耶稣使五千人吃饱
6 事后,耶稣渡过加利利湖,就是提比哩亚海。 2 许多人因为见过耶稣治病的神迹,就跟随了祂。 3 耶稣到了山上,与门徒一起坐下来。 4 那时,犹太人的逾越节快到了。 5 耶稣举目看见一大群人向祂走来,就对腓力说:“我们到哪里去买饼给他们吃呢?” 6 祂这样说是想试试腓力,其实祂知道应该怎么做。
7 腓力回答说:“就算买二百个银币[a]的饼,也不够他们每人一口啊!”
8 另外一个门徒——西门·彼得的弟弟安得烈对耶稣说: 9 “这里有个小孩子带了五个大麦饼和两条鱼。不过,这么多人,这一点东西实在无济于事。”
10 耶稣说:“你们叫大家坐下。”那地方草很多,众人便坐下来,当时在场的男人大约有五千。 11 耶稣拿起饼来祝谢后,分给坐着的众人,然后又照样分鱼,众人可以随意吃。 12 他们吃饱后,耶稣对门徒说:“把剩下的零碎收拾起来,免得浪费。”
13 他们便把大家吃剩的那五个大麦饼的零碎收拾起来,装满了十二个篮子。 14 大家看见耶稣行的这个神迹,都说:“这人真是那位要来到世上的先知!” 15 耶稣知道他们想强行立祂做王,便独自退到山上。
耶稣在湖面上行走
16 傍晚的时候,门徒来到湖边, 17 上了船,去湖对岸的迦百农。天色已暗,耶稣还没到他们那里。 18 忽然,湖面上狂风大作,波涛汹涌。 19 门徒摇橹,大约行了五六公里,突然看见耶稣在水面上朝他们的船走来,他们很害怕。 20 耶稣对他们说:“是我,不要怕。” 21 于是门徒欢然接祂上船,船立刻到了目的地。
生命之粮
22 第二天,留在对岸的众人看见那里只有一条船,耶稣没有和门徒一起坐船离开。 23 后来有几条从提比哩亚来的小船停泊在岸边,靠近主祝谢后让众人吃饼的地方。 24 他们发现耶稣和门徒都不在那里,就乘船到迦百农去找祂。
25 他们在湖对岸找到了耶稣,对祂说:“老师,你什么时候到这里来的?”
26 耶稣回答说:“我实实在在地告诉你们,你们找我,并不是因为看见了神迹,而是因为你们有饼吃,并且吃饱了。 27 不要为那必坏的食物劳苦,要为那存到永生的食物,就是人子要赐给你们的食物劳苦,因为父上帝把这权柄交给了人子。”
28 众人问祂:“我们要怎样做,才算是做上帝的工作呢?”
29 耶稣说:“信上帝所差来的那位,就是做上帝的工作。”
30 他们又问:“那么,你行什么神迹让我们看了可以信你呢?你要做什么呢? 31 我们的祖先在旷野有吗哪吃,正如圣经上说,‘祂赐下天粮给他们吃。’”
32 耶稣却说:“我实实在在地告诉你们,不是摩西从天上赐给了你们粮食,而是我父将天上的真粮食赐给你们。 33 因为上帝赐的粮就是从天降下、赐生命给世人的那位。”
34 他们说:“先生,求你把这种粮食天天赐给我们吧。”
35 耶稣说:“我就是生命的粮,到我这里来的人必定不饿,信我的人必永远不渴。 36 但我对你们说过,你们虽然亲眼看见我,仍然不信。 37 凡父赐给我的人,必到我这里来。到我这里来的,我总不丢弃他。 38 因为我从天上下来,不是要成就自己的旨意,而是要成就差我来者的旨意。 39 差我来者的旨意是,祂所赐给我的,我一个也不失掉,在末日我要叫他们复活。 40 因为我父的旨意是要叫一切看见儿子并相信的人得到永生,在末日,我要叫他们复活。”
41 犹太人听见耶稣说自己是从天上降下来的粮,就小声议论, 42 说:“这不是约瑟的儿子耶稣吗?祂的父母,我们都认识,祂现在怎么能说自己是从天上降下来的呢?”
43 耶稣回答他们说:“你们不用议论纷纷。 44 如果不是差我来的父吸引人到我这里来,没有人能来。到我这里来的,在末日,我要叫他复活。 45 先知书上这样说,‘他们都要受上帝的训诲’,这里是指凡听从父的教导又去效法的人,都会到我这里来。 46 这并不是说有人见过父,唯独从上帝而来的那位见过父。 47 我实实在在地告诉你们,信我的人有永生, 48 因为我是生命的粮。 49 你们的祖先在旷野吃过吗哪,还是死了。 50 但这是从天上降下来的粮,人吃了就不死。 51 我就是天上降下来的生命之粮,人吃了这粮,必永远活着。我将要赐下的粮就是我的肉,是为了让世人得到生命。”
52 犹太人开始彼此争论,说:“这个人怎么能把自己的肉给我们吃呢?”
53 耶稣说:“我实实在在地告诉你们,如果你们不吃人子的肉,不喝人子的血,就没有生命。 54 吃我肉、喝我血的人有永生,在末日,我要叫他复活。 55 因为我的肉是真粮食,我的血是真饮品, 56 吃我肉、喝我血的人常在我里面,我也常在他里面。 57 永活的父差我来,我是靠祂而活。同样,吃我肉的人也靠我而活。 58 我是从天上降下来的真粮,吃这粮的人必永远活着,不像你们的祖先,虽然吃过吗哪,最后还是死了。”

永生之道
60 祂的许多门徒听了,就议论说:“这话实在难懂,谁能接受呢?”
61 耶稣知道门徒在议论,就说:“这话叫你们失去信心吗? 62 如果你们看见人子升到祂原来所在的地方,会怎么样呢? 63 叫人活着的是灵,肉体毫无作用。我对你们说的话就是灵,就是生命。 64 然而,你们中间有些人不信。”因为耶稣一开始就知道谁不信祂、谁会出卖祂。
65 祂继续说:“所以我曾对你们说,如果不是我父赐恩,没有人能到我这里来。”
66 从此,很多门徒离开了,不再跟从耶稣。
67 于是耶稣问那十二个门徒:“你们也要离开我吗?”
68 西门·彼得答道:“主啊!你有永生之道,我们还跟从谁呢? 69 我们已经相信并且知道你是上帝的圣者。”
70 耶稣说:“我不是拣选了你们十二个人吗?但其中有一个是魔鬼。” 71 耶稣这话是指着加略人西门的儿子犹大说的,因为他是十二个门徒之一,后来出卖了耶稣。

Feeding Five Thousand
(Matthew 14.13-21; Mark 6.30-44; Luke 9.10-17)
6 Jesus crossed Lake Galilee, which was also known as Lake Tiberias. 2 A large crowd had seen him work miracles to heal the sick, and those people went with him. 3-4 It was almost time for the Jewish festival of Passover, and Jesus went up on a mountain with his disciples and sat down.[a]
5 When Jesus saw the large crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, “Where will we get enough food to feed all these people?” 6 He said this to test Philip, since he already knew what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered, “Don't you know that it would take almost a year's wages[b] just to buy only a little bread for each of these people?”
8 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the disciples. He spoke up and said, 9 “There is a boy here who has five small loaves[c] of barley bread and two fish. But what good is that with all these people?”
10 The ground was covered with grass, and Jesus told his disciples to tell everyone to sit down. About 5,000 men were in the crowd. 11 Jesus took the bread in his hands and gave thanks to God. Then he passed the bread to the people, and he did the same with the fish, until everyone had plenty to eat.
12 The people ate all they wanted, and Jesus told his disciples to gather up the leftovers, so that nothing would be wasted. 13 The disciples gathered them up and filled twelve large baskets with what was left over from the five barley loaves.
14 After the people had seen Jesus work this miracle,[d] they began saying, “This must be the Prophet[e] who is to come into the world!” 15 Jesus realized that they would try to force him to be their king. So he went up on a mountain, where he could be alone.
Jesus Walks on the Water
(Matthew 14.22-27; Mark 6.45-52)
16 That evening, Jesus' disciples went down to the lake. 17 They got into a boat and started across for Capernaum. Later that evening Jesus had still not come to them, 18 and a strong wind was making the water rough.
19 When the disciples had rowed for five or six kilometers, they saw Jesus walking on the water. He kept coming closer to the boat, and they were terrified. 20 But he said, “I am Jesus![f] Don't be afraid!” 21 The disciples wanted to take him into the boat, but suddenly the boat reached the shore where they were headed.
The Bread That Gives Life
22 The people who had stayed on the east side of the lake knew that only one boat had been there. They also knew that Jesus had not left in it with his disciples. But the next day 23 some boats from Tiberias sailed near the place where the crowd had eaten the bread for which the Lord had given thanks. 24 They saw that Jesus and his disciples had left. Then they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus. 25 They found him on the west side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “I tell you for certain that you are not looking for me because you saw the miracles,[g] but because you ate all the food you wanted. 27 (A) Don't work for food that spoils. Work for food that gives eternal life. The Son of Man will give you this food, because God the Father has given him the right to do so.”
28 “What exactly does God want us to do?” the people asked.
29 Jesus answered, “God wants you to have faith in the one he sent.”
30 They replied, “What miracle will you work, so that we can have faith in you? What will you do? 31 (B) For example, when our ancestors were in the desert, they were given manna[h] to eat. It happened just as the Scriptures say, ‘God gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Jesus then told them, “I tell you for certain that Moses wasn't the one who gave you bread from heaven. My Father is the one who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 And the bread that God gives is the one who came down from heaven to give life to the world.”
34 The people said, “Sir, give us this bread and don't ever stop!”
35 Jesus replied:
I am the bread that gives life! No one who comes to me will ever be hungry. No one who has faith in me will ever be thirsty. 36 I have told you already that you have seen me and still do not have faith in me. 37 Everything and everyone that the Father has given me will come to me, and I won't turn any of them away.
38 I didn't come from heaven to do what I want! I came to do what the Father wants me to do. He sent me, 39 and he wants to make certain that none of the ones he has given me will be lost. Instead, he wants me to raise them to life on the last day.[i] 40 My Father wants everyone who sees the Son to have faith in him and to have eternal life. Then I will raise them to life on the last day.
41 The people started grumbling because Jesus had said he was the bread that had come down from heaven. 42 They were asking each other, “Isn't he Jesus, the son of Joseph? Don't we know his father and mother? How can he say that he has come down from heaven?”
43 Jesus told them:
Stop grumbling! 44 No one can come to me, unless the Father who sent me makes them want to come. But if they do come, I will raise them to life on the last day. 45 (C) One of the prophets wrote, “God will teach all of them.” And so everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him will come to me.
46 The only one who has seen the Father is the one who has come from him. No one else has ever seen the Father. 47 I tell you for certain that everyone who has faith in me has eternal life.
48 I am the bread that gives life! 49 Your ancestors ate manna[j] in the desert, and later they died. 50 But the bread from heaven has come down, so that no one who eats it will ever die. 51 I am that bread from heaven! Everyone who eats it will live forever. My flesh is the life-giving bread I give to the people of this world.
52 They started arguing with each other and asked, “How can he give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus answered:
I tell you for certain that you won't live unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man. 54 But if you do eat my flesh and drink my blood, you will have eternal life, and I will raise you to life on the last day. 55 My flesh is the true food, and my blood is the true drink. 56 If you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you are one with me, and I am one with you.
57 The living Father sent me, and I have life because of him. Now everyone who eats my flesh will live because of me. 58 The bread that comes down from heaven isn't like what your ancestors ate. They died, but whoever eats this bread will live forever.
59 Jesus was teaching in a synagogue in Capernaum when he said these things.
The Words of Eternal Life
60 Many of Jesus' disciples heard him and said, “This is too hard for anyone to understand.”
61 Jesus knew that his disciples were grumbling. So he asked, “Does this bother you? 62 What if you should see the Son of Man go up to heaven where he came from? 63 (D) The Spirit is the one who gives life! Human strength can do nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are from that life-giving Spirit. 64 But some of you refuse to have faith in me.” Jesus said this, because from the beginning he knew who would have faith in him. He also knew which one would betray him.
65 Then Jesus said, “You cannot come to me, unless the Father makes you want to come. That is why I have told these things to all of you.”
66 Because of what Jesus said, many of his disciples turned their backs on him and stopped following him. 67 Jesus then asked his twelve disciples if they also were going to leave him. 68 (E) Simon Peter answered, “Lord, there is no one else that we can go to! Your words give eternal life. 69 We have faith in you, and we are sure that you are God's Holy One.”
70 Jesus told his disciples, “I chose all twelve of you, but one of you is a demon!” 71 Jesus was talking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.[k] He would later betray Jesus, even though he was one of the twelve disciples.

Jesus Feeds More Than Five Thousand(A)
6 Yeshua later crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or the Sea of Tiberias). 2 A large crowd followed him because they saw the miracles that he performed for the sick. 3 Yeshua went up a mountain and sat with his disciples. 4 The time for the Jewish Passover festival was near.
5 As Yeshua saw a large crowd coming to him, he said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 Yeshua asked this question to test him. He already knew what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered, “We would need about a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each of them to have a piece.”
8 One of Yeshua’s disciples, Andrew, who was Simon Peter’s brother, told him, 9 “A boy who has five loaves of barley bread and two small fish is here. But they won’t go very far for so many people.”
10 Yeshua said, “Have the people sit down.”
The people had plenty of grass to sit on. (There were about 5,000 men in the crowd.)
11 Yeshua took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to the people who were sitting there. He did the same thing with the fish. All the people ate as much as they wanted.
12 When the people were full, Yeshua told his disciples, “Gather the leftover pieces so that nothing will be wasted.” 13 The disciples gathered the leftover pieces of bread and filled twelve baskets.
14 When the people saw the miracle Yeshua performed, they said, “This man is certainly the prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Yeshua realized that the people intended to take him by force and make him king. So he returned to the mountain by himself.
Jesus Walks on the Sea(B)
16 When evening came, his disciples went to the sea. 17 They got into a boat and started to cross the sea to the city of Capernaum. By this time it was dark, and Yeshua had not yet come to them. 18 A strong wind started to blow and stir up the sea.
19 After they had rowed three or four miles, they saw Yeshua walking on the sea. He was coming near the boat, and they became terrified.
20 Yeshua told them, “It’s me. Don’t be afraid!”
21 So they were willing to help Yeshua into the boat. Immediately, the boat reached the shore where they were going.
Jesus Is the Bread of Life
22 On the next day the people were still on the other side of the sea. They noticed that only one boat was there and that Yeshua had not stepped into that boat with his disciples. The disciples had gone away without him. 23 Other boats from Tiberias arrived near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks. 24 When the people saw that neither Yeshua nor his disciples were there, they got into these boats and went to the city of Capernaum to look for Yeshua. 25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26 Yeshua replied to them, “I can guarantee this truth: You’re not looking for me because you saw miracles. You are looking for me because you ate as much of those loaves as you wanted. 27 Don’t work for food that spoils. Instead, work for the food that lasts into eternal life. This is the food the Son of Man will give you. After all, the Father has placed his seal of approval on him.”
28 The people asked Yeshua, “What does God want us to do?”
29 Yeshua replied to them, “God wants to do something for you so that you believe in the one whom he has sent.”
30 The people asked him, “What miracle are you going to perform so that we can see it and believe in you? What are you going to do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the desert. Scripture says, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
32 Yeshua said to them, “I can guarantee this truth: Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 God’s bread is the man who comes from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread all the time.”
35 Yeshua told them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never become hungry, and whoever believes in me will never become thirsty. 36 I’ve told you that you have seen me. However, you don’t believe in me. 37 Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me. I will never turn away anyone who comes to me. 38 I haven’t come from heaven to do what I want to do. I’ve come to do what the one who sent me wants me to do. 39 The one who sent me doesn’t want me to lose any of those he gave me. He wants me to bring them back to life on the last day. 40 My Father wants all those who see the Son and believe in him to have eternal life. He wants me to bring them back to life on the last day.”
41 The Jews began to criticize Yeshua for saying, “I am the bread that came from heaven.” 42 They asked, “Isn’t this man Yeshua, Joseph’s son? Don’t we know his father and mother? How can he say now, ‘I came from heaven’?”
43 Yeshua responded, “Stop criticizing me! 44 People cannot come to me unless the Father who sent me brings them to me. I will bring these people back to life on the last day. 45 The prophets wrote, ‘God will teach everyone.’ Those who do what they have learned from the Father come to me. 46 I’m saying that no one has seen the Father. Only the one who is from God has seen the Father. 47 I can guarantee this truth: Every believer has eternal life.
48 “I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert and died. 50 This is the bread that comes from heaven so that whoever eats it won’t die. 51 I am the living bread that came from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. The bread I will give to bring life to the world is my flesh.”
52 The Jews began to quarrel with each other. They said, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Yeshua told them, “I can guarantee this truth: If you don’t eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have the source of life in you. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will bring them back to life on the last day. 55 My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood live in me, and I live in them. 57 The Father who has life sent me, and I live because of the Father. So those who feed on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came from heaven. It is not like the bread your ancestors ate. They eventually died. Those who eat this bread will live forever.”
59 Yeshua said this while he was teaching in a synagogue in Capernaum. 60 When many of Yeshua’s disciples heard him, they said, “What he says is hard to accept. Who wants to listen to him anymore?”
61 Yeshua was aware that his disciples were criticizing his message. So Yeshua asked them, “Did what I say make you lose faith? 62 What if you see the Son of Man go where he was before? 63 Life is spiritual. Your physical existence doesn’t contribute to that life. The words that I have spoken to you are spiritual. They are life. 64 But some of you don’t believe.” Yeshua knew from the beginning those who wouldn’t believe and the one who would betray him. 65 So he added, “That is why I told you that people cannot come to me unless the Father provides the way.”
66 Yeshua’s speech made many of his disciples go back to the lives they had led before they followed Yeshua. 67 So Yeshua asked the twelve apostles, “Do you want to leave me too?”
68 Simon Peter answered Yeshua, “Lord, to what person could we go? Your words give eternal life. 69 Besides, we believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”
70 Yeshua replied, “I chose all twelve of you. Yet, one of you is a devil.” 71 Yeshua meant Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. Judas, who was one of the twelve apostles, would later betray Yeshua.
