耶稣使五千人吃饱
6 事后，耶稣渡过加利利湖，就是提比哩亚海。 2 许多人因为见过耶稣治病的神迹，就跟随了祂。 3 耶稣到了山上，与门徒一起坐下来。 4 那时，犹太人的逾越节快到了。 5 耶稣举目看见一大群人向祂走来，就对腓力说：“我们到哪里去买饼给他们吃呢？” 6 祂这样说是想试试腓力，其实祂知道应该怎么做。
7 腓力回答说：“就算买二百个银币[a]的饼，也不够他们每人一口啊！”
8 另外一个门徒——西门·彼得的弟弟安得烈对耶稣说： 9 “这里有个小孩子带了五个大麦饼和两条鱼。不过，这么多人，这一点东西实在无济于事。”
10 耶稣说：“你们叫大家坐下。”那地方草很多，众人便坐下来，当时在场的男人大约有五千。 11 耶稣拿起饼来祝谢后，分给坐着的众人，然后又照样分鱼，众人可以随意吃。 12 他们吃饱后，耶稣对门徒说：“把剩下的零碎收拾起来，免得浪费。”
13 他们便把大家吃剩的那五个大麦饼的零碎收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。 14 大家看见耶稣行的这个神迹，都说：“这人真是那位要来到世上的先知！” 15 耶稣知道他们想强行立祂做王，便独自退到山上。
耶稣在湖面上行走
16 傍晚的时候，门徒来到湖边， 17 上了船，去湖对岸的迦百农。天色已暗，耶稣还没到他们那里。 18 忽然，湖面上狂风大作，波涛汹涌。 19 门徒摇橹，大约行了五六公里，突然看见耶稣在水面上朝他们的船走来，他们很害怕。 20 耶稣对他们说：“是我，不要怕。” 21 于是门徒欢然接祂上船，船立刻到了目的地。
生命之粮
22 第二天，留在对岸的众人看见那里只有一条船，耶稣没有和门徒一起坐船离开。 23 后来有几条从提比哩亚来的小船停泊在岸边，靠近主祝谢后让众人吃饼的地方。 24 他们发现耶稣和门徒都不在那里，就乘船到迦百农去找祂。
25 他们在湖对岸找到了耶稣，对祂说：“老师，你什么时候到这里来的？”
26 耶稣回答说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，你们找我，并不是因为看见了神迹，而是因为你们有饼吃，并且吃饱了。 27 不要为那必坏的食物劳苦，要为那存到永生的食物，就是人子要赐给你们的食物劳苦，因为父上帝把这权柄交给了人子。”
28 众人问祂：“我们要怎样做，才算是做上帝的工作呢？”
29 耶稣说：“信上帝所差来的那位，就是做上帝的工作。”
30 他们又问：“那么，你行什么神迹让我们看了可以信你呢？你要做什么呢？ 31 我们的祖先在旷野有吗哪吃，正如圣经上说，‘祂赐下天粮给他们吃。’”
32 耶稣却说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，不是摩西从天上赐给了你们粮食，而是我父将天上的真粮食赐给你们。 33 因为上帝赐的粮就是从天降下、赐生命给世人的那位。”
34 他们说：“先生，求你把这种粮食天天赐给我们吧。”
35 耶稣说：“我就是生命的粮，到我这里来的人必定不饿，信我的人必永远不渴。 36 但我对你们说过，你们虽然亲眼看见我，仍然不信。 37 凡父赐给我的人，必到我这里来。到我这里来的，我总不丢弃他。 38 因为我从天上下来，不是要成就自己的旨意，而是要成就差我来者的旨意。 39 差我来者的旨意是，祂所赐给我的，我一个也不失掉，在末日我要叫他们复活。 40 因为我父的旨意是要叫一切看见儿子并相信的人得到永生，在末日，我要叫他们复活。”
41 犹太人听见耶稣说自己是从天上降下来的粮，就小声议论， 42 说：“这不是约瑟的儿子耶稣吗？祂的父母，我们都认识，祂现在怎么能说自己是从天上降下来的呢？”
43 耶稣回答他们说：“你们不用议论纷纷。 44 如果不是差我来的父吸引人到我这里来，没有人能来。到我这里来的，在末日，我要叫他复活。 45 先知书上这样说，‘他们都要受上帝的训诲’，这里是指凡听从父的教导又去效法的人，都会到我这里来。 46 这并不是说有人见过父，唯独从上帝而来的那位见过父。 47 我实实在在地告诉你们，信我的人有永生， 48 因为我是生命的粮。 49 你们的祖先在旷野吃过吗哪，还是死了。 50 但这是从天上降下来的粮，人吃了就不死。 51 我就是天上降下来的生命之粮，人吃了这粮，必永远活着。我将要赐下的粮就是我的肉，是为了让世人得到生命。”
52 犹太人开始彼此争论，说：“这个人怎么能把自己的肉给我们吃呢？”
53 耶稣说：“我实实在在地告诉你们，如果你们不吃人子的肉，不喝人子的血，就没有生命。 54 吃我肉、喝我血的人有永生，在末日，我要叫他复活。 55 因为我的肉是真粮食，我的血是真饮品， 56 吃我肉、喝我血的人常在我里面，我也常在他里面。 57 永活的父差我来，我是靠祂而活。同样，吃我肉的人也靠我而活。 58 我是从天上降下来的真粮，吃这粮的人必永远活着，不像你们的祖先，虽然吃过吗哪，最后还是死了。”
59 这番话是耶稣在迦百农会堂里教导人的时候讲的。
永生之道
60 祂的许多门徒听了，就议论说：“这话实在难懂，谁能接受呢？”
61 耶稣知道门徒在议论，就说：“这话叫你们失去信心吗？ 62 如果你们看见人子升到祂原来所在的地方，会怎么样呢？ 63 叫人活着的是灵，肉体毫无作用。我对你们说的话就是灵，就是生命。 64 然而，你们中间有些人不信。”因为耶稣一开始就知道谁不信祂、谁会出卖祂。
65 祂继续说：“所以我曾对你们说，如果不是我父赐恩，没有人能到我这里来。”
66 从此，很多门徒离开了，不再跟从耶稣。
67 于是耶稣问那十二个门徒：“你们也要离开我吗？”
68 西门·彼得答道：“主啊！你有永生之道，我们还跟从谁呢？ 69 我们已经相信并且知道你是上帝的圣者。”
70 耶稣说：“我不是拣选了你们十二个人吗？但其中有一个是魔鬼。” 71 耶稣这话是指着加略人西门的儿子犹大说的，因为他是十二个门徒之一，后来出卖了耶稣。

Jesús alimenta a cinco mil personas(A)
6 Algún tiempo después, Jesús se fue a la otra orilla del lago de Galilea o de Tiberíades. 2 Y mucha gente lo seguía porque veían las señales que hacía en los enfermos. 3 Entonces subió Jesús a una colina y se sentó con sus discípulos. 4 Faltaba muy poco tiempo para la fiesta judía de la Pascua.
5 Cuando Jesús alzó la vista y vio una gran multitud que venía hacia él, dijo a Felipe:
—¿Dónde vamos a comprar pan para que coma esta gente?
6 Esto lo dijo solo para ponerlo a prueba, porque él ya sabía lo que iba a hacer.
7 —Ni con el salario de más de seis meses de trabajo[a] podríamos comprar suficiente pan para darle un pedazo a cada uno —respondió Felipe.
8 Otro de sus discípulos, Andrés, que era hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo:
9 —Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados, pero ¿qué es esto para tanta gente?
10 —Hagan que se sienten todos —ordenó Jesús.
En ese lugar había mucha hierba, así que se sentaron. Los varones adultos eran como cinco mil. 11 Jesús tomó entonces los panes, dio gracias y distribuyó a los que estaban sentados todo lo que quisieron. Lo mismo hizo con los pescados.
12 Una vez que quedaron satisfechos, dijo a sus discípulos:
—Recojan los pedazos que sobraron, para que no se desperdicie nada.
13 Así que recogieron los pedazos que habían sobrado de los cinco panes de cebada y llenaron doce canastas.
14 Al ver la señal milagrosa que Jesús había realizado, la gente comenzó a decir: «En verdad este es el profeta que había de venir al mundo». 15 Pero Jesús, dándose cuenta de que querían llevárselo a la fuerza y declararlo rey, se retiró de nuevo a la montaña él solo.
Jesús camina sobre el agua(B)
16 Cuando ya anochecía, sus discípulos bajaron al lago, 17 subieron a una barca y comenzaron a cruzar el lago en dirección a Capernaúm. Para entonces ya había oscurecido y Jesús todavía no se les había unido. 18 Por causa del fuerte viento que soplaba, el lago estaba agitado. 19 Habrían remado unos cinco o seis kilómetros[b] cuando vieron que Jesús se acercaba a la barca, caminando sobre el agua, y se asustaron. 20 Pero él les dijo: «Soy yo. No tengan miedo». 21 Así que se dispusieron a recibirlo a bordo y enseguida la barca llegó a la playa, lugar al que se dirigían.
22 Al día siguiente, la multitud que estaba aún en el otro lado del lago se dio cuenta de que los discípulos habían embarcado solos. Lo supieron porque allí había estado una sola barca y Jesús no había entrado en ella con sus discípulos. 23 Sin embargo, algunas barcas de Tiberíades se aproximaron al lugar donde la gente había comido el pan después de haber dado gracias el Señor. 24 En cuanto la multitud se dio cuenta de que ni Jesús ni sus discípulos estaban allí, subieron a las barcas y se fueron a Capernaúm a buscar a Jesús.
Jesús, el pan de vida
25 Cuando lo encontraron al otro lado del lago, le preguntaron:
—Rabí, ¿cuándo llegaste acá?
26 Jesús respondió con firmeza:
—Les aseguro que ustedes me buscan no porque han visto señales, sino porque comieron pan hasta llenarse. 27 Trabajen, pero no por la comida que es perecedera, sino por la que permanece para vida eterna, la cual les dará el Hijo del hombre. Dios el Padre ha puesto sobre él su sello de aprobación.
28 —¿Qué tenemos que hacer para realizar las obras que Dios exige? —le preguntaron.
29 —Esto es lo que Dios quiere que hagan: que crean en aquel a quien él envió —respondió Jesús.
30 —¿Y qué señal milagrosa harás para que la veamos y te creamos? ¿Qué puedes hacer? —insistieron ellos—. 31 Nuestros antepasados comieron el maná en el desierto, como está escrito: “Pan del cielo les dio a comer”.[c]
32 —Les aseguro que no fue Moisés el que les dio a ustedes el pan del cielo —afirmó Jesús—. El que da el verdadero pan del cielo es mi Padre. 33 El pan de Dios es el que baja del cielo y da vida al mundo.
34 —Señor —le pidieron—, danos siempre ese pan.
35 —Yo soy el pan de vida —declaró Jesús—. El que a mí viene nunca pasará hambre y el que en mí cree nunca más volverá a tener sed. 36 Pero como ya les dije, a pesar de que ustedes me han visto, no creen. 37 Todos los que el Padre me da vendrán a mí; y el que a mí viene no lo rechazo. 38 Porque he bajado del cielo no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la del que me envió. 39 Y esta es la voluntad del que me envió: que yo no pierda nada de lo que él me ha dado, sino que lo resucite en el día final. 40 Porque la voluntad de mi Padre es que todo el que ve al Hijo y crea en él tenga vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final.
41 Entonces los judíos comenzaron a murmurar contra él, porque dijo: «Yo soy el pan que bajó del cielo». 42 Y se decían: «¿Acaso no es este Jesús, el hijo de José? ¿No conocemos a su padre y a su madre? ¿Cómo es que sale diciendo: “Yo bajé del cielo”?».
43 —Dejen de murmurar —respondió Jesús—. 44 Nadie puede venir a mí, si no lo trae el Padre que me envió, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final. 45 En los Profetas está escrito: “A todos los instruirá Dios”.[d] En efecto, todo el que escucha al Padre y aprende de él viene a mí. 46 Al Padre nadie lo ha visto, excepto el que viene de Dios; solo él ha visto al Padre. 47 Les aseguro que el que cree tiene vida eterna. 48 Yo soy el pan de vida. 49 Los antepasados de ustedes comieron el maná en el desierto; sin embargo, murieron. 50 Pero este es el pan que baja del cielo; el que come de él no muere. 51 Yo soy el pan vivo que bajó del cielo. Si alguno come de este pan, vivirá para siempre. Este pan es mi carne y lo daré para que el mundo viva.
52 Los judíos comenzaron a disputar acaloradamente entre sí: «¿Cómo puede este darnos a comer su carne?».
53 —Les aseguro —afirmó Jesús— que, si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre ni beben su sangre, no tienen realmente vida. 54 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre tiene vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final. 55 Porque mi carne es verdadera comida y mi sangre es verdadera bebida. 56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre permanece en mí y yo en él. 57 Así como me envió el Padre viviente, y yo vivo por el Padre, también el que come de mí vivirá por mí. 58 Este es el pan que bajó del cielo. Los antepasados de ustedes comieron maná y murieron, pero el que come de este pan vivirá para siempre.
59 Todo esto lo dijo Jesús mientras enseñaba en la sinagoga de Capernaúm.
Muchos discípulos abandonan a Jesús
60 Al escucharlo, muchos de sus discípulos exclamaron: «Esta enseñanza es muy difícil; ¿quién puede aceptarla?».
61 Jesús, muy consciente de que sus discípulos murmuraban por lo que había dicho, les reprochó:
—¿Esto les causa tropiezo? 62 ¿Qué tal si vieran al Hijo del hombre subir adonde antes estaba? 63 El Espíritu da vida; la carne no vale para nada. Las palabras que les he hablado son espíritu y son vida. 64 Sin embargo, hay algunos de ustedes que no creen.
Es que Jesús conocía desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían y quién era el que iba a traicionarlo. Así que añadió:
65 —Por esto les dije que nadie puede venir a mí, a menos que se lo haya concedido el Padre.
66 Desde entonces muchos de sus discípulos le volvieron la espalda y ya no andaban con él. 67 Así que Jesús preguntó a los doce:
—¿También ustedes quieren marcharse?
68 —Señor —contestó Simón Pedro—, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. 69 Y nosotros hemos creído, y sabemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios.[e]
70 —¿No los he escogido yo a ustedes doce? —respondió Jesús—. No obstante, uno de ustedes es un diablo.
71 Se refería a Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, uno de los doce, quien lo iba a traicionar.

6 Después de esto, Jesús se fue al otro lado del Lago de Galilea, que es el mismo Lago de Tiberias. 2 Mucha gente lo seguía, porque habían visto las señales milagrosas que hacía sanando a los enfermos. 3 Entonces Jesús subió a un monte, y se sentó con sus discípulos. 4 Ya estaba cerca la Pascua, la fiesta de los judíos. 5 Cuando Jesús miró y vio la mucha gente que lo seguía, le dijo a Felipe:
—¿Dónde vamos a comprar pan para toda esta gente?
6 Pero lo dijo por ver qué contestaría Felipe, porque Jesús mismo sabía bien lo que había de hacer. 7 Felipe le respondió:
—Ni siquiera el salario de doscientos días bastaría para comprar el pan suficiente para que cada uno recibiera un poco.
8 Entonces Andrés, que era otro de sus discípulos y hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo:
9 —Aquí hay un niño que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados; pero, ¿qué es esto para tanta gente?
10 Jesús respondió:
—Díganles a todos que se sienten.
Había mucha hierba en aquel lugar, y se sentaron. Eran unos cinco mil hombres. 11 Jesús tomó en sus manos los panes y, después de dar gracias a Dios, los repartió entre los que estaban sentados. Hizo lo mismo con los pescados, dándoles todo lo que querían. 12 Cuando ya estuvieron satisfechos, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:
—Recojan los pedazos sobrantes, para que no se desperdicie nada.
13 Ellos los recogieron, y llenaron doce canastas con los pedazos que sobraron de los cinco panes de cebada. 14 La gente, al ver esta señal milagrosa hecha por Jesús, decía:
—De veras éste es el profeta que había de venir al mundo.
15 Pero como Jesús se dio cuenta de que querían llevárselo a la fuerza para hacerlo rey, se retiró otra vez a lo alto del cerro, para estar solo.
Jesús camina sobre el agua(B)
16 Al llegar la noche, los discípulos de Jesús bajaron al lago, 17 subieron a una barca y comenzaron a cruzar el lago para llegar a Cafarnaúm. Ya estaba completamente oscuro, y Jesús no había regresado todavía. 18 En esto, el lago se alborotó a causa de un fuerte viento que se había levantado. 19 Cuando ya habían avanzado unos cinco o seis kilómetros, vieron a Jesús, que se acercaba a la barca caminando sobre el agua, y tuvieron miedo. 20 Él les dijo:
—¡Soy yo, no tengan miedo!
21 Con gusto lo recibieron en la barca, y en un momento llegaron a la tierra adonde iban.
La gente busca a Jesús
22 Al día siguiente, la gente que estaba al otro lado del lago se dio cuenta de que los discípulos se habían ido en la única barca que allí había, y que Jesús no iba con ellos. 23 Mientras tanto, otras barcas llegaron de la ciudad de Tiberias a un lugar cerca de donde habían comido el pan después que el Señor dio gracias. 24 Así que, al ver que ni Jesús ni sus discípulos estaban allí, la gente subió también a las barcas y se dirigió a Cafarnaúm, a buscarlo.
Jesús, el pan de la vida
25 Al llegar ellos al otro lado del lago, encontraron a Jesús y le preguntaron:
—Maestro, ¿cuándo viniste acá?
26 Jesús les dijo:
—Les aseguro que ustedes me buscan porque comieron hasta llenarse, y no porque hayan entendido las señales milagrosas. 27 No trabajen por la comida que se acaba, sino por la comida que permanece y que les da vida eterna. Ésta es la comida que les dará el Hijo del hombre, porque Dios, el Padre, ha puesto su sello en él.
28 Le preguntaron:
—¿Qué debemos hacer para realizar las obras que Dios quiere que hagamos?
29 Jesús les contestó:
—La única obra que Dios quiere es que crean en aquel que él ha enviado.
30 Le preguntaron entonces:
—¿Qué señal puedes darnos, para que al verla te creamos? ¿Cuáles son tus obras? 31 Nuestros antepasados comieron el maná en el desierto, como dice la Escritura: “Les dio a comer pan del cielo.”
32 Jesús les contestó:
—Les aseguro que no fue Moisés quien les dio a ustedes el pan del cielo, sino que mi Padre es quien les da el verdadero pan del cielo. 33 Porque el pan que Dios da es el que ha bajado del cielo y da vida al mundo.
34 Ellos le pidieron:
—Señor, danos siempre ese pan.
35 Y Jesús les dijo:
—Yo soy el pan que da vida. El que viene a mí, nunca tendrá hambre; y el que cree en mí, nunca tendrá sed. 36 Pero como ya les dije, ustedes no creen aunque me han visto. 37 Todos los que el Padre me da, vienen a mí; y a los que vienen a mí, no los echaré fuera. 38 Porque yo no he bajado del cielo para hacer mi propia voluntad, sino para hacer la voluntad de mi Padre, que me ha enviado. 39 Y la voluntad del que me ha enviado es que yo no pierda a ninguno de los que me ha dado, sino que los resucite en el día último. 40 Porque la voluntad de mi Padre es que todos los que miran al Hijo de Dios y creen en él, tengan vida eterna; y yo los resucitaré en el día último.
41 Por esto los judíos comenzaron a murmurar de Jesús, porque afirmó: «Yo soy el pan que ha bajado del cielo.» 42 Y dijeron:
—¿No es este Jesús, el hijo de José? Nosotros conocemos a su padre y a su madre. ¿Cómo dice ahora que ha bajado del cielo?
43 Jesús les dijo entonces:
—Dejen de murmurar. 44 Nadie puede venir a mí, si no lo trae el Padre, que me ha enviado; y yo lo resucitaré en el día último. 45 En los libros de los profetas se dice: “Dios instruirá a todos.” Así que todos los que escuchan al Padre y aprenden de él, vienen a mí.
46 «No es que alguno haya visto al Padre; el único que lo ha visto es el que procede de Dios. 47 Les aseguro que quien cree, tiene vida eterna. 48 Yo soy el pan que da vida. 49 Los antepasados de ustedes comieron el maná en el desierto, y a pesar de ello murieron; 50 pero yo hablo del pan que baja del cielo; quien come de él, no muere. 51 Yo soy ese pan vivo que ha bajado del cielo; el que come de este pan, vivirá para siempre. El pan que yo daré es mi propia carne. Lo daré por la vida del mundo.»
52 Los judíos se pusieron a discutir unos con otros:
—¿Cómo puede éste darnos a comer su propia carne?
53 Jesús les dijo:
—Les aseguro que si ustedes no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre y beben su sangre, no tendrán vida. 54 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna; y yo lo resucitaré en el día último. 55 Porque mi carne es verdadera comida, y mi sangre es verdadera bebida. 56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, vive unido a mí, y yo vivo unido a él. 57 El Padre, que me ha enviado, tiene vida, y yo vivo por él; de la misma manera, el que se alimenta de mí, vivirá por mí. 58 Hablo del pan que ha bajado del cielo. Este pan no es como el maná que comieron los antepasados de ustedes, que a pesar de haberlo comido murieron; el que come de este pan, vivirá para siempre.
59 Jesús enseñó estas cosas en la sinagoga en Cafarnaúm.
Palabras de vida eterna
60 Al oír estas enseñanzas, muchos de los que seguían a Jesús dijeron:
—Esto que dice es muy difícil de aceptar; ¿quién puede hacerle caso?
61 Jesús, dándose cuenta de lo que estaban murmurando, les preguntó:
—¿Esto les ofende? 62 ¿Qué pasaría entonces, si vieran al Hijo del hombre subir a donde antes estaba? 63 El espíritu es el que da vida; lo carnal no sirve para nada. Y las cosas que yo les he dicho son espíritu y vida. 64 Pero todavía hay algunos de ustedes que no creen.
Es que Jesús sabía desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían, y quién era el que lo iba a traicionar. 65 Y añadió:
—Por esto les he dicho que nadie puede venir a mí, si el Padre no se lo concede.
66 Desde entonces, muchos de los que habían seguido a Jesús lo dejaron, y ya no andaban con él. 67 Jesús les preguntó a los doce discípulos:
—¿También ustedes quieren irse?
68 Simón Pedro le contestó:
—Señor, ¿a quién podemos ir? Tus palabras son palabras de vida eterna. 69 Nosotros ya hemos creído, y sabemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios.
70 Jesús les contestó:
—¿No los he escogido yo a ustedes doce? Sin embargo, uno de ustedes es un diablo.
71 Al decir esto, Jesús hablaba de Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, porque Judas iba a traicionarlo, aunque era uno de los doce discípulos.

6 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.
2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.
3 And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.
4 And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.
5 When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
6 And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.
7 Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him,
9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.
14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.
16 And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,
17 And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.
18 And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
19 So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.
20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.
22 The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;
23 (Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)
24 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.
25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?
26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
36 But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
41 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.
42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
48 I am that bread of life.
49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
59 These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?
62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.
65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
70 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?
71 He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(A)
6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(B) he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(C) and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival(D) was near.
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(E) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(F) spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(G)
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(H) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14 After the people saw the sign(I) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(J) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(K) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(L)
Jesus Walks on the Water(M)
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[b] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(N) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(O) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(P) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(Q) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(R) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(S) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(T) when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(U) not because you saw the signs(V) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(W) to eternal life,(X) which the Son of Man(Y) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(Z) of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(AA) in the one he has sent.”(AB)
30 So they asked him, “What sign(AC) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(AD) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(AE) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]”(AF)
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(AG) and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(AH)
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(AI) the bread of life.(AJ) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(AK) in me will never be thirsty.(AL) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(AM) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven(AN) not to do my will but to do the will(AO) of him who sent me.(AP) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(AQ) but raise them up at the last day.(AR) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(AS) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(AT) and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(AU) whose father and mother we know?(AV) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(AW)
43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(AX) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[d](AY) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(AZ) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(BA) 48 I am the bread of life.(BB) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(BC) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(BD) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(BE) that came down from heaven.(BF) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(BG)
52 Then the Jews(BH) began to argue sharply among themselves,(BI) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(BJ) of the Son of Man(BK) and drink his blood,(BL) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(BM) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(BN) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(BO) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(BP) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(BQ) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(BR)
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(BS) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(BT) ascend to where he was before!(BU) 63 The Spirit gives life;(BV) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(BW) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(BX) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(BY)
66 From this time many of his disciples(BZ) turned back and no longer followed him.
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(CA)
68 Simon Peter answered him,(CB) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(CC) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(CD)
70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,(CE) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”(CF) 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,(CG) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)(CH)
