耶稣使五千人吃饱
6 事后，耶稣渡过加利利湖，就是提比哩亚海。 2 许多人因为见过耶稣治病的神迹，就跟随了祂。 3 耶稣到了山上，与门徒一起坐下来。 4 那时，犹太人的逾越节快到了。 5 耶稣举目看见一大群人向祂走来，就对腓力说：“我们到哪里去买饼给他们吃呢？” 6 祂这样说是想试试腓力，其实祂知道应该怎么做。
7 腓力回答说：“就算买二百个银币[a]的饼，也不够他们每人一口啊！”
8 另外一个门徒——西门·彼得的弟弟安得烈对耶稣说： 9 “这里有个小孩子带了五个大麦饼和两条鱼。不过，这么多人，这一点东西实在无济于事。”
10 耶稣说：“你们叫大家坐下。”那地方草很多，众人便坐下来，当时在场的男人大约有五千。 11 耶稣拿起饼来祝谢后，分给坐着的众人，然后又照样分鱼，众人可以随意吃。 12 他们吃饱后，耶稣对门徒说：“把剩下的零碎收拾起来，免得浪费。”
13 他们便把大家吃剩的那五个大麦饼的零碎收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。 14 大家看见耶稣行的这个神迹，都说：“这人真是那位要来到世上的先知！” 15 耶稣知道他们想强行立祂做王，便独自退到山上。
耶稣在湖面上行走
16 傍晚的时候，门徒来到湖边， 17 上了船，去湖对岸的迦百农。天色已暗，耶稣还没到他们那里。 18 忽然，湖面上狂风大作，波涛汹涌。 19 门徒摇橹，大约行了五六公里，突然看见耶稣在水面上朝他们的船走来，他们很害怕。 20 耶稣对他们说：“是我，不要怕。” 21 于是门徒欢然接祂上船，船立刻到了目的地。
生命之粮
22 第二天，留在对岸的众人看见那里只有一条船，耶稣没有和门徒一起坐船离开。 23 后来有几条从提比哩亚来的小船停泊在岸边，靠近主祝谢后让众人吃饼的地方。 24 他们发现耶稣和门徒都不在那里，就乘船到迦百农去找祂。
25 他们在湖对岸找到了耶稣，对祂说：“老师，你什么时候到这里来的？”
26 耶稣回答说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，你们找我，并不是因为看见了神迹，而是因为你们有饼吃，并且吃饱了。 27 不要为那必坏的食物劳苦，要为那存到永生的食物，就是人子要赐给你们的食物劳苦，因为父上帝把这权柄交给了人子。”
28 众人问祂：“我们要怎样做，才算是做上帝的工作呢？”
29 耶稣说：“信上帝所差来的那位，就是做上帝的工作。”
30 他们又问：“那么，你行什么神迹让我们看了可以信你呢？你要做什么呢？ 31 我们的祖先在旷野有吗哪吃，正如圣经上说，‘祂赐下天粮给他们吃。’”
32 耶稣却说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，不是摩西从天上赐给了你们粮食，而是我父将天上的真粮食赐给你们。 33 因为上帝赐的粮就是从天降下、赐生命给世人的那位。”
34 他们说：“先生，求你把这种粮食天天赐给我们吧。”
35 耶稣说：“我就是生命的粮，到我这里来的人必定不饿，信我的人必永远不渴。 36 但我对你们说过，你们虽然亲眼看见我，仍然不信。 37 凡父赐给我的人，必到我这里来。到我这里来的，我总不丢弃他。 38 因为我从天上下来，不是要成就自己的旨意，而是要成就差我来者的旨意。 39 差我来者的旨意是，祂所赐给我的，我一个也不失掉，在末日我要叫他们复活。 40 因为我父的旨意是要叫一切看见儿子并相信的人得到永生，在末日，我要叫他们复活。”
41 犹太人听见耶稣说自己是从天上降下来的粮，就小声议论， 42 说：“这不是约瑟的儿子耶稣吗？祂的父母，我们都认识，祂现在怎么能说自己是从天上降下来的呢？”
43 耶稣回答他们说：“你们不用议论纷纷。 44 如果不是差我来的父吸引人到我这里来，没有人能来。到我这里来的，在末日，我要叫他复活。 45 先知书上这样说，‘他们都要受上帝的训诲’，这里是指凡听从父的教导又去效法的人，都会到我这里来。 46 这并不是说有人见过父，唯独从上帝而来的那位见过父。 47 我实实在在地告诉你们，信我的人有永生， 48 因为我是生命的粮。 49 你们的祖先在旷野吃过吗哪，还是死了。 50 但这是从天上降下来的粮，人吃了就不死。 51 我就是天上降下来的生命之粮，人吃了这粮，必永远活着。我将要赐下的粮就是我的肉，是为了让世人得到生命。”
52 犹太人开始彼此争论，说：“这个人怎么能把自己的肉给我们吃呢？”
53 耶稣说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，如果你们不吃人子的肉，不喝人子的血，就没有生命。 54 吃我肉、喝我血的人有永生，在末日，我要叫他复活。 55 因为我的肉是真粮食，我的血是真饮品， 56 吃我肉、喝我血的人常在我里面，我也常在他里面。 57 永活的父差我来，我是靠祂而活。同样，吃我肉的人也靠我而活。 58 我是从天上降下来的真粮，吃这粮的人必永远活着，不像你们的祖先，虽然吃过吗哪，最后还是死了。”
59 这番话是耶稣在迦百农会堂里教导人的时候讲的。
永生之道
60 祂的许多门徒听了，就议论说：“这话实在难懂，谁能接受呢？”
61 耶稣知道门徒在议论，就说：“这话叫你们失去信心吗？ 62 如果你们看见人子升到祂原来所在的地方，会怎么样呢？ 63 叫人活着的是灵，肉体毫无作用。我对你们说的话就是灵，就是生命。 64 然而，你们中间有些人不信。”因为耶稣一开始就知道谁不信祂、谁会出卖祂。
65 祂继续说：“所以我曾对你们说，如果不是我父赐恩，没有人能到我这里来。”
66 从此，很多门徒离开了，不再跟从耶稣。
67 于是耶稣问那十二个门徒：“你们也要离开我吗？”
68 西门·彼得答道：“主啊！你有永生之道，我们还跟从谁呢？ 69 我们已经相信并且知道你是上帝的圣者。”
70 耶稣说：“我不是拣选了你们十二个人吗？但其中有一个是魔鬼。” 71 耶稣这话是指着加略人西门的儿子犹大说的，因为他是十二个门徒之一，后来出卖了耶稣。

Jesús alimenta a los cinco mil
6 Después de esto, Jesús se fue al otro lado del mar de Galilea o de Tiberíades. 2 Mucha gente lo seguía, porque veía las señales milagrosas que él hacía en los enfermos. 3 Entonces Jesús subió a una colina y se sentó con sus discípulos. 4 Faltaba poco tiempo para la Pascua, la fiesta de los judíos. 5 Cuando Jesús alzó la vista, vio mucha gente que venía hacía él; entonces le dijo a Felipe:
―¿Dónde vamos a comprar pan para tanta gente?
6 Dijo esto para ponerlo a prueba, porque él ya sabía lo que iba a hacer.
7 Felipe respondió:
―Ni con el salario de ocho meses de trabajo nos alcanzaría para darle un pedazo de pan a tanta gente.
8 Andrés, que era otro de sus discípulos y hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo:
9 ―Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados. Pero, ¿qué es esto para tanta gente?
10 Jesús les ordenó:
―Díganle a la gente que se siente.
Allí había mucha hierba, así que todos se sentaron. Sólo los hombres eran como cinco mil. 11 Jesús tomó los panes, dio gracias y los fue repartiendo a los que estaban sentados. Luego hizo lo mismo con los pescados. Todos comieron cuanto quisieron.
12 Cuando ya todos estuvieron satisfechos, les dijo a sus discípulos:
―Recojan los pedazos que sobraron, para que no se desperdicie nada.
13 Ellos los recogieron, y con los pedazos que sobraron de los panes, llenaron doce canastas.
14 Al darse cuenta de la señal milagrosa que Jesús realizó, la gente comenzó a decir:
―No cabe duda de que este es el profeta que tenía que venir al mundo.
15 Jesús se dio cuenta de que querían llevárselo a la fuerza para hacerlo su rey, por lo que se retiró otra vez a la montaña él solo.
Jesús camina sobre el agua
16 Al anochecer, sus discípulos bajaron al lago, 17 subieron a una barca y comenzaron a cruzar el lago rumbo a Capernaúm. Ya había oscurecido y Jesús todavía no regresaba.
18 Soplaba un fuerte viento que levantó unas olas muy altas. 19 Los discípulos habían remado unos cinco o seis kilómetros cuando vieron que Jesús caminaba sobre el agua. Él venía hacia la barca y ellos se asustaron. 20 Pero él les dijo: «Soy yo, no tengan miedo». 21 Entonces lo recibieron con gusto en la barca y en seguida la barca llegó a la orilla a donde iban.
22 Al día siguiente, la gente que se había quedado en el otro lado del lago se dio cuenta de que los discípulos se habían ido solos en la única barca que había y que Jesús no se había ido en la barca con ellos. 23 Otras barcas de Tiberíades llegaron al lugar donde la gente había comido el pan después que el Señor diera gracias. 24 Cuando la gente se dio cuenta de que ni Jesús ni sus discípulos estaban allí, subió a las barcas y se fue a buscarlo a Capernaúm.
Jesús, el pan de vida
25 Cuando lo encontraron al otro lado del lago, le preguntaron:
―Maestro, ¿cuándo llegaste acá?
26 Jesús les respondió:
―La verdad es que ustedes me buscan, no porque han visto señales milagrosas sino porque comieron hasta llenarse. 27 No trabajen por la comida que se acaba. Trabajen más bien por la comida que permanece y da vida eterna, que es la comida que el Hijo del hombre les dará. Sobre él ha puesto Dios el Padre su sello de aprobación.
28 Le preguntaron:
―¿Qué tenemos que hacer para llevar a cabo las obras que Dios exige?
29 Jesús les respondió:
―La obra que Dios exige es que crean en aquel a quien él envió.
30 Ellos insistieron:
―¿Qué señal milagrosa harás para que al verla te creamos? ¿Qué puedes hacer? 31 Nuestros antepasados comieron el maná en el desierto, como dice la Escritura: “Les dio a comer pan del cielo”.
32 Jesús les respondió:
―Les aseguro que no fue Moisés el que les dio a ustedes el pan del cielo. Mi Padre es el que da el verdadero pan del cielo. 33 El pan que da Dios es el que baja del cielo y da vida al mundo.
34 Le dijeron:
―Señor, danos siempre ese pan.
35 Jesús les dijo:
―Yo soy el pan que da vida. El que viene a mí no volverá a tener hambre, y el que cree en mí no volverá a tener sed. 36 Pero como ya les dije, aunque ustedes me han visto, no creen en mí. 37 Todos los que el Padre me da vendrán a mí; y al que viene a mí, no lo rechazo. 38 Yo he venido del cielo a cumplir la voluntad del que me envió y no la mía. 39 Y esta es la voluntad del que me envió: que no pierda a ninguno de los que él me ha dado, sino que los resucite en el día final, 40 porque mi Padre quiere que todo el que reconozca al Hijo y crea en él, tenga vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final.
41 Entonces los judíos empezaron a murmurar contra Jesús, porque dijo: «Yo soy el pan que bajó del cielo». 42 Y decían: «¿No es este Jesús, el hijo de José? Nosotros conocemos a su padre y a su madre. ¿Cómo se atreve a decir que él bajó del cielo?».
43 Jesús les respondió:
―Dejen de murmurar. 44 Nadie puede venir a mí si el Padre que me envió no lo trae, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final. 45 En los profetas está escrito: “Dios les enseñará a todos”. Así que todos los que escuchan al Padre y aprenden de él, vienen a mí. 46 Nadie ha visto al Padre, sólo el que viene de Dios ha visto al Padre. 47 Les aseguro que el que cree tiene vida eterna. 48 Yo soy el pan de vida. 49 Los antepasados de ustedes comieron el maná en el desierto, y aun así murieron. 50 Pero yo soy el pan que baja del cielo; el que come de él, no muere. 51 Yo soy el pan vivo que bajó del cielo. El que coma de este pan vivirá para siempre. Este pan es mi carne, que daré para que el mundo viva.
52 Entonces los judíos se pusieron a discutir entre ellos, diciendo: «¿Cómo puede este darnos a comer su carne?».
53 Jesús les dijo:
―Les aseguro que si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre y no beben su sangre, no tienen realmente vida. 54 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre tiene vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final. 55 Porque mi carne es comida verdadera y mi sangre es bebida verdadera. 56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre vive unido a mí y yo vivo unido a él. 57 Yo vivo por el Padre viviente que me envió; por eso, el que come de mí, vivirá por mí. 58 Yo soy el pan que bajó del cielo. Los antepasados de ustedes comieron maná y, sin embargo, murieron; pero el que come de este pan vivirá para siempre.
59 Jesús enseñó todo esto en la sinagoga de Capernaúm.
Muchos discípulos abandonan a Jesús
60 Al escucharlo, muchos de sus discípulos dijeron: «Esto que tú enseñas es muy difícil de aceptar. ¿Quién puede estar de acuerdo con eso?».
61 Jesús comprendió que los discípulos estaban murmurando por lo que había dicho y les preguntó:
―¿Esto les ofende? 62 ¿Qué pasaría si vieran al Hijo del hombre subir a donde antes estaba? 63 El Espíritu es el que da vida; la carne no vale para nada. Las palabras que yo les he dicho son espíritu y vida. 64 Pero todavía hay algunos de ustedes que no creen.
Es que Jesús sabía desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían y quién lo traicionaría. Por eso dijo:
65 ―A eso me refería cuando les dije que nadie puede venir a mí, a menos que el Padre se lo permita.
66 Desde ese momento muchos de sus discípulos lo abandonaron. Entonces, Jesús les preguntó a los doce:
67 ―¿También ustedes quieren irse?
68 Simón Pedro le contestó:
―Señor, ¿a quién iríamos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. 69 Y nosotros hemos creído, y sabemos que eres el Santo de Dios.
70 Jesús les respondió:
―Yo los escogí a ustedes doce, pero uno de ustedes es un diablo.
71 Hablaba de Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, uno de los doce, que lo iba a traicionar.

Alimentación de los cinco mil

6 Después de esto, Jesús fue al otro lado del mar de Galilea, el de Tiberias. 2 Y le seguía gran multitud, porque veían las señales que hacía en los enfermos. 3 Entonces subió Jesús a un monte, y se sentó allí con sus discípulos. 4 Y estaba cerca la pascua, la fiesta de los judíos. 5 Cuando alzó Jesús los ojos, y vio que había venido a él gran multitud, dijo a Felipe: ¿De dónde compraremos pan para que coman estos? 6 Pero esto decía para probarle; porque él sabía lo que había de hacer. 7 Felipe le respondió: Doscientos denarios de pan no bastarían para que cada uno de ellos tomase un poco. 8 Uno de sus discípulos, Andrés, hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo: 9 Aquí está un muchacho, que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pececillos; mas ¿qué es esto para tantos? 10 Entonces Jesús dijo: Haced recostar la gente. Y había mucha hierba en aquel lugar; y se recostaron como en número de cinco mil varones. 11 Y tomó Jesús aquellos panes, y habiendo dado gracias, los repartió entre los discípulos, y los discípulos entre los que estaban recostados; asimismo de los peces, cuanto querían. 12 Y cuando se hubieron saciado, dijo a sus discípulos: Recoged los pedazos que sobraron, para que no se pierda nada. 13 Recogieron, pues, y llenaron doce cestas de pedazos, que de los cinco panes de cebada sobraron a los que habían comido. 14 Aquellos hombres entonces, viendo la señal que Jesús había hecho, dijeron: Este verdaderamente es el profeta que había de venir al mundo.
15 Pero entendiendo Jesús que iban a venir para apoderarse de él y hacerle rey, volvió a retirarse al monte él solo.
Jesús anda sobre el mar

16 Al anochecer, descendieron sus discípulos al mar, 17 y entrando en una barca, iban cruzando el mar hacia Capernaum. Estaba ya oscuro, y Jesús no había venido a ellos. 18 Y se levantaba el mar con un gran viento que soplaba. 19 Cuando habían remado como veinticinco o treinta estadios, vieron a Jesús que andaba sobre el mar y se acercaba a la barca; y tuvieron miedo. 20 Mas él les dijo: Yo soy; no temáis. 21 Ellos entonces con gusto le recibieron en la barca, la cual llegó en seguida a la tierra adonde iban.
La gente busca a Jesús
22 El día siguiente, la gente que estaba al otro lado del mar vio que no había habido allí más que una sola barca, y que Jesús no había entrado en ella con sus discípulos, sino que estos se habían ido solos. 23 Pero otras barcas habían arribado de Tiberias junto al lugar donde habían comido el pan después de haber dado gracias el Señor. 24 Cuando vio, pues, la gente que Jesús no estaba allí, ni sus discípulos, entraron en las barcas y fueron a Capernaum, buscando a Jesús.
Jesús, el pan de vida
25 Y hallándole al otro lado del mar, le dijeron: Rabí, ¿cuándo llegaste acá? 26 Respondió Jesús y les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo que me buscáis, no porque habéis visto las señales, sino porque comisteis el pan y os saciasteis. 27 Trabajad, no por la comida que perece, sino por la comida que a vida eterna permanece, la cual el Hijo del Hombre os dará; porque a este señaló Dios el Padre. 28 Entonces le dijeron: ¿Qué debemos hacer para poner en práctica las obras de Dios? 29 Respondió Jesús y les dijo: Esta es la obra de Dios, que creáis en el que él ha enviado. 30 Le dijeron entonces: ¿Qué señal, pues, haces tú, para que veamos, y te creamos? ¿Qué obra haces? 31 Nuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto,(A) como está escrito: Pan del cielo les dio a comer.(B) 32 Y Jesús les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo: No os dio Moisés el pan del cielo, mas mi Padre os da el verdadero pan del cielo. 33 Porque el pan de Dios es aquel que descendió del cielo y da vida al mundo. 34 Le dijeron: Señor, danos siempre este pan.
35 Jesús les dijo: Yo soy el pan de vida; el que a mí viene, nunca tendrá hambre; y el que en mí cree, no tendrá sed jamás. 36 Mas os he dicho, que aunque me habéis visto, no creéis. 37 Todo lo que el Padre me da, vendrá a mí; y al que a mí viene, no le echo fuera. 38 Porque he descendido del cielo, no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la voluntad del que me envió. 39 Y esta es la voluntad del Padre, el que me envió: Que de todo lo que me diere, no pierda yo nada, sino que lo resucite en el día postrero. 40 Y esta es la voluntad del que me ha enviado: Que todo aquel que ve al Hijo, y cree en él, tenga vida eterna; y yo le resucitaré en el día postrero.
41 Murmuraban entonces de él los judíos, porque había dicho: Yo soy el pan que descendió del cielo. 42 Y decían: ¿No es este Jesús, el hijo de José, cuyo padre y madre nosotros conocemos? ¿Cómo, pues, dice este: Del cielo he descendido? 43 Jesús respondió y les dijo: No murmuréis entre vosotros. 44 Ninguno puede venir a mí, si el Padre que me envió no le trajere; y yo le resucitaré en el día postrero. 45 Escrito está en los profetas: Y serán todos enseñados por Dios.(C) Así que, todo aquel que oyó al Padre, y aprendió de él, viene a mí. 46 No que alguno haya visto al Padre, sino aquel que vino de Dios; este ha visto al Padre. 47 De cierto, de cierto os digo: El que cree en mí, tiene vida eterna. 48 Yo soy el pan de vida. 49 Vuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto, y murieron. 50 Este es el pan que desciende del cielo, para que el que de él come, no muera. 51 Yo soy el pan vivo que descendió del cielo; si alguno comiere de este pan, vivirá para siempre; y el pan que yo daré es mi carne, la cual yo daré por la vida del mundo.
52 Entonces los judíos contendían entre sí, diciendo: ¿Cómo puede este darnos a comer su carne? 53 Jesús les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo: Si no coméis la carne del Hijo del Hombre, y bebéis su sangre, no tenéis vida en vosotros. 54 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna; y yo le resucitaré en el día postrero. 55 Porque mi carne es verdadera comida, y mi sangre es verdadera bebida. 56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, en mí permanece, y yo en él. 57 Como me envió el Padre viviente, y yo vivo por el Padre, asimismo el que me come, él también vivirá por mí. 58 Este es el pan que descendió del cielo; no como vuestros padres comieron el maná, y murieron; el que come de este pan, vivirá eternamente. 59 Estas cosas dijo en la sinagoga, enseñando en Capernaum.
Palabras de vida eterna
60 Al oírlas, muchos de sus discípulos dijeron: Dura es esta palabra; ¿quién la puede oír? 61 Sabiendo Jesús en sí mismo que sus discípulos murmuraban de esto, les dijo: ¿Esto os ofende? 62 ¿Pues qué, si viereis al Hijo del Hombre subir adonde estaba primero? 63 El espíritu es el que da vida; la carne para nada aprovecha; las palabras que yo os he hablado son espíritu y son vida. 64 Pero hay algunos de vosotros que no creen. Porque Jesús sabía desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían, y quién le había de entregar. 65 Y dijo: Por eso os he dicho que ninguno puede venir a mí, si no le fuere dado del Padre.
66 Desde entonces muchos de sus discípulos volvieron atrás, y ya no andaban con él. 67 Dijo entonces Jesús a los doce: ¿Queréis acaso iros también vosotros? 68 Le respondió Simón Pedro: Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. 69 Y nosotros hemos creído y conocemos que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios viviente.(D) 70 Jesús les respondió: ¿No os he escogido yo a vosotros los doce, y uno de vosotros es diablo? 71 Hablaba de Judas Iscariote, hijo de Simón; porque este era el que le iba a entregar, y era uno de los doce.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(A)
6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(B) he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(C) and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival(D) was near.
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(E) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(F) spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(G)
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(H) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14 After the people saw the sign(I) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(J) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(K) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(L)
Jesus Walks on the Water(M)
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[b] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(N) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(O) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(P) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(Q) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(R) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(S) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(T) when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(U) not because you saw the signs(V) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(W) to eternal life,(X) which the Son of Man(Y) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(Z) of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(AA) in the one he has sent.”(AB)
30 So they asked him, “What sign(AC) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(AD) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(AE) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]”(AF)
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(AG) and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(AH)
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(AI) the bread of life.(AJ) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(AK) in me will never be thirsty.(AL) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(AM) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven(AN) not to do my will but to do the will(AO) of him who sent me.(AP) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(AQ) but raise them up at the last day.(AR) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(AS) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(AT) and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(AU) whose father and mother we know?(AV) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(AW)
43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(AX) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[d](AY) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(AZ) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(BA) 48 I am the bread of life.(BB) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(BC) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(BD) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(BE) that came down from heaven.(BF) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(BG)
52 Then the Jews(BH) began to argue sharply among themselves,(BI) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(BJ) of the Son of Man(BK) and drink his blood,(BL) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(BM) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(BN) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(BO) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(BP) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(BQ) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(BR)
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(BS) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(BT) ascend to where he was before!(BU) 63 The Spirit gives life;(BV) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(BW) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(BX) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(BY)
66 From this time many of his disciples(BZ) turned back and no longer followed him.
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(CA)
68 Simon Peter answered him,(CB) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(CC) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(CD)
70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,(CE) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”(CF) 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,(CG) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)(CH)
