉著我們的主耶穌基督就能脫離了。可見，一方面我自己心裡服事 神的律，另一方面我的肉體卻服事罪的律。

7 Eller veten I icke, mina bröder -- jag talar ju till sådana som känna lagen -- att lagen råder över en människa för så lång tid som hon lever?
2 Så är ju en gift kvinna genom lag bunden vid sin man, så länge denne lever; men om mannen dör, då är hon löst från den lag som band henne vid mannen.
3 Alltså, om hon giver sig åt en annan man, medan hennes man lever, så kallas hon äktenskapsbryterska; men om mannen dör, då är hon fri ifrån lagen, så att hon icke är äktenskapsbryterska, om hon giver sig åt en annan man.
4 Så haven ock I, mina bröder, genom Kristi kropp blivit dödade från lagen för att tillhöra en annan, nämligen honom som har uppstått från de döda, på det att vi må bära frukt åt Gud.
5 Ty medan vi ännu voro i ett köttsligt väsende, voro de syndiga lustar, som uppväcktes genom lagen, verksamma i våra lemmar till att bära frukt åt döden.
6 Men nu äro vi lösta från lagen, i det att vi hava dött från det varunder vi förr höllos fångna; och så tjäna vi nu i Andens nya väsende, och icke i bokstavens gamla väsende.
7 Vad skola vi då säga? Är lagen synd? Bort det! Men synden skulle jag icke hava lärt känna, om icke genom lagen; ty jag hade icke vetat av begärelsen, om icke lagen hade sagt: »Du skall icke hava begärelse.»
8 Men då nu synden fick tillfälle, uppväckte den genom budordet allt slags begärelse i mig. Ty utan lag är synden död.
9 Jag levde en gång utan lag; men när budordet kom, fick synden liv,
10 och jag hemföll åt döden. Så befanns det att budordet, som var givet till liv, det blev mig till död;
11 ty då synden fick tillfälle, förledde den mig genom budordet och dödade mig genom det.
12 Alltså är visserligen lagen helig, och budordet heligt och rättfärdigt och gott.
13 Har då verkligen det som är gott blivit mig till död? Bort det! Men synden har blivit det, för att så skulle varda uppenbart att den var synd, i det att den genom något som självt var gott drog över mig död; och så skulle synden bliva till övermått syndig, genom budordet.
14 Vi veta ju att lagen är andlig, men jag är av köttslig natur, såld till träl under synden.
15 Ty jag kan icke fatta att jag handlar såsom jag gör; jag gör ju icke vad jag vill, men vad jag hatar, det gör jag.
16 Om jag nu gör det som jag icke vill, så giver jag mitt bifall åt lagen och vidgår att den är god.
17 Så är det nu icke mer jag som gör sådant, utan synden, som bor i mig.
18 Ty jag vet att i mig, det är i mitt kött, bor icke något gott; viljan är väl tillstädes hos mig, men att göra det goda förmår jag icke.
19 Ja, det goda som jag vill gör jag icke; men det onda som jag icke vill, det gör jag.
20 Om jag alltså gör vad jag icke vill, så är det icke mer jag som gör det, utan synden, som bor i mig.
21 Så finner jag nu hos mig, som har viljan att göra det goda, den lagen, att det onda fastmer är tillstädes hos mig.
22 Ty efter min invärtes människa har jag min lust i Guds lag;
23 men i mina lemmar ser jag en annan lag, en som ligger i strid med den lag som är i min håg, en som gör mig till fånge under syndens lag, som är i mina lemmar.
24 Jag arma människa! Vem skall frälsa mig från denna dödens kropp? --
25 Gud vare tack, genom Jesus Kristus, vår Herre! Alltså tjänar jag, sådan jag är i mig själv, visserligen med min håg Guds lag, men med köttet tjänar jag syndens lag.

7 Don’t you realize, brothers and sisters, that laws have power over people only as long as they are alive? (I’m speaking to people who are familiar with Moses’ Teachings.) 2 For example, a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he is alive. But if her husband dies, that marriage law is no longer in effect for her. 3 So if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she will be called an adulterer. But if her husband dies, she is free from this law, so she is not committing adultery if she marries another man.
4 In the same way, brothers and sisters, you have died to the laws in Moses’ Teachings through Christ’s body. You belong to someone else, the one who was brought back to life.
As a result, we can do what God wants. 5 While we were living under the influence of our corrupt nature, sinful passions were at work throughout our bodies. Stirred up by the laws in Moses’ Teachings, our sinful passions did things that result in death. 6 But now we have died to those laws that bound us. God has broken their effect on us so that we are serving in a new spiritual way, not in an old way dictated by written words.
Moses’ Laws Show What Sin Is
7 What should we say, then? Are the laws in Moses’ Teachings sinful? That’s unthinkable! In fact, I wouldn’t have recognized sin if those laws hadn’t shown it to me. For example, I wouldn’t have known that some desires are sinful if Moses’ Teachings hadn’t said, “Never have wrong desires.” 8 But sin took the opportunity provided by this commandment and made me have all kinds of wrong desires. Clearly, without laws sin is dead. 9 At one time I was alive without any laws. But when this commandment came, sin became alive 10 and I died. I found that the commandment which was intended to bring me life actually brought me death. 11 Sin, taking the opportunity provided by this commandment, deceived me and then killed me.
12 So the laws in Moses’ Teachings are holy, and the commandment is holy, right, and good. 13 Now, did something good cause my death? That’s unthinkable! Rather, my death was caused by sin so that sin would be recognized for what it is. Through a commandment sin became more sinful than ever.
God’s Standards Are at War with Sin’s Standards
14 I know that God’s standards in Moses’ Teachings are spiritual, but I have a corrupt nature, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I don’t realize what I’m doing. I don’t do what I want to do. Instead, I do what I hate. 16 I don’t do what I want to do, but I agree that God’s standards are good. 17 So I am no longer the one who is doing the things I hate, but sin that lives in me is doing them.
18 I know that nothing good lives in me; that is, nothing good lives in my corrupt nature. Although I have the desire to do what is right, I don’t do it. 19 I don’t do the good I want to do. Instead, I do the evil that I don’t want to do. 20 Now, when I do what I don’t want to do, I am no longer the one who is doing it. Sin that lives in me is doing it.
21 So I’ve discovered this truth: Evil is present with me even when I want to do what God’s standards say is good. 22 I take pleasure in God’s standards in my inner being. 23 However, I see a different standard ⌞at work⌟ throughout my body. It is at war with the standards my mind sets and tries to take me captive to sin’s standards which still exist throughout my body. 24 What a miserable person I am! Who will rescue me from my dying body? 25 I thank God that our Lord Jesus Christ rescues me! So I am obedient to God’s standards with my mind, but I am obedient to sin’s standards with my corrupt nature.

Released From the Law, Bound to Christ
7 Do you not know, brothers and sisters(A)—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.(B) 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress.(C) But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
4 So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law(D) through the body of Christ,(E) that you might belong to another,(F) to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 For when we were in the realm of the flesh,[a](G) the sinful passions aroused by the law(H) were at work in us,(I) so that we bore fruit for death.(J) 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law(K) so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.(L)
The Law and Sin
7 What shall we say, then?(M) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!(N) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.(O) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”[b](P) 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(Q) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.(R) 9 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life(S) actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(T) deceived me,(U) and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.(V)
13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good(W) to bring about my death,(X) so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,(Y) sold(Z) as a slave to sin.(AA) 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.(AB) 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.(AC) 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.(AD) 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c](AE) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.(AF) 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.(AG)
21 So I find this law at work:(AH) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being(AI) I delight in God’s law;(AJ) 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war(AK) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin(AL) at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?(AM) 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!(AN)
So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,(AO) but in my sinful nature[d] a slave to the law of sin.(AP)
