淫妇获赦
8 众人都回家去了，耶稣却上了橄榄山。 2 第二天清晨，祂又回到圣殿。百姓聚集在祂那里，祂就坐下来教导他们。 3 这时候，律法教师和法利赛人带来一个通奸时被捉的女人，让她站在众人面前， 4 然后问耶稣：“老师，这个女人是在通奸时被捉到的。 5 按摩西的律法，我们要用石头把她打死，你说该怎么处置她呢？”
6 他们这样问是要使耶稣落在他们的圈套里，可以有借口控告祂。耶稣却只是弯着腰用指头在地上写字。 7 他们不断地追问耶稣，于是祂直起腰来，对他们说：“你们中间谁没有罪，谁就先拿石头打她吧。” 8 说完，又弯下腰在地上写字。
9 他们听了这句话，就从老到少一个一个地走了，只剩下耶稣和那个女人在那里。 10 耶稣直起腰来，说：“妇人，他们到哪里去了？没有人定你的罪吗？”
11 她说：“主啊，没有。”
耶稣说：“我也不定你的罪。回去吧，从今以后不要再犯罪了。”
世界的光
12 耶稣又对众人说：“我是世界的光，凡跟从我的，必不会走在黑暗里，必要得到生命的光。”
13 法利赛人对祂说：“你自己为自己做见证，你的见证不真实。”
14 耶稣说：“即便我自己为自己做见证，我的见证仍是真实的，因为我知道自己从哪里来、要到哪里去，你们却不知道我从哪里来、要到哪里去。 15 你们只凭外表判断别人，我却不判断人。 16 就算我判断人，我的判断也是正确的，因为我不是独自一人，还有差我来的父与我同在。 17 你们的律法不是说两个人做见证就有效吗？ 18 我是自己为自己做见证，差我来的父也为我做见证。”
19 他们问：“你的父在哪里？”
耶稣回答说：“你们不认识我，也不认识我的父。如果你们认识我，也会认识我的父。” 20 耶稣在圣殿的库房这样教导人，但没有人抓祂，因为祂的时候还没有到。
警告不信的人
21 耶稣又对他们说：“我要走了，你们会寻找我，你们将死在自己的罪中。我去的地方，你们不能去。”
22 犹太人说：“祂说祂去的地方我们不能去，难道祂想自杀吗？”
23 耶稣对他们说：“你们是从下面来的，我是从上面来的。你们属于这世界，我不属于这世界。 24 所以我说你们将死在自己的罪中，你们如果不相信我就是[a]那一位，一定会死在自己的罪中。”
25 他们问：“你到底是谁？”
耶稣回答说：“我不是早就告诉你们了吗？ 26 关于你们，我有许多要说、要审判的，但差我来的那位是真实的，我把从祂那里听到的告诉世人。” 27 他们不明白耶稣是指着父说的。
28 于是耶稣说：“你们举起人子以后，必知道我就是那一位，并且知道我没有一件事是凭自己做的，我所说的都是父教导我的。 29 差我来的那位跟我在一起，祂没有撇下我，让我孤单一人，因为我做的都是祂所喜悦的。” 30 许多人因为这番话而信了耶稣。
真正的自由
31 耶稣对信祂的犹太人说：“你们若持守我的道，就真是我的门徒了。 32 你们必认识真理，真理必叫你们得到自由。”
33 他们说：“我们是亚伯拉罕的子孙，从来没有做过奴隶，你为什么说我们可以得到自由呢？”
34 耶稣说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，所有犯罪的人都是罪的奴隶。 35 奴隶不能永远留在主人的家里，只有儿子才可以。 36 所以，如果上帝的儿子释放了你们，你们就真正自由了！
耶稣和亚伯拉罕
37 “我知道你们是亚伯拉罕的子孙，但你们却想杀我，因为你们心里容不下我的道。 38 我所说的，是我从父那里看到的，你们却照着你们父[b]的话去做。”
39 他们说：“我们的父就是亚伯拉罕！”
耶稣说：“你们如果真是亚伯拉罕的子孙，一定会做他所做的事。 40 我把从上帝那里听到的真理告诉你们，你们反要杀我，亚伯拉罕绝不做这样的事。 41 你们是在做你们父所做的事。”
他们说：“我们不是从淫乱生的！我们只有一位父，就是上帝。”
42 耶稣说：“如果上帝是你们的父，你们一定会爱我，因为我来自上帝。如今我在这里，我不是凭自己来的，而是上帝差我来的， 43 你们为什么不明白我的话呢？因为你们听不进去我的道。 44 你们是出于你们的父魔鬼，你们乐意顺着它的私欲行。魔鬼从起初就是个杀人凶手，从不站在真理这一边，因为它心里根本没有真理。撒谎是它的本性，因为它是撒谎者，又是撒谎者的始祖。 45 所以，我讲真理的时候，你们不信我。 46 你们谁能指证我有罪呢？我既然把真理告诉了你们，你们为什么还不信我呢？ 47 出于上帝的人听上帝的话，你们不听上帝的话，因为你们不是出于上帝。”

52 那些犹太人说：“现在我们的确知道你是被鬼附身了！亚伯拉罕和众先知都死了，你还说人如果遵行你的道，必永远不死。 53 难道你比我们的祖先亚伯拉罕还大吗？他死了，先知们也死了，你以为你是谁？”
54 耶稣说：“如果我为自己争取荣耀，那荣耀算不了什么。但使我得荣耀的是我的父，你们也称祂为你们的上帝。 55 你们不认识祂，我却认识祂。如果我说我不认识祂，那我就像你们一样是说谎的。然而，我认识祂，并且遵行祂的道。 56 你们的祖先亚伯拉罕曾经欢欢喜喜地盼望看见我来的日子。他看见了，就欢喜快乐。”
57 犹太人说：“你还不到五十岁，怎么会见过亚伯拉罕呢？”

The Woman Caught in Adultery
8 Then everyone went home, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early the next morning he went back to the Temple. All the people gathered around him, and he sat down and began to teach them. 3 The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery, and they made her stand before them all. 4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 (A)In our Law Moses commanded that such a woman must be stoned to death. Now, what do you say?” 6 They said this to trap Jesus, so that they could accuse him. But he bent over and wrote on the ground with his finger. 7 (B)As they stood there asking him questions, he straightened up and said to them, “Whichever one of you has committed no sin may throw the first stone at her.” 8 Then he bent over again and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard this, they all left, one by one, the older ones first. Jesus was left alone, with the woman still standing there. 10 He straightened up and said to her, “Where are they? Is there no one left to condemn you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she answered.
“Well, then,” Jesus said, “I do not condemn you either. Go, but do not sin again.”][a]
Jesus the Light of the World
12 (C)Jesus spoke to the Pharisees again. “I am the light of the world,” he said. “Whoever follows me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness.”
13 (D)The Pharisees said to him, “Now you are testifying on your own behalf; what you say proves nothing.”
14 “No,” Jesus answered, “even though I do testify on my own behalf, what I say is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. You do not know where I came from or where I am going. 15 You make judgments in a purely human way; I pass judgment on no one. 16 But if I were to do so, my judgment would be true, because I am not alone in this; the Father who sent me is with me. 17 (E)It is written in your Law that when two witnesses agree, what they say is true. 18 I testify on my own behalf, and the Father who sent me also testifies on my behalf.”
19 “Where is your father?” they asked him.
“You know neither me nor my Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
20 Jesus said all this as he taught in the Temple, in the room where the offering boxes were placed. And no one arrested him, because his hour had not come.
You Cannot Go Where I Am Going
21 Again Jesus said to them, “I will go away; you will look for me, but you will die in your sins. You cannot go where I am going.”
22 So the Jewish authorities said, “He says that we cannot go where he is going. Does this mean that he will kill himself?”
23 Jesus answered, “You belong to this world here below, but I come from above. You are from this world, but I am not from this world. 24 That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. And you will die in your sins if you do not believe that ‘I Am Who I Am’.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked him.
Jesus answered, “What I have told you from the very beginning.[b] 26 I have much to say about you, much to condemn you for. The one who sent me, however, is truthful, and I tell the world only what I have heard from him.”
27 They did not understand that Jesus was talking to them about the Father. 28 So he said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, you will know that ‘I Am Who I Am’; then you will know that I do nothing on my own authority, but I say only what the Father has instructed me to say. 29 And he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I always do what pleases him.”
30 Many who heard Jesus say these things believed in him.
The Truth Will Set You Free
31 So Jesus said to those who believed in him, “If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples; 32 (F)you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 (G)“We are the descendants of Abraham,” they answered, “and we have never been anybody's slaves. What do you mean, then, by saying, ‘You will be free’?”
34 Jesus said to them, “I am telling you the truth: everyone who sins is a slave of sin. 35 A slave does not belong to a family permanently, but a son belongs there forever. 36 If the Son sets you free, then you will be really free. 37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are trying to kill me, because you will not accept my teaching. 38 I talk about what my Father has shown me, but you do what your father has told you.”
39 They answered him, “Our father is Abraham.”
“If you really were Abraham's children,” Jesus replied, “you would do[c] the same things that he did. 40 All I have ever done is to tell you the truth I heard from God, yet you are trying to kill me. Abraham did nothing like this! 41 You are doing what your father did.”
“God himself is the only Father we have,” they answered, “and we are his true children.”
42 Jesus said to them, “If God really were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and now I am here. I did not come on my own authority, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my message. 44 (H)You are the children of your father, the Devil, and you want to follow your father's desires. From the very beginning he was a murderer and has never been on the side of truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he is only doing what is natural to him, because he is a liar and the father of all lies. 45 But I tell the truth, and that is why you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you can prove that I am guilty of sin? If I tell the truth, then why do you not believe me? 47 He who comes from God listens to God's words. You, however, are not from God, and that is why you will not listen.”
Jesus and Abraham
48 They asked Jesus, “Were we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon in you?”
49 “I have no demon,” Jesus answered. “I honor my Father, but you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking honor for myself. But there is one who is seeking it and who judges in my favor. 51 I am telling you the truth: whoever obeys my teaching will never die.”
52 They said to him, “Now we know for sure that you have a demon! Abraham died, and the prophets died, yet you say that whoever obeys your teaching will never die. 53 Our father Abraham died; you do not claim to be greater than Abraham, do you? And the prophets also died. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus answered, “If I were to honor myself, that honor would be worth nothing. The one who honors me is my Father—the very one you say is your God. 55 You have never known him, but I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he was to see the time of my coming; he saw it and was glad.”
57 They said to him, “You are not even fifty years old—and you have seen Abraham?”[d]
58 “I am telling you the truth,” Jesus replied. “Before Abraham was born, ‘I Am’.”
59 Then they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.

8 Pero Jesús se fue al monte de los Olivos. 2 Al amanecer se presentó de nuevo en el templo. Toda la gente se le acercó, y él se sentó a enseñarles. 3 Los maestros de la ley y los fariseos llevaron entonces a una mujer sorprendida en adulterio y, poniéndola en medio del grupo, 4 dijeron a Jesús:
―Maestro, a esta mujer se le ha sorprendido en el acto mismo de adulterio. 5 En la ley Moisés nos ordenó apedrear a tales mujeres. ¿Tú qué dices?
6 Con esta pregunta le estaban tendiendo una trampa, para tener de qué acusarlo. Pero Jesús se inclinó y con el dedo comenzó a escribir en el suelo. 7 Y, como ellos lo acosaran con preguntas, Jesús se incorporó y les dijo:
―Aquel de vosotros que esté libre de pecado, que tire la primera piedra.
8 E inclinándose de nuevo, siguió escribiendo en el suelo. 9 Al oír esto, se fueron retirando uno tras otro, comenzando por los más viejos, hasta dejar a Jesús solo con la mujer, que aún seguía allí. 10 Entonces se incorporó Jesús y le preguntó:
―Mujer, ¿dónde están?[a] ¿Ya nadie te condena?
11 ―Nadie, Señor.
―Tampoco yo te condeno. Ahora vete, y no vuelvas a pecar.
Validez del testimonio de Jesús
12 Una vez más, Jesús se dirigió a la gente, y les dijo:
―Yo soy la luz del mundo. El que me sigue no andará en tinieblas, sino que tendrá la luz de la vida.
13 ―Tú te presentas como tu propio testigo —alegaron los fariseos—, así que tu testimonio no es válido.
14 ―Aunque yo sea mi propio testigo —repuso Jesús—, mi testimonio es válido, porque sé de dónde he venido y a dónde voy. Pero vosotros no sabéis de dónde vengo ni a dónde voy. 15 Vosotros juzgáis según criterios humanos; yo, en cambio, no juzgo a nadie. 16 Y, si lo hago, mis juicios son válidos porque no los emito por mi cuenta, sino en unión con el Padre que me envió. 17 En vuestra ley está escrito que el testimonio de dos personas es válido. 18 Yo soy testigo de mí mismo, y el Padre que me envió también da testimonio de mí.
19 ―¿Dónde está tu padre?
―Si supierais quién soy yo, sabríais también quién es mi Padre.
20 Estas palabras las dijo Jesús en el lugar donde se depositaban las ofrendas, mientras enseñaba en el templo. Pero nadie le echó mano, porque aún no había llegado su tiempo.
Yo no soy de este mundo
21 De nuevo Jesús les dijo:
―Yo me voy, y vosotros me buscaréis, pero en vuestro pecado moriréis. Adonde yo voy, vosotros no podéis ir.
22 Comentaban, por tanto, los judíos: «¿Acaso piensa suicidarse? ¿Será por eso que dice: “Adonde yo voy, vosotros no podéis ir”?»
23 ―Vosotros sois de aquí abajo —continuó Jesús—; yo soy de allá arriba. Vosotros sois de este mundo; yo no soy de este mundo. 24 Por eso os he dicho que moriréis en vuestros pecados, pues, si no creéis que yo soy quien afirmo ser,[b] en vuestros pecados moriréis.
25 ―¿Quién eres tú? —le preguntaron.
―En primer lugar, ¿qué tengo que explicaros?[c] —contestó Jesús—. 26 Son muchas las cosas que tengo que decir y juzgar de vosotros. Pero el que me envió es veraz, y lo que le he oído decir es lo mismo que le repito al mundo.
27 Ellos no entendieron que les hablaba de su Padre. 28 Por eso Jesús añadió:
―Cuando hayáis levantado al Hijo del hombre, sabréis que yo soy, y que no hago nada por mi propia cuenta, sino que hablo conforme a lo que el Padre me ha enseñado. 29 El que me envió está conmigo; no me ha dejado solo, porque siempre hago lo que le agrada.
30 Mientras aún hablaba, muchos creyeron en él.
Los hijos de Abraham
31 Jesús se dirigió entonces a los judíos que habían creído en él, y les dijo:
―Si os mantenéis fieles a mis enseñanzas, seréis realmente mis discípulos; 32 y conoceréis la verdad, y la verdad os hará libres.
33 ―Nosotros somos descendientes de Abraham —le contestaron—, y nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo puedes decir que seremos liberados?
34 ―Ciertamente os aseguro que todo el que peca es esclavo del pecado —respondió Jesús—. 35 Ahora bien, el esclavo no se queda para siempre en la familia; pero el hijo sí se queda en ella para siempre. 36 Así que, si el Hijo os libera, seréis verdaderamente libres. 37 Yo sé que sois descendientes de Abraham. Sin embargo, procuráis matarme porque no está en vuestros planes aceptar mi palabra. 38 Yo hablo de lo que he visto en presencia del Padre; así también vosotros, haced lo que habéis escuchado del Padre.
39 ―Nuestro padre es Abraham —replicaron.
―Si fuerais hijos de Abraham, haríais lo mismo que él hizo. 40 Vosotros, en cambio, queréis matarme, ¡a mí, que os he expuesto la verdad que he recibido de parte de Dios! Abraham jamás haría tal cosa. 41 Vuestras obras son como las de vuestro padre.
―Nosotros no somos hijos nacidos de prostitución —le reclamaron—. Un solo Padre tenemos, y es Dios mismo.
Los hijos del diablo
42 ―Si Dios fuera vuestro Padre —les contestó Jesús—, vosotros me amaríais, porque yo he venido de Dios y aquí me tenéis. No he venido por mi propia cuenta, sino que él me envió. 43 ¿Por qué no entendéis mi modo de hablar? Porque no podéis aceptar mi palabra. 44 Vosotros sois de vuestro padre, el diablo, cuyos deseos queréis cumplir. Desde el principio este ha sido un asesino, y no se mantiene en la verdad, porque no hay verdad en él. Cuando miente, expresa su propia naturaleza, porque es un mentiroso. ¡Es el padre de la mentira! 45 Y sin embargo a mí, que os digo la verdad, no me creéis. 46 ¿Quién de vosotros puede probar que soy culpable de pecado? Si digo la verdad, ¿por qué no me creéis? 47 El que es de Dios escucha lo que Dios dice. Pero vosotros no escucháis, porque no sois de Dios.

49 ―No estoy poseído por ningún demonio —contestó Jesús—. Tan solo honro a mi Padre; pero vosotros me deshonráis a mí. 50 Yo no busco mi propia gloria; pero hay uno que la busca, y él es el juez. 51 Ciertamente os aseguro que el que cumple mi palabra nunca morirá.
52 ―¡Ahora estamos convencidos de que estás endemoniado! —exclamaron los judíos—. Abraham murió, y también los profetas, pero tú sales diciendo que, si alguno guarda tu palabra, nunca morirá. 53 ¿Acaso eres tú mayor que nuestro padre Abraham? Él murió, y también murieron los profetas. ¿Quién te crees tú?
54 ―Si yo me glorifico a mí mismo —les respondió Jesús—, mi gloria no significa nada. Pero quien me glorifica es mi Padre, el que vosotros decís que es vuestro Dios, 55 aunque no lo conocéis. Yo, en cambio, sí lo conozco. Si dijera que no lo conozco, sería tan mentiroso como vosotros; pero lo conozco y cumplo su palabra. 56 Abraham, vuestro padre, se regocijó al pensar que vería mi día; y lo vio y se alegró.
57 ―Ni a los cincuenta años llegas —le dijeron los judíos—, ¿y has visto a Abraham?
58 ―Ciertamente os aseguro que, antes de que Abraham naciera, ¡yo soy!
59 Entonces los judíos tomaron piedras para arrojárselas, pero Jesús se escondió y salió inadvertido del templo.[d]

2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.(B) 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(C) Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap,(D) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(E)
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(F) at her.”(G) 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,”(H) Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”(I)
Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am(J) the light of the world.(K) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(L)
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”(M)
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(N) But you have no idea where I come from(O) or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards;(P) I pass judgment on no one.(Q) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(R) 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(S) 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”(T)
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,”(U) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(V) 20 He spoke these words while teaching(W) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(X) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(Y)
Dispute Over Who Jesus Is
21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(Z) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(AA)
22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(AB) 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(AC) you will indeed die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(AD) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”(AE)
27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man,(AF) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(AG) 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(AH) for I always do what pleases him.”(AI) 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(AJ)
Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,(AK) you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(AL)
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants(AM) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(AN) 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(AO) 36 So if the Son sets you free,(AP) you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(AQ) because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(AR) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[b]”(AS)
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,”(AT) said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(AU) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(AV) Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”(AW)
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(AX)
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(AY) for I have come here from God.(AZ) I have not come on my own;(BA) God sent me.(BB) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(BC) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(BD) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(BE) 45 Yet because I tell the truth,(BF) you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.(BG) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Jesus’ Claims About Himself
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan(BH) and demon-possessed?”(BI)
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself;(BJ) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(BK)
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!(BL) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?(BM) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,(BN) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(BO) 55 Though you do not know him,(BP) I know him.(BQ) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(BR) 56 Your father Abraham(BS) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(BT) and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,(BU) I am!”(BV) 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(BW) but Jesus hid himself,(BX) slipping away from the temple grounds.
