給五千人吃飽的神蹟(A)
6 這些事以後，耶穌渡過加利利海，就是提比里亞海。 2 有一大群人，因為看見了他在病人身上所行的神蹟，就跟隨了他。 3 耶穌上了山，同門徒坐在那裡。 4 那時猶太人的逾越節近了。 5 耶穌舉目觀看，見一大群人向他走過來，就對腓力說：“我們從哪裡買餅給這些人吃呢？” 6 他說這話，是要試驗腓力，因他自己早已知道要怎樣作。 7 腓力回答：“就算二百銀幣買的餅，每人分一點，也是不夠的。” 8 有一個門徒，就是西門．彼得的弟弟安得烈，對耶穌說： 9 “這裡有個小孩子，帶著五個大麥餅、兩條魚；只是分給這麼多人，有甚麼用呢？” 10 耶穌吩咐他們：“你們叫眾人坐下。”原來那地方的草很多，眾人就坐下，單是男人的數目約有五千。 11 耶穌拿起餅來，祝謝了，就分給坐著的人；分魚也是這樣，都是隨著他們所要的。 12 他們吃飽了之後，耶穌對門徒說：“把剩下的零碎收拾起來，免得浪費。” 13 門徒就把眾人吃剩那五個大麥餅的零碎收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。 14 眾人看見耶穌所行的神蹟，就說：“這真是那要到世上來的先知。” 15 耶穌知道群眾要來強迫他作王，就獨自又退到山上去了。
耶穌在海面上行走(B)
16 到了晚上，他的門徒下到海邊去。 17 他們上了船，要渡海往迦百農去。那時天已經黑了，耶穌還沒有到他們那裡。 18 忽然海上起了狂風，波浪翻騰。 19 門徒搖櫓約行了五六公里，看見耶穌在海面上行走，漸漸靠近船，就害怕起來。 20 耶穌對他們說：“是我，不要怕。” 21 他們這才把他接上船，船就立刻到了他們要去的地方。
耶穌是生命的食物
22 第二天，站在海那邊的群眾，看見只有一隻小船留在那裡，並且知道耶穌沒有和他的門徒一同上船，門徒是自己去的； 23 不過有幾隻從提比里亞來的船停在那裡，靠近他們在主祝謝以後吃餅的地方。 24 群眾見耶穌和門徒都不在那裡，就上船往迦百農去找耶穌。 25 他們在對岸找到了耶穌，就問他：“拉比，你幾時到這裡來的？” 26 耶穌回答：“我實實在在告訴你們，你們找我，不是因為看見了神蹟，而是因為吃了餅又吃飽了。 27 不要為那必朽壞的食物操勞，卻要為那存到永生的食物操勞，就是人子所要賜給你們的，因為人子是父 神所印證的。” 28 眾人又問他：“我們應該作甚麼，才算是作 神的工作呢？” 29 耶穌回答：“信 神所差來的，就是作 神的工了。” 30 於是他們就說：“你要行甚麼神蹟，讓我們看了就信你呢？你到底能作甚麼呢？ 31 我們的祖宗在曠野吃過嗎哪，正如經上所記：‘他把從天上來的食物賜給他們吃。’” 32 耶穌對他們說：“我實實在在告訴你們，不是摩西把那從天上來的食物賜給你們，而是我父把天上來的真食物賜給你們； 33 因為 神的食物就是從天上降下來，把生命賜給世人的那一位。”
34 他們對耶穌說：“主啊，求你常把這食物賜給我們。” 35 耶穌說：“我就是生命的食物，到我這裡來的，必定不餓；信我的，永遠不渴。 36 但我告訴你們，你們雖然見了我，還是不信。 37 凡是父賜給我的人，必到我這裡來；到我這裡來的，我決不丟棄他， 38 因為我從天上降下來，不是要行自己的意思，而是要行那差我來者的旨意。 39 那差我來者的旨意就是：他所賜給我的人，我連一個也不失落，並且在末日我要使他們復活。 40 因為我父的旨意，是要使所有看見了子而信的人有永生，並且在末日我要使他們復活。”
41 猶太人因為耶穌說“我是從天上降下來的食物”，就紛紛議論他。 42 他們說：“這不是約瑟的兒子耶穌嗎？他的父母我們不都認識嗎？他現在怎麼說‘我是從天上降下來的’呢？” 43 耶穌回答：“你們不要彼此議論。 44 如果不是差我來的父吸引人，就沒有人能到我這裡來；到我這裡來的，在末日我要使他復活。 45 先知書上記著：‘眾人都必受 神的教導。’凡聽見從父那裡來的教訓而又學習的，必到我這裡來。 46 這不是說有人見過父；只有從 神那裡來的那一位，他才見過父。 47 我實實在在告訴你們，信的人有永生。 48 我就是生命的食物， 49 你們的祖宗在曠野吃過嗎哪，還是死了。 50 這是從天上降下來的食物，使人吃了就不死。 51 我就是從天上降下來生命的食物，人若吃了這食物，就必活到永遠。我要賜的食物就是我的肉，是為了世人的生命而賜的。”
52 於是，猶太人彼此爭論，說：“這個人怎能把他的肉給我們吃呢？” 53 耶穌就對他們說：“我實實在在告訴你們，你們若不吃人子的肉，不喝人子的血，就沒有生命在你們裡面。 54 吃我肉、喝我血的，就有永生，在末日我要使他復活； 55 因為我的肉是真正的食物，我的血是真正的飲料。 56 吃我肉、喝我血的人，就住在我裡面，我也住在他裡面。 57 正如永活的父差遣了我，我也因父活著；照樣，吃我肉的人也必因我而活。 58 這就是從天上降下來的食物，不像嗎哪，你們的祖宗吃過，還是死了；吃這食物的，必活到永遠。” 59 這些話是耶穌在迦百農會堂裡教導人的時候說的。
永生之道
60 他的門徒中，有許多人聽了，就說：“這話很難，誰能接受呢？” 61 耶穌心裡知道門徒為了這事議論紛紛，就對他們說：“這話使你們動搖嗎？ 62 如果你們看見人子升到他原來所在的地方，又怎樣呢？ 63 使人活的是靈，肉體是無濟於事的。我對你們所說的話是靈、是生命。 64 然而你們中間卻有不信的人。”原來從起初耶穌就知道那些不信的是誰，那要把他出賣的又是誰。 65 耶穌跟著說：“所以我對你們說過，如果不是父所賜的，沒有人能到我這裡來。”
66 從此，他的門徒中有許多人退去了，不再與他同行。 67 於是耶穌對十二門徒說：“你們也想離去嗎？” 68 西門．彼得回答：“主啊，你有永生之道，我們還跟從誰呢？ 69 我們已經相信，並且知道你是 神的聖者。” 70 耶穌說：“我不是揀選了你們十二個人嗎？但你們中間有一個是魔鬼。” 71 耶穌這話是指著加略人西門的兒子猶大說的，因為他雖然是十二門徒之一，卻要出賣耶穌。

Gesù sfama cinquemila uomini
6 Dopo aver detto queste cose, Gesù attraversò il mare di Galilea, detto anche lago di Tiberiade. 2-5 Era prossima la Pasqua, festività ebraica. Una immensa folla lo seguiva ovunque per vederlo guarire i malati. Gesù salì sulla montagna e si sedette, attorniato dai discepoli. Ben presto sʼaccorse che moltissime persone stavano salendo da lui.
Rivolgendosi a Filippo, gli chiese: «Filippo, dove possiamo comprare del pane per sfamare tutta questa gente?» 6 (Gesù intendeva soltanto mettere alla prova Filippo, perché sapeva già che cosa avrebbe fatto).
7 Filippo rispose: «Ci vorrebbe un capitale soltanto per cominciare!»
8-9 Allora Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro intervenne: «Cʼè qui un ragazzo con cinque pani dʼorzo e due pesci. Ma a che servono con tutta questa gente?»
10 «Dite a tutti di sedersi», ordinò Gesù. E tutta la gente si sedette sullʼerba. (Cʼerano circa cinquemila persone). 11 Allora Gesù prese i pani, ringraziò Dio, poi cominciò a distribuirli alla folla. Lo stesso fece con i pesci. E tutti mangiarono a sazietà!
12 «Ora raccogliete gli avanzi», ordinò Gesù ai discepoli, «che niente vada sprecato!» 13 Così con gli avanzi riempirono dodici cesti.
14 La gente, rendendosi conto del grande miracolo, cominciò ad esclamare: «È proprio lui il profeta che stavamo aspettando!»
15 Ma quando Gesù sʼaccorse che erano pronti a prenderlo con la forza per farlo loro re, si allontanò da solo e salì più in alto, sui monti.
16 Quella sera, i discepoli scesero sulla spiaggia ad aspettarlo. 17 Ma, poiché la notte era già calata e Gesù non si vedeva ancora, salirono sulla barca e si diressero, attraverso il lago, in direzione di Cafarnao. 18-19 Ben presto si levò un gran vento e il lago era molto agitato. Avevano già remato per quattro o cinque chilometri quando, improvvisamente, videro Gesù che camminava sullʼacqua e si dirigeva verso la barca. I discepoli rimasero agghiacciati dal terrore, 20 ma Gesù li rassicurò: «Sono io, non abbiate paura!» 21 Allora lo fecero salire, e subito la barca si trovò a destinazione.
22-23 Il mattino seguente, la gente rimasta sullʼaltra riva del lago, cominciò a riunirsi sulla spiaggia (in attesa di vedere Gesù). Sapevano infatti che Gesù era giunto là insieme con i discepoli, ma poi i discepoli se nʼerano andati via da soli, lasciandolo a terra. Giunsero anche diversi battelli da Tiberiade, vicino al posto dove Gesù aveva moltiplicato il pane con un miracolo. 24 Così, quando tutte quelle persone videro che Gesù non cʼera, e neppure i suoi discepoli, salirono sulle barche e si diressero verso Cafarnao alla sua ricerca. 25 Giunti sullʼaltra sponda, lo trovarono e gli dissero: «Signore, quandʼè che sei venuto qui?» 26 Gesù rispose: «La verità è che voi mi cercate, perché vi ho sfamato, non perché credete in me. 27 Ma non dovete darvi tanto da fare per le cose che si guastano, come il cibo. Datevi da fare invece per cercare la vita eterna, che vi darò io, il Messia. Perché Dio Padre mi ha mandato proprio per questo scopo».
28 Allora gli chiesero: «Che cosa dobbiamo fare per piacere a Dio?»
29 Gesù disse loro: «Una sola cosa vuole Dio da voi: che crediate in colui che ha mandato».
30-31 Dissero ancora: «Se vuoi che crediamo che tu sei il Messia, devi mostrarci altri miracoli. Che cosa puoi fare tu? I nostri antenati, per esempio, hanno mangiato la manna, mentre erano nel deserto! Quello sì che fu un grande miracolo! Infatti le Scritture dicono: “Mosè diede loro il pane mandato dal cielo”».
32 Gesù precisò: «Non fu Mosè a dare il pane venuto dal cielo, ma mio Padre, lo stesso che ora vi offre il vero pane del cielo. 33 Il vero pane è una persona, colui che Dio ha mandato dal cielo per dare la vita al mondo».
34 «Signore», gli dissero allora, «dacci di questo pane!»
35 Gesù replicò: «Io sono il pane della vita. Chi viene a me, non avrà più fame. Chi crede in me, non avrà più sete. 36 Ma, come vi ho detto prima, il guaio vostro è che, pur avendomi conosciuto, non avete creduto! 37 Ma alcuni verranno da me, quelli che il Padre mi ha dato, ed io non li respingerò mai. 38 Infatti, sono venuto qui dal cielo per fare la volontà di Dio che mi ha mandato, non per seguire la mia strada. 39 E questa è la volontà di Dio Padre: che di tutti quelli che egli mi ha dato non ne perda neppure uno, ma che li risusciti nellʼultimo giorno. 40 Questa è la volontà di mio Padre: che chi conosce il Figlio e crede in lui abbia vita eterna. Ed io lo risusciterò nellʼultimo giorno».
41 Allora i Giudei cominciarono a borbottare: ce lʼavevano con Gesù, perché diceva di essere il pane mandato dal cielo. 42 E osservavano: «Ma costui non è quel Gesù, figlio di Giuseppe? Conosciamo bene suo padre e sua madre…»
43 Ma Gesù replicò: «Non brontolate fra voi per ciò che ho detto. 44 Nessuno può venire da me, se non lo attira il Padre che mi ha mandato. Ed io lo risusciterò nellʼultimo giorno. 45 Proprio come si legge nelle Scritture: “Saranno tutti istruiti da Dio”. Perciò, chi ascolta il Padre e da lui ha imparato la verità, viene a me con fede. 46 Questo però non significa che qualcuno abbia visto il Padre, perché soltanto io, il Figlio che viene da Dio, lʼho visto!
47 Questo vi assicuro: chi crede in me ha già vita eterna! 48-51 Proprio così, io sono il pane della vita. Quando i vostri antenati mangiarono la manna del deserto, morirono lo stesso tutti. Invece questo pane, mandato dal cielo, dà la vita eterna a chi lo mangia. Io sono questo pane vivo, venuto dal cielo. Chi mangia questo pane vivrà per sempre. Questo pane è il mio corpo, dato perché il mondo abbia la vita».
52 Allora i Giudei cominciarono a discutere tra loro sul significato di quelle parole. «Come può questʼuomo darci da mangiare il suo corpo?» si chiedevano.
53 Allora Gesù ripeté: «In tutta sincerità vi dico questo: se non mangerete il corpo del Cristo e non berrete il suo sangue, non avrete la vita eterna. 54 Chi invece mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue, ha vita eterna; ed io lo risusciterò nellʼultimo giorno. 55 Perché la mia carne è il vero cibo e il mio sangue la vera bevanda. 56 Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue resta unito a me, ed io a lui. 57 Io vivo per la potenza del Padre vivente, che mi ha mandato; allo stesso modo chi mangia me, vivrà grazie a me. 58 Io sono il vero pane venuto dal cielo, chi mangia questo pane, vivrà per sempre, non come i vostri antenati che mangiarono la manna, il pane del cielo, e poi morirono». 59 Gesù disse queste cose nella sinagoga di Cafarnao.
60 Perfino i discepoli commentarono: «Come parla difficile questa volta! Chi può mai capire il significato di queste cose?»
61 Gesù, naturalmente, sapeva che i discepoli si lamentavano, perciò disse loro: «Che cʼè di strano in quello che dico? 62 Che direte, allora, quando vedrete me, il Messia, ritornare in cielo? 63 Soltanto lo Spirito Santo dà la vita. Lʼuomo da solo non può far niente. Fate invece attenzione alle mie parole, perché vengono dallo Spirito di Dio e danno la vita. 64 Ma alcuni di voi non mi credono». (Infatti Gesù sapeva fin da principio chi erano quelli che non credevano e chi lʼavrebbe tradito).
65 Poi aggiunse: «Questo intendevo, quando dissi che nessuno può venire da me, se il Padre non glielo permette».
66 A questo punto molti dei discepoli non ne vollero più sapere di lui.
67 Gesù si rivolse ai dodici e chiese: «Ve ne andate anche voi?»
68 Allora Simon Pietro rispose: «Maestro, da chi ce ne andremo? Solo tu cʼinsegni come avere la vita eterna. 69 Noi ti abbiamo creduto e sappiamo che tu sei il Santo Figlio di Dio».
70 Gesù rispose: «Non sono, forse, stato io ad eleggere voi dodici? Eppure uno di voi è un diavolo!» 71 Parlava di Giuda, figlio di Simone Iscariota, uno dei dodici, quello che poi lo avrebbe tradito.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(A)
6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(B) he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(C) and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival(D) was near.
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(E) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(F) spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(G)
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(H) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14 After the people saw the sign(I) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(J) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(K) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(L)
Jesus Walks on the Water(M)
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[b] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(N) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(O) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(P) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(Q) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(R) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(S) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(T) when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(U) not because you saw the signs(V) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(W) to eternal life,(X) which the Son of Man(Y) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(Z) of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(AA) in the one he has sent.”(AB)
30 So they asked him, “What sign(AC) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(AD) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(AE) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]”(AF)
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(AG) and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(AH)
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(AI) the bread of life.(AJ) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(AK) in me will never be thirsty.(AL) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(AM) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven(AN) not to do my will but to do the will(AO) of him who sent me.(AP) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(AQ) but raise them up at the last day.(AR) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(AS) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(AT) and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(AU) whose father and mother we know?(AV) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(AW)
43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(AX) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[d](AY) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(AZ) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(BA) 48 I am the bread of life.(BB) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(BC) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(BD) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(BE) that came down from heaven.(BF) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(BG)
52 Then the Jews(BH) began to argue sharply among themselves,(BI) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(BJ) of the Son of Man(BK) and drink his blood,(BL) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(BM) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(BN) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(BO) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(BP) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(BQ) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(BR)
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(BS) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(BT) ascend to where he was before!(BU) 63 The Spirit gives life;(BV) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(BW) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(BX) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(BY)
66 From this time many of his disciples(BZ) turned back and no longer followed him.
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(CA)
68 Simon Peter answered him,(CB) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(CC) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(CD)
70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,(CE) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”(CF) 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,(CG) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)(CH)

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand(A)
6 After this, Jesus went across Lake Galilee (or, Lake Tiberias, as it is also called). 2 A large crowd followed him, because they had seen his miracles of healing the sick. 3 Jesus went up a hill and sat down with his disciples. 4 The time for the Passover Festival was near. 5 Jesus looked around and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, so he asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food to feed all these people?” (6 He said this to test Philip; actually he already knew what he would do.)
7 Philip answered, “For everyone to have even a little, it would take more than two hundred silver coins[a] to buy enough bread.”
8 Another one of his disciples, Andrew, who was Simon Peter's brother, said, 9 “There is a boy here who has five loaves of barley bread and two fish. But they will certainly not be enough for all these people.”
10 “Make the people sit down,” Jesus told them. (There was a lot of grass there.) So all the people sat down; there were about five thousand men. 11 Jesus took the bread, gave thanks to God, and distributed it to the people who were sitting there. He did the same with the fish, and they all had as much as they wanted. 12 When they were all full, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces left over; let us not waste a bit.” 13 So they gathered them all and filled twelve baskets with the pieces left over from the five barley loaves which the people had eaten.
14 Seeing this miracle that Jesus had performed, the people there said, “Surely this is the Prophet[b] who was to come into the world!” 15 Jesus knew that they were about to come and seize him in order to make him king by force; so he went off again to the hills by himself.
Jesus Walks on the Water(B)
16 When evening came, Jesus' disciples went down to the lake, 17 got into a boat, and went back across the lake toward Capernaum. Night came on, and Jesus still had not come to them. 18 By then a strong wind was blowing and stirring up the water. 19 The disciples had rowed about three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the water, coming near the boat, and they were terrified. 20 “Don't be afraid,” Jesus told them, “it is I!” 21 Then they willingly took him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached land at the place they were heading for.
The People Seek Jesus
22 Next day the crowd which had stayed on the other side of the lake realized that there had been only one boat there. They knew that Jesus had not gone in it with his disciples, but that they had left without him. 23 Other boats, which were from Tiberias, came to shore near the place where the crowd had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 When the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they got into those boats and went to Capernaum, looking for him.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When the people found Jesus on the other side of the lake, they said to him, “Teacher, when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “I am telling you the truth: you are looking for me because you ate the bread and had all you wanted, not because you understood my miracles. 27 (C)Do not work for food that spoils; instead, work for the food that lasts for eternal life. This is the food which the Son of Man will give you, because God, the Father, has put his mark of approval on him.”
28 So they asked him, “What can we do in order to do what God wants us to do?”
29 Jesus answered, “What God wants you to do is to believe in the one he sent.”
30 They replied, “What miracle will you perform so that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 (D)Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, just as the scripture says, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
32 “I am telling you the truth,” Jesus said. “What Moses gave you was not[c] the bread from heaven; it is my Father who gives you the real bread from heaven. 33 For the bread that God gives is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they asked him, “give us this bread always.”
35 “I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “Those who come to me will never be hungry; those who believe in me will never be thirsty. 36 Now, I told you that you have seen me but will not believe. 37 Everyone whom my Father gives me will come to me. I will never turn away anyone who comes to me, 38 because I have come down from heaven to do not my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And it is the will of him who sent me that I should not lose any of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them all to life on the last day. 40 For what my Father wants is that all who see the Son and believe in him should have eternal life. And I will raise them to life on the last day.”
41 The people started grumbling about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 So they said, “This man is Jesus son of Joseph, isn't he? We know his father and mother. How, then, does he now say he came down from heaven?”
43 Jesus answered, “Stop grumbling among yourselves. 44 People cannot come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me; and I will raise them to life on the last day. 45 (E)The prophets wrote, ‘Everyone will be taught by God.’ Anyone who hears the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46 This does not mean that anyone has seen the Father; he who is from God is the only one who has seen the Father. 47 I am telling you the truth: he who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate manna in the desert, but they died. 50 But the bread that comes down from heaven is of such a kind that whoever eats it will not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If you eat this bread, you will live forever. The bread that I will give you is my flesh, which I give so that the world may live.”
52 This started an angry argument among them. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they asked.
53 Jesus said to them, “I am telling you the truth: if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in yourselves. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them to life on the last day. 55 For my flesh is the real food; my blood is the real drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood live in me, and I live in them. 57 The living Father sent me, and because of him I live also. In the same way whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This, then, is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the bread that your ancestors ate, but then later died. Those who eat this bread will live forever.”
59 Jesus said this as he taught in the synagogue in Capernaum.
The Words of Eternal Life
60 Many of his followers heard this and said, “This teaching is too hard. Who can listen to it?”
61 Without being told, Jesus knew that they were grumbling about this, so he said to them, “Does this make you want to give up? 62 Suppose, then, that you should see the Son of Man go back up to the place where he was before? 63 (F)What gives life is God's Spirit; human power is of no use at all. The words I have spoken to you bring God's life-giving Spirit. 64 Yet some of you do not believe.” (Jesus knew from the very beginning who were the ones that would not believe and which one would betray him.) 65 And he added, “This is the very reason I told you that no people can come to me unless the Father makes it possible for them to do so.”
66 Because of this, many of Jesus' followers turned back and would not go with him any more. 67 So he asked the twelve disciples, “And you—would you also like to leave?”
68 (G)Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life. 69 And now we believe and know that you are the Holy One who has come from God.”
70 Jesus replied, “I chose the twelve of you, didn't I? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71 He was talking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. For Judas, even though he was one of the twelve disciples, was going to betray him.
