8 耶稣却往橄榄山去。
淫妇被赦免
2 清晨，耶稣又来到圣殿，全体民众到他那里，他就坐下，开始教导他们。
3 这时，经文士们和法利赛人带来一个在通奸时被抓住的妇人，叫她站在中间。 4 他们对耶稣说：“老师，这妇人是正在通奸的时候被抓住的。 5 摩西在律法上吩咐我们用石头砸死这样的女人，既然如此，你怎么说呢？” 6 他们说这话是要试探耶稣，为要找把柄[a]来控告他。
耶稣却弯下腰，开始用指头在地上写字。 7 可是当他们不停地追问耶稣的时候，耶稣就直起身来，对他们说：“你们当中谁没有罪，谁就先用石头砸她吧！”
8 然后他又弯下腰去，继续在地上写字。 9 他们听了这话，[b]从年长的开始[c]，一个接一个地走开了。最后，只剩下耶稣和那站在中间的妇人。 10 耶稣直起身来[d]问她：“妇人，他们[e]在哪里？没有人定你的罪吗？”
11 她说：“主啊，没有。”
耶稣说：“我也不定你的罪。你回去吧！从今以后不要再犯罪了。”[f]
世界的光
12 耶稣又对众人说：“我就是世界的光。跟从我的人，绝不会在黑暗里行走，却要得到生命的光。”
13 法利赛人对他说：“你为自己做见证，你的见证是无效[g]的。”
14 耶稣回答：“即使我为自己做见证，我的见证也是有效[h]的，因为我知道我从哪里来，往哪里去；而你们却不知道我从哪里来，往哪里去。 15 你们是按人[i]的标准来评断，我却不评断任何人。 16 不过，就算我评断，我的评断也是真实的，因为我不是独自一人，而是有那派我来的父与我同在。 17 连你们的律法上也记载着：两个人的见证才是有效的。 18 我为自己做见证，派我来的父也为我做见证。”
19 他们就问耶稣：“你的‘父’在哪里？”
耶稣回答：“你们既不认识我，也不认识我的父；如果你们认识我，也就认识我的父。” 20 这些话是耶稣在圣殿的奉献箱附近教导人的时候说的。可是没有人抓他，因为他的时候还没有到。
耶稣预言离世
21 后来，耶稣又对他们说：“我要去了，你们将要寻找我，并且将死在自己的罪中。我去的地方，你们不能去。”
22 那些犹太人就说：“他说‘我去的地方，你们不能去’，难道他要自杀吗？”
23 耶稣对他们说：“你们从下面来，我从上面来；你们属于这世界，我不属于这世界。 24 所以我对你们说过‘你们将死在自己的罪孽中。’事实上，你们如果不信我就是那一位，就将死在自己的罪孽中。”
25 他们问：“你到底是谁？”
耶稣说：“我从一开始就告诉你们了。 26 关于你们，我有很多事要说、要评断；不过派我来的那一位是真实的，我从他那里听了这些事，就向世人说出来。”
27 他们不明白耶稣对他们说的是有关父的事。 28 所以耶稣说：“你们举起人子的时候，你们那时就会明白我就是那一位，也会明白我不凭自己做什么，而且我说这些话，也是照着父所教导我的。 29 派我来的那一位与我同在；他[j]没有撇下我，使我独自一人，因为我一直做他所喜悦的事。”
真理与自由
30 耶稣说这些话的时候，许多人就信了他。 31 于是耶稣对信他的犹太人说：“你们如果住在我的话语中，就真是我的门徒了， 32 并且你们将明白真理，而真理将使你们自由。”
33 他们回答：“我们是亚伯拉罕的后裔，从来没有做过谁的奴仆。你怎么说‘你们将要得自由’呢？”
34 耶稣回答：“我确确实实地告诉你们：所有犯罪的，就是罪的奴隶。 35 奴隶不会永远住在家里，儿子却会永远住在家里。 36 所以，如果子使你们自由，你们就真正自由了。 37 我知道你们是亚伯拉罕的后裔。可是你们想要杀我，因为你们里面容不下我的话语。 38 我所说的，是我从我[k]父那里所看到的；而实际上，你们所做的，是从你们的[l]父那里所听到[m]的。”
39 他们回答说：“亚伯拉罕是我们的父！”
耶稣说：“如果你们是亚伯拉罕的儿女，就会做亚伯拉罕所做的事。 40 但如今，我把从神那里所听到的真理告诉了你们，你们就想杀我。亚伯拉罕没有做过这种事。 41 你们在做你们的父所做的事。”
他们回答说：“我们不是由淫乱所生的，我们只有一位父，就是神。”
42 耶稣说：“如果神是你们的父，你们就会爱我，因为我是出于神，并且从神那里来。要知道，我并不是凭自己而来的，而是那一位差派了我。 43 你们为什么不明白我的话呢？这是因为你们听不进我的话语。 44 你们属于你们的父——魔鬼，并且想要随你们父的欲望去做。他从起初就是杀人的，不站在真理之中，因为他里面没有真理。他说虚假之事是出于自己的本性，因为他本来就是个说谎者，并且是说谎者之父。 45 可是因为我讲真理，你们就不相信我！ 46 你们当中谁能指证我有罪呢？既然我讲的是真理，你们为什么不相信我呢？ 47 属神的人，就听神的话语；你们之所以不听，是因为你们不属于神。”
耶稣与亚伯拉罕
48 那些犹太人回答说：“我们说你是个撒马利亚人，并且有鬼魔附身，难道说得不对吗？”
49 耶稣回答：“我没有鬼魔附身。我尊重我的父，你们却侮辱我。 50 我不寻求自己的荣耀，但有寻求和判断的那一位。 51 我确确实实地告诉你们：人如果遵守我的话语，就绝不见死亡，直到永远。”
52 犹太人说：“现在我们知道你是有鬼魔附身的。亚伯拉罕死了，先知们也死了，你还说‘人如果遵守我的话语，就绝不会尝到死的滋味，直到永远。’ 53 难道你比我们的先祖亚伯拉罕更大吗？他死了，先知们也死了。你把自己当做什么人？”
54 耶稣回答：“如果我荣耀自己，我的荣耀就算不得什么。荣耀我的是我的父，就是你们说‘他是我们的神’的那一位。 55 你们不认识他，我却认识他。如果我说我不认识他，我就成了像你们那样的说谎者。但我认识他，也遵守他的话语。 56 你们的先祖亚伯拉罕因为将要看到我的日子就快乐。他看到了，就欢喜。”
57 犹太人就对他说：“你还不到五十岁，怎么会见过亚伯拉罕？[n]”
58 耶稣对他们说：“我确确实实地告诉你们：亚伯拉罕存在之前，我就存在了。”
59 他们因此拿起石头要砸他。耶稣却被隐藏，[o]离开了圣殿。

8 1 y Jesús se fue al monte de los Olivos. 2 Y por la mañana volvió al templo, y todo el pueblo vino a él; y sentado él, les enseñaba. 3 Entonces los escribas y los fariseos le trajeron una mujer sorprendida en adulterio; y poniéndola en medio, 4 le dijeron: Maestro, esta mujer ha sido sorprendida en el acto mismo de adulterio. 5 Y en la ley nos mandó Moisés apedrear a tales mujeres.(A) Tú, pues, ¿qué dices? 6 Mas esto decían tentándole, para poder acusarle. Pero Jesús, inclinado hacia el suelo, escribía en tierra con el dedo. 7 Y como insistieran en preguntarle, se enderezó y les dijo: El que de vosotros esté sin pecado sea el primero en arrojar la piedra contra ella. 8 E inclinándose de nuevo hacia el suelo, siguió escribiendo en tierra. 9 Pero ellos, al oír esto, acusados por su conciencia, salían uno a uno, comenzando desde los más viejos hasta los postreros; y quedó solo Jesús, y la mujer que estaba en medio. 10 Enderezándose Jesús, y no viendo a nadie sino a la mujer, le dijo: Mujer, ¿dónde están los que te acusaban? ¿Ninguno te condenó? 11 Ella dijo: Ninguno, Señor. Entonces Jesús le dijo: Ni yo te condeno; vete, y no peques más.
Jesús, la luz del mundo
12 Otra vez Jesús les habló, diciendo: Yo soy la luz del mundo;(B) el que me sigue, no andará en tinieblas, sino que tendrá la luz de la vida. 13 Entonces los fariseos le dijeron: Tú das testimonio acerca de ti mismo; tu testimonio no es verdadero.(C) 14 Respondió Jesús y les dijo: Aunque yo doy testimonio acerca de mí mismo, mi testimonio es verdadero, porque sé de dónde he venido y a dónde voy; pero vosotros no sabéis de dónde vengo, ni a dónde voy. 15 Vosotros juzgáis según la carne; yo no juzgo a nadie. 16 Y si yo juzgo, mi juicio es verdadero; porque no soy yo solo, sino yo y el que me envió, el Padre. 17 Y en vuestra ley está escrito que el testimonio de dos hombres es verdadero. 18 Yo soy el que doy testimonio de mí mismo, y el Padre que me envió da testimonio de mí. 19 Ellos le dijeron: ¿Dónde está tu Padre? Respondió Jesús: Ni a mí me conocéis, ni a mi Padre; si a mí me conocieseis, también a mi Padre conoceríais. 20 Estas palabras habló Jesús en el lugar de las ofrendas, enseñando en el templo; y nadie le prendió, porque aún no había llegado su hora.
A donde yo voy, vosotros no podéis venir
21 Otra vez les dijo Jesús: Yo me voy, y me buscaréis, pero en vuestro pecado moriréis; a donde yo voy, vosotros no podéis venir. 22 Decían entonces los judíos: ¿Acaso se matará a sí mismo, que dice: A donde yo voy, vosotros no podéis venir? 23 Y les dijo: Vosotros sois de abajo, yo soy de arriba; vosotros sois de este mundo, yo no soy de este mundo. 24 Por eso os dije que moriréis en vuestros pecados; porque si no creéis que yo soy, en vuestros pecados moriréis. 25 Entonces le dijeron: ¿Tú quién eres? Entonces Jesús les dijo: Lo que desde el principio os he dicho. 26 Muchas cosas tengo que decir y juzgar de vosotros; pero el que me envió es verdadero; y yo, lo que he oído de él, esto hablo al mundo. 27 Pero no entendieron que les hablaba del Padre. 28 Les dijo, pues, Jesús: Cuando hayáis levantado al Hijo del Hombre, entonces conoceréis que yo soy, y que nada hago por mí mismo, sino que según me enseñó el Padre, así hablo. 29 Porque el que me envió, conmigo está; no me ha dejado solo el Padre, porque yo hago siempre lo que le agrada. 30 Hablando él estas cosas, muchos creyeron en él.
La verdad os hará libres
31 Dijo entonces Jesús a los judíos que habían creído en él: Si vosotros permaneciereis en mi palabra, seréis verdaderamente mis discípulos; 32 y conoceréis la verdad, y la verdad os hará libres. 33 Le respondieron: Linaje de Abraham somos,(D) y jamás hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo dices tú: Seréis libres?
34 Jesús les respondió: De cierto, de cierto os digo, que todo aquel que hace pecado, esclavo es del pecado. 35 Y el esclavo no queda en la casa para siempre; el hijo sí queda para siempre. 36 Así que, si el Hijo os libertare, seréis verdaderamente libres. 37 Sé que sois descendientes de Abraham; pero procuráis matarme, porque mi palabra no halla cabida en vosotros. 38 Yo hablo lo que he visto cerca del Padre; y vosotros hacéis lo que habéis oído cerca de vuestro padre.
Sois de vuestro padre el diablo
39 Respondieron y le dijeron: Nuestro padre es Abraham. Jesús les dijo: Si fueseis hijos de Abraham, las obras de Abraham haríais. 40 Pero ahora procuráis matarme a mí, hombre que os he hablado la verdad, la cual he oído de Dios; no hizo esto Abraham. 41 Vosotros hacéis las obras de vuestro padre. Entonces le dijeron: Nosotros no somos nacidos de fornicación; un padre tenemos, que es Dios. 42 Jesús entonces les dijo: Si vuestro padre fuese Dios, ciertamente me amaríais; porque yo de Dios he salido, y he venido; pues no he venido de mí mismo, sino que él me envió. 43 ¿Por qué no entendéis mi lenguaje? Porque no podéis escuchar mi palabra. 44 Vosotros sois de vuestro padre el diablo, y los deseos de vuestro padre queréis hacer. Él ha sido homicida desde el principio, y no ha permanecido en la verdad, porque no hay verdad en él. Cuando habla mentira, de suyo habla; porque es mentiroso, y padre de mentira. 45 Y a mí, porque digo la verdad, no me creéis. 46 ¿Quién de vosotros me redarguye de pecado? Pues si digo la verdad, ¿por qué vosotros no me creéis? 47 El que es de Dios, las palabras de Dios oye; por esto no las oís vosotros, porque no sois de Dios.
La preexistencia de Cristo
48 Respondieron entonces los judíos, y le dijeron: ¿No decimos bien nosotros, que tú eres samaritano, y que tienes demonio? 49 Respondió Jesús: Yo no tengo demonio, antes honro a mi Padre; y vosotros me deshonráis. 50 Pero yo no busco mi gloria; hay quien la busca, y juzga. 51 De cierto, de cierto os digo, que el que guarda mi palabra, nunca verá muerte. 52 Entonces los judíos le dijeron: Ahora conocemos que tienes demonio. Abraham murió, y los profetas; y tú dices: El que guarda mi palabra, nunca sufrirá muerte. 53 ¿Eres tú acaso mayor que nuestro padre Abraham, el cual murió? ¡Y los profetas murieron! ¿Quién te haces a ti mismo? 54 Respondió Jesús: Si yo me glorifico a mí mismo, mi gloria nada es; mi Padre es el que me glorifica, el que vosotros decís que es vuestro Dios. 55 Pero vosotros no le conocéis; mas yo le conozco, y si dijere que no le conozco, sería mentiroso como vosotros; pero le conozco, y guardo su palabra. 56 Abraham vuestro padre se gozó de que había de ver mi día; y lo vio, y se gozó. 57 Entonces le dijeron los judíos: Aún no tienes cincuenta años, ¿y has visto a Abraham? 58 Jesús les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo: Antes que Abraham fuese, yo soy. 59 Tomaron entonces piedras para arrojárselas; pero Jesús se escondió y salió del templo; y atravesando por en medio de ellos, se fue.

¡No vuelvas a pecar!
2 Al día siguiente, al amanecer, Jesús regresó al templo. La gente se acercó, y él se sentó[a] para enseñarles. 3 Entonces los maestros de la Ley y los fariseos llevaron al templo a una mujer. La habían sorprendido teniendo relaciones sexuales con un hombre que no era su esposo. Pusieron a la mujer en medio de toda la gente, 4 y le dijeron a Jesús:
—Maestro, encontramos a esta mujer cometiendo pecado de adulterio. 5 En nuestra ley, Moisés manda que a esta clase de mujeres las matemos a pedradas. ¿Tú qué opinas?
6 Ellos le hicieron esa pregunta para ponerle una trampa. Si él respondía mal, podrían acusarlo. Pero Jesús se inclinó y empezó a escribir en el suelo con su dedo. 7 Sin embargo, como no dejaban de hacerle preguntas, Jesús se levantó y les dijo:
—Si alguno de ustedes nunca ha pecado, tire la primera piedra.
8 Luego, volvió a inclinarse y siguió escribiendo en el suelo. 9 Al escuchar a Jesús, todos empezaron a irse, comenzando por los más viejos, hasta que Jesús se quedó solo con la mujer. 10 Entonces Jesús se puso de pie y le dijo:
—Mujer, los que te trajeron se han ido. ¡Nadie te ha condenado!
11 Ella le respondió:
—Así es, Señor. Nadie me ha condenado.
Jesús le dijo:
—Tampoco yo te condeno. Puedes irte, pero no vuelvas a pecar.
Jesús es la luz
12 Jesús volvió a hablarle a la gente:
—Yo soy la luz que alumbra a todos los que viven en este mundo. Síganme y no caminarán en la oscuridad, pues tendrán la luz que les da vida.
13 Los fariseos le dijeron:
—Tú te estás alabando a ti mismo. ¿Cómo sabremos que dices la verdad?
14 Jesús les respondió:
—Aunque hable bien de mí, lo que digo es cierto. Porque yo sé de dónde vine, y a dónde voy; sin embargo, ustedes no lo saben. 15 Ustedes juzgan como todos los demás, pero yo no juzgo a nadie. 16 Si lo hiciera, juzgaría de acuerdo a la verdad, porque no juzgo yo solo. Mi Padre, quien me envió, juzga conmigo. 17 La ley de ustedes dice que, para probar que algo es verdad, son necesarios dos testigos. 18 Pues bien, yo hablo bien de mí mismo; y mi Padre, quien me envió, también habla bien de mí.
19 Entonces le preguntaron:
—¿Dónde está tu padre?
Jesús les respondió:
—Si me conocieran, conocerían a mi Padre. Pero como no me conocen, tampoco a él lo conocen.
20 Jesús dijo todo esto mientras enseñaba en el templo, en el lugar donde se ponen las ofrendas. Pero nadie se lo llevó preso, porque aún no había llegado el momento de que todos supieran quién era él realmente.
Los jefes judíos y Jesús
21 Jesús habló de nuevo:
—Yo me voy, y ustedes me buscarán, pero morirán sin que Dios les haya perdonado sus pecados. A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir.
22 Los jefes judíos dijeron:
—¿Estará pensando en matarse, y por eso dice que no podemos ir a donde él va?
23 Jesús les aclaró:
—Ustedes son pecadores, como todos los que viven en este mundo. Pero yo no soy de este mundo, porque vengo del cielo. 24 Por eso les dije que, si no creen en mí ni en quién soy yo,[b] morirán sin que Dios les haya perdonado sus pecados.
25 Le preguntaron:
—¿Y quién eres tú?
Jesús les contestó:
—¿Por qué tengo que responderles? 26 Más bien, yo tengo mucho que decir de todo lo malo que ustedes hacen. El que me envió dice la verdad, y yo sólo digo lo que le escuché decir.
27 Pero ellos no entendieron que Jesús les estaba hablando de Dios, su Padre. 28 Por eso les dijo:
—Ustedes sabrán quién es en realidad el Hijo del hombre cuando me cuelguen de una cruz. También sabrán que no hago nada por mi propia cuenta, sino que sólo digo lo que mi Padre me ha enseñado. 29 Mi Padre nunca me ha abandonado, pues yo siempre hago lo que a él le agrada.
30 Cuando Jesús dijo esto, mucha gente creyó en él.
La verdad los hará libres
31 Jesús les dijo a los judíos que habían creído en él:
—Si ustedes obedecen mis enseñanzas, serán verdaderamente mis discípulos; 32 y conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres.
33 Ellos le contestaron:
—Nosotros somos descendientes de Abraham, y nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Por qué dices que seremos libres?
34-36 Jesús les respondió:
—Ningún esclavo se queda para siempre con la familia para la cual trabaja. El que se queda para siempre es el hijo de la familia; si él así lo quiere, puede dejar en libertad al esclavo. Les aseguro que cualquiera que peca es esclavo del pecado. Por eso, si yo, el Hijo de Dios, les perdono sus pecados, serán libres de verdad.
37 »Yo sé que ustedes son descendientes de Abraham, pero quieren matarme porque no aceptan mis enseñanzas. 38 Yo sólo les digo lo que mi Padre me ha enseñado. Ustedes, en cambio, hacen lo que les ha enseñado su padre.
39 Ellos le dijeron:
—¡Nuestro padre es Abraham!
Entonces Jesús les contestó:
—Si en verdad ustedes fueran descendientes de Abraham, harían lo que él hizo. 40 Pero yo les he dicho la verdad que he escuchado de Dios, y ustedes quieren matarme. ¡Abraham nunca hizo algo así! 41 Pero ustedes hacen exactamente lo mismo que hace su padre.
Ellos le contestaron:
—¡No nos acuses de tener otro padre! Nuestro único Padre es Dios.
42 Jesús les respondió:
—Si en verdad Dios fuera su Padre, ustedes me amarían, porque yo vengo del cielo, donde está Dios. Yo no vine por mi propia cuenta, sino que Dios me envió. 43 Ustedes no pueden entender lo que les digo, porque no les gusta escuchar mi mensaje. 44 El padre de ustedes es el diablo, y ustedes tratan de hacer lo que él quiere. El diablo siempre ha sido un asesino y un gran mentiroso. Todo lo que dice son sólo mentiras, y hace que las personas mientan.
45 »Por eso ustedes no pueden creer que digo la verdad. 46 ¿Quién de ustedes puede acusarme de haber hecho algo malo? Y si digo la verdad, ¿por qué no me creen? 47 Los hijos de Dios escuchan con atención todo lo que Dios dice. Pero ustedes no le ponen atención porque no son sus hijos.
Jesús y Abraham
48 Entonces, algunos judíos le dijeron:
—Cuando decimos que eres un extranjero indeseable,[c] y que tienes un demonio, no estamos equivocados.
49 Jesús les contestó:
—Yo no tengo ningún demonio. Lo que hago es hablar bien de mi Padre; pero ustedes hablan mal de mí. 50 Yo no le pido a la gente que hable bien de mí; es Dios quien lo quiere así, y es él quien juzga. 51 Les aseguro que quien obedezca mi enseñanza, vivirá para siempre con Dios.
52 Ellos le dijeron:
—Ahora sí estamos seguros de que tienes un demonio. Nuestro antepasado Abraham murió, y también murieron los profetas. Sin embargo, tú dices que el que te obedezca vivirá para siempre. 53 ¿Acaso te crees más importante que Abraham? Él y los profetas murieron. ¿Qué te estás creyendo?
54 Jesús les respondió:
—¿De qué me serviría hablar bien de mí mismo? Mi Padre es el que habla bien de mí, y ustedes dicen que él es su Dios. 55 En realidad, ustedes no lo conocen. Yo sí lo conozco. Lo conozco, y lo obedezco. Si dijera lo contrario, sería un mentiroso como ustedes. 56 Abraham, el antepasado de ustedes, se alegró mucho de que vería el tiempo en que yo vendría al mundo; lo vio, y le causó mucha alegría.
57 Entonces le preguntaron:
—Ni siquiera has cumplido cincuenta años de edad. ¿Cómo puedes decir que has visto a Abraham?
58 Jesús les dijo:
—Les aseguro que mucho antes de que naciera Abraham ya existía yo.
59 Entonces aquellos judíos quisieron matar a Jesús a pedradas; pero él se mezcló entre la multitud y salió del templo.

2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.(B) 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(C) Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap,(D) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(E)
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(F) at her.”(G) 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,”(H) Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”(I)
Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am(J) the light of the world.(K) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(L)
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”(M)
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(N) But you have no idea where I come from(O) or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards;(P) I pass judgment on no one.(Q) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(R) 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(S) 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”(T)
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,”(U) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(V) 20 He spoke these words while teaching(W) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(X) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(Y)
Dispute Over Who Jesus Is
21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(Z) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(AA)
22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(AB) 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(AC) you will indeed die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(AD) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”(AE)
27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man,(AF) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(AG) 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(AH) for I always do what pleases him.”(AI) 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(AJ)
Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,(AK) you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(AL)
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants(AM) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(AN) 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(AO) 36 So if the Son sets you free,(AP) you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(AQ) because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(AR) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[b]”(AS)
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,”(AT) said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(AU) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(AV) Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”(AW)
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(AX)
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(AY) for I have come here from God.(AZ) I have not come on my own;(BA) God sent me.(BB) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(BC) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(BD) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(BE) 45 Yet because I tell the truth,(BF) you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.(BG) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Jesus’ Claims About Himself
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan(BH) and demon-possessed?”(BI)
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself;(BJ) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(BK)
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!(BL) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?(BM) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,(BN) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(BO) 55 Though you do not know him,(BP) I know him.(BQ) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(BR) 56 Your father Abraham(BS) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(BT) and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,(BU) I am!”(BV) 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(BW) but Jesus hid himself,(BX) slipping away from the temple grounds.

4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.

16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.
20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
21 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
22 Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.
23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.

28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
50 And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
