8 但是，耶稣到橄榄山去了。 2 一大清早，他又去了大殿。所有的人都聚拢在他的身边，他便坐下开始教导人们。 3 律法师和法利赛人带来一个被捉住的通奸女子，让她站在人们面前， 4 然后对耶稣说∶“老师，这女子正在通奸的时候，让我们给抓住了， 5 摩西在律法中命令，我们应该用石头砸死这种人，你看现在怎么办吧？” 6 他们这是在试探耶稣，好找借口来控告他。耶稣俯下身，开始用手指在地上写字。 7 他们还是不停地问他，他直起身来对他们说∶“你们当中谁没有罪，谁就可以第一个用石头砸她。” 8 然后，他又俯下身在地上写字。
9 听了这话，从年长的人开始，一个个地都走开了，最后只剩下耶稣独自一人和站在他面前的女子。 10 耶稣直起身来对她说∶“妇人，他们在哪里？没人给你定罪吗？”
11 她说∶“先生，没有。”
耶稣说∶“我也不给你定罪。你走吧，以后不要再犯罪了。”
耶稣是世界之光
12 耶稣又对他们说∶“我是世界之光，跟随我的人绝不会走在黑暗之中，他将获得生命之光。”
13 法利赛人对他说∶“你在为自己作见证，你的证言根本无效。”
14 耶稣回答他们说∶“即便我为自己作证，我的证言仍然有效，因为我知道我从哪里来，到哪里去。而你们却不知道我从哪里来，到哪里去。 15 你们用凡人的标准评判，而我却不评判任何人。 16 一旦我要评判，我的判决就有效，因为我并非独自一人，派我来的父将和我一起审判。 17 你们的律法上写着：两人作证即为有效。 18 我为我自己作证，派我来的父也为我作证。”
19 然后，他们问他∶“你父在哪里呢？”
耶稣回答说∶“你们既不认识我，也不认识我父。假如你们认识我，你们也会认识我父。” 20 耶稣是在奉献箱边上教导时，说这番话的。但是，没有人来逮捕他，他的时刻还没有到呢。
一些犹太人不理解耶稣
21 耶稣接着又对他们说∶“我就要走了，你们将会寻找我，但你们将在罪恶中死去，我去的地方你们不能去。”
22 犹太人发问∶“‘我要去的地方，你们不能去。’他这么说，是不是要自杀？”
23 耶稣对他们说∶“你们从下面来，我从上面来，你们来自这个世界，我不是来自于这个世界， 24 所以我告诉你们，你们将要在你们的罪恶中死去。如果你们不相信我是 [a]（基督），你们将在罪恶中死去。”
然后，他们问∶ 25 “你是谁？”
耶稣告诉他们∶“我从一开始就告诉了你们我是谁。 26 关于你们，我有许多事要说，要评判。派我来的那位是真实的，我所说的都是从他那里听来的。”
27 人们并不知道耶稣正在谈他父， 28 耶稣对他们说∶“当你们举起（杀害）人子的时候，就知道我是基督了。我不凭自己做任何事情，而是按父教导我的去讲， 29 派我来的那位与我同在，他不会撇下我，因为我做的事令他喜悦。” 30 耶稣说这话时，许多人都信仰他了。
耶稣谈摆脱罪恶
31 耶稣对信仰了他的犹太人说∶“你们如果遵守我的教导，就真正是我的门徒了。 32 你们会认识真理，而真理将使你们获得自由。”
33 他们说∶“我们是亚伯拉罕的子孙，从未做过任何人的奴隶，你怎么说∶‘你们将获得自由’呢？’”
34 耶稣回答他们说∶“我实话告诉你们，凡是继续犯罪的人，都是罪恶的奴隶， 35 奴隶不会和家人呆在一起，但是儿子却永远属于这个家庭。 36 所以，如果人子让你们获得自由，你们才会真正自由。我知道你们是亚伯拉罕的后代， 37 但是，你们却企图杀害我，因为你们不接受我的教导。 38 我所说的都是我从父那里看见的，你们所做的是你们从自己的父亲那里所听到的。”
39 人们回答说∶“亚伯拉罕是我们的父亲！”
耶稣对他们说∶“如果你们真是亚伯拉罕的子孙，就该做他做的事情。 40 可是你们现在却想杀害我，即一个把从上帝那里听到的真理告诉给你们的人。亚伯拉罕不曾做过这种事， 41 你们做的，正是你们父亲做过的事。”
于是，他们对耶稣说∶“我们不是私生子，我们只有一个父亲，就是上帝！”
42 耶稣对他们说∶“如果上帝是你们的父亲，你们就该爱我，因为我来自于上帝，而且现在我已经在这里了。我不是自己来的，是他派我来的。 43 我的话你们为什么不明白呢？因为你们不接受我的教导。 44 你们从你们的父亲－魔鬼那里来，想遵从你们父亲的欲望。你们的父亲从开始就是谋杀者，从来没有站在真理一边，因为，他心里根本就没有真理。他说谎是出于他的本性，因为他是个说谎的人，是谎言之父， 45 但是，因为我讲真理，你们却不相信我， 46 你们当中有谁能指控我有罪呢？既然我在讲真相，为什么你们还不相信呢？ 47 属于上帝的人，听上帝的话。这是你们不听的原因：因为你们不是属于上帝的人。”
耶稣谈亚伯拉罕与自己
48 犹太人回答道∶“我们说你是撒玛利亚人，并被鬼附体了，难道不对吗？”
49 耶稣回答说∶“我没被鬼附体，我尊重我父，可是，你们却不尊重我。 50 我没有为自己追求荣耀，但是却有一位为我求荣耀，评断是非。 51 我实话告诉你们，谁要是遵循我的教导，他就永远不会死。”
52 听到这里，犹太人对他说∶“现在，我们知道你被鬼附体了，亚伯拉罕和先知们都死了，你却说∶‘任何遵从我的教导的人，都不会尝到死亡的滋味。’ 53 你比我们的祖先亚伯拉罕更伟大吗？亚伯拉罕死了，先知也死了，你以为你是什么人？”
54 耶稣回答∶“我若荣耀我自己，那么，这荣耀就毫无价值，荣耀我的，是我父， 55 虽然你们声称他是你们的上帝，但是，你们从来就不认识他，我认识他。如果我说我不认识他，那我就和你们一样是个撒谎的人了，但是，我的确认识他，并遵从他的教导。 56 你们的祖先亚伯拉罕看到我来临的日子，会非常高兴的，他看到了，十分高兴。”
57 然后，犹太人对他说∶“你还不到五十岁，就见过亚伯拉罕？”
58 耶稣对他说∶“我实话告诉你们，亚伯拉罕出现以前，我就存在了。”说到这里，他们捡起石头砸他， 59 但是，他躲开了，离开了大殿院。

耶穌不定犯姦淫婦人的罪
8 耶穌往橄欖山去。 2 黎明的時候，他又到聖殿去，眾人都來到他那裡，他就坐下教導他們。 3 經學家和法利賽人帶了一個行淫時被抓到的婦人來，叫她站在中間， 4 就對耶穌說：“先生，這婦人是正在犯姦淫的時候被抓到的。 5 摩西在律法上吩咐我們把這樣的婦人用石頭打死，你怎樣說呢？” 6 他們說這話是要試探耶穌，要找把柄來控告他。耶穌卻彎下身，用指頭在地上寫字。 7 他們不住地問耶穌，他就挺起身來，說：“你們中間誰是沒有罪的，他就可以先拿起石頭打她。” 8 於是又彎下身在地上寫字。 9 他們聽了這話，就從年老的開始，一個一個地都離開了，留下的只有耶穌和那個還站在那裡的婦人。 10 耶穌挺起身來，問她：“婦人，他們在哪裡？沒有人定你的罪嗎？” 11 她說：“主啊！沒有。”耶穌說：“我也不定你的罪。走吧，從現在起不要再犯罪了。”
耶穌是世界的光
12 耶穌又對眾人說：“我是世界的光，跟從我的，必定不在黑暗裡走，卻要得著生命的光。” 13 法利賽人對他說：“你為自己作證，你的見證不是真實的。” 14 耶穌回答：“即使我為自己作證，我的見證還是真實的，因為我知道我從哪裡來，往哪裡去，但你們卻不知道我從哪裡來，往哪裡去。 15 你們按著外貌判斷人，我卻不判斷人。 16 即使我判斷人，我的判斷也是正確的，因為我不是獨自一人，而是差我來的父和我在一起。 17 你們的律法上也寫著：‘兩個人的見證才是真的。’ 18 我為自己作證，差我來的父也為我作證。” 19 他們問：“你的父在哪裡？”耶穌回答：“你們不認識我，也不認識我的父；如果你們認識我，也就認識我的父了。” 20 這些話是耶穌在殿裡教導人的時候，在銀庫的院中說的。當時沒有人逮捕他，因為他的時候還沒有到。
不信基督的必在罪中死亡
21 耶穌又對他們說：“我要去了，你們要尋找我，並且要在自己的罪中死亡；我去的地方，你們不能到。” 22 於是猶太人說：“他說‘我去的地方，你們不能到’，難道他要自殺嗎？” 23 耶穌說：“你們是從地上來的，我是從天上來的；你們屬這世界，我卻不屬這世界， 24 所以我對你們說，你們要在自己的罪中死亡；你們若不信我就是‘那一位’，就要在自己的罪中死亡。” 25 他們就問：“你是誰？”耶穌說：“我不是從起初就告訴你們嗎？ 26 關於你們，我有許多事要說，要判斷；但那差我來的是真實的，我從他那裡聽見的，就告訴世人。” 27 他們不明白耶穌是對他們講論父的事。 28 所以耶穌說：“你們舉起了人子以後，必定知道我就是‘那一位’，並且知道我不憑著自己作甚麼事；我說的這些話，是照著父所教導我的。 29 那差我來的和我同在，他沒有留下我獨自一人，因為我常作他喜悅的事。” 30 耶穌說這些話的時候，就有許多人信了他。
真理必使人自由
31 於是耶穌對信了他的猶太人說：“你們若持守我的道，就真是我的門徒了； 32 你們必定認識真理，真理必定使你們自由。” 33 他們說：“我們是亞伯拉罕的後裔，從來沒有被誰奴役過，你怎麼說‘你們必得自由’呢？” 34 耶穌說：“我實實在在告訴你們，凡犯罪的都是罪的奴隸。 35 奴隸不能永遠住在家裡，唯有兒子才可以永遠住在家裡。 36 所以， 神的兒子若使你們自由，你們就真的得自由了。 37 我知道你們是亞伯拉罕的後裔；但你們想殺我，因為你們心裡不能容納我的道。 38 我所說的，是我在父那裡看見的；但你們所作的，卻是從你們的父那裡聽見的。”
魔鬼的兒女不肯聽主的道
39 他們說：“我們的祖宗是亞伯拉罕。”耶穌說：“你們若是亞伯拉罕的子孫，就必作亞伯拉罕所作的。 40 現在我把從 神那裡聽見的真理告訴了你們，你們竟然想殺我，這不是亞伯拉罕所作的。 41 你們要作的，正是你們的父要作的。”他們說：“我們不是從淫亂生的；我們只有一位父，就是 神。” 42 耶穌說：“如果 神是你們的父，你們就必愛我，因為我是從 神那裡來的；我已經來到這裡。我不是憑著自己來的，而是 神差了我來。 43 你們為甚麼不明白我的話呢？因為我的道你們聽不進去。 44 你們是出於你們的父魔鬼，喜歡按著你們的父的私慾行事。他從起初就是殺人的兇手，不守真理，因為他心裡沒有真理。他說謊是出於本性，因為他本來就是說謊者，也是說謊的人的父。 45 我講真理，你們卻因此不信我。 46 你們中間有誰能指證我有罪呢？我既然講真理，你們為甚麼不信我呢？ 47 出於 神的，就聽 神的話；你們不聽，因為你們不是出於 神的。”
亞伯拉罕以前耶穌已存在
48 猶太人對耶穌說：“我們說你是撒瑪利亞人，並且是鬼附的，不是很對嗎？” 49 耶穌回答：“我不是鬼附的。我尊敬我的父，你們卻侮辱我。 50 我不求自己的榮耀，但有一位是為我求榮耀，並且是審判人的。 51 我實實在在告訴你們，人若遵守我的道，必定永遠不見死亡。” 52 猶太人對他說：“現在我們知道你的確是鬼附的。亞伯拉罕死了，先知們也死了，你還說‘人若遵守我的道，必定永遠不嘗死味’， 53 難道你比我們的祖宗亞伯拉罕還大嗎？他死了，先知們也死了；你把自己當作甚麼人呢？” 54 耶穌回答：“如果我榮耀自己，我的榮耀就算不得甚麼；那使我得榮耀的是我的父，就是你們說是你們的 神的那一位。 55 可是你們不認識他，我卻認識他。如果我說我不認識他，我就像你們一樣是說謊的；然而我認識他，也遵守他的道。 56 你們的祖宗亞伯拉罕，因為可以看見我的日子就歡喜，既然看見了，他就很快樂。” 57 猶太人對他說：“你還不到五十歲，怎會見過亞伯拉罕呢？” 58 耶穌說：“我實實在在告訴你們，亞伯拉罕出生以前，我已經存在了。” 59 於是他們拿起石頭要打他。耶穌卻躲起來，從殿裡出去了。

8 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.(A)
2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.(B) 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(C) Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap,(D) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(E)
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(F) at her.”(G) 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,”(H) Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”(I)
Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am(J) the light of the world.(K) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(L)
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”(M)
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(N) But you have no idea where I come from(O) or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards;(P) I pass judgment on no one.(Q) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(R) 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(S) 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”(T)
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,”(U) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(V) 20 He spoke these words while teaching(W) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(X) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(Y)
Dispute Over Who Jesus Is
21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(Z) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(AA)
22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(AB) 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(AC) you will indeed die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(AD) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”(AE)
27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man,(AF) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(AG) 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(AH) for I always do what pleases him.”(AI) 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(AJ)
Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,(AK) you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(AL)
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants(AM) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(AN) 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(AO) 36 So if the Son sets you free,(AP) you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(AQ) because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(AR) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[b]”(AS)
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,”(AT) said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(AU) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(AV) Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”(AW)
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(AX)
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(AY) for I have come here from God.(AZ) I have not come on my own;(BA) God sent me.(BB) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(BC) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(BD) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(BE) 45 Yet because I tell the truth,(BF) you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.(BG) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Jesus’ Claims About Himself
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan(BH) and demon-possessed?”(BI)
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself;(BJ) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(BK)
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!(BL) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?(BM) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,(BN) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(BO) 55 Though you do not know him,(BP) I know him.(BQ) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(BR) 56 Your father Abraham(BS) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(BT) and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,(BU) I am!”(BV) 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(BW) but Jesus hid himself,(BX) slipping away from the temple grounds.
