Living Bible
9 As he was walking along, he saw a man blind from birth.
2 “Master,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it a result of his own sins or those of his parents?”
3 “Neither,” Jesus answered. “But to demonstrate the power of God. 4 All of us must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent me, for there is little time left before the night falls and all work comes to an end. 5 But while I am still here in the world, I give it my light.”
6 Then he spat on the ground and made mud from the spittle and smoothed the mud over the blind man’s eyes, 7 and told him, “Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam” (the word Siloam means “Sent”). So the man went where he was sent and washed and came back seeing!
8 His neighbors and others who knew him as a blind beggar asked each other, “Is this the same fellow—that beggar?”
9 Some said yes, and some said no. “It can’t be the same man,” they thought, “but he surely looks like him!”
And the beggar said, “I am the same man!”
10 Then they asked him how in the world he could see. What had happened?
11 And he told them, “A man they call Jesus made mud and smoothed it over my eyes and told me to go to the Pool of Siloam and wash off the mud. I did, and I can see!”
12 “Where is he now?” they asked.
“I don’t know,” he replied.
13 Then they took the man to the Pharisees. 14 Now as it happened, this all occurred on a Sabbath.[a] 15 Then the Pharisees asked him all about it. So he told them how Jesus had smoothed the mud over his eyes, and when it was washed away, he could see!
16 Some of them said, “Then this fellow Jesus is not from God because he is working on the Sabbath.”
Others said, “But how could an ordinary sinner do such miracles?” So there was a deep division of opinion among them.
17 Then the Pharisees turned on the man who had been blind and demanded, “This man who opened your eyes—who do you say he is?”
“I think he must be a prophet sent from God,” the man replied.
18 The Jewish leaders wouldn’t believe he had been blind, until they called in his parents 19 and asked them, “Is this your son? Was he born blind? If so, how can he see?”
20 His parents replied, “We know this is our son and that he was born blind, 21 but we don’t know what happened to make him see, or who did it. He is old enough to speak for himself. Ask him.”
22-23 They said this in fear of the Jewish leaders who had announced that anyone saying Jesus was the Messiah would be excommunicated.
24 So for the second time they called in the man who had been blind and told him, “Give the glory to God, not to Jesus, for we know Jesus is an evil person.”
25 “I don’t know whether he is good or bad,” the man replied, “but I know this: I was blind, and now I see!”
26 “But what did he do?” they asked. “How did he heal you?”
27 “Look!” the man exclaimed. “I told you once; didn’t you listen? Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Then they cursed him and said, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know God has spoken to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t know anything about him.”
30 “Why, that’s very strange!” the man replied. “He can heal blind men, and yet you don’t know anything about him! 31 Well, God doesn’t listen to evil men, but he has open ears to those who worship him and do his will. 32 Since the world began there has never been anyone who could open the eyes of someone born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he couldn’t do it.”
34 “You illegitimate bastard,[b] you!” they shouted. “Are you trying to teach us?” And they threw him out.
35 When Jesus heard what had happened, he found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Messiah?”[c]
36 The man answered, “Who is he, sir, for I want to.”
37 “You have seen him,” Jesus said, “and he is speaking to you!”
38 “Yes, Lord,” the man said, “I believe!” And he worshiped Jesus.
39 Then Jesus told him, “I have come into the world to give sight to those who are spiritually blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind.”
40 The Pharisees who were standing there asked, “Are you saying we are blind?”
41 “If you were blind, you wouldn’t be guilty,” Jesus replied. “But your guilt remains because you claim to know what you are doing.

A Man Born Blind Receives Sight
9 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, (A)who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, (B)but that the works of God should be revealed in him. 4 (C)I[a] must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is (D)day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, (E)I am the light of the world.”
6 When He had said these things, (F)He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. 7 And He said to him, “Go, wash (G)in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So (H)he went and washed, and came back seeing.
8 Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was [b]blind said, “Is not this he who sat and begged?”
9 Some said, “This is he.” Others said, [c]“He is like him.”
He said, “I am he.”
10 Therefore they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”
11 He answered and said, (I)“A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to [d]the pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received sight.”
12 Then they said to him, “Where is He?”
He said, “I do not know.”
The Pharisees Excommunicate the Healed Man
13 They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
16 Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not [e]keep the Sabbath.”
Others said, (J)“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And (K)there was a division among them.
17 They said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?”
He said, (L)“He is a prophet.”
18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight. 19 And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”
20 His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but by what means he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said these things because (M)they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he (N)would be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24 So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, (O)“Give God the glory! (P)We know that this Man is a sinner.”
25 He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”
26 Then they said to him again, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”
27 He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”
28 Then they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. 29 We know that God (Q)spoke to (R)Moses; as for this fellow, (S)we do not know where He is from.”
30 The man answered and said to them, (T)“Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! 31 Now we know that (U)God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him. 32 Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. 33 (V)If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”
34 They answered and said to him, (W)“You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?” And they [f]cast him out.
True Vision and True Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had (X)found him, He said to him, “Do you (Y)believe in (Z)the Son of [g]God?”
36 He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?”
37 And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him and (AA)it is He who is talking with you.”
38 Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” And he (AB)worshiped Him.
39 And Jesus said, (AC)“For judgment I have come into this world, (AD)that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.”
40 Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, (AE)and said to Him, “Are we blind also?”
41 Jesus said to them, (AF)“If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.

Vindecarea unui orb din naştere
9 Când trecea, Isus a văzut un orb din naştere. 2 Ucenicii Lui L-au întrebat: „Învăţătorule, cine(A) a păcătuit: omul acesta sau părinţii lui, de s-a născut orb?” 3 Isus a răspuns: „N-a păcătuit nici omul acesta, nici părinţii lui, ci(B) s-a născut aşa, ca să se arate în el lucrările lui Dumnezeu. 4 Cât este ziuă, trebuie(C) să lucrez lucrările Celui ce M-a trimis; vine noaptea, când nimeni nu mai poate să lucreze. 5 Cât sunt în lume, sunt(D) Lumina lumii.” 6 După ce a zis aceste vorbe, a(E) scuipat pe pământ şi a făcut tină din scuipat. Apoi a uns ochii orbului cu tina aceasta 7 şi i-a zis: „Du-te de te spală în(F) scăldătoarea Siloamului” (care, tălmăcit, înseamnă: Trimis). El(G) s-a dus, s-a spălat şi s-a întors văzând bine. 8 Vecinii şi cei ce-l cunoscuseră mai înainte ca cerşetor ziceau: „Nu este acesta cel ce şedea şi cerşea?” 9 Unii ziceau: „El este”. Alţii ziceau: „Nu, dar seamănă cu el”. Şi el însuşi zicea: „Eu sunt”. 10 Deci i-au zis: „Cum ţi s-au deschis ochii?” 11 El a răspuns: „Omul(H) acela, căruia I se zice Isus, a făcut tină, mi-a uns ochii şi mi-a zis: ‘Du-te la scăldătoarea Siloamului şi spală-te.’ M-am dus, m-am spălat şi mi-am căpătat vederea.” 12 „Unde este Omul acela?” l-au întrebat ei. El a răspuns: „Nu ştiu”.
Cercetarea orbului de farisei
13 Au adus la farisei pe cel ce fusese orb mai înainte. 14 Şi era o zi de Sabat când făcuse Isus tină şi-i deschisese ochii. 15 Din nou, fariseii l-au întrebat şi ei cum şi-a căpătat vederea. Şi el le-a zis: „Mi-a pus tină pe ochi, m-am spălat şi văd”. 16 Atunci, unii din farisei au început să zică: „Omul acesta nu vine de la Dumnezeu, pentru că nu ţine Sabatul”. Alţii ziceau: „Cum(I) poate un om păcătos să facă asemenea semne?” Şi(J) era dezbinare între ei. 17 Iarăşi au întrebat pe orb: „Tu ce zici despre El în privinţa faptului că ţi-a deschis ochii?” „Este(K) un proroc”, le-a răspuns el. 18 Iudeii n-au crezut că fusese orb şi că îşi căpătase vederea până n-au chemat pe părinţii lui. 19 Şi când i-au venit părinţii, i-au întrebat: „Acesta este fiul vostru, care spuneţi că s-a născut orb? Cum dar vede acum?” 20 Drept răspuns, părinţii lui au zis: „Ştim că acesta este fiul nostru şi că s-a născut orb. 21 Dar cum vede acum sau cine i-a deschis ochii, nu ştim. Întrebaţi-l pe el; este în vârstă, el singur poate vorbi despre ce-l priveşte.” 22 Părinţii lui au zis aceste lucruri, pentru că se(L) temeau de iudei, căci iudeii hotărâseră acum ca, dacă va mărturisi cineva că Isus este Hristosul, să(M) fie dat afară din sinagogă. 23 De aceea au zis părinţii lui: „Este în vârstă, întrebaţi-l pe el”. 24 Fariseii au chemat a doua oară pe omul care fusese orb şi i-au zis: „Dă(N) slavă lui Dumnezeu: noi(O) ştim că omul acesta este un păcătos”. 25 El a răspuns: „Dacă este un păcătos, nu ştiu; eu una ştiu: că eram orb, şi acum văd”. 26 Iarăşi l-au întrebat: „Ce ţi-a făcut? Cum ţi-a deschis ochii?” 27 „Acum v-am spus”, le-a răspuns el, „şi n-aţi ascultat. Pentru ce voiţi să mai auziţi încă o dată? Doar n-aţi vrea să vă faceţi şi voi ucenicii Lui!” 28 Ei l-au ocărât şi i-au zis: „Tu eşti ucenicul Lui, noi suntem ucenicii lui Moise. 29 Ştim că Dumnezeu a vorbit lui Moise, dar acesta nu(P) ştim de unde este.” 30 „Aici(Q) este mirarea”, le-a răspuns omul acela, „că voi nu ştiţi de unde este, şi totuşi El mi-a deschis ochii. 31 Ştim că Dumnezeu(R) n-ascultă pe păcătoşi, ci, dacă este cineva temător de Dumnezeu şi face voia Lui, pe acela îl ascultă. 32 De când este lumea, nu s-a auzit să fi deschis cineva ochii unui orb din naştere. 33 Dacă(S) omul acesta n-ar veni de la Dumnezeu, n-ar putea face nimic.” 34 „Tu eşti născut cu totul în(T) păcat”, i-au răspuns ei, „şi vrei să ne înveţi pe noi?” Şi l-au dat afară.
Isus întâlneşte pe orb în Templu
35 Isus a auzit că l-au dat afară şi, când l-a găsit, i-a zis: „Crezi tu în Fiul(U) lui Dumnezeu?” 36 El a răspuns: „Şi cine este, Doamne, ca să cred în El?” 37 „L-ai şi văzut”, i-a zis Isus, „şi cel(V) care vorbeşte cu tine, Acela este”. 38 „Cred, Doamne”, I-a zis el; şi I s-a închinat. 39 Apoi, Isus a zis: „Eu am venit în lumea aceasta pentru(W) judecată: ca(X) cei ce nu văd să vadă şi cei ce văd să ajungă orbi”. 40 Unii din fariseii care erau lângă el, când au auzit aceste vorbe, I-au(Y) zis: „Doar n-om fi şi noi orbi!” 41 „Dacă(Z) aţi fi orbi”, le-a răspuns Isus, „n-aţi avea păcat, dar acum ziceţi: ‘Vedem’. Tocmai de aceea păcatul vostru rămâne.”

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.(E) 4 As long as it is day,(F) we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”(G)
6 After saying this, he spit(H) on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam”(I) (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.(J)
8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”(K) 9 Some claimed that he was.
Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”
But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”(L)
12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.
“I don’t know,” he said.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.(M) 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.(N) “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”(O)
But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”(P) So they were divided.(Q)
17 Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied, “He is a prophet.”(R)
18 They(S) still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19 “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders,(T) who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out(U) of the synagogue.(V) 23 That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”(W)
24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,”(X) they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”(Y)
25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 He answered, “I have told you already(Z) and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!(AA) 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”(AB)
30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.(AC) 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God,(AD) he could do nothing.”
34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth;(AE) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.(AF)
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe(AG) in the Son of Man?”(AH)
36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”(AI)
37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”(AJ)
38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.(AK)
39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment(AL) I have come into this world,(AM) so that the blind will see(AN) and those who see will become blind.”(AO)
40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”(AP)
41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.(AQ)
