耶稣使五千人吃饱

6 事后，耶稣渡过加利利湖，就是提比哩亚海。 2 许多人因为见过耶稣治病的神迹，就跟随了祂。 3 耶稣到了山上，与门徒一起坐下来。 4 那时，犹太人的逾越节快到了。 5 耶稣举目看见一大群人向祂走来，就对腓力说：“我们到哪里去买饼给他们吃呢？” 6 祂这样说是想试试腓力，其实祂知道应该怎么做。

7 腓力回答说：“就算买二百个银币[a]的饼，也不够他们每人一口啊！”

8 另外一个门徒——西门·彼得的弟弟安得烈对耶稣说： 9 “这里有个小孩子带了五个大麦饼和两条鱼。不过，这么多人，这一点东西实在无济于事。”

10 耶稣说：“你们叫大家坐下。”那地方草很多，众人便坐下来，当时在场的男人大约有五千。 11 耶稣拿起饼来祝谢后，分给坐着的众人，然后又照样分鱼，众人可以随意吃。 12 他们吃饱后，耶稣对门徒说：“把剩下的零碎收拾起来，免得浪费。”

13 他们便把大家吃剩的那五个大麦饼的零碎收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。 14 大家看见耶稣行的这个神迹，都说：“这人真是那位要来到世上的先知！” 15 耶稣知道他们想强行立祂做王，便独自退到山上。

耶稣在湖面上行走

16 傍晚的时候，门徒来到湖边， 17 上了船，去湖对岸的迦百农。天色已暗，耶稣还没到他们那里。 18 忽然，湖面上狂风大作，波涛汹涌。 19 门徒摇橹，大约行了五六公里，突然看见耶稣在水面上朝他们的船走来，他们很害怕。 20 耶稣对他们说：“是我，不要怕。” 21 于是门徒欢然接祂上船，船立刻到了目的地。

生命之粮

22 第二天，留在对岸的众人看见那里只有一条船，耶稣没有和门徒一起坐船离开。 23 后来有几条从提比哩亚来的小船停泊在岸边，靠近主祝谢后让众人吃饼的地方。 24 他们发现耶稣和门徒都不在那里，就乘船到迦百农去找祂。

25 他们在湖对岸找到了耶稣，对祂说：“老师，你什么时候到这里来的？”

26 耶稣回答说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，你们找我，并不是因为看见了神迹，而是因为你们有饼吃，并且吃饱了。 27 不要为那必坏的食物劳苦，要为那存到永生的食物，就是人子要赐给你们的食物劳苦，因为父上帝把这权柄交给了人子。”

28 众人问祂：“我们要怎样做，才算是做上帝的工作呢？”

29 耶稣说：“信上帝所差来的那位，就是做上帝的工作。”

30 他们又问：“那么，你行什么神迹让我们看了可以信你呢？你要做什么呢？ 31 我们的祖先在旷野有吗哪吃，正如圣经上说，‘祂赐下天粮给他们吃。’”

32 耶稣却说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，不是摩西从天上赐给了你们粮食，而是我父将天上的真粮食赐给你们。 33 因为上帝赐的粮就是从天降下、赐生命给世人的那位。”

34 他们说：“先生，求你把这种粮食天天赐给我们吧。”

35 耶稣说：“我就是生命的粮，到我这里来的人必定不饿，信我的人必永远不渴。 36 但我对你们说过，你们虽然亲眼看见我，仍然不信。 37 凡父赐给我的人，必到我这里来。到我这里来的，我总不丢弃他。 38 因为我从天上下来，不是要成就自己的旨意，而是要成就差我来者的旨意。 39 差我来者的旨意是，祂所赐给我的，我一个也不失掉，在末日我要叫他们复活。 40 因为我父的旨意是要叫一切看见儿子并相信的人得到永生，在末日，我要叫他们复活。”

41 犹太人听见耶稣说自己是从天上降下来的粮，就小声议论， 42 说：“这不是约瑟的儿子耶稣吗？祂的父母，我们都认识，祂现在怎么能说自己是从天上降下来的呢？”

43 耶稣回答他们说：“你们不用议论纷纷。 44 如果不是差我来的父吸引人到我这里来，没有人能来。到我这里来的，在末日，我要叫他复活。 45 先知书上这样说，‘他们都要受上帝的训诲’，这里是指凡听从父的教导又去效法的人，都会到我这里来。 46 这并不是说有人见过父，唯独从上帝而来的那位见过父。 47 我实实在在地告诉你们，信我的人有永生， 48 因为我是生命的粮。 49 你们的祖先在旷野吃过吗哪，还是死了。 50 但这是从天上降下来的粮，人吃了就不死。 51 我就是天上降下来的生命之粮，人吃了这粮，必永远活着。我将要赐下的粮就是我的肉，是为了让世人得到生命。”

52 犹太人开始彼此争论，说：“这个人怎么能把自己的肉给我们吃呢？”

53 耶稣说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，如果你们不吃人子的肉，不喝人子的血，就没有生命。 54 吃我肉、喝我血的人有永生，在末日，我要叫他复活。 55 因为我的肉是真粮食，我的血是真饮品， 56 吃我肉、喝我血的人常在我里面，我也常在他里面。 57 永活的父差我来，我是靠祂而活。同样，吃我肉的人也靠我而活。 58 我是从天上降下来的真粮，吃这粮的人必永远活着，不像你们的祖先，虽然吃过吗哪，最后还是死了。”

59 这番话是耶稣在迦百农会堂里教导人的时候讲的。

永生之道

60 祂的许多门徒听了，就议论说：“这话实在难懂，谁能接受呢？”

61 耶稣知道门徒在议论，就说：“这话叫你们失去信心吗？ 62 如果你们看见人子升到祂原来所在的地方，会怎么样呢？ 63 叫人活着的是灵，肉体毫无作用。我对你们说的话就是灵，就是生命。 64 然而，你们中间有些人不信。”因为耶稣一开始就知道谁不信祂、谁会出卖祂。

65 祂继续说：“所以我曾对你们说，如果不是我父赐恩，没有人能到我这里来。”

66 从此，很多门徒离开了，不再跟从耶稣。

67 于是耶稣问那十二个门徒：“你们也要离开我吗？”

68 西门·彼得答道：“主啊！你有永生之道，我们还跟从谁呢？ 69 我们已经相信并且知道你是上帝的圣者。”

70 耶稣说：“我不是拣选了你们十二个人吗？但其中有一个是魔鬼。” 71 耶稣这话是指着加略人西门的儿子犹大说的，因为他是十二个门徒之一，后来出卖了耶稣。

Multiplication of the Loaves.[a] 1 (A)After this, Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee [of Tiberias].[b] 2 A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick. 3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish feast of Passover was near.(B) 5 [c]When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip,(C) “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” 6 [d]He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred days’ wages[e] worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little [bit].”(D) 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves[f] and two fish; but what good are these for so many?”(E) 10 Jesus said, “Have the people recline.” Now there was a great deal of grass[g] in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number.(F) 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.(G) 12 When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.” 13 So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets[h] with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat. 14 When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, “This is truly the Prophet,[i] the one who is to come into the world.”(H) 15 Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone.(I)

Walking on the Water.[j] 16 (J)When it was evening, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum. It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea[k] and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid.(K) 20 But he said to them, “It is I.[l] Do not be afraid.” 21 They wanted to take him into the boat, but the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading.

The Bread of Life Discourse. 22 [m]The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat, but only his disciples had left. 23 [n]Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread when the Lord gave thanks. 24 When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. 25 And when they found him across the sea they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life,[o] which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.”(L) 28 So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” 30 So they said to him, “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do?(M) 31 [p]Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written:(N)

‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

32 So Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.(O) 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 (P)So they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” 35 [q]Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.(Q) 36 But I told you that although you have seen [me], you do not believe.(R) 37 Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, 38 because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.(S) 39 And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it [on] the last day.(T) 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him [on] the last day.”(U)

41 The Jews murmured about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” 42 and they said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”(V) 43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop murmuring[r] among yourselves.(W) 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets:

‘They shall all be taught by God.’

Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me.(X) 46 Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.(Y) 47 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;(Z) 50 this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”(AA)

52 The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?” 53 Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. 54 Whoever eats[s] my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.(AB) 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.” 59 These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life.[t] 60 Then many of his disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” 61 Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? 62 What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?[u] 63 It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh[v] is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him.(AC) 65 And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.”

66 As a result of this, many [of] his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. 67 Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”(AD) 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you twelve? Yet is not one of you a devil?” 71 He was referring to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot; it was he who would betray him, one of the Twelve.(AE)

  1. 6:1–15 This story of the multiplication of the loaves is the fourth sign (cf. note on Jn 5:1–47). It is the only miracle story found in all four gospels (occurring twice in Mark and Matthew). See notes on Mt 14:13–21; 15:32–39. John differs on the roles of Philip and Andrew, the proximity of Passover (Jn 6:4), and the allusion to Elisha (see Jn 6:9). The story here symbolizes the food that is really available through Jesus. It connotes a new exodus and has eucharistic overtones.
  2. 6:1 [Of Tiberias]: the awkward apposition represents a later name of the Sea of Galilee. It was probably originally a marginal gloss.
  3. 6:5 Jesus takes the initiative (in the synoptics, the disciples do), possibly pictured as (cf. Jn 6:14) the new Moses (cf. Nm 11:13).
  4. 6:6 Probably the evangelist’s comment; in this gospel Jesus is never portrayed as ignorant of anything.
  5. 6:7 Days’ wages: literally, “denarii”; a Roman denarius is a day’s wage in Mt 20:2.
  6. 6:9 Barley loaves: the food of the poor. There seems an allusion to the story of Elisha multiplying the barley bread in 2 Kgs 4:42–44.
  7. 6:10 Grass: implies springtime, and therefore Passover. Five thousand: so Mk 6:39, 44 and parallels.
  8. 6:13 Baskets: the word describes the typically Palestinian wicker basket, as in Mk 6:43 and parallels.
  9. 6:14 The Prophet: probably the prophet like Moses (see note on Jn 1:21). The one who is to come into the world: probably Elijah; cf. Mal 3:1, 23.
  10. 6:16–21 The fifth sign is a nature miracle, portraying Jesus sharing Yahweh’s power. Cf. the parallel stories following the multiplication of the loaves in Mk 6:45–52 and Mt 14:22–33.
  11. 6:19 Walking on the sea: although the Greek (cf. Jn 6:16) could mean “on the seashore” or “by the sea” (cf. Jn 21:1), the parallels, especially Mt 14:25, make clear that Jesus walked upon the water. John may allude to Jb 9:8: God “treads upon the crests of the sea.”
  12. 6:20 It is I: literally, “I am.” See also notes on Jn 4:26 and Mk 6:50.
  13. 6:22–71 Discourse on the bread of life; replacement of the manna. Jn 6:22–34 serve as an introduction, Jn 6:35–59 constitute the discourse proper, Jn 6:60–71 portray the reaction of the disciples and Peter’s confession.

  19. 6:54–58 Eats: the verb used in these verses is not the classical Greek verb used of human eating, but that of animal eating: “munch,” “gnaw.” This may be part of John’s emphasis on the reality of the flesh and blood of Jesus (cf. Jn 6:55), but the same verb eventually became the ordinary verb in Greek meaning “eat.”
  20. 6:60–71 These verses refer more to themes of Jn 6:35–50 than to those of Jn 6:51–58 and seem to be addressed to members of the Johannine community who found it difficult to accept the high christology reflected in the bread of life discourse.
  21. 6:62 This unfinished conditional sentence is obscure. Probably there is a reference to Jn 6:49–51. Jesus claims to be the bread that comes down from heaven (Jn 6:50); this claim provokes incredulity (Jn 6:60); and so Jesus is pictured as asking what his disciples will say when he goes up to heaven.
  22. 6:63 Spirit…flesh: probably not a reference to the eucharistic body of Jesus but to the supernatural and the natural, as in Jn 3:6. Spirit and life: all Jesus said about the bread of life is the revelation of the Spirit.

6 Algún tiempo después, Jesús se fue a la otra orilla del mar de Galilea (o de Tiberíades). 2 Y mucha gente lo seguía, porque veían las señales milagrosas que hacía en los enfermos. 3 Entonces subió Jesús a una colina y se sentó con sus discípulos. 4 Faltaba muy poco tiempo para la fiesta judía de la Pascua.

5 Cuando Jesús alzó la vista y vio una gran multitud que venía hacia él, dijo a Felipe:

―¿Dónde vamos a comprar pan para que coma esta gente?

6 Esto lo dijo solo para ponerlo a prueba, porque él ya sabía lo que iba a hacer.

7 ―Ni con el salario de ocho meses[a] podríamos comprar suficiente pan para darle un pedazo a cada uno —respondió Felipe.

8 Otro de sus discípulos, Andrés, que era hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo:

9 ―Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados, pero ¿qué es esto para tanta gente?

10 ―Haced que se sienten todos —ordenó Jesús.

En ese lugar había mucha hierba. Así que se sentaron, y los varones adultos eran como cinco mil. 11 Jesús tomó entonces los panes, dio gracias y distribuyó a los que estaban sentados todo lo que quisieron. Lo mismo hizo con los pescados.

12 Una vez quedaron satisfechos, dijo a sus discípulos:

―Recoged los pedazos que han sobrado, para que no se desperdicie nada.

13 Así lo hicieron y, con los pedazos de los cinco panes de cebada que les sobraron a los que habían comido, llenaron doce canastas.

14 Al ver la señal que Jesús había realizado, la gente comenzó a decir: «En verdad este es el profeta, el que ha de venir al mundo». 15 Pero Jesús, dándose cuenta de que querían llevárselo a la fuerza y declararlo rey, se retiró de nuevo a la montaña él solo.

Jesús camina sobre el agua(B)

16 Cuando ya anochecía, sus discípulos bajaron al lago 17 y subieron a una barca, y comenzaron a cruzar el lago en dirección a Capernaún. Para entonces ya había oscurecido, y Jesús todavía no se había unido a ellos. 18 Por causa del fuerte viento que soplaba, el lago estaba picado. 19 Habrían remado unos cinco o seis kilómetros[b] cuando vieron que Jesús se acercaba a la barca, caminando sobre el agua, y se asustaron. 20 Pero él les dijo: «No tengáis miedo, que soy yo». 21 Así que se dispusieron a subirlo a bordo, y en seguida la barca llegó a la orilla adonde se dirigían.

22 Al día siguiente, la multitud que se había quedado en el otro lado del lago se dio cuenta de que los discípulos se habían embarcado solos. Allí solo había una barca, y Jesús no había entrado en ella con sus discípulos. 23 Sin embargo, algunas barcas de Tiberíades se aproximaron al lugar donde la gente había comido el pan después de haber dado gracias el Señor. 24 En cuanto la multitud se dio cuenta de que ni Jesús ni sus discípulos estaban allí, subieron a las barcas y se fueron a Capernaún a buscar a Jesús.

Jesús, el pan de vida

25 Cuando lo encontraron al otro lado del lago, le preguntaron:

―Rabí, ¿cuándo llegaste aquí?

26 ―Ciertamente os aseguro que me buscáis no porque habéis visto señales, sino porque comisteis pan hasta llenaros. 27 Trabajad, pero no por la comida que es perecedera, sino por la que permanece para vida eterna, la cual os dará el Hijo del hombre. Sobre este ha puesto Dios el Padre su sello de aprobación.

28 ―¿Qué tenemos que hacer para realizar las obras que Dios exige? —le preguntaron.

29 ―Esta es la obra de Dios: que creáis en aquel a quien él envió —respondió Jesús.

30 ―¿Y qué señal harás para que la veamos y te creamos? ¿Qué puedes hacer? —insistieron ellos—. 31 Nuestros antepasados comieron el maná en el desierto, como está escrito: “Pan del cielo les dio a comer”.[c]

32 ―Ciertamente os aseguro que no fue Moisés el que os dio el pan del cielo —afirmó Jesús—. El que da el verdadero pan del cielo es mi Padre. 33 El pan de Dios es el que baja del cielo y da vida al mundo.

34 ―Señor —le pidieron—, danos siempre ese pan.

35 ―Yo soy el pan de vida —declaró Jesús—. El que a mí viene nunca pasará hambre, y el que en mí cree nunca más volverá a tener sed. 36 Pero, como ya os dije, a pesar de que me habéis visto, no creéis. 37 Todos los que el Padre me da vendrán a mí; y al que a mí viene, no lo rechazo. 38 Porque he bajado del cielo no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la del que me envió. 39 Y esta es la voluntad del que me envió: que no pierda nada de lo que él me ha dado, sino que lo resucite en el día final. 40 Porque la voluntad de mi Padre es que todo el que reconozca al Hijo y crea en él tenga vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final.

41 Entonces los judíos comenzaron a murmurar contra él, porque dijo: «Yo soy el pan que bajó del cielo». 42 Y se decían: «¿Acaso no es este Jesús, el hijo de José? ¿No conocemos a su padre y a su madre? ¿Cómo es que sale diciendo: “Yo bajé del cielo”?»

43 ―Dejad de murmurar —replicó Jesús—. 44 Nadie puede venir a mí si no lo atrae el Padre que me envió, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final. 45 En los profetas está escrito: “A todos los instruirá Dios”.[d] En efecto, todo el que escucha al Padre y aprende de él viene a mí. 46 Al Padre nadie lo ha visto, excepto el que viene de Dios; solo él ha visto al Padre. 47 Ciertamente os aseguro que el que cree tiene vida eterna. 48 Yo soy el pan de vida. 49 Vuestros antepasados comieron el maná en el desierto, y sin embargo murieron. 50 Pero este es el pan que baja del cielo; el que come de él no muere. 51 Yo soy el pan vivo que bajó del cielo. Si alguno come de este pan, vivirá para siempre. Este pan es mi carne, que daré para que el mundo viva.

52 Los judíos comenzaron a disputar acaloradamente entre sí: «¿Cómo puede este darnos a comer su carne?»

53 ―Ciertamente os aseguro —afirmó Jesús— que, si no coméis la carne del Hijo del hombre ni bebéis su sangre, no tenéis realmente vida. 54 El que come[e] mi carne y bebe mi sangre tiene vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final. 55 Porque mi carne es verdadera comida y mi sangre es verdadera bebida. 56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre permanece en mí y yo en él. 57 Así como me envió el Padre viviente, y yo vivo por el Padre, también el que come de mí vivirá por mí. 58 Este es el pan que bajó del cielo. Vuestros antepasados comieron maná y murieron, pero el que come de este pan vivirá para siempre.

59 Todo esto lo dijo Jesús mientras enseñaba en la sinagoga de Capernaún.

Muchos discípulos abandonan a Jesús

60 Al escucharlo, muchos de sus discípulos exclamaron: «Esta enseñanza es muy difícil; ¿quién puede aceptarla?»

61 Jesús, muy consciente de que sus discípulos murmuraban por lo que había dicho, les reprochó:

―¿Esto os es causa de tropiezo? 62 ¿Y si vierais al Hijo del hombre subir adonde estaba antes? 63 El Espíritu da vida; la carne no vale para nada. Las palabras que os he hablado son espíritu y son vida. 64 Sin embargo, hay algunos de vosotros que no creen.

Es que Jesús conocía desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían y quién era el que iba a traicionarlo. Así que añadió:

65 ―Por esto os dije que nadie puede venir a mí, a menos que se lo haya concedido el Padre.

66 Desde entonces muchos de sus discípulos le volvieron la espalda y ya no andaban con él. Así que Jesús preguntó a los doce:

67 ―¿También vosotros queréis marcharos?

68 ―Señor —contestó Simón Pedro—, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. 69 Y nosotros hemos creído, y sabemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios.[f]

70 ―¿No os he escogido yo a vosotros doce? —repuso Jesús—. No obstante, uno de vosotros es un diablo.

71 Se refería a Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, uno de los doce, que iba a traicionarlo.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(A)

6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(B) he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(C) and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival(D) was near.

5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(E) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(F) spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(G)

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(H) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

14 After the people saw the sign(I) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(J) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(K) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(L)

Jesus Walks on the Water(M)

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[b] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(N) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(O) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(P) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(Q) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(R) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(S) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.

Jesus the Bread of Life

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(T) when did you get here?”

26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(U) not because you saw the signs(V) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(W) to eternal life,(X) which the Son of Man(Y) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(Z) of approval.”

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(AA) in the one he has sent.”(AB)

30 So they asked him, “What sign(AC) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(AD) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(AE) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]”(AF)

32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(AG) and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(AH)

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(AI) the bread of life.(AJ) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(AK) in me will never be thirsty.(AL) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(AM) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven(AN) not to do my will but to do the will(AO) of him who sent me.(AP) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(AQ) but raise them up at the last day.(AR) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(AS) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(AT) and I will raise them up at the last day.”

41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(AU) whose father and mother we know?(AV) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(AW)

43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(AX) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[d](AY) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(AZ) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(BA) 48 I am the bread of life.(BB) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(BC) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(BD) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(BE) that came down from heaven.(BF) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(BG)

52 Then the Jews(BH) began to argue sharply among themselves,(BI) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(BJ) of the Son of Man(BK) and drink his blood,(BL) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(BM) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(BN) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(BO) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(BP) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(BQ) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(BR)

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(BS) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(BT) ascend to where he was before!(BU) 63 The Spirit gives life;(BV) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(BW) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(BX) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(BY)

66 From this time many of his disciples(BZ) turned back and no longer followed him.

67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(CA)

68 Simon Peter answered him,(CB) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(CC) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(CD)

70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,(CE) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”(CF) 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,(CG) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)(CH)
