9 耶穌過去的時候，看見一個人生來是瞎眼的。 2 門徒問耶穌說：「拉比，這人生來是瞎眼的，是誰犯了罪？是這人呢，是他父母呢？」 3 耶穌回答說：「也不是這人犯了罪，也不是他父母犯了罪，是要在他身上顯出神的作為來。 4 趁著白日，我們必須做那差我來者的工；黑夜將到，就沒有人能做工了。 5 我在世上的時候，是世上的光。」 6 耶穌說了這話，就吐唾沫在地上，用唾沫和泥抹在瞎子的眼睛上， 7 對他說：「你往西羅亞池子裡去洗。」（「西羅亞」翻出來就是「奉差遣」。）他去一洗，回頭就看見了。 8 他的鄰舍和那素常見他是討飯的，就說：「這不是那從前坐著討飯的人嗎？」 9 有人說：「是他。」又有人說：「不是，卻是像他。」他自己說：「是我。」 10 他們對他說：「你的眼睛是怎樣開的呢？」 11 他回答說：「有一個人名叫耶穌，他和泥抹我的眼睛，對我說：『你往西羅亞池子去洗。』我去一洗，就看見了。」 12 他們說：「那個人在哪裡？」他說：「我不知道。」

13 他們把從前瞎眼的人帶到法利賽人那裡。 14 耶穌和泥開他眼睛的日子是安息日。 15 法利賽人也問他是怎麼得看見的。瞎子對他們說：「他把泥抹在我的眼睛上，我去一洗，就看見了。」 16 法利賽人中有的說：「這個人不是從神來的，因為他不守安息日。」又有人說：「一個罪人怎能行這樣的神蹟呢？」他們就起了紛爭。 17 他們又對瞎子說：「他既然開了你的眼睛，你說他是怎樣的人呢？」他說：「是個先知。」 18 猶太人不信他從前是瞎眼、後來能看見的，等到叫了他的父母來， 19 問他們說：「這是你們的兒子嗎？你們說他生來是瞎眼的，如今怎麼能看見了呢？」 20 他父母回答說：「他是我們的兒子，生來就瞎眼，這是我們知道的。 21 至於他如今怎麼能看見，我們卻不知道。是誰開了他的眼睛，我們也不知道。他已經成了人，你們問他吧，他自己必能說。」 22 他父母說這話是怕猶太人，因為猶太人已經商議定了，若有認耶穌是基督的，要把他趕出會堂。 23 因此他父母說「他已經成了人，你們問他吧」。 24 所以法利賽人第二次叫了那從前瞎眼的人來，對他說：「你該將榮耀歸給神，我們知道這人是個罪人。」 25 他說：「他是個罪人不是，我不知道。有一件事我知道：從前我是眼瞎的，如今能看了！」 26 他們就問他說：「他向你做什麼？是怎麼開了你的眼睛呢？」 27 他回答說：「我方才告訴你們，你們不聽，為什麼又要聽呢？莫非你們也要做他的門徒嗎？」 28 他們就罵他，說：「你是他的門徒！我們是摩西的門徒。 29 神對摩西說話是我們知道的，只是這個人，我們不知道他從哪裡來！」 30 那人回答說：「他開了我的眼睛，你們竟不知道他從哪裡來，這真是奇怪！ 31 我們知道神不聽罪人，唯有敬奉神、遵行他旨意的，神才聽他。 32 從創世以來，未曾聽見有人把生來是瞎子的眼睛開了。 33 這人若不是從神來的，什麼也不能做。」 34 他們回答說：「你全然生在罪孽中，還要教訓我們嗎？」於是把他趕出去了。

35 耶穌聽說他們把他趕出去，後來遇見他，就說：「你信神的兒子嗎？」 36 他回答說：「主啊，誰是神的兒子，叫我信他呢？」 37 耶穌說：「你已經看見他，現在和你說話的就是他。」 38 他說：「主啊，我信！」就拜耶穌。 39 耶穌說：「我為審判到這世上來，叫不能看見的可以看見，能看見的反瞎了眼。」 40 同他在那裡的法利賽人聽見這話，就說：「難道我們也瞎了眼嗎？」 41 耶穌對他們說：「你們若瞎了眼，就沒有罪了；但如今你們說『我們能看見』，所以你們的罪還在。

Healing the Man Born Blind
9 While He was passing by, He noticed a man [who had been] blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi (Teacher), who [a]sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it was so that the works of God might be displayed and illustrated in him. 4 We must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the world [giving guidance through My word and works].” 6 When He had said this, He spat on the ground and made mud with His saliva, and He spread the mud [like an ointment] on the man’s eyes. 7 And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of [b]Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing. 8 So the neighbors, and those who used to know him as a beggar, said, “Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some said, “It is he.” Still others said, “No, but he looks like him.” But he kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 So they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?” 11 He replied, “The Man called Jesus made mud and smeared it on my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received my sight!” 12 They asked him, “Where is He?” He said, “I do not know.”
Controversy over the Man
13 Then they brought the man who was formerly blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now it was on a Sabbath day that Jesus made the mud and opened the man’s eyes. 15 So the Pharisees asked him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He smeared mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I see.” 16 Then some of the Pharisees said, “This Man [Jesus] is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner (a non-observant Jew) do such signs and miracles?” So there was a difference of opinion among them. 17 Accordingly they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “[It must be that] He is a [c]prophet!”
18 However, the Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the man’s parents. 19 They asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but as to how he now sees, we do not know; or who has opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him [and stop asking us]; [d]he is of age, he will speak for himself and give his own account of it.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of [the leaders of] the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone acknowledged Jesus to be the Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue (excommunicated). 23 Because of this his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24 So a second time they called the man who had been [born] blind, and said to him, “Give God glory and praise [for your sight]! We know this Man [Jesus] is a sinner [separated from God].” 25 Then he answered, “I do not know whether He is a sinner [separated from God]; but one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 So they said to him, “What did He [actually] do to you? How did He open your eyes?” 27 He answered, “I already told you and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again and again? Do you want to become His disciples, too?” 28 And [at that remark] they stormed at him and jeered, “You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses! 29 We know [for certain] that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this Man, we do not know where He is from.” 30 The man replied, “Well, this is astonishing! You do not know where He comes from, and yet He opened my eyes! 31 We know [according to your tradition] that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone fears God and does His will, He hears him. 32 Since the [e]beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 If this Man were not from God, He would not be able to do anything [like this because God would not hear His prayer].” 34 They answered him, “You were [f]born entirely in sins [from head to foot], and you [presume to] teach us?” Then they threw him out [of the synagogue].
Jesus Affirms His Deity
35 Jesus heard that they had [g]put him out [of the synagogue], and finding him, He asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 He answered, “Who is He, Sir? Tell me so that I may believe in Him.” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and [in fact] He is the one who is talking with you.” 38 And he said, “Lord, I believe [in You and Your word]!” And he worshiped Him [with reverence and awe]. 39 Then Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment [to separate those who believe in Me from those who reject Me—to declare judgment on those who choose to be separated from God], so that the sightless would see, and those who see would become blind.” 40 Some Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, “Are we also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind [to spiritual things], you would have no sin [and would not be blamed for your unbelief]; but since you claim to have [spiritual] sight, [you have no excuse so] your sin and guilt remain.(A)

- John 9:7 The ancient town of Siloam is now an Arab village named Silwan. It is east of Jerusalem and south of the Old City. The pool of Siloam was fed by the Gihon Spring in the Kidron Valley through a channel (Hezekiah’s tunnel) that carried water into Jerusalem.

9 Dọc đường đi, Đức Giê-su thấy một người mù từ thuở sinh ra. 2 Các môn đệ hỏi Ngài: “Thưa Thầy, vì tội của ai? Của anh này hay của cha mẹ mà anh ta phải chịu sinh ra mù lòa?”
3 Đức Giê-su trả lời: “Chẳng phải vì anh ta hay cha mẹ phạm tội đâu, nhưng để việc làm của Đức Chúa Trời được thể hiện trong người ấy. 4 Khi còn ban ngày, chúng ta phải làm những công tác của Đấng đã sai Ta đến, kẻo khi đêm xuống, không ai làm việc được nữa! 5 Đang khi còn ở thế gian, Ta là sự sáng của thế gian.”
6 Nói xong, Ngài nhổ nước bọt xuống đất hòa thành bùn, rồi xức bùn ấy vào mắt người mù 7 và bảo: “Hãy đến rửa ở ao Si-lô-am”, Si-lô-am có nghĩa là “được sai đi”. Vậy người ấy đi ra ao, rửa, rồi trở lại thì được thấy rõ.
8 Hàng xóm láng giềng và những người vẫn thường thấy anh ta ăn xin trước kia hỏi nhau: “Có phải anh này là người hay ngồi ăn xin không?” 9 Một số thì bảo đúng là anh ta, số khác lại nói: “Không phải, một người nào đó giống hắn!” Anh ta lên tiếng: “Chính tôi đây mà!”
10 Họ liền hỏi anh: “Vậy thì làm sao mắt ngươi được sáng?”
11 Anh ta trả lời: “Một người tên là Giê-su hòa bùn xức lên mắt tôi và bảo tôi đi đến ao Si-lô-am rửa cho sạch. Tôi đi rửa thì thấy được.”
12 Họ hỏi tiếp: “Người ấy ở đâu?” Anh ta trả lời: “Tôi không biết!”
13 Họ dẫn người vốn bị mù đến với các người Pha-ri-si. 14 Hôm Đức Giê-su hòa bùn chữa cho người này sáng mắt là ngày Sa-bát. 15 Người Pha-ri-si lại chất vấn: “Sao ngươi thấy được?” Anh ta trả lời: “Ông ấy bôi bùn lên mắt tôi, tôi đi rửa thì thấy được!”
16 Một vài người trong nhóm Pha-ri-si liền nói: “Người này không thể nào đến từ Đức Chúa Trời vì đã không kiêng giữ ngày Sa-bát.” Nhưng một số người khác lại lý luận: “Làm sao một người có tội có thể làm dấu lạ như vậy được?” Thế là họ chia phe chống nhau.
17 Vậy nên những người Pha-ri-si vặn hỏi người mù một lần nữa: “Theo ngươi thì người đã chữa lành mắt ngươi là ai?” Anh ta đáp: “Ấy là một vị tiên tri.”
18 Nhưng các người Do Thái không chịu tin rằng anh ta vốn mù mà nay lại thấy được, cho đến khi họ đòi cha mẹ người vừa được sáng mắt đến. 19 Họ tra hỏi: “Đây có phải là con của ông bà đã bị mù từ khi sinh ra không? Làm sao bây giờ nó thấy được?”
20 Cha mẹ anh ta thưa: “Chúng tôi nhận đây chính là con chúng tôi mù từ lúc mới sinh, 21 nhưng làm sao nó thấy được thì chúng tôi không biết, hay ai mở mắt nó, chúng tôi cũng không hay. Các ông cứ hỏi nó, nó lớn rồi, việc nó để nó khai!” 22 Cha mẹ anh ta nói như vậy, vì sợ người Do Thái; bởi người Do Thái đã quyết định khai trừ khỏi hội đường người nào xưng Đức Giê-su là Chúa Cứu Thế. 23 Cho nên cha mẹ anh ta mới nói: “Nó lớn rồi, cứ hỏi nó.”
24 Họ lại đòi người vốn bị mù ra một lần nữa và bảo: “Có Trời chứng giám,[a] chúng ta biết người ấy là một tội nhân!”
25 Anh ta thưa lại: “Người ấy có là tội nhân hay không, tôi không biết. Tôi chỉ biết một điều, trước tôi mù mà nay thấy được!”
26 Họ hỏi tiếp: “Người ấy đã làm gì cho ngươi? Làm thế nào mắt ngươi sáng được?”
27 Anh ta thưa: “Tôi đã nói rồi mà các ông không chịu nghe. Sao các ông còn muốn nghe nữa? Chẳng lẽ chính các ông cũng muốn thành môn đệ của người sao?”
28 Họ mắng anh ta: “Mầy mới là môn đệ của hắn, còn chúng ta là môn đệ của Môi-se! 29 Chúng ta biết Đức Chúa Trời đã phán với Môi-se, còn tên này chúng ta không biết gốc gác từ đâu.”
30 Anh ta nói: “Chuyện lạ thật! Người đã làm cho mắt tôi sáng mà các ông lại không biết gốc gác từ đâu. 31 Chúng ta đều biết Đức Chúa Trời chẳng nghe người có tội mà chỉ đoái nghe những người kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời và làm theo ý Ngài. 32 Xưa nay, đời nào có chuyện một người mở mắt cho kẻ mù bẩm sinh. 33 Nếu người này không phải đến từ Đức Chúa Trời thì làm sao làm nổi chuyện này?”
34 Họ đáp: “Mầy sinh ra tội lỗi đầy mình mà còn đòi dạy khôn chúng ta sao?” Rồi họ đuổi anh đi.
35 Đức Giê-su nghe họ đuổi anh ấy đi, nên tìm anh hỏi: “Ngươi có tin Con Người không?”
36 Anh ta đáp: “Thưa Ngài, Con Người là ai để tôi tin?”
37 Đức Giê-su bảo: “Ngươi đã thấy Con Người tận mắt và Người đang nói với ngươi đây chính là Đấng ấy!”
38 Người ấy nói: “Lạy Chúa, tôi tin!” rồi sấp mình lạy Ngài.
39 Đức Giê-su phán: “Vì sự phán xét Ta đã đến thế gian này: Người không thấy thì được thấy, còn kẽ thấy thì hóa mù!”
40 Mấy người Pha-ri-si có mặt ở đó nghe vậy liền hỏi: “Ông bảo chúng tôi mù cả sao?”
41 Đức Giê-su đáp: “Nếu các ông mù thì chẳng có tội gì, nhưng vì các ông cho mình là sáng nên tội các ông vẫn còn!”

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi,(A) who sinned,(B) this man(C) or his parents,(D) that he was born blind?”
3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.(E) 4 As long as it is day,(F) we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”(G)
6 After saying this, he spit(H) on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam”(I) (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.(J)
8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”(K) 9 Some claimed that he was.
Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”
But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”(L)
12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.
“I don’t know,” he said.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.(M) 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.(N) “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”(O)
But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”(P) So they were divided.(Q)
17 Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied, “He is a prophet.”(R)
18 They(S) still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19 “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders,(T) who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out(U) of the synagogue.(V) 23 That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”(W)
24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,”(X) they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”(Y)
25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 He answered, “I have told you already(Z) and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!(AA) 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”(AB)
30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.(AC) 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God,(AD) he could do nothing.”
34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth;(AE) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.(AF)
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe(AG) in the Son of Man?”(AH)
36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”(AI)
37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”(AJ)
38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.(AK)
39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment(AL) I have come into this world,(AM) so that the blind will see(AN) and those who see will become blind.”(AO)
40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”(AP)
41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.(AQ)

9 När Jesus kom gående fick han se en man som var blind från födelsen. 2 Hans lärjungar frågade: "Rabbi, vem har syndat, han själv eller hans föräldrar, eftersom han föddes blind?" 3 Jesus svarade: "Det är varken han eller hans föräldrar som har syndat, utan detta har skett för att Guds gärningar skulle uppenbaras på honom. 4 Så länge det är dag måste vi göra hans gärningar som har sänt mig. Natten kommer, då ingen kan arbeta. 5 När jag är i världen, är jag världens ljus." 6 När han hade sagt detta, spottade han på marken, gjorde en deg av saliven och strök den på den blindes ögon 7 och sade till honom: "Gå och tvätta dig i dammen Siloam." - Ordet Siloam betyder "utsänd". - Då gick han dit och tvättade sig, och när han kom tillbaka kunde han se.
8 Hans grannar och de som förut hade sett honom tigga sade: "Är det inte han som satt och tiggde?" 9 Några sade: "Det är han", och andra: "Nej, men han är lik honom." Själv sade han: "Det är jag." 10 De frågade: "Hur öppnades dina ögon?" 11 Han svarade: "Den man som heter Jesus gjorde en deg och smorde mina ögon och sade till mig: Gå till Siloam och tvätta dig där. Jag gick dit, och när jag tvättat mig kunde jag se." 12 De frågade: "Var är den mannen?" Han svarade: "Det vet jag inte."
13 De förde då mannen som hade varit blind till fariseerna. 14 Men det var sabbat den dag Jesus hade gjort degen och öppnat hans ögon. 15 Därför frågade även fariseerna honom, hur han hade fått sin syn. Han svarade: "Han lade en deg på mina ögon, och jag tvättade mig, och nu ser jag." 16 Några fariseer sade: "Den mannen kan inte vara från Gud, då han inte håller sabbaten." Andra sade: "Hur kan en syndig människa göra sådana tecken?" De var alltså oeniga 17 och frågade därför den blinde igen: "Vad säger du om honom som öppnade dina ögon?" Han svarade: "En profet är han."
18 Men judarna trodde inte att han hade varit blind och fått sin syn, förrän de hade skickat efter hans föräldrar 19 och frågat dem: "Är det här er son, som ni säger är född blind? Hur kommer det sig att han nu kan se?" 20 Hans föräldrar svarade: "Vi vet att han är vår son och att han föddes blind. 21 Men hur han nu kan se, det vet vi inte, och inte heller vet vi vem som har öppnat hans ögon. Fråga honom själv. Han är gammal nog och kan svara för sig." 22 Föräldrarna svarade så, därför att de var rädda för judarna. Redan då hade judarna kommit överens om att den som bekände Jesus som Messias skulle uteslutas ur synagogan. 23 Därför gav hans föräldrar detta svar: "Han är gammal nog att svara för sig. Fråga honom själv."
24 De kallade för andra gången till sig mannen som hade varit blind och sade till honom: "Ge Gud äran! Vi vet att den mannen är en syndare." 25 Han svarade: "Om han är en syndare vet jag inte. Men ett vet jag, att jag som var blind nu ser." 26 De frågade honom: "Vad gjorde han med dig? Hur öppnade han dina ögon?" 27 Han svarade: "Jag har redan sagt er det, men ni har inte hört på. Varför vill ni höra det en gång till? Kanske ni också vill bli hans lärjungar?" 28 De hånade honom och sade: "Det är du som är hans lärjunge, vi är Moses lärjungar. 29 Vi vet att Gud har talat till Mose, men varifrån den här mannen kommer, det vet vi inte." 30 Han svarade: "Ja, det är det som är så märkligt. Ni vet inte varifrån han är, och han har öppnat mina ögon! 31 Vi vet att Gud inte lyssnar till syndare, men om någon är gudfruktig och gör hans vilja, då lyssnar han till honom. 32 Aldrig någonsin har man hört att någon har öppnat ögonen på en som var född blind. 33 Om den mannen inte vore från Gud, kunde han ingenting göra." 34 De svarade: "Du är helt och hållet född i synd, och du undervisar oss!" Och de drev bort honom.
35 Jesus fick höra att de hade drivit bort honom, och när han fann honom sade han: "Tror du på Människosonen?" 36 Han svarade: "Vem är han, herre? Tala om det så att jag kan tro på honom." 37 Jesus sade: "Du har sett honom. Den som talar med dig, han är det." 38 Då sade mannen: "Jag tror, Herre." Och han tillbad honom. 39 Jesus sade: "Till en dom har jag kommit i världen, för att de som inte ser skall se och för att de som ser skall bli blinda." 40 Några fariseer som var med honom hörde detta och sade: "Inte är väl också vi blinda?" 41 Jesus sade: "Om ni vore blinda skulle ni inte ha någon synd. Men nu säger ni att ni ser. Därför står er synd kvar.
