耶穌使五千人吃飽
6 事後，耶穌渡過加利利湖，就是提比哩亞海。 2 許多人因為見過耶穌治病的神蹟，就跟隨了祂。 3 耶穌到了山上，與門徒一起坐下來。 4 那時，猶太人的逾越節快到了。 5 耶穌舉目看見一大群人向祂走來，就對腓力說：「我們到哪裡去買餅給他們吃呢？」 6 祂這樣說是想試試腓力，其實祂知道應該怎麼做。
7 腓力回答說：「就算買二百個銀幣[a]的餅，也不夠他們每人一口啊！」
8 另外一個門徒——西門·彼得的弟弟安得烈對耶穌說： 9 「這裡有個小孩子帶了五個大麥餅和兩條魚。不過，這麼多人，這一點東西實在無濟於事。」
10 耶穌說：「你們叫大家坐下。」那地方草很多，眾人便坐下來，當時在場的男人大約有五千。 11 耶穌拿起餅來祝謝後，分給坐著的眾人，然後又照樣分魚，眾人可以隨意吃。 12 他們吃飽後，耶穌對門徒說：「把剩下的零碎收拾起來，免得浪費。」
13 他們便把大家吃剩的那五個大麥餅的零碎收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。 14 大家看見耶穌行的這個神蹟，都說：「這人真是那位要來到世上的先知！」 15 耶穌知道他們想強行立祂作王，便獨自退到山上。
耶穌在湖面上行走
16 傍晚的時候，門徒來到湖邊， 17 上了船，去湖對岸的迦百農。天色已暗，耶穌還沒到他們那裡。 18 忽然，湖面上狂風大作，波濤洶湧。 19 門徒搖櫓，大約行了五六公里，突然看見耶穌在水面上朝他們的船走來，他們很害怕。 20 耶穌對他們說：「是我，不要怕。」 21 於是門徒欣然接祂上船，船立刻到了目的地。
生命之糧
22 第二天，留在對岸的眾人看見那裡只有一條船，耶穌沒有和門徒一起坐船離開。 23 後來有幾條從提比哩亞來的小船停泊在岸邊，靠近主祝謝後讓眾人吃餅的地方。 24 他們發現耶穌和門徒都不在那裡，就乘船到迦百農去找祂。
25 他們在湖對岸找到了耶穌，對祂說：「老師，你什麼時候到這裡來的？」
26 耶穌回答說：「我實實在在地告訴你們，你們找我，並不是因為看見了神蹟，而是因為你們有餅吃，並且吃飽了。 27 不要為那必壞的食物勞苦，要為那存到永生的食物，就是人子要賜給你們的食物勞苦，因為父上帝把這權柄交給了人子。」
28 眾人問祂：「我們要怎樣做，才算是做上帝的工作呢？」
29 耶穌說：「信上帝所差來的那位，就是做上帝的工作。」
30 他們又問：「那麼，你行什麼神蹟讓我們看了可以信你呢？你要做什麼呢？ 31 我們的祖先在曠野有嗎哪吃，正如聖經上說，『祂賜下天糧給他們吃。』」
32 耶穌卻說：「我實實在在地告訴你們，不是摩西從天上賜給了你們糧食，而是我父將天上的真糧食賜給你們。 33 因為上帝賜的糧就是從天降下、賜生命給世人的那位。」
34 他們說：「先生，求你把這種糧食天天賜給我們吧。」
35 耶穌說：「我就是生命的糧，到我這裡來的人必定不餓，信我的人必永遠不渴。 36 但我對你們說過，你們雖然親眼看見我，仍然不信。 37 凡父賜給我的人，必到我這裡來。到我這裡來的，我總不丟棄他。 38 因為我從天上下來，不是要成就自己的旨意，而是要成就差我來者的旨意。 39 差我來者的旨意是，祂所賜給我的，我一個也不失掉，在末日我要叫他們復活。 40 因為我父的旨意是要叫一切看見兒子並相信的人得到永生，在末日，我要叫他們復活。」
41 猶太人聽見耶穌說自己是從天上降下來的糧，就小聲議論， 42 說：「這不是約瑟的兒子耶穌嗎？祂的父母，我們都認識，祂現在怎麼能說自己是從天上降下來的呢？」
43 耶穌回答他們說：「你們不用議論紛紛。 44 如果不是差我來的父吸引人到我這裡來，沒有人能來。到我這裡來的，在末日，我要叫他復活。 45 先知書上這樣說，『他們都要受上帝的訓誨』，這裡是指凡聽從父的教導又去效法的人，都會到我這裡來。 46 這並不是說有人見過父，唯獨從上帝而來的那位見過父。 47 我實實在在地告訴你們，信我的人有永生， 48 因為我是生命的糧。 49 你們的祖先在曠野吃過嗎哪，還是死了。 50 但這是從天上降下來的糧，人吃了就不死。 51 我就是天上降下來的生命之糧，人吃了這糧，必永遠活著。我將要賜下的糧就是我的肉，是為了讓世人得到生命。」
52 猶太人開始彼此爭論，說：「這個人怎麼能把自己的肉給我們吃呢？」
53 耶穌說：「我實實在在地告訴你們，如果你們不吃人子的肉，不喝人子的血，就沒有生命。 54 吃我肉、喝我血的人有永生，在末日，我要叫他復活。 55 因為我的肉是真糧食，我的血是真飲品， 56 吃我肉、喝我血的人常在我裡面，我也常在他裡面。 57 永活的父差我來，我是靠祂而活。同樣，吃我肉的人也靠我而活。 58 我是從天上降下來的真糧，吃這糧的人必永遠活著，不像你們的祖先，雖然吃過嗎哪，最後還是死了。」
59 這番話是耶穌在迦百農會堂裡教導人的時候講的。
永生之道
60 祂的許多門徒聽了，就議論說：「這話實在難懂，誰能接受呢？」
61 耶穌知道門徒在議論，就說：「這話叫你們失去信心嗎？ 62 如果你們看見人子升到祂原來所在的地方，會怎麼樣呢？ 63 叫人活著的是靈，肉體毫無作用。我對你們說的話就是靈，就是生命。 64 然而，你們中間有些人不信。」因為耶穌一開始就知道誰不信祂、誰會出賣祂。
65 祂繼續說：「所以我曾對你們說，如果不是我父賜恩，沒有人能到我這裡來。」
66 從此，很多門徒離開了，不再跟從耶穌。
67 於是耶穌問那十二個門徒：「你們也要離開我嗎？」
68 西門·彼得答道：「主啊！你有永生之道，我們還跟從誰呢？ 69 我們已經相信並且知道你是上帝的聖者。」
70 耶穌說：「我不是揀選了你們十二個人嗎？但其中有一個是魔鬼。」 71 耶穌這話是指著加略人西門的兒子猶大說的，因為他是十二個門徒之一，後來出賣了耶穌。

6 Depois disso, partiu Jesus para o outro lado do mar da Galileia, que é o de Tiberíades. 2 E grande multidão o seguia, porque via os sinais que operava sobre os enfermos. 3 E Jesus subiu ao monte e assentou-se ali com os seus discípulos. 4 E a Páscoa, a festa dos judeus, estava próxima. 5 Então, Jesus, levantando os olhos e vendo que uma grande multidão vinha ter com ele, disse a Filipe: Onde compraremos pão, para estes comerem? 6 Mas dizia isso para o experimentar; porque ele bem sabia o que havia de fazer. 7 Filipe respondeu-lhe: Duzentos dinheiros de pão não lhes bastarão, para que cada um deles tome um pouco. 8 E um dos seus discípulos, André, irmão de Simão Pedro, disse-lhe: 9 Está aqui um rapaz que tem cinco pães de cevada e dois peixinhos; mas que é isso para tantos? 10 E disse Jesus: Mandai assentar os homens. E havia muita relva naquele lugar. 16 E, quando veio a tarde, os seus discípulos desceram para o mar. 17 E, entrando no barco, passaram o mar em direção a Cafarnaum; e era já escuro, e ainda Jesus não tinha chegado perto deles. 18 E o mar se levantou, porque um grande vento assoprava. 19 E, tendo navegado uns vinte e cinco ou trinta estádios, viram Jesus andando sobre o mar e aproximando-se do barco, e temeram. 20 Porém ele lhes disse: Sou eu; não temais. 21 Então, eles, de boa mente, o receberam no barco; e logo o barco chegou à terra para onde iam.
Jesus é o pão da vida para os que creem
22 No dia seguinte, a multidão que estava do outro lado do mar, vendo que não havia ali mais do que um barquinho e que Jesus não entrara com seus discípulos naquele barquinho, mas que os seus discípulos tinham ido sós 23 (contudo, outros barquinhos tinham chegado de Tiberíades, perto do lugar onde comeram o pão, havendo o Senhor dado graças); 24 vendo, pois, a multidão que Jesus não estava ali, nem os seus discípulos, entraram eles também nos barcos e foram a Cafarnaum, em busca de Jesus. 25 E, achando-o no outro lado do mar, disseram-lhe: Rabi, quando chegaste aqui? 26 Jesus respondeu e disse-lhes: Na verdade, na verdade vos digo que me buscais não pelos sinais que vistes, mas porque comestes do pão e vos saciastes. 27 Trabalhai não pela comida que perece, mas pela comida que permanece para a vida eterna, a qual o Filho do Homem vos dará, porque a este o Pai, Deus, o selou. 28 Disseram-lhe, pois: Que faremos para executarmos as obras de Deus? 29 Jesus respondeu e disse-lhes: A obra de Deus é esta: que creiais naquele que ele enviou. 30 Disseram-lhe, pois: Que sinal, pois, fazes tu, para que o vejamos, e creiamos em ti? Que operas tu? 31 Nossos pais comeram o maná no deserto, como está escrito: Deu-lhes a comer o pão do céu. 32 Disse-lhes, pois, Jesus: Na verdade, na verdade vos digo que Moisés não vos deu o pão do céu, mas meu Pai vos dá o verdadeiro pão do céu. 33 Porque o pão de Deus é aquele que desce do céu e dá vida ao mundo. 34 Disseram-lhe, pois: Senhor, dá-nos sempre desse pão. 35 E Jesus lhes disse: Eu sou o pão da vida; aquele que vem a mim não terá fome; e quem crê em mim nunca terá sede. 36 Mas já vos disse que também vós me vistes e, contudo, não credes. 37 Tudo o que o Pai me dá virá a mim; e o que vem a mim de maneira nenhuma o lançarei fora. 38 Porque eu desci do céu não para fazer a minha vontade, mas a vontade daquele que me enviou. 39 E a vontade do Pai, que me enviou, é esta: que nenhum de todos aqueles que me deu se perca, mas que o ressuscite no último Dia. 40 Porquanto a vontade daquele que me enviou é esta: que todo aquele que vê o Filho e crê nele tenha a vida eterna; e eu o ressuscitarei no último Dia.
41 Murmuravam, pois, dele os judeus, porque dissera: Eu sou o pão que desceu do céu. 42 E diziam: Não é este Jesus, o filho de José, cujo pai e mãe nós conhecemos? Como, pois, diz ele: Desci do céu? 43 Respondeu, pois, Jesus e disse-lhes: Não murmureis entre vós. 44 Ninguém pode vir a mim, se o Pai, que me enviou, o não trouxer; e eu o ressuscitarei no último Dia. 45 Está escrito nos profetas: E serão todos ensinados por Deus. 52 Disputavam, pois, os judeus entre si, dizendo: Como nos pode dar este a sua carne a comer? 53 Jesus, pois, lhes disse: Na verdade, na verdade vos digo que, se não comerdes a carne do Filho do Homem e não beberdes o seu sangue, não tereis vida em vós mesmos. 54 Quem come a minha carne e bebe o meu sangue tem a vida eterna, e eu o ressuscitarei no último Dia. 55 Porque a minha carne verdadeiramente é comida, e o meu sangue verdadeiramente é bebida. 56 Quem come a minha carne e bebe o meu sangue permanece em mim, e eu, nele. 57 Assim como o Pai, que vive, me enviou, e eu vivo pelo Pai, assim quem de mim se alimenta também viverá por mim. 58 Este é o pão que desceu do céu; não é o caso de vossos pais, que comeram o maná e morreram; quem comer este pão viverá para sempre. 59 Ele disse essas coisas na sinagoga, ensinando em Cafarnaum.

More than Five Thousand Fed(A)
6 After this, Jesus went ·across [to the other side of] ·Lake [T the Sea of] Galilee (or, Lake Tiberias). 2 Many people followed him because they saw the ·miracles [L signs; 2:11] he did ·to heal [L for; on behalf of] the sick. 3 Jesus went up on a ·hill [or mountain] and sat down there with his ·followers [disciples]. 4 It was almost the time for the Jewish Passover Feast [C the annual festival that celebrates God’s rescue of Israel from Egypt; Ex. 12; John 2:13].
5 When Jesus ·looked up [L raised his eyes] and saw a large crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip [C one of the twelve disciples; 1:43], “Where can we buy enough bread for all these people to eat?” 6 (Jesus asked Philip this question to test him, because Jesus already knew what he ·planned [was going] to do.)
7 Philip answered [L him], “·Someone would have to work almost a year to buy enough bread [L Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not enough; C a denarius was a unit of money worth about a day’s wages] for each person to have only a little piece.”
8 Another one of his ·followers [disciples], Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “Here is a boy with five loaves of barley bread and two little fish, but ·that is not enough [L what are these…?] for so many people.”
10 Jesus said, “·Tell [L Make] the people to sit down.” There was plenty of grass there, and about five thousand men sat down there. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves of bread, ·thanked God [L gave thanks] for them, and ·gave [distributed] them to the people who were sitting there. He did the same with the fish, giving as much as the people wanted.
12 When they ·had all had enough to eat [L were filled/satisfied], Jesus said to his ·followers [disciples], “Gather the leftover ·pieces of fish and bread [L pieces] so that nothing is wasted.” 13 So they gathered up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with the pieces left from the five barley loaves [2 Kin. 4:42–44; C Jesus’ miracle surpasses that of Elisha].
14 When the people saw this ·miracle [L sign] that Jesus did, they said, “He must truly be the Prophet [1:21; C probably the “prophet like Moses” of Deut. 18:15–18] who is coming into the world.”
15 Jesus knew that the people ·planned [intended; were about] to come and take him by force and make him their king, so he ·left [withdrew] and went into the ·hills [or mountains] alone.
Jesus Walks on the Water(B)
16 That evening Jesus’ ·followers [disciples] went down to ·Lake Galilee [L the lake/sea]. 17 It was dark now, and Jesus had not yet ·come to [joined] them. The ·followers [disciples] got into a boat and started across the lake to Capernaum. 18 By now a strong wind was blowing, and ·the waves on the lake were getting bigger [L the sea/lake rose up]. 19 When they had rowed the boat about ·three or four miles [L twenty-five or thirty stadia; C a stadion was about 600 feet], they saw Jesus walking on the ·water [sea; lake], coming toward the boat. The ·followers [disciples] were afraid, 20 but Jesus said to them, “It is I [or “I am”; C there could be an echo here of Ex. 3:14]. Do not be afraid.” 21 Then they ·were glad [or were willing] to take him into the boat. ·At once [Immediately] the boat came to land at the place where they wanted to go. [C The sea often stands for chaos, and God controls it.]
The People Seek Jesus
22 The next day the ·people [L crowd] who had stayed on the ·other [opposite] side of the ·lake [sea] knew that Jesus had not gone in the boat with his ·followers [disciples] but that they had left ·without him [L alone]. And they ·knew [L saw] that only one boat had been there. 23 But then some boats came from Tiberias [C a major city on the western shore of Lake Galilee] and landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 When the ·people [L crowd] saw that Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] were not there now, they got into boats and went to Capernaum to find Jesus.
Jesus, the Bread of Life
25 When ·the people [L they] found Jesus on the ·other [opposite] side of the ·lake [sea], they asked him, “·Teacher [L Rabbi], when did you come here?”
26 Jesus answered, “·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], you aren’t looking for me because you saw ·me do miracles [L signs]. You are looking for me because you ate the bread and were ·satisfied [filled]. 27 Don’t work for the food that ·spoils [perishes]. Work for the food that ·stays good always and gives eternal life [L endures/remains/abides for eternal life]. The Son of Man [C a title for the Messiah; Dan. 7:13–14] will give you this food, because on him God the Father has ·put his power [L set his seal; C a seal impression signifies ownership and authority; 3:33].”
28 The people asked Jesus, “What ·are the things God wants us to do [L should we do to work the works of God]?”
29 Jesus answered, “·The work God wants you to do is this [L This is the work of God]: Believe the One he sent.”
30 So ·the people [L they] asked, “What ·miracle will you do? If we see a miracle, we will believe you [L sign will you do that we might see and believe you?]. What ·will you do [work will you perform]? 31 Our ·ancestors [forefathers; L fathers] ate the manna [C a flaky breadlike food that God provided the Israelites in the wilderness; Ex. 16:13–36] in the ·desert [wilderness]. ·This is written in the Scriptures [L As it is written]: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat [compare Ex. 16:4; Neh. 9:15; Ps. 78:24].’
32 [L Therefore; So; Then] Jesus said to them, “·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven; it is my Father who is giving you the true bread from heaven. 33 [L For] God’s bread is the One who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 [L Therefore] ·the people [L they] said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”
35 Then Jesus said to them, “I am the ·bread that gives life [T bread of life]. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you before, you have seen me and still don’t believe. 37 ·The Father gives me the people who are mine. Every one of them will come to me [L All/Everything the Father gives me will come to me], and I will ·always accept them [not reject them; L not cast them out]. 38 [L For] I came down from heaven to do ·what God wants me to do [L the will of him who sent me], not ·what I want to do [L my own will]. 39 Here is ·what the One who sent me wants me to do [L the will of him who sent me]: I must not lose even one whom God gave me, but I must raise them all on the last day. 40 Those who see the Son and believe in him have eternal life, and I will raise them on the last day. 41 ·Some people [The Jewish leaders; L The Jews] began to ·complain [grumble; murmur] about Jesus because he said, “I am the bread that comes down from heaven.” 42 They said, “·This is [L Is this not…?] Jesus, the son of Joseph. We know his father and mother. How can he [L now] say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
43 But Jesus ·answered [responded], “Stop ·complaining to each other [grumbling/murmuring among yourselves]. 44 The Father is the One who sent me. No one can come to me unless the Father draws him to me, and I will raise that person up on the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, ‘They will all be taught by God [Is. 54:13].’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46 ·No one has [or Not that anyone has] seen the Father except the One who is from God; only he has seen the Father. Otherwise, you won’t have ·real life [L life] in you. 54 Those who ·eat [feed on; C Jesus uses a different Greek word for “eat” in vv. 54–57 than in the previous verses; but the difference is probably stylistic] my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day. 55 [L For] My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who ·eat [feed on] my flesh and drink my blood ·live [remain; abide] in me, and I ·live [remain; abide] in them. 57 The living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father. The Words of Eternal Life
60 When the ·followers [disciples; C a broader circle of followers, not the twelve disciples] of Jesus heard this, many of them said, “This teaching [C that Jesus is the bread of life; 6:25–59] is ·hard [difficult; offensive]. Who can ·accept [obey; L hear] it?”
61 Knowing that his ·followers [disciples] were ·complaining [grumbling] about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this teaching ·bother [offend] you? 62 Then ·will it also bother you to [L what if you] see the Son of Man ·going back [L going up; ascending] to the place ·where he came from [L where he was before; C heaven]? 63 It is the Spirit that gives life. The flesh ·doesn’t give life [L is useless; counts for nothing]. The words I told you ·are spirit, and they give life [or are from the Spirit who gives life]. 64 But some of you don’t believe.” ([L For] Jesus knew from the beginning who did not believe and who would ·turn against [betray] him.) 65 Jesus said, “That is the reason I said, ·‘If the Father does not bring a person to me, that one cannot come.’ [L ‘No one can come to me unless the Father enables/grants him.’]”
66 After Jesus said this, many of his ·followers [disciples] ·left him [L turned back to previous things] and ·stopped following [L no longer walked with] him.
67 Jesus asked ·the twelve followers [the Twelve], “Do you want to leave, too?”
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord [or Master], who would we go to? You have the words that give eternal life. 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One from God.”
70 Then Jesus answered them, “·I chose [L Did I not choose…?] all twelve of you, but one of you is ·a devil [or the Devil; C Jesus equates the work of Judas with the work of Satan; compare Mark 8:33].”
71 Jesus was talking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Judas was one of the twelve, but later he was going to ·turn against [betray] Jesus.
